John Leguizamo boycotts the Emmys: 'If you don't have Latin people, there's no reason for me to see it'

The lack of Latinx stories and representation in Hollywood, both in TV and film, remains a hot-button issue for John Leguizamo. He’s decided to take a stand and snub this year’s Emmy Awards.

“I’m boycotting,” he tells Yahoo Entertainment. “If you don’t have Latin people, there’s no reason for me to see it. What’s the point?”

“It’s unbelievable that our stories aren’t being told and there’s one reason for that,” he explains. “Executives don’t see us, don’t get us — don’t care about us.”

There are zero nominations for Latinx shows or actors in any of the major categories. “We’re less than one percent of the stories being told by Hollywood streamers and networks, that’s cultural apartheid,” he says.

In a statement to the Los Angeles Times, the Television Academy addressed the need for representation, saying, “We feel it is a very positive sign that over the past decade the well-deserved recognition of performers of color has increased from 1 in 10 to 1 in 3 nominees across all performer categories. Clearly that increase in representation has not been equal for all groups, and clearly there is still more to do to improve both gender and racial representation across all categories.”

The actor turned director’s latest movie, Critical Thinking, premiered Sept. 4 and includes a predominantly Black and Latinx cast, which was a motivating factor for Leguizamo to be part of the film.

Critical Thinking tells the true story of five Latinx and Black teens from an underprivileged Miami neighborhood, who become the 1998 National Chess Champions. Leguizamo plays the inspirational chess coach and also makes his directorial debut.

“I’m just dying to see positive Latin stories out there,” he says.

While he’s been in the industry for more than three decades and has received four Emmy nominations, including a win in 1999 for his variety special Freak, Leguizamo agrees there is more to be done to improve diversity in Hollywood.

“It’s just not OK to ignore us, exclude us,” he explains. “We’re the largest minority group in the country. We’re the biggest voting block. We’re going to decide who the president is this year.”

Folks online have called out the Emmys for its exclusion of Latinx-centered shows. The hashtag #LatinosAreOnTvToo has circulated with many reacting to the snub.

“The cards have always been stacked against us and yet we are incredible thrivers,” Leguizamo says. “We’re survivors and thrivers — and we’re still here contributing $1.3 trillion to the U.S. economy every year.”

He encourages la raza (the race) to stay positive. “We just need to have somebody, you know, give us the pat on the back and represent us correctly.”

Critical Thinking is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. You can also rent or buy it on Vudu, iTunes, DirectTV and FandangoNow.

by Anonymousreply 5September 18, 2020 12:24 PM

There was some great entertainment this year. Like, Gentefied & Love, Victor. Thanks to Corona One Day At A Time's latest season on Pop was cut short.

by Anonymousreply 6September 18, 2020 12:26 PM

I stopped reading after I saw they were using "LatinX".

by Anonymousreply 7September 18, 2020 12:28 PM

I sort of get where he's coming from because I'm Hispanic. However, I have thought some of the recent Hispanic/Latino shows aren't all that great and not Emmy worthy either. Love, Victor is probably the best recent one.

by Anonymousreply 11September 18, 2020 12:34 PM

I'm tired of all this. If you only get an award because you're black, because you're Latinx, because you're gay, trans, or non-binary, then you didn't really earn it. You deserve the award if you're truly the best at what you do. If the best performance of the year is from a person in these categories then by all means give it to them. If the best show or movie centers around these groups of people and their struggles then they deserve it. But not just because you have to fill a quota.

by Anonymousreply 12September 18, 2020 12:40 PM

Bravo, R12. I agree completely. Well said.

by Anonymousreply 13September 18, 2020 12:44 PM
I have thought some of the recent Hispanic/Latino shows aren't all that great and not Emmy worthy either. Love, Victor is probably the best recent one.

Vida (on the Starz channel) has gotten good reviews, though nobody I know has ever seen it.

by Anonymousreply 14September 18, 2020 12:45 PM

R11 But... but... that's LITERAL VIOLENCE! I'm EXHAUSTED!

by Anonymousreply 15September 18, 2020 12:45 PM

R12 I'm tired of it too, but because of these stupid identities. You can't claim to stand against colonialism or mock out anti vaxxers without being a hypocrite if you push words like "lantix" or replace sex with "gender" bullshit like "non binary".

