Chuck Schumer said RBG is rolling over in her grave in heaven

What do Jews believe in regarding afterlife? Not trying to start anything, just genuinely curious.

That doesn’t make any sense. The grave is here on earth. If there’s a heaven, I hope one isn’t stuck in a grave there.

No afterlife. This here is it.

I thought that Jews believed in Hell -- or maybe it's just Satan that they believe in? Or am I wrong?

That's what Jews believe?

What's the point of believing in God if there's no heaven?

Do Jews believe in rolling their eyes?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 1, 2020 7:25 AM |
Of course Jews believe in heaven. They don’t believe Jesus was the Messiah or the son of God.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 1, 2020 7:27 AM |
R7 Well, there's also no hell, so...

R4 No Satan either really, or at least not how Christians believe or perceive Satan. When a certain HaSatan is mentioned, he is a fallen angel, AKA as Samael, Beliya'al, "The Accuse" or "The Adversary" He was Job's tormenter.and believed by some Jews to be the "Angel of Death".

^ The Accuser

Imagine there's no heaven

Heaven isn't too far away. Getting closer every day.

R7 It matters not whether one believes in G-d, but that he act and live as if there was a G-d. Another chief difference between Christians and Jews in my estimation.
More on HaSatan, interestingly enough, Maimonides, the famous medieval philosopher thought Satan didn't really exist, but more as a parable, or metaphor for our inclination to sin, or Yetzer HaRa. Similar to a Christian belief of "Original Sin", yet considered natural and part of our nature. He didn't feel it was important to believe he ever really existed. In Kabbalah, The Zohar, and in Hasidic teachings, Satan is given more prominence, and there is an entirely evil realm described in Kaballah.
An evil inclination is not considered abnormal, or a problem until one seeks to gratify that inclination.

R1 R3 and R6, etc. Traditional Judaism most certainly believes in an afterlife, [italic] Olam HaBa [/italic], the World-to-Come. All Jews, as well as good gentiles, have a share in it. The Talmud discusses the afterlife extensively.
When Jews say the famous Kaddish prayer for their deceased relative for one year after their death, it is to help the soul through purgatory. All souls go through purgatory for up to one year, depending on how much "purging" they need.

^^Schumer is a bit presumptuous, though that RBG has already completed all her time in purgatory. Even for a wonderful person, two weeks is pretty short.

Writing “G-d” this way Major eye roll.

R18 Neither R1, or R3, or R6 here, however I'd like to share that many rabbis teach on Olam Ha-Ba as a often confused idea with the eartly realm after the messiah comes, and the dead are risen. Some make the distinction that only a heaven can be imagined specifically when Gan Eden is mentioned. Then in Kabbalah, and The Zohar, we have multiple celestial realms, or heavenly places.
I'm not arguing in favour of one interpretation over another, just pointing out not all Jews believe this. My rabbis have always said we do not know, and it is not important. Classical Judaism is somewhat ancient to me at times, and even the medieval rabbis had different notions of what were parables, and what was meant to be taken literally.
In both Talmud, and Kabbalah, the voyage of the human soul to both Gan Eden, as well as Gehinnom, and other heavenly realms is discussed, yet many modern Jews do not believe these are essential beliefs or tenets of Judaism. I would argue from a semantics standpoint, Gehinnom, is where it is believed Jewish souls are destined for a cleansing for a twelve month period. Classical Rabbinical Judaism may use the term purgatory, but it is a teaching I never heard. In closing, it is fair to state in differen times, and in different places, we Jews believed different things.
Certainly today in Liberal and Progressive, or Reform tradition, much less of a certainty or emphasis on a literal interpretation is placed on these richly descriptive notions of a heaven described in Classical Judaism. I hope there is a heaven, yet I do not live my life in expectation of one.
Shalom

R20 You can roll your eyes as you like. It's my tradition, and how I was raised. I'm not changing now for you, or anyone else. When I am dealing with a Jewish audience, or using Hebrew, I say and write HaShem. Do you prefer that for some reason, or do you simply enjoy disrespecting traditions different to your own?

R20 You were the poster trolling me for my comments on the Spitting Image thread: calling me an idiot for finding the caricature of Zuckerberg to be in poor taste, and resembling "Jewish Nose" tropes. I sincerely wish you would cease responding to my posts. I block you repeatedly, yet you do jot stay blocked.
You have an issue with Jews, and you obviously have a penchant for insulting me. Toss off. You need to get a life, and you deserve a red tag to boot.

If Schumer believes in heaven, why must he imagine we stay in the coffin as a sleeping vampire? It makes absolutely no sense RGB would be in a coffin in heaven!
