I decided to watch both of these after not having seen either one of them since 2003, and to my surprise,I enjoyed the first one very much still, despite it being super campy and cheesy. I was 13 when this one came out, and I loved it back then. I remember thinking it was so cool, the fight scenes were so badass and seeing three women kick ass was a lot of fun. Seeing it in my early 30s, its a fun popcorn flick you can turn your brain off to, but way too campy and cheesy. Those fight scenes that seemed cool in 2000 seem tawdry in 2020, at least for the most part.
The perfect example is the famous fight where the 3 Angels have to go against the skinny creepy guy. His screech is so over the top, it makes you cringe and laugh a bit, and the over the top choreography and poses... come on (but from what I read most fans love the poses and hate that the 2003 and 2019 movies lacked those). The first one did have a lot of good humor and was fun though, with Lucy Liu being the standout for me. She was great, had the best fight scenes and moves, and was the most natural of the three, in my opinion. I loved her fight toward the end with skinny guy, loved her flirty nature and she looked so hot!
Fast forward to the 2003 movie, and what a fucking mess. It took the camp factor, cheese, and over the top fight scenes and multiplied them by 20000. Everything was sooooooo over the top, from the very first scene all the way to the last. The girls can now climb bare walls, surf on ropes, fall 100 feet and not even get a scratch.... they went from three women fighting crime to full on Marvel superheroes. It was ridiculous. Not to mention the script managed to be even cheesier and yet more simple than the first, while still managing to be confusing. How is Skinny Creepy Guy still alive after they killed him? Why is he now helping the Angels during their final battle? Why was he brought back only to be killed pretty fast?
Demi Moore looked amazing in this, but her character was sooooooo ridiculous, and do not get me started on her jumping off a roof and flying through the air to throw a bomb, and it lands right where black Bosley is and he hits it like a baseball and it flies away.
Justin Theroux's big intro scene is almost creepy, and you are made to believe that he is someone to fear and is gonna harm the Angels, only for him to die super fast in the final battle. What a letdown.
This movie is just so bad, no wonder it was critically panned (it still did well at the box office, though).
I am shocked they didn't make a third one.
Overall, the first is fun popcorn camp, while the second is a bloated mess and plays out like a Transformers movie,
Did you like them?