It's sexist, regressive, crap that will roll back actual progress. Notice they don't even respect the actor, by forcing "lantix" into the article, despite him using latin.

by Anonymousreply 16September 18, 2020 12:46 PM

Whoops! I meant to put R12! See, I'm SO TIRED of having to explain things to you all that I mixed my numbers up. Not my fault, you all need to DO BETTER!

by Anonymousreply 17September 18, 2020 12:46 PM

^Ahem, now I have that out of my system, I will just say as myself, I really would love to see more and more diversity on our screens, and would be much more interested in shows like that, and at the same time I also agree with R12. It should be about equal opportunities to make stuff, people not getting shut out because of their background, but then when it comes time to award, it should be for the best product, irrespective of who made it, who was in it, etc.

by Anonymousreply 18September 18, 2020 12:49 PM

The article quotes him saying Latino but changes it to Latinx in the author’s text.

Maybe he didn’t get nominated for.for. It using the proper woke term for himself.

by Anonymousreply 19September 18, 2020 12:50 PM

R12

You really don’t get it. Before complaining it was 99% white, straight/closeted actors rewarded.

People were, and still are, being rewarded simply for being white and straight. POC and gays have been boxed out of the entertainment industry for generations.

by Anonymousreply 20September 18, 2020 12:50 PM

This has nothing to die with race. There’s simply a dearth of great story tellers. Trump has inflamed the right for individuals to express their unique selfishness by weaponing a group of like-minded people- that knows no racial boundaries. Always look for the ulterior motive. And I like John!

An individual’s rights vs. the greater good. A tale as old as time and could take down civilization as we know it.

by Anonymousreply 21September 18, 2020 12:52 PM

Anytime someone complains about someone not getting a nomination, they must then tell us who did not deserve their nomination. And it can't be based on personal opinion you need solid justification, Pia Zadora level justification.

by Anonymousreply 22September 18, 2020 12:56 PM

If he wanted to see true change, John could be scouring Latino high schools for the Latin screenwriters of the future and reward them with full scholarships for screenplay entries.

by Anonymousreply 23September 18, 2020 12:58 PM

One Day at a Time, Genteified, Diary of a a Future President, Vida, On My Block, The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia, Charmed, Mr. Iglesias, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, Mayans MC ... all are majority Latino cast.

I think The Latinofied version of Party of Five was canceled, though, as was The Baker and the Beauty.

by Anonymousreply 24September 18, 2020 1:00 PM

What a load of bull crap. Us gays are being told for decades that the mainstream will not buy an openly gay man as straight lead, and they don't find that sort of thing appealing. You seriously expect an openly gay man would receive an award simply because - all of a sudden - Hollywood and the world has gone mad and go "Why, yes his performance was so good he deserves it! I was so riveted by his performance and he was totally convincing as straight!".

Hollywood and the mainstream is fucking biased. No minority will ever receive actual mainstream success, award recognition or crediblity base on his or her own so-called merit. Because they can't relate to anyone outside their own tribe. It's all "Oh, let's score come brownie and woke points and throw these minorities a bone or two. Makes us look like decent people!"

by Anonymousreply 26September 18, 2020 1:13 PM

A lot of this has to do with demographics and eyeballs, especially youth and certain subculture that have less to do with ethnicity and more about families and local influence (big cities or rural town)The industry was shocked to discover how much viewing time was eroded away during the pandemic- that wasn’t devoted to news, movies, TV or streaming...

But GAMING.

No, it just means black people have raised hell until Hollywood came to terms with the fact that America is not lily-white and all stories deserve to be told. It's time for Latinos and Asians to use the same tactics. You know who'll stand behind them if they do? The black community.

R25, isn't that considered a logical fallacy?

by Anonymousreply 34September 18, 2020 1:25 PM

You are so ignorant. Several BLM leaders and many activists are gay.

by Anonymousreply 35September 18, 2020 1:26 PM

He thinks gay=white

by Anonymousreply 36September 18, 2020 1:27 PM
He has a point. In 2020, diversity just means black.

There’s only so much airtime they can throw away to show their wokeness and diversity. They also have to make TV shows that a broad audience actually want to watch.

by Anonymousreply 37September 18, 2020 1:29 PM
Just ask the gay community.

