Herb was really cute.
Yes he was. I remember that dong as a kid.

I love that song. We had all of his LPs when I was a kid. I really liked Herb Alpert & TJB.

I remember when this song came out -- it was late in my junior year in high school. One day I walked into the study hall or a large classroom, and someone (presumably a student) had written out all of the lyrics on the blackboard. Strange memory.

It was A&M Records' (Alpert's company) first #1 single.

Mike Patton if Faith No More owns this song. Nobody has done it better.

R15 - Jesus - I had no idea he had such a good voice and that he was so handsome. I only know 2 Faith No More songs, so I had no idea how important and acclaimed they were until I just read it now.

For some reason, the girl surrounded by all the whipped cream on his famous "Whipped Cream" album used to make me cry as a kid. Don't know, maybe I was afraid she'd get in trouble for making such a mess like I'd be as a kid? My brothers used to tease me that they thought she was pretty hot, and I reacted by crying.

Diana Ross and the Supremes with The Temptations did a groovy, string laden version in 1968. Lush.

I wish the Grammys were more diverse these days. We need more of this and hard rock and Simon and Garfunkle and Dionne and Pat Methany and Pat Benatar and Yes and The Pretenders and CSN and the Talking Heads...

Why do I get him confused with Rupert Holmes?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 6, 2020 12:24 AM |
Right--because Rupert Holmes was such a great trumpeter.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 6, 2020 12:36 AM |
I went to his concert in Palm Springs last winter. He sounds great on the trumpet still though he did have to sit down a lot (I think he's 85 years old.) I always thought he was Mexico, I just found out he's Jewish.

It went to #1, earned a gold record and was one of the biggest hit singles of 1968 even though Herb wasn't much of a singer. Dionne Warwick recorded the song and released it as a single the following year - it was a Top 10 hit and needless to say her voice was a tad better than Herb's.

Herb never had a big, vocal hit again because his voice was merely adequate, to put it mildly, but had more big instrumental hit singles.

I'd love to see his schlong covered in whipped cream.

I saw him in concert with Lani hall. He stood the whole time and both of them were wonderful. Lani hall has had some great plastic surgery.

To put this in a historical contest (not that it's necessarily relevant) - this song was released and became a hit at the time when MLK and RFK were assassinated (spring of 1968.)

Wiki : Herb Alpert was born and raised in the Boyle Heights section of Eastside Los Angeles, California, the son of Tillie (née Goldberg) and Louis Leib Alpert. His parents were Jewish immigrants to the U.S. from Radomyshl (in present-day Ukraine) and Romania.

His Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis-produced album KEEP YOUR EYE ON ME is a classic. Love the songs Diamonds and Making Love in the Rain, which featured Janet on vocals.

Herb's "Rise" was a staple at my grandparent's house when I was a kid. They'd put that record on their floor model stereo and we'd all boogie.

I love this song. It's all first person so there's no way to say if he's singing about a guy or a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 23, 2020 5:55 PM |
He had a singing follow-up or year or so later with this Harry Nilsson song. It didn’t chart as high as “This Guy” but I like it nonetheless.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 23, 2020 6:17 PM |
Did it chart at all, R45?
Dozens of people tried to get a hit with that song.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 23, 2020 6:21 PM |
Don't forget that my vocals gave Herb another hit in the 1980s!

This is on one of my Spotify playlists. It’s an ear worm. Now it’ll be stuck in my head all afternoon.
I guess I’m feeling very tender and homesick today, because I’m getting misty-eyed reading the comments. There’s a certain kind of Southern California feeling from the 70s that makes me feel that way even though I lived in New England.

R46, just checked — according to Billboard.com, Alpert’s version of “Without Her” peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 in June of 1969. I’m surprised to learn it got that high!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | October 23, 2020 11:12 PM |

I don't much care for OP's version of the song because Alpert uses a voiceover intro to contextualize it at being addressed to a woman. The studio version doesn't do that, and permits the possibility of a male intended.
I like ungendered songs; 'I Think We're Alone Now' by Tommy James & the Shondells is like that.
