I think it's time we revisit "Charlies Angels" (2000) 20 Years Later, and its sequel "Full Throttle" (2003)

I decided to watch both of these after not having seen either one of them since 2003, and to my surprise,I enjoyed the first one very much still, despite it being super campy and cheesy. I was 13 when this one came out, and I loved it back then. I remember thinking it was so cool, the fight scenes were so badass and seeing three women kick ass was a lot of fun. Seeing it in my early 30s, its a fun popcorn flick you can turn your brain off to, but way too campy and cheesy. Those fight scenes that seemed cool in 2000 seem tawdry in 2020, at least for the most part.

The perfect example is the famous fight where the 3 Angels have to go against the skinny creepy guy. His screech is so over the top, it makes you cringe and laugh a bit, and the over the top choreography and poses... come on (but from what I read most fans love the poses and hate that the 2003 and 2019 movies lacked those). The first one did have a lot of good humor and was fun though, with Lucy Liu being the standout for me. She was great, had the best fight scenes and moves, and was the most natural of the three, in my opinion. I loved her fight toward the end with skinny guy, loved her flirty nature and she looked so hot!

Fast forward to the 2003 movie, and what a fucking mess. It took the camp factor, cheese, and over the top fight scenes and multiplied them by 20000. Everything was sooooooo over the top, from the very first scene all the way to the last. The girls can now climb bare walls, surf on ropes, fall 100 feet and not even get a scratch.... they went from three women fighting crime to full on Marvel superheroes. It was ridiculous. Not to mention the script managed to be even cheesier and yet more simple than the first, while still managing to be confusing. How is Skinny Creepy Guy still alive after they killed him? Why is he now helping the Angels during their final battle? Why was he brought back only to be killed pretty fast?

Demi Moore looked amazing in this, but her character was sooooooo ridiculous, and do not get me started on her jumping off a roof and flying through the air to throw a bomb, and it lands right where black Bosley is and he hits it like a baseball and it flies away.

Justin Theroux's big intro scene is almost creepy, and you are made to believe that he is someone to fear and is gonna harm the Angels, only for him to die super fast in the final battle. What a letdown.

This movie is just so bad, no wonder it was critically panned (it still did well at the box office, though).

I am shocked they didn't make a third one.

Overall, the first is fun popcorn camp, while the second is a bloated mess and plays out like a Transformers movie,

Did you like them?

No Beamish? No Margo?

by Anonymousreply 1September 26, 2020 12:55 AM

I like the first for what it is, and hate the second for what it is. The second went too over the top and added tons of skimpy outfits and was all over the place.

If my sister was on here she would rant about Bosley suddenly being black and no one acknowledging he suddenly looks different lol

by Anonymousreply 2September 26, 2020 1:04 AM

Darrin Stephens was suddenly gay and no one made a big thing of it.

by Anonymousreply 3September 26, 2020 1:10 AM

Drew is miscast. She’s so odd.

by Anonymousreply 4September 26, 2020 1:13 AM

R4 she’s a lot of people’s fav Angel

by Anonymousreply 5September 26, 2020 1:14 AM

They are just popcorn movies, the audience is not supposed to think at all. The original was cute and fun. The sequel, on the other hand, went way over the top and not in a good way. Believe it or not, Ebert gave the sequel 2 1/2 stars but gave the original 1/2 star.

by Anonymousreply 6September 26, 2020 1:15 AM

Demi was said to have more than $100,000 worth of body work before she filmed CAs

by Anonymousreply 7September 26, 2020 1:15 AM

I liked the second one better than the first, probably one of only about eight people who can say the same.

by Anonymousreply 8September 26, 2020 1:16 AM

R8 really? Why? I just watched it and the first half was a lot of fun but by the final act it’s so sloppy and TOO over the top, not in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 9September 26, 2020 1:19 AM

Fuck Bill Murray.

I made sure he didn't return for the sequel.

That's power, baby.

by Anonymousreply 10September 26, 2020 1:20 AM

Bernie Mac was one of the few improvements the sequel had. I actually preferred his Bosley to Murray’s

by Anonymousreply 11September 26, 2020 1:24 AM

I thought the first one was cute, the second one was stupid but Demi looked like a billion dollars

by Anonymousreply 12September 26, 2020 1:24 AM

They had a little reunion on Drew’s new show

This film was supposed to be Demi Moore's comeback movie but the only thing it did was to establish once and for all that she was a movie star as opposed to an actress.

Demi took years off then agreed to do this. She was contacted and offered the part, and she agreed because it was a pivotal role without many scenes, and they were paying her like $12 million to do it.

by Anonymousreply 15September 26, 2020 1:35 AM

Seriously, watch the Boat fight scene. It’s SO OVER THE TOP. McG def overdid it with this one.