The gay community is racist to black people, r32. Especially towards black gay people. What did you expect?

by Anonymousreply 38September 18, 2020 1:29 PM

Not for nothing, some things have had Latinos since Jada spoke up. They have made some more roles for Latinas too.

by Anonymousreply 39September 18, 2020 1:30 PM

It would be quite nice if the minority groups would become strong allies despite the conservatives "Divide & Conquer" strategies like Drop The T.

by Anonymousreply 40September 18, 2020 1:32 PM
Not for nothing, some things have had Latinos since Jada spoke up. They have made some more roles for Latinas too.

True, r39. But it's always black people who put in the work and other minorities get to benefit. The same will happen with BLM.

by Anonymousreply 41September 18, 2020 1:34 PM

R20, that doesn't mean that moving forward the best performances shouldn't win because of the race of the artist. It's the opposite: the race shouldn't matter, including white actors.

by Anonymousreply 42September 18, 2020 1:36 PM

R32 is a good example of the tragedy playing out every day in predominantly white communities across the so-called heartland. These people grow up thinking education stops with high school, and many barely get that far. Then they are set loose upon the world, and given access to a platform like the internet, where they share their ideas with the rest of the world, all the while believing themselves to be on equal footing with their intellectual superiors.

R32, you may have an equal vote (actually, with the electoral college, you are more like an affirmative action voter), And you may have cost us the last election, but make no mistake, We still do not care what you think.

There is a whole topic meant to address ignorance like yours and it’s called intersectionalism. Read up on it and then return to the discussion..

You dumb bitch.

by Anonymousreply 43September 18, 2020 1:36 PM

P.S. I’m black. So stew on that!

by Anonymousreply 44September 18, 2020 1:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 45September 18, 2020 1:38 PM

R43 you do realize all those white Republican men who vote against your rights are College Graduates, right? For some reason you idiots think anyone who thinks like that didn’t go to college. Most of them did, and college means nothing.

by Anonymousreply 46September 18, 2020 1:39 PM

R40, I'd love that too. As long as we're all fighting each other, those in power get away with terrible things.

by Anonymousreply 47September 18, 2020 1:40 PM

Everybody thinks he's smarter and better than everybody else. Only the fools, like racists and other bigots, are delusional enough to base their actions on said belief.

by Anonymousreply 48September 18, 2020 1:41 PM

My coochie coochie has never gotten the recognition it deserved

by Anonymousreply 49September 18, 2020 1:47 PM

And if there's no White people in anything, what's the point of me seeing it?

Let's just divvie up all the art in the world: the Latinos can have theirs, the Blacks can have theirs, and the Whites will stick with the last 500 years of the Western canon and exclude all Blacks from portraying Shakespeare, becoming ballet dancers (a wholly European artform), playing classical music . . . in fact, why doesn't Leguizamo start boycotting everything White Europe produced: the combustion engine, aeroflight, vaccines, antibiotics, electricity . . .

Let's get serious about tribalism, shall we?

by Anonymousreply 50September 18, 2020 1:54 PM

R43, I understand the concept of intersectionality. I also the reject the idea of a victim hierarchy. I understand there are gay and transgender people who are black. I also know understand firsthand how much virulent homophobia exists within the black community. And if you’re black, you know it exists too.

You may not like my opinion, but at least I’m honest. Everyone on this thread can see through your lie.

by Anonymousreply 51September 18, 2020 1:57 PM

Want Latino stories, put on Telemundo or Univision. Or build you're own production house like the Madea creator.

by Anonymousreply 52September 18, 2020 2:00 PM

Latinos make up a bigger percentage of America than blacks yet it blacks that are in every tv show and film and across every medium of media.

Yet blacks still complain about not being represented enough.

by Anonymousreply 53September 18, 2020 2:06 PM

R53

It’s make up for all those years black people were left out, and only rarely rewarded for playing slaves.

Enough with this us vs them argument pitting minorities against each other.

I would also like to add Latin isn’t a race. And guess what? Afro-Latinos have much less representation than lighter Latinos.

by Anonymousreply 54September 18, 2020 2:17 PM

R54, Screw you, you shit-for-brains racist motherfucker.

by Anonymousreply 55September 18, 2020 2:25 PM

Emmys are stupid. You submit yourself.

That being said, no Latin actors from Better Call Saul got nominated? Or Get Shorty?

That’s bullshit.

There were some strong performances from Michael Mando and Giancarlo Esposito, Goya Robles and Lidia Porto.

