This was one of those mysterious songs when it was released and you knew nothing about the person singing.
Criminal and Shadowboxer are two of her best songs.

I love this song. I do feel that her first album is kind of 50% excellent stuff, 50% not-so-good stuff (she really hit her stride with "When the Pawn..." I feel), but "Shadowboxer" is definitely in the excellent side.*
I have this really weird notion come into my head sometimes; that I can actually imagine Sandra Bernhard performing this song during her stand up. I don't know what that's about, and I don't even like her singing, but I can see her doing it.
*In case anyone is interested, the best of Tidal to me is: "Sleep to Dream", "Sullen Girl", "Shadowboxer", "Criminal" and "Carrion".
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 17, 2020 10:23 PM |
Criminal is her only good song. Meh.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 17, 2020 10:27 PM |
That's such a weird image with the man's feet on the sides of her head.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 17, 2020 10:29 PM |
This track is genius. But I agree her first album was half-baked. She needed a couple more writing sessions and a better producer. I agree with the highlights R2 mentioned but I would add NEVER IS A PROMISE.
She's my favorite singer-songwriter. From WHEN THE PAWN...on, she didn't make a bad album, they all have been brilliant masterpieces. The weakest one is EXTRAORDINARY MACHINE and it's still amazing.

I love Tidal. "Pale September" is possibly my favourite song from it.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 17, 2020 10:30 PM |
Meh. '90s has-been.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 17, 2020 10:37 PM |
Another favorite is Fiona w/Elvis Costello, "I Want You."
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 17, 2020 10:39 PM |
She's for sure being nominated for several Grammys this year for FETCH THE BOLT CUTTERS. <3

I really enjoy this song from her fourth album. I've often wondered, is there a name for this kind of song structure? Where there are various lines that get layered and layered and layered before all coming together at the end? The closes thing I can think of is a "round", but of course that's the same lyrics being staggered, so not quite the same thing.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 17, 2020 10:54 PM |
I don't know if those songs have a specific name or subtype but that was the song that influenced her current sound the most. "Relay", "Newspaper" and specially "On I Go" are very influenced by that track.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 17, 2020 11:08 PM |
Her first album was pretty good. After that, she became an insufferable, unlistenable cunt.
Her music is the same repetitive, narcissistic crap. Me Me Meeeeeeeee
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 17, 2020 11:12 PM |
"Evil is a relay sport when the one who's burnt turns to pass the torch" is a really great line to build a song from. I haven't spent enough time with the latest album yet, but that song definitely stood out to me on first listen.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 17, 2020 11:16 PM |
r11 Nobody cares about the Grammys anymore.
She's a vastly overpraised lyricist. Every song sounds like she spent an hour browsing r/relationships then ran to her thesaurus. She uses the word "mean" in songs even more than Madonna used the word "blue" in Erotica.

I liked her first album, too. She does seem to be a navel gazer. She seems like she'd be the one to call everyone else a "narcissist."

LOVE IT.
She's my soul sister; such a beautiful, crazy bitch.

One-hit wonder, 1990s has-been. Meh.

Fiona Who?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 18, 2020 12:49 AM |
In the late 90's when it seemed like so many of the women we saw on TV were anorexic-thin, I remember someone released one of those basic downloadable computer games containing these women, like Calista Flockhart, Fiona Apple, Courtney Cox etc, and you would feed them by throwing pies and other assorted foods at them. Fiona Apple was referred to as "Fiona Scrapple", I remember that, but can't remember the others. Can find absolutely no reference to this game having existed now, but I'm sure I'm not imagining.

I love “Under The Table”.
Either I adore or hate her individual songs. On the whole, I think she’s brilliant.

Her career has been shit.

R20 Meredith who?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 18, 2020 1:14 AM |
I'm with you, R22. In fact, When the Pawn... is the only album of hers I actually love, start to finish. Every other album has songs I really like and songs I'm "meh" on, but I can never deny that overall she is wonderful. A bit like how I feel towards Regina Spektor too.
The most interesting experience with one of Fiona's albums like that was The Idler Wheel. I could SEE that it was exactly the type of thing I loved - I mean, it's pretty much an album of piano, percussion and voice: my favourites! And yet, while the songs in the middle of the album are all good, I recognise that, they don't particularly move me either. However "Every Single Night" and "Hot Knife" are amazing and I can listen to those two over and over and over. And weirdly, I also know that if this album had been released when I was in my teens, I would've eaten it up entirely.

Shut your mouth. Werewolf doesn't move you? : - (

I love her. she's the emotional sentimental kind of batshit crazy part of my brain.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 18, 2020 1:42 AM |
Afraid it doesn't R27.
And how can I kiss you if I shut my mouth? 😘😉
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 18, 2020 1:49 AM |
She has no appeal. Mediocre. Even her surname is fake.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 18, 2020 1:52 AM |
Anyone remember when she called Chris Rock a "burnt match" on Howard Stern? Yikes.
She's a Lens Dunham type. I don't get the love for her.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 18, 2020 2:47 AM |
Chris Rock called her "Fiona X" after her acceptance speech at the VMA awards. She has no sense of humor about herself. She's a lot of drama.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 18, 2020 5:55 AM |
R32, she’s the kind of crazy woman I love — from a distance. Like Sinead O’Connor and Roseanne and Sandra Bernhard and Little Edie.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 18, 2020 8:25 PM |
Chris Rock saying this week that Democrats brought on the pandemic because of the impeachment trial so fuck him.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 18, 2020 8:38 PM |
To borrow a phrase from my German friends, Chris Rock hat ein Gesicht wie ein Feuermelder.
Or in other words, he has a really punchable face.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 18, 2020 9:24 PM |
I don't like him either, but still, her using a racial slur is curious since she likes to act like some sort of moral arbiter (very Rose McGowan). She's always seemed kind of sleazy to me.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 18, 2020 9:34 PM |
Meh. A flash in the pan '90s "singer". Pouty lips and anorexic body.

Her best song is Cornflake Girl.

r21, in her vanity sized muumuu, is Chris Christie fat and has lost any frame of reference for what a healthy weight actually looks like.

Sandra actually did bring up Fiona and Alanis types in one of her standup routines. She sang Heart instead to compare real rock angst. She thought Alanis and Fiona were just annoying,

Interesting R45, thanks for sharing! I have to disagree with her though, can't stand Heart, would much prefer to listen to Fiona (who I really like) or Alanis (who's first album I have fond memories of).
by Anonymous | reply 47 | October 9, 2020 12:36 AM |
R47, FU. Heart is awesome and Fiona is a silly anorexic twat.

by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 9, 2020 5:56 PM |
With Fetch the Bolt Cutters being released this very year to critical acclaim, Fiona can hardly be considered a "has been", R43.

I love the massive Studer 24 track analog recorder (if that's video of the actual Shadowboxer session.) Many of them now reside in landfills, sadly.
