R1
What?
“In an address late Thursday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that even stricter measures may be needed to prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed. There are currently more than 46,000 active cases, with at least 577 hospitalized in serious condition.”

More for R1
“Israel has reported a total of more than 175,000 cases since the outbreak began, including at least 1,169 deaths. It is now reporting around 5,000 new cases a day, one of the highest per capita infection rates in the world.
Israel was among the first countries to impose sweeping lockdowns this spring, sealing its borders, forcing most businesses to close and largely confining people to their homes. That succeeded in bringing the number of new cases down to only a few dozen per day in May.
But then the economy abruptly reopened, and a new government was sworn in that was paralyzed by infighting. In recent months authorities have announced various restrictions only to see them ignored or reversed even as new cases soared to record levels.“

Didn't they actually hold off a couple of days so Netanyahu could do his photo-op with Trump?
When is he going to be removed from power? I thought his last election results were bad and he was going through a criminal indictment.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 18, 2020 1:24 PM |
There are only 9 million people in Israel, so they are having a lot of cases for a small country. They must be terrified of the virus infecting the IDF.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 18, 2020 1:26 PM |
R1, who are "they" that are trying to prevent Jews in Israel from celebrating their holidays? And why? Besides, I thought Jewish people observed their holidays by fasting and doing no work, which isn't the kind of "celebrating" that would be prevented by a lockdown.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 18, 2020 1:26 PM |
You'll have to pardon R1. Sometimes the wingnut talking points generator spits out a dud.

L'Shanah Tova... Sad way to begin the New Year, but the Israelis are good about following the health directives. I was surprised how many Selichot services were packed. London as well, and the surrounding areas.

Lockdown means Netanyahu has some time to strategize a public relations campaign in his favor while no protests and rallies can take place.
I wouldn't be surprised if Trump changes course right before the election and is all concerned for the public's safety at election day.

R6 steps right up, unashamed to post his complete ignorance about Jews, their laws, and their celebrations.

Israelis are officially under government-mandated house arrest for the next 3 weeks. The purpose is to prevent family gatherings, which are common during the Rosh Hashana, Sukkot and Simchat Torah festivals. There are so many government-mandated house arrest dos and don'ts that it'll take three weeks just to read through them all. The best one so far: you can go to the beach, but you can't go into the Med.

Netanyahu is getting reamed over this.
Israel was one of the stars of The First Wave -- they did lockdown early, did contact tracing, kept the numbers very very low, one of the lowest in the West.
But then Netanyahu did a Trump and tried to reopen everything too quickly and they got hit hard by Round 2 and he is getting blamed for it.
The Hasids don't help--they live in close quarters with large families, tend not to speak Hebrew, so they only get their news from each other and even Bibi has had to send the army into their neighborhoods a few times to enforce lockdown--armed (and the mainstream Israeli press is having a field day with this) Yiddish-Hebrew dictionaries.

AP: People must remain within 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) of home, but there are several exceptions, including shopping for food or medicine, going to work in a business that’s closed to the public, [bold]attending protests[/bold] and even seeking essential pet care.

Rubbish! Everyone speaks Hebrew, including "the Hassids".

WHET to those Hasidic pilgrims who got stuck between the Ukrainian and Belarusian border a few days ago?
Some of them looked kind of hot.

R15 True, albeit often with an Eastern European or Lithuanian pronunciation. It's interesting how many posters are completely oblivious.

R16 Nice pic; he is handsome. Most of the pictures I saw featured either very old or very young. Many looked completely plotzed. They're said to be running low on water. I wonder how long they'll be camped out there. It's sad they cannot make their pilgrimage; it's a very big thing for them.

Humans can't manage to wear masks at home and in their close family circles. Factor in religious holidays and it's a lost cause. At least the Israelis were honest that the holidays would have been a disaster. Stay home, you fucking stupid sheeple!
Spain has their resurgence because - "party people".
USA - MAGA! GOD! TRUMP! COLLEGE LIFE!
Whatever the activity, it's the same human failing. Something as simple as please stay away from each other unless it's essential. Wear a mask. NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! NOPE! R17 Not in Israel they don't. They speak Hebrew with the same accent as everyone else.

So the article from the Yeshiva World about the IDF soldiers being given Yiddish-Hebrew dictionaries to go into Bnai Brak was fake news, R15 and R8?
Because here are some other links about it . The first is from Haaretz

R21 and R22 for the win.

Spot on R21. Fake news, agendaed news (especially from Ha'artez, Israel's answer to the Gaudrian). Everyone speaks Hebrew in Bnei Brak.

R21 Why do you ask about me?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 18, 2020 2:26 PM |
Moment Magazine
[quote] Some of the residents of Bnei Brak speak Yiddish as their first language. “They gave us handouts with translations of some phrases into Yiddish,” says Itay [and IDF soldier]. “I tried to say things in Yiddish, out of respect. But how am I supposed to figure these things out? All of my grandparents came from Morocco.”
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 18, 2020 2:27 PM |
In addition to that bastion of liberal ideology Arutz Sheva, the equally Antifa-leaning Jerusalem Post repeats that obviously fake news story, citing Israeli Army Radio, another bastion of left wing disinformation:
[quote] Army Radio reported that IDF troops were also given a Yiddish dictionary in order to communicate with residents.

Speaking of agenda R21 etc., miss the qualifier?? And just because [bold]SOME[/bold) may speak Yiddish as a first language, doesn't mean that they don't speak Hebrew. But the media has to fill their sites with something to amuse the gullible masses.

Four of the top Israeli media outlets, spanning the spectrum from far left to far right.... or a random anonymous poster on Datalounge.
Tough call.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 18, 2020 2:37 PM |
R32 That [bold]SOME[/bold] may speak Yiddish as a first language does not preclude them speaking Hebrew. Your assertion at R21 that "the Hassids tend not to speak Hebrew" is erroneous and absurd.

I thought the Hasids only spoke Hebrew in the synagogue and Yiddish outside of it, they won't use Hebrew as an everyday language as it is holy to them.