I have no idea who got nominated instead of them - I’m guessing mainstays that are just expected to be, like Candice Bergen and John Larroquette were for years.

by Anonymousreply 56September 18, 2020 2:30 PM

R56 That's the problem. You say it's bullshit but have no idea who was nominated or whether they gave better performances or not. So maybe it's not bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 57September 18, 2020 2:33 PM

At the very moment I opened this thread, I was watching the OTA channel Estrella to try to improve my Spanish. There are a lot of Mexican movies on that channel -- some good, some mediocre. I also get OTA Univision and Telemundo.

There is plenty of media starring Latino/as. It just depends on where you look.

by Anonymousreply 58September 18, 2020 2:47 PM

Most Mexican/Latin American movies and series are undeniably shit. And most American movies and series with Latino/Latina leads are also undeniably shit. It's not about race or anything; shit is simply shit.

How shitty are they? If they begged me to download them from t-0-rr-ent for free, I would have to think very hard about it!

by Anonymousreply 66September 18, 2020 4:51 PM

Clooney said something like put all five us in the Batman suit and judge who does it best; that's the only way.

I would have given Heath the Oscar for Brokeback but more voters felt Hoffman was better playing Capote.

In the end, who cares; I like who I like.

For the record, my favorite Batman (Batmen?) in order: West, Kevin Conroy, Affleck, Kilmer, Clooney, Bale, and Keaton.

by Anonymousreply 67September 18, 2020 4:56 PM

The 'problem' is that the Spanish-speaking networks (Univision, Telemundo) have very high ratings and share in the Latino market. Some of the local TV news shows are the highest ranked shows in large Latino US cities.

There could be a perception that Latino stories would work better on these networks.

Obviously this doesn't reflect the larger, younger English-speaking Latinos, but I suspect it does have an impact on the shows being developed.

by Anonymousreply 68September 18, 2020 4:58 PM

That’s really interesting. Being that the United States = a couple of hundred yrs of whites rewarding whites for being white and nonwhites excluded for being nonwhite.

Donald Trump could be elected president, despite being an unfit woefully unqualified con man because he is a white male. His woefully unqualified appointees are the products of white privilege and the “good ole boy network.”

Yet we pretend that the United States is a color blind meritocracy and whites are simply being rewarded for being superior to everyone else. Perhaps that’s a wonder self esteem booster. However, it is a myth, a myth called white supremacy.

Of course these awards shows in which Datalounge’s are overly invested are silly subjective and often political. However, the mentality expressed over and over again (in these discussions) = the same clueless white supremacist bullshit that gave us a Trump presidency, will potentially re-elect him and that is destroying this country.

By the way Latino or LatinX is not a race. Latino = black, white, blue or green.

by Anonymousreply 92September 19, 2020 3:42 AM

by Anonymousreply 93September 19, 2020 3:49 AM

Didn't John also initially lie about being Puerto Rican and nothing else? A friend always insisted Leguizamo was an Italian name, so who knows.

"Leguizamo was born in Bogotá, Colombia, the son of Alberto and Luz Leguizamo. His father was once an aspiring film director and studied at Cinecittà, but eventually dropped out due to lack of finances. According to Leguizamo, his paternal grandfather was of Italian and Puerto Rican descent, and his maternal grandmother was Lebanese. He has also described himself as being of Mestizo heritage.

On June 10, 2011, Leguizamo's father declared in an interview with New York Hispanic newspaper El Diario La Prensa that he is Colombian and not Puerto Rican, and that Leguizamo is therefore not half Puerto Rican as he has always stated.

Leguizamo had always declared that he was Puerto Rican on his father's side, which was one of the reasons he was selected as the Puerto Rican Day Parade Global Ambassador of the Arts. In response to his father's allegations, Leguizamo reiterated that his grandfather was of Puerto Rican descent. A National Puerto Rican Day Parade spokesman stated that Leguizamo would keep his ambassadorship. He marched in the parade on June 12, 2011."

Will the REAL John Leguizamo please stand up!

I'm insulted that people who are not Puerto Rican claim to be Puerto Rican... like me!

by Anonymousreply 95September 19, 2020 4:30 AM

"I got more legs than a bucket of chicken".

by Anonymousreply 96September 19, 2020 5:00 AM

he clearly has some indigenous background.

by Anonymousreply 97September 19, 2020 8:40 AM

What are the Emmy's? Have I ever been nominated or won?

by Anonymousreply 98September 19, 2020 8:56 AM

Latinas drive the Box Office and have done so for the last 5 years, yet Latinos are still underrepresented in media while Blacks are now overrepresented in absolute numbers.

