Country music Legend Marty Robbins was a homosexualist, was he not?

He wrote and performed many country hits. Some crossed over to pop like El Paso OK he was married to the same woman for decades, but what better cover?

When I watch this clip I'm seeing a gay man sing his heart out.

DL elder gays, did any of you have him?

There were rumors about him and Buck Owens as well. The rumor with Buck was that he was having a long affair with Don Rich a member of his band "The Buckaroos". The rumor was that when Rich died in a motorcycle accident in 1974 at the age of 32 Buck went crazy with grief for a while.

YES!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 2September 28, 2020 9:06 PM

This is the kind of content I come here for.

by Anonymousreply 3September 28, 2020 9:14 PM

There are no gays in country!

We're all straight!

by Anonymousreply 4September 28, 2020 9:19 PM

Yes he sure seems to be, OP. Here’s one of my favorites for when you are suffering from a heartache.

You got that right, Kenny!

by Anonymousreply 6September 28, 2020 9:22 PM

He had a beautiful full-bodied voice, clear and he enunciated perfectly. In OP's vid he looks like all the guys in 1970s photos of the Castro. How is it possible people didn't see the obvious?

by Anonymousreply 7September 28, 2020 9:34 PM

Marty was from Arizona so he didn't have a stereotypical southern country accent.

by Anonymousreply 8September 28, 2020 9:39 PM

Bump

by Anonymousreply 9September 28, 2020 11:18 PM

Omg the way he flips the tail of his jacket, Liberace was screaming "He stole that shit from me".

by Anonymousreply 10September 29, 2020 12:29 AM

I love country music threads because they are not enough of them. This is fascinating. Can't wait for more responses.

by Anonymousreply 11September 29, 2020 12:33 AM

As a kid, I had a crush on Buck Owens on "Hee Haw." Now to find this out about him is amazing.

OP here. I have found nothing online about MR's gay life which just goes to show how successfully closeted he was.

In the interest of gay history its really up to those in Nashville who have the receipts to come forward.

by Anonymousreply 13September 29, 2020 12:40 AM

There are at least a handful of closet cases in the Country Music Hall of Fame

by Anonymousreply 14September 29, 2020 12:42 AM

Minnie Pearl was a big ol' lez, even though she was married to her business manager for nearly 50 years.

My mother adored MR so we grew up listening to him. I havent in years ,but after watching some of these I will. Im glad I wasnt the only one with a huge crush on Buck Owens . To me he epitomizes BDF.

by Anonymousreply 16September 29, 2020 12:53 AM

R15, she was NOT gay. She just liked sensible shoes and had a lot of close female friends

by Anonymousreply 17September 29, 2020 12:54 AM

Is this well-known about Minnie? Who was her gf?

Is this Buck Owens' bf, the guy playing guitar and singing with him? They look good together.

Supposedly he died of a heart attack in 1982 - beginning of AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 19September 29, 2020 12:57 AM

Yes R18 that's Don Rich. Taken far to young.

by Anonymousreply 20September 29, 2020 1:01 AM

[quote]OP here. I have found nothing online about MR's gay life which just goes to show how successfully closeted he was.

Or maybe show that he wasn't gay? There is absolutely nothing ANYWHERE that would even hint that Marty Robbins was gay. Nothing. Anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 21September 29, 2020 1:06 AM

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso, I fell in love with a Mexican twink

by Anonymousreply 22September 29, 2020 1:09 AM

R21. We're gay men here. We have eyes

by Anonymousreply 23September 29, 2020 1:13 AM

Love this cornball stuff once in a while. Plus Buck looked like he could throw a mean fuck.

Agreed, OP and R1. My gaydar is legendary, and I pegged those guys (no pun intended) decades ago.

Also am 99% sure Ferlin Husky was at least a part timer in the club. That live performance of "On the Wings of the Snow White Dove" was fey as Danny Kate.

Dolly is one, R14.

by Anonymousreply 26September 29, 2020 1:34 AM

Don't look in my direction! Just because I married a woman old enough to be my mom who looked like a drag queen Peggy Lee impersonator does not mean I'm gay!

by Anonymousreply 27September 29, 2020 1:36 AM

R18 that was quite an amazing bit of vintage TV! Yes, Don Rich is the guitar player, and they spend a lot of time together on stage. They would have made a hot couple for sure. Tommy Collins that guested later in that show was cute too. Wonder if they all had a threesome that night?

by Anonymousreply 28September 29, 2020 1:50 AM

...and I thought Roy Clark was the gay host.

by Anonymousreply 29September 29, 2020 2:00 AM

r29 I can't imagine what would've given you that idea.

