Dionne on PBS

They were showing this last night on my local PBS station. Dionne was portrayed as being a class act. Lol. The word ACT is appropriate.

You can say that again.

I adored her music and don't give two hoots about her real life persona

by Anonymousreply 2September 13, 2020 4:13 PM

I like her music not her persona.

by Anonymousreply 3September 13, 2020 4:14 PM

She had a beautiful way with a song.

But offstage she's a nasty piece of work.

by Anonymousreply 4September 13, 2020 4:15 PM

As if any of you root-cellar tubers know anything about what a great star is offstage.

Especially (not "expeshully," Patti) one who has been severely attacked by jealous diva wannabes, Republicans, and one particular fat dead empress-in-hear-head southern-fried egotrip over decades.

I say a little prayer for you. Mainly that those warty arches in your house slippers never come up again and you suffer for your lies.

Christ fucking Jesus. And on a Sabbath morning. Shame, you cunts.

Dionne and Whitney were very similar in that way-

Their voices and music made them seem so classy, refined, feminine, and elegant.. Especially Dionne's..

In real life however???

Holy FUCK..

Its kind of funny.

by Anonymousreply 6September 13, 2020 4:27 PM

How many kilos of coke do you think it took her to get through that?

by Anonymousreply 7September 13, 2020 4:31 PM

There's a lot you can say about Dionne, but she was a good parent to her kids. And they turned out very well. College educated, no troubles with the law, no drug busts. One has been a successful producer for twenty years.

by Anonymousreply 8September 13, 2020 4:36 PM

Was she interviewed for it? Did she demand her six ashtrays before agreeing to be filmed?

by Anonymousreply 9September 13, 2020 4:37 PM

You can’t say that about Whitney.

Dionne was even with the PBS announcers as they were begging for pledges.

PBS, don't let that shady bitch near any credit card numbers.

by Anonymousreply 12September 13, 2020 5:01 PM

^ or dead nieces and a camera....

by Anonymousreply 13September 13, 2020 5:04 PM

Or near an AIDS charity.

She is such a cunt but I still love her.

I remember she did that Unique Lives and Experiences Tour a few years ago. It started as a tour of women speakers (now it seems to be mixed). Anyway, Dionne came to Toronto and gave this lame speech about less than 45 minutes about lessons she learned throughout her life. Followed by a Q&A where the bitch refused to answer 80% of the questions. Someone would ask about Michael Jackson. Didn't want to answer. Whitney Houston? Didn't want to answer (to be fair, Whitney hadn't been dead that long when Dionne did the speech).

But the best part of the evening - classic Dionne - was when the poor moderator meekly asked Dionne "Would you mind singing a few bars from one of her classic songs?"

"Yes, I DO mind."

by Anonymousreply 15September 13, 2020 5:10 PM

Anyone ask about Ree?

by Anonymousreply 16September 13, 2020 5:16 PM

Not that I recall but I am sure that would have been good...

by Anonymousreply 17September 13, 2020 5:24 PM

the bitch knew how to put over a song

by Anonymousreply 18September 13, 2020 5:25 PM

Yes, nobody could sing BB as well as her.

Detached, cool, understated yet deeply emotional. She had a unique tone and though her voice wasn’t as powerful as Re’s or Whitney’s could be just as moving, if not more so.

by Anonymousreply 19September 13, 2020 5:30 PM

I still listen to her music. But knowing she's actually a cunt, when I read she filed for bankruptcy a few years ago, I walked on by.

by Anonymousreply 20September 13, 2020 5:30 PM

I always told myself that when I hit the big time, i wanted a house with a garage as big as Dionne's nostrils.

by Anonymousreply 21September 13, 2020 5:36 PM

Definitely not a class act. As for poor Whitney she never got to first base as a human. She was hooked early and went down the drain thereafter despite her great talent. Very very sad. She recorded some nice pop music but essentially never got into the serious business of vocal artistry as say Aretha or Linda or Barbra did. I could say it was because she was too messed up, but then you have Garland who had the same problems (both died at the same age from substance abuse as well) but definitely sang the great songs by the great composers of her time.

by Anonymousreply 22September 13, 2020 5:40 PM

Oh, R22, thank you for including me with the greats Aretha and Barbra! I love you too, darling!

by Anonymousreply 23September 13, 2020 5:45 PM

Aretha or Linda or Barbra all sang a lot of crap, too.

by Anonymousreply 24September 13, 2020 5:49 PM

When you hear "poor" Whitney negatively compared to Barbra, Aretha and Judy......it can have only come from the corpse of charlie. He always shades Whitney that way.

by Anonymousreply 25September 13, 2020 5:54 PM

[quote]Aretha or Linda or Barbra all sang a lot of crap, too.

Barbra especially. God, she's sung some absolute shit songs.

by Anonymousreply 26September 13, 2020 5:56 PM

It's interesting that Dionne's last solo hit was her copying Barbra singing one of those BeeGee's songs with catchy music and stupid lyrics.

by Anonymousreply 27September 13, 2020 6:07 PM

Dionne is a crazy old bitch now, but when she was it she was IT.

by Anonymousreply 28September 13, 2020 6:08 PM

I don't think there's a lot of crap in Linda's catalogue. I think her catalogue stands as one of the best in music.

Aretha and Barbra started off with cream of the crop material, but soon decided to chase after hit material and current producers. Barbra eventually went back to the timeless road but wound up getting mired in lousy production. Interesting that both Aretha and Barbra did stellar work from the early 60's until about the mid seventies, then lost their way for a while. Barbra got immersed in Jon Peters, and Aretha lost weight and moved to California.

Aretha definitely should have tackled jazz again at some point. Unbelievable that she never did another full album of it after leaving Columbia.

by Anonymousreply 29September 13, 2020 6:09 PM

Hussies.

Diane, baby, don’t you mean cellar?

Dionne showed up during Gladys Knight's and Patti Labelle's "Verzuz" battle, which recently aired on Instagram. Very enjoyable segment with these three old girlfriends.

Did they talk about how they all hated Aretha?

by Anonymousreply 33September 14, 2020 4:21 PM

Why the fuck did Dionne crash their engagement? To sing her shitty version of Superwoman?!

by Anonymousreply 34September 15, 2020 12:05 AM

Because a) they're friends and b) to pay tribute to their previous collaborations.

It was a nice surprise for fans.