Granted this is long overdue, I take no issue with the overrepresentation of Blacks but I do think that it's about time us Latinos have our share. The major problem with representation in the industry is that many Latinos also perceive themselves as whites and many are actually white. I'm a white Latino, though I'm half Jewish so maybe I'm not white-white even though I have pale skin and green eyes.

The MPPA's annual report does imply that Latinos don't care about seeing whites in media and this could be a clue as to why there isn't a bigger push for diversity in this direction.
The gay community is racist to black people, [R32]. Especially towards black gay people. What did you expect?

This stupid generalization is the same as the one that says all Blacks are homophobic, but you already knew that. Meanwhile reality shows us you can't even browse gay Youtube without running into a black/white couple.

by Anonymousreply 101September 19, 2020 11:01 AM

Again, it boils down to good storytelling and solid scripts that transcend. Hollywood is intent on producing more dependable fare.

Also, biographics, cartoons and animation often have very little diversity to offer a cast, yet staking more nominations especially if actor is voicing an animal or an inanimate object like a car.

by Anonymousreply 102September 19, 2020 1:14 PM

You do know we’re talking about the Emmys, right r102?

by Anonymousreply 103September 19, 2020 1:17 PM

R103, there are plenty of past nominated animations with talking animals, and where cis men do voiceovers for women (Bob’s Burgers) and period series that would be difficult or near impossible to represent different color actors in without falling flat- like Sherlock.

Find and design solid storytelling around Latin actors instead.

by Anonymousreply 104September 19, 2020 1:50 PM

R100 Also added that Latinos have an entire Spanish-language media market all to themselves and aren't as bothered by low representation in English-language media.

by Anonymousreply 105September 19, 2020 6:40 PM

I don't know a single Latino who watches Telemundo or anything that's in Spanish, what you claim in my experience and of any Latino I know is false. The only people watching telenovelas and Telemundo are grandmas and immigrants who can't speak English. My younger cousins are all watching Riverdale and Netflix/Hulu shows. They don't even bother watching telenovelas anymore with my grandma. Matter of fact my grandma's favorite show is Dancing with the Stars and The Voice.

by Anonymousreply 106September 19, 2020 7:14 PM

Your anecdotes aside, R106, there are an awful lot of people watching Spanish-language TV in America:

Ratings week of July 27, 2020 to August 2, 2020

For the tenth consecutive week, Univision finished as the No. 1 network on all of television in primetime, out-delivering ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, The CW and all cable networks with 252,000 Adults 18-34, marking the longest weekly winning streak of any network since the 2010/2011 season.

Univision ranked as the second most-watched network during primetime, outperforming ABC, CBS, FOX, The CW and all cable networks with 556,000 Adults 18-49 as well as the fifth-largest broadcast network, ahead of The CW with 1.5 million Total Viewers 2+.

Univision out-delivered one or more of the English-language broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC or FOX) on every night last week among Adults 18-34 and on six out of seven nights among Adults 18-49.

by Anonymousreply 107September 19, 2020 7:29 PM

He’s not wrong.

Every “diverse” commercial on TV:

White people? CHECK!

Black people (preferable cool, younger black girl)? CHECK!

Asian? CHECK!

Ummm... some ambiguously brown person who would be “the rest”? CHECK!

by Anonymousreply 108September 19, 2020 7:33 PM

He really hit the wall.

I kind of understand what he's saying, but how many shows are there about Asians, Native Americans, the disabled, and other marginalized groups?

by Anonymousreply 109September 19, 2020 7:50 PM

People bitch about Asian representation, but really how many Asians go into the acting profession in the first place?

by Anonymousreply 110September 19, 2020 10:43 PM
There were some strong performances from Michael Mando and Giancarlo Esposito, Goya Robles and Lidia Porto.