I think he did because some of the critics who dissed the first one criticized it for not having bigger more extravagant action scenes and having too much comedy. Look at what happened with the sequel.

Thandie Newton was originally cast as the 3rd Angel. She dropped out and Lucy Liu was cast.

by Anonymousreply 17September 26, 2020 1:40 AM

I like the over the top approach of the sequel. They were all having fun and camped it up. Demi looked fabulous and was a fun villain.

I also preferred Bernie Mac to Bill Murray.

by Anonymousreply 18September 26, 2020 1:42 AM

R8, maybe it was 9 people! I preferred Full Throttle over the original too!

by Anonymousreply 19September 26, 2020 1:42 AM

12 Million? I don't believe it.

by Anonymousreply 20September 26, 2020 1:43 AM

Full Throttle had good eye candy.

Bill Murray is kind of a jerk, he's said more than once that he wants McG dead, and there have been rumors that he attacked McG on set. But Murray gets away with it because of his lovable eccentric routine.

by Anonymousreply 22September 26, 2020 1:46 AM

R20 did you forget what a big star Demi was? She was the highest laid actress in Hollywood in the 90s, being paid $12 million per film in her peak.

She did take a pay cut for Full Throttle but she was paid around $8 million still.

For the first, the salaries were

Cameron Diaz- $12 million

Drew Barrymore- $9 million

Lucy Liu- $1 million only

by Anonymousreply 23September 26, 2020 1:48 AM

R23, was that intentional? You said Demi was the highest "laid" actress in Hollywood.

by Anonymousreply 24September 26, 2020 1:49 AM

For the second, the salaries were...

Cameron Diaz- $20 million

Drew Barrymore- $14 million

Lucy Liu- $4 million

I get Liu was newer and not the star the other two were, but damn

by Anonymousreply 25September 26, 2020 1:50 AM

R24 meant paid... but that fits too.

by Anonymousreply 26September 26, 2020 1:51 AM

I found a forum discussing the salaries for Full Throttle from back in 2003. It’s like a time capsule Lol

What was Sharon Stone paid for CATWOMAN? Because her career was about as dead as Demi's at that time...

by Anonymousreply 28September 26, 2020 2:03 AM

Drew Barrymore owns (or did at the time at least) the Charlie’s Angels film rights. She was in charge and cast herself.

From 2003 for the sequel

For "Full Throttle," she paid herself a $14 million salary (as opposed to Diaz's $20 million and Liu's $4 million). She'll also take home 12 percent of the film's gross earnings, plus a producing fee.

by Anonymousreply 29September 26, 2020 2:04 AM

I liked Drew’s look in the second one - the shorter hair really suited her and gave her a tougher vibe. Beautiful and a tad butch.

by Anonymousreply 30September 26, 2020 2:16 AM

The hair was also darker. It was more Orange in the first to not keep her blonde, since Cameron was blonde. They couldn’t have two blonde Angels.

Then in the second she went darker

These two films were better than the shit fest that Elizabeth Banks passed off as a Charlie's Angels movie.

by Anonymousreply 33September 26, 2020 2:29 AM

Bernie Mac was miscast for the second one. His character didn't go as well with the girls as Bill Murray's did. I know the circumstances behind why Bill Murray left, but they should have gotten a replacement instead of completely changing the character to tailor Bernie (RIP).

by Anonymousreply 34September 26, 2020 2:57 AM

R33 i don't know what they were thinking casting Patrick Stewart. His "action" scenes were laughable.

by Anonymousreply 35September 26, 2020 6:45 AM

Patrick had action scenes???

by Anonymousreply 36September 26, 2020 1:05 PM

Try as I might I habent gotten through the second one even once. And, btw, was Jaclyn Smiths cameo filmed while she was standing on the sun?

by Anonymousreply 37September 26, 2020 1:11 PM

Demi Moore looked like a million bucks. Incredible

by Anonymousreply 38September 26, 2020 4:20 PM

R36 he flips Elizabeth Banks over a dance floor 😆

by Anonymousreply 39September 26, 2020 9:18 PM

I remember thinking a lot of the scenes and the story in the new movie were actually good, but it didn’t feel like a CA film. It would have worked better as something different.

by Anonymousreply 40September 26, 2020 9:20 PM

I enjoyed the first one - wasn't great "cinema" but a bit of silly fun. The second one was a mess.

The recent reboot was a complete mess - from what I've read. The funny thing is that the people complaining about not enough women in lead roles should be the most outraged at how badly that movie was screwed up. The Angels should be icons of tough, badass AND feminine women. Instead, we got that crapshow.