OP Marty was a little before my time but wow what a voice. I love some of his old clips where he is cutting up with his backup singers.

Buck Owens wrote some of the catchiest tunes that still pick me up.

by Anonymousreply 31September 29, 2020 2:37 AM

I never knew Randy Travis knew and hung out with the original Duke boy (Jerry Rushing) when he was a young boy. Small world.

Jerry talks about Randy around 5:45.

R30. Hilarious. What a flamer. Quite a talented musician as well.

by Anonymousreply 33September 29, 2020 3:10 AM

Actually, there were more rumors about him cheating on his wife (with women!).

R19, He had a long history of heart disease, including three heart attacks. He died a few days after cardiac by-pass surgery. Doesn't really fit with AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 34September 29, 2020 7:55 AM

Buck Owens looks like Fred Arminsen, so you all can keep him, yuck. Now, that Ferlin Husky got some swagger at r25. And he looks like he's hiding a pecan log in his front pocket. Yum!

by Anonymousreply 35September 29, 2020 8:25 AM

Wtf am I reading this shit for?

by Anonymousreply 36September 29, 2020 8:33 AM

Yes, Marty, Buck & FerlIn were all some of them Nashville homo boys. And they all loved gettin' a taste of my massive meat on a weekly basis.

by Anonymousreply 37September 29, 2020 9:30 AM

[quote] Wtf am I reading this shit for?

Apparently because someone is holding a gun on you. Should we alert the authorities?

by Anonymousreply 38September 29, 2020 9:31 AM

Sizemeat or puny cocklets?

by Anonymousreply 39September 29, 2020 9:46 AM

He is rather flamboyant in that clip, but my lord what a voice!

by Anonymousreply 40September 29, 2020 10:19 AM

And just so you know, Jimmy Dickens was reputedly a homosexual as well. He certainly had plenty of purses falling out of his mouth every time he opened it.

I'm not sold on the idea of "Buck as Family." If he was, you sure as hell couldn't tell when he guested on "Match Game" back in the Seventies. He should have been squealing with sissy-boy delight because he got to sit in the top tier with Charles Nelson Reilly AND fag-hag Brett Somers, but Buck and the tag team of C.N.R and B.S. acted like they couldn't STAND each other.

by Anonymousreply 42September 29, 2020 11:38 AM

They probably thought they were better than some hick country music singer. Country was not cool back in those days. Or Charles Nelson Reilly put the moves on Robbins and Robbins wanted nothing to do with that big ol' sissy.

by Anonymousreply 43September 30, 2020 12:47 AM

Oh, dear!

by Anonymousreply 44September 30, 2020 1:00 PM

I never thought of Marty Robbins as gay. In fact, I never really thought of Marty Robbins until this thread.

But after watching OP’s video, if I walked into a gay karaoke bar and saw this guy, I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s almost over the top.

by Anonymousreply 45September 30, 2020 1:01 PM

He certainly had a pert little rump.

So many people had a variant of that look in the 1970s that no one thought much about it, R7.

In country and bluegrass, there has always been a set of mannerisms that I think most people nowadays would consider gay or gay-coded, but often weren't at the time. The 1930s and 1940s Hollywood country swing bands had a lot of it, Bob Wills practically gonged, so did Johnnie Davis, and Gene Autry and John Wayne were both considered potentially closeted. That hadn't really changed in the 1970s. I don't know enough about Marty Robbins to know if he really was in the closet or if these were just baked-in old country mannerisms that he had acquired.

Maybe he was and everyone just missed it. I mean, this was the era of people not realizing Elton John and Paul Lynde were gay.

by Anonymousreply 48September 30, 2020 7:52 PM

Johnnie Davis starting at about 2:40. Flames from space!

This was one of his first films, as soon as Hollywood saw this number they started writing singing cowboy parts for him, he just had "that look" about him.

Or maybe he wasn't and people (ppl) just see what they want to see.

There was nothing potentially closeted about John Wayne. That man was pure homo.

by Anonymousreply 55October 4, 2020 7:58 AM