Giancarlo Esposito is not Latino. He's half Italian and half black. He's Latin the way a Frenchman is Latin.

by Anonymousreply 111September 20, 2020 11:26 AM

Oh gawd.....what next.....browns, yellows, blacks and polka dot.....ev one gets their day

by Anonymousreply 112September 20, 2020 11:29 AM

With Leguizamo boycotting it, they may as well cancel.

by Anonymousreply 113September 20, 2020 11:40 AM

We'll struggle along, somehow, whoever your name was.

by Anonymousreply 114September 20, 2020 11:43 AM

LOL....

by Anonymousreply 115September 20, 2020 11:43 AM

Where is MY emmy?!

by Anonymousreply 116September 20, 2020 11:43 AM

Or mine????

by Anonymousreply 117September 20, 2020 11:43 AM

What about OUR Emmys???

by Anonymousreply 118September 20, 2020 11:45 AM

Latino television is too HOT and SPICY for white audiences.

by Anonymousreply 119September 20, 2020 12:13 PM

"Vida" is awful. I made it through 2 episodes before bailing. Whoever was writing that dialogue didn't know the first thing about how Mexican Americans actually speak.

I managed to make it through the entire season of "Gentefied" only because the two young guys were cute, and because Joaquin Cosio is a great actor. But the show itself was super unrealistic and ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 120September 20, 2020 12:25 PM

poor biddy jus want sum publicity

by Anonymousreply 121September 20, 2020 12:25 PM

Is he also boycotting the Harlem Globetrotters since there’s no white players?

by Anonymousreply 122September 20, 2020 12:42 PM

He is one of the most annoying actors, he should be thanking his lucky stars that he even gets hired

by Anonymousreply 123September 20, 2020 12:48 PM

I feel the same way. I'm Hispanic, but my family has lived in New Mexico for over 400 years and I grew up there. A lot of people I grew up around never cared for Spanish language TV. My parents like New Mexican Spanish music, but all the movies and TV shows they watch are in English.

A few years ago, a friend who I grew up with was in the hospital for a couple of weeks due to cancer surgery and complications. I would visit daily and one day when I went over a nurse came into her room and said that the cable services were restored. There had been some kind of outage earlier in the day and the nurse made the comment that "the Spanish channels should be working too". My friend replied that she has zero interest in watching Spanish channels. The nurse was a bit embarrassed.
He's half Italian and half black.

According to Datalounge, that's redundant.

by Anonymousreply 125September 20, 2020 1:08 PM

He has a point though, LA is like 30% Hispanic, how is there not one show that's not even nominated? Plenty of what trash will be on stage for sure.

by Anonymousreply 126September 20, 2020 1:08 PM

It's amusing when posters like r125 try to blame "the DL" in order to post something racist.

by Anonymousreply 127September 20, 2020 1:12 PM

r127 that's a DL in-joke, you musn't have seen all the many threads about Italians. We've got some real nuts on here.

by Anonymousreply 128September 20, 2020 1:13 PM

R106 Everyone I know has Univision blaring in the background at their house 24/7.

by Anonymousreply 129September 20, 2020 1:15 PM

On my Block is one of the best shows I have seen in the last few years, yet it gets virtually no critical acclaim or awards

by Anonymousreply 130September 20, 2020 1:16 PM

Not sure. Did anyone miss him??? Did the world cease spinnng?

by Anonymousreply 131September 20, 2020 1:43 PM
"Vida" is awful.

I don't think it's awful, but I was not as enraptured of it as critics were:

100% positive critic rating and 75% positive audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Time Magazine: "What I love about Vida—the reason that I hope people will keep discovering it even after its deeply satisfying series finale—is how close it comes, especially in its second and third seasons, to capturing the rhythms of real, embodied life."

Hollywood Reporter: "A triumph of personal vision and uncompromising complexity."

I think if weren't on a third-tier pay-cable network (Starz) and it wasn't so sexually explicit, it could have gotten some nominations.

by Anonymousreply 132September 20, 2020 2:22 PM

Maybe you don’t see Latin stories because most of them integrate into US society & become ordinary Americans

Maybe you don’t see Latin stories because most of them integrate into US society & become ordinary Americans

by Anonymousreply 134September 20, 2020 2:46 PM

Hollywood doesn’t employ Latinos. Both ATAS and AMPAS have said so in their annual reports for the last 10 years. You cannot nominate individuals of a group if you don’t employ them.

by Anonymousreply 135September 20, 2020 3:26 PM
Maybe you don’t see Latin stories because most of them integrate into US society & become ordinary Americans

They are not integrated because they are not employed.

by Anonymousreply 136September 20, 2020 3:29 PM

John should play some more gay roles.

