Retro remixes of recent pop songs
Have any of you come across these channels on YouTube? Generally they take a more recent pop song, and remix it to sound like it came out of the 80s. I have to say, I think some of them are done really well. I'm not a fan of modern pop music so much, but these remixes often make me like the song more. Thought I'd share some, and if anyone else has some favourites, it'd be great to hear them too.
Below is an 80s inspired remix of Ariana Grande's "Into You".

And here's one that really surprised me. I really like this, and have never liked anything with Taylor Swift in it before. A 70s-style bossa nova mix of her song "Cardigan":

Not the same thing, but I love this Latin remix of "Somebody Groovy" by the Mamas and Papas.

These are great, haha! By the way, I'm obsessed with Oprah's facial expressions while dancing in that clip above, makes me laugh so much!
Doesn't that Justin Bieber remix sound exactly like something that could've come out of one of those crappy teen movies from the 80s? 😂

I have found my new hobby. I guess I'll never emerge from the 80s.

During the lockdown, a DJ group has been mixing 50 songs from a single 80-90s year into a 3 minute video. They are currently working their way through the 90s.

^I love that idea! I look forward to going through the 90s stuff in particular as I'm a child of the 90s. Great find!

The worst thing about all these songs is still there: the robotic and faceless auto-tuned voices. What made the 80s great was the wide variety of vocalists who sounded like themselves and whose vocal tics and affectations were embraced rather than flattened out by a prgoram.

R26, you have hit the nail on the head as to why, as great as many of these remixes sound, they will never sound completely of the time they are evoking because of the vocals. I really don't enjoy the way a lot of modern vocals are recorded, often it almost feels claustrophobic when listening to it.

I love Postmodern Jukebox.
"Bye Bye Bye" as surf rock.

Oh yeah, I've seen a few of those Postmodern Jukebox songs and there is some great stuff there - they do a great Klezmer version of "Talk Dirty to Me" and their 1920s "Material Girl" made me realise how much that song would've actually worked really well in that decade too, think Sophie Tucker etc.

Interestingly, with Adele R28, make her up a bit differently than in that video and there would be quite a resemblance to Alison Moyet, I feel.

The bandleader did music for a video game called Bioshock: Infinite that did the same thing. There was a version of "Tainted Love" that sounded like Ma Rainey, and it's fantastic.

There's also this version of "Million Reasons" that I think sounds better to Gaga's original.

Tainted Love was originally sung by Gloria Jones, an R&B singer.

Are The Hood Presents going to continue past 1994? I hope so. 1995 was the year I started taping the radio - hours spent sitting pressed up against it with my fingers hovering over the record button, hoping the DJ wouldn't talk over the song too much. Memories.
