He came out, even bringing his fiance (now husband) to the upfronts. Since coming out, he's only been able to book lead roles in gay indies. He's currently playing someone's gay assistant on that Reese Witherspoon / Jennifer Aniston show. Out actors are still sidelined.

Whoever pointed out that it ends with Brandon’s character being institutionalized makes a lot of sense that it is a clue for his return meeting with Racheted in another like minded setting. That would also justify, both for Murphy and Brandon, the hire for what is otherwise a cameo part knowing that the second season was locked in and that his character would develop further in season two. It may also explain the monkey too, which to me was just an over the top throw away eccentric detail.