He's the epitome of bi.

by Anonymousreply 137September 20, 2020 3:30 PM

R137

Is he really bi? Asking because I’ve never followed this man before lol. What’s the tea?

by Anonymousreply 138September 20, 2020 3:37 PM

Has Lucy Arnaz commented?

by Anonymousreply 139September 20, 2020 3:39 PM

r125 Esposito's dad is Italian from Italy. I think he was born and partly raised in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 140September 20, 2020 3:41 PM
Maybe you don’t see Latin stories because most of them integrate into US society & become ordinary Americans
They are not integrated because they are not employed.

Every landscaper in my area is Latin. Keep in mind landscapers charge $100k to put in an herb garden here. It’s a lucrative job. As builders are always building more housing out here - now they’re putting in mansions for the adult grandchildren of the 1% - there will always be landscapers needed.

Everyone working in a restaurant is Latin. Kitchen workers, waitstaff. There are Latin restaurants, Latin delis owned by Latin people. You want outdoor maintenance on your house or need a handyman? They will be Latin.

I see employed Latin people everywhere I go. And you know what they all want to do? Become legal, own their own business & vote Republican because they don’t like taxes. And they like Trump because he’s a macho strongman, which is the only kind of leader they respect . I hate to say it, but if these guys become legal, we’re going to have a much larger number of republicans in this blue state. Another thing - when the men marry American women, they marry from the lower classes, who are conservative Republicans (that’s why they remain lower class). Those men marry rightwingers & become rightwingers.

by Anonymousreply 141September 20, 2020 3:55 PM

Latin and Native American are the only demographics that have trended downwards in television representation since the 1990s according to The Academy of Television Arts &Science. It's no surprise most Latin actors and professionals migrate out of Hollywood to find a job. There is also the emergence of Spanish speaking entertainment that is its own niche market.

by Anonymousreply 142September 20, 2020 4:04 PM
I see employed Latin people everywhere I go. And you know what they all want to do? Become legal, own their own business & vote Republican because they don’t like taxes

The majority of Latinos you see [bold]are[/bold] legal citizens. The majority of Latinos [bold]vote Democratic[/bold] by over 60%. The Latino population in the US creates the second largest output of money in taxes. If Latinos in the US were a nation, they would create the 8th largest economy in the world.

You don't have to create a false narrative R141, your post clearly highlights your agenda. An agenda that is not based on telling the truth it seems. Hollywood doesn't employ Latino talent. It's a fact that even the organization that runs the EMMYS agrees on. Heck, they are the ones that are letting us know.

by Anonymousreply 143September 20, 2020 4:15 PM

R132 the thing that drove me to distraction about "Vida" was the way they had certain characters speak.

It's very common for Mexican-Americans to switch between English and Spanish when speaking, or to use certain Spanish words when speaking English. But it's CERTAIN words. There's a way it's done, a flow about it that they totally missed.

They'd have characters saying things like "Ustedes know your hermana doesn't like to talk about eso". NOBODY talks like that, and it was painful for me to listen to. I couldn't take it.

by Anonymousreply 144September 20, 2020 4:24 PM

He looks white to me.

by Anonymousreply 145September 20, 2020 4:36 PM
He has a point though, LA is like 30% Hispanic,

According to the 2020 Census 48.6% of the population is Latino, and this is very observable if you live here.

by Anonymousreply 146September 20, 2020 4:51 PM

By the second generation, English is the mother tongue and mainstream Anglo culture is more familiar than the culture from which the immigrant generation came. Madisyn and Jayden Gonzalez are more likely to watch Outer Banks than Sábado Gigante.

by Anonymousreply 147September 20, 2020 5:24 PM
but my family has lived in New Mexico for over 400 years

Boy, your abuela must be old.

by Anonymousreply 148September 20, 2020 5:46 PM

If you’re white, you have no business saying anything about what he said. Period.

John Leguizamo boycotts the Emmys: 'If you don't have Latin people, there's no reason for me to see it' R35 that is the “ a is everyone” screeching troll. He’s a racist piece of shit. I keep telling you guys.

He thinks gay=white

Not for nothing, some things have had Latinos since Jada spoke up. They have made some more roles for Latinas too.

R43 you do realize all those white Republican men who vote against your rights are College Graduates, right? For some reason you idiots think anyone who thinks like that didn’t go to college. Most of them did, and college means nothing.

He must have forgotten one of the biggest stars in the world in a Latina.

Which shows that Latino people aren’t getting offered good parts r64.

That was what the main issue was with black people also. It wasn’t that they didn’t get roles, it’s that all the good parts are for the white people.

The person upthread claiming to be black and speaking about how homophobic they are is not black. That is the “ a is everyone” troll and the one defending republicans on the 45% thread. He’s white.

by Anonymousreply 149September 20, 2020 7:35 PM

R25 and all, I meant this in a positive way. Too much BS on the thread. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 150September 20, 2020 7:36 PM

Meh. Yawn.

by Anonymousreply 151September 21, 2020 12:30 AM

R99 Black people have been in north America since 1526, that's 494 years 6 years shy of 500 years. Black people have earned everything they have, I don't think anyone should be grudge them anything they have, they earned everything. Especially after everything they've been subjected to and continue to be. I don't even think anyone should be speaking on rather you think they are overrepresented or not in American media and entertainment Hollywood etc.

Asians and Latinos just getting here are fucking crazy for thinking they can come here and just start demanding shit. Everyone has to pay their dues, black Americans have paid more than their share, they should be begrudged nothing at all.

Everyone has to pay dues and put work in, black people have done so for literally 500 years.

by Anonymousreply 152September 21, 2020 12:42 AM
[R99] Black people have been in north America since 1526, that's 494 years 6 years shy of 500 years.

And the native North American ancestors of Hispanic people preceded them by thousands and thousands of years.
Asians and Latinos just getting here are fucking crazy for thinking they can come here and just start demanding shit.

What kind of idiot thinks Latinos just got "here," which you've defined in this post as North America?

Last I checked, Mexico was part of North America

by Anonymousreply 154September 21, 2020 1:37 AM

R128 I do know the threads, my comment stands.

by Anonymousreply 155September 21, 2020 1:40 AM
Asians and Latinos just getting here are fucking crazy for thinking they can come here and just start demanding shit.

Are you stupid? Half of America belonged to Mexico. Natives have been in America far longer than African slaves, open a fucking history book once in your life and quit woke twitter for a change.

by Anonymousreply 156September 21, 2020 1:52 AM

What I said stands. African Americans sit very prominent all throughout American history in a way no other racially ethnic group outside of white America does.

That means something.

by Anonymousreply 157September 21, 2020 2:03 AM
What I said stands.

It literally doesn't.

by Anonymousreply 158September 21, 2020 2:07 AM
What I said stands.

Yes, it stands as a testament to your ignorance and thoughtlessness, and your hateful prejudice against Latino people.

by Anonymousreply 159September 21, 2020 2:10 AM

Please don’t pit black people vs Latinos and Native Americans. Black people did not choose to come here and take their land. They came here with no choice as slaves and have never had any real power in this country.

It is white people who stole the land and power from the Latinos and Native Americans.

by Anonymousreply 160September 21, 2020 2:18 AM

R160 Thank you for that.

by Anonymousreply 161September 21, 2020 2:37 AM

The problem with demanding representation in Hollywood and Hollywood award shows is that Hollywood and its award shows were created by whites, specifically Jews. If Hispanics and blacks want representation in movies they can create their own world-wide film industry and cast anyone they want

by Anonymousreply 162September 21, 2020 5:00 AM
Black people did not choose to come here and take their land. They came here with no choice as slaves and have never had any real power in this country.

by Anonymousreply 163September 21, 2020 7:05 AM

Oh we will miss him......who is he?

by Anonymousreply 164September 21, 2020 7:06 AM

I am so over all the Emmy's anyways, who still watches that stupid self adulation shit? There is already enough of that in the world.

by Anonymousreply 165September 21, 2020 7:18 AM

I can't imagine watching the Emmy's or any other award show ever again. I couldn't care less. I love watching movies but not interested in the awards they bestow on themselves. That goes for any kind of reality tv series or behind the scenes stories of celebs. Celebrity holds no interest for me. We've all got better shit to do right now.

by Anonymousreply 166September 24, 2020 10:57 PM

Like many people, I couldn't wait to watch the Oscars and the Emmys every year. It was a big event. I stopped caring sometime in the 2000s.
