What's wrong with Helen Reddy? She's a trailblazing feminist icon and one of the biggest stars of the 70's.

Her divorce from Jeff Wald was also very scandalous at the time and made headlines everywhere.

Has there ever been a biopic on Noel Coward?

There have been two on Cole Porter and neither got it right. They need to do a third with a more realistic actor playing Porter. Maybe someone like Toby Jones.

Dolly had a tv movie made about her as a child. I think we'll have to wait until she dies to get an honest biopic. I'd like to see her early years in Nashville with Porter Waggoner.

Who could blame her. Stevie wants her life to be the subject of the movie, not Lohan's messy life and behavior.

by Anonymousreply 36September 13, 2020 5:43 PM

I Am Frau

Hear Me Whine

by Anonymousreply 37September 13, 2020 6:22 PM

I am Woman was the theme song of the Feminist movement.

Reddy also was a movie star in the 70's as well.

by Anonymousreply 38September 13, 2020 6:47 PM

She made a movie.

She was not a movie star.

by Anonymousreply 39September 13, 2020 6:50 PM

They already made a movie about Karen Carpenter in the late 80's.

Dusty Springfield's has been in production for years now. Kristin Chenowith was supposed to be cast. To be honest, as much as Dusty is talented, she really isn't much of a name in the US, which is probably why no one has been in a rush to do it. Maybe something for the BBC would be better.

by Anonymousreply 40September 13, 2020 7:00 PM

Chrissie Hynde. Except that no one actress could capture all that.

by Anonymousreply 41September 13, 2020 7:01 PM

Chrissy Metz.

It would take a team of actresses to capture all that.

by Anonymousreply 42September 13, 2020 7:11 PM

[quote] Dusty Springfield's has been in production for years now

It's been in the PROPOSAL status for years now. If it were actually in production, that would indicate cameras were on and something was being filmed.

Dusty is well known in America to the original generation who heard her music, and to hipsters who found Dusty in Memphis or heard Preacher Man in....was it Pulp Fiction?

Chenowith was many, many, many, many iterations ago of the Dusty project. The current proposal is that the script has been written by the same person who wrote "Carol" and was originally to be a single 2 hour film, but now might shift to a TV project.

by Anonymousreply 43September 13, 2020 7:20 PM

For what it's worth, I had a roommate back in the 80's who went on a gay cruise on which Helen Reddy was the entertainment.

He'd never been a fan, but he came back RAVING about how great and amazing she was.

I believe that most seasoned performers, even though they might not be your cup of tea, learn how to entertain a crowd.

Helen Reddy grew up in a showbiz family, and was a performer ever since she was a child.

I'm sure she knew all the tricks of the trade and probably put on a really great show in her day.

And I've always thought the lyrics she wrote for "I Am Woman", were really well crafted. It's easy to poke fun, but she created an bonafide anthem.

by Anonymousreply 51September 13, 2020 10:04 PM

Carly Simon has had a pretty interesting life.

She grew up with famous people coming to dinner.

Her mother was having an affair with a young guy living in their house.

She was sexually molested as a child.

She was married to a heroin addict who was also a big pop star.

She fucked Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and every other man Joni fucked.

She's struggled with psychological issues and cancer.

Her grifter daughter stopped speaking to her until she forked over some real estate.

The father of her children STILL won't speak to her.

by Anonymousreply 52September 13, 2020 10:07 PM

R12 & R15, I agree with about Dolly, but she's too fond of quick cash & quick opportunities that will net her the most these days, hence the horrid NBC movies about her childhood. There's a superb, gritty telling of her story just waiting to be told, but Dolly is waaaaay to image conscious to reveal anything other than the same by-now-cliche details with the same punchlines she tells ad nauseam. Love Dolly, but at this point in her career she's just the spokesperson for her very carefully cultivated brand.

by Anonymousreply 53September 13, 2020 10:19 PM

Something more inclusive of Sal Mineo's entire life than James Franco's "last day in the life of" flick, "Sal."

by Anonymousreply 54September 13, 2020 10:20 PM

R52 Um...you left someone important off that list!

by Anonymousreply 55September 13, 2020 10:23 PM

R51, good post. I think Reddy is very worthy of a film about her. She may not seem like the most intriguing individual, but the establishment's reaction to "I Am Woman" makes her story worth telling. When that song out it was as cherished as it was reviled. Those against it quite seriously thought the fabric of civilization was about to come unraveled, while others embraced it proudly as the voice they been waiting for as it reached everyone on every radio. How ironic that the film comes out when the #1 song is about wet ass pussy.

by Anonymousreply 56September 13, 2020 10:29 PM

[quote]Stevie has such a unique sounding voice.

Just play "Imaginary Lover" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section at 45 rpm instead of 33 rpm, and you have it.

by Anonymousreply 57September 13, 2020 10:30 PM

You're so vain, you probably think this biopic is about you.

by Anonymousreply 58September 13, 2020 10:32 PM

A Biopic of Lassie would probably engage my interest slightly more than this movie.

by Anonymousreply 59September 13, 2020 10:35 PM

Helen Reddy was the headliner at a gay pride festival in San Diego about 25 years ago. She did a few hits, then left. The announcer then said over the microphone, "Helen has had to leave to attend a previous social engagement."

by Anonymousreply 60September 13, 2020 10:35 PM

Dolly has been very honest about growing up in Appalachia. Especially in her earlier interviews, which are very revealing.

Some just want Dolly to say she's gay. At this point, who even cares?

by Anonymousreply 61September 13, 2020 10:38 PM

[quote]That dyke's film is getting is even getting a theatrical release.

Well, maybe.

by Anonymousreply 62September 13, 2020 10:40 PM

I remember hearing I Am Woman on the radio as my pre-boomer brother drove us to my grandfather's funeral. He was SO uncomfortable, it really got under his skin. But I liked it and couldn't see the problem.

Glad the old days are gone.

by Anonymousreply 63September 13, 2020 10:44 PM

I know R61, it would be like finding out your great granny is gay.

by Anonymousreply 64September 13, 2020 10:44 PM

Mr Cobain

by Anonymousreply 65September 13, 2020 10:50 PM

Personally I've never thought Dolly Parton was a lesbian. Growing up poor on Appalachia is the least interesting thing about her. Her real story is how a woman who left those circumstances amasses a worth of hundreds of millions of dollars. Her brilliant mind for business & sharp ability to navigate more educated business men is her real story of interest. Outsmarting the entertainment establishment is her true talent.

by Anonymousreply 66September 13, 2020 10:52 PM

You just beat me R65. Kurt Cobain was a talented, fascinating and profoundly troubled guy.

by Anonymousreply 83September 14, 2020 9:14 AM

Dr. Richard Feynman's life would make a fantastic biopic. His autobiographical "Surely You're Joking, Dr. Feynman!" was a joy to read, quite funny too. He's the theoretical physicist who demonstrated to the Rogers Commission how the O-rings failed by immersing them in ice water. He pulled no punches and gave zero fucks. And he played the bongos in his off time.

a reminder to anyone weighing in that a good movie biopic is not about the quality of someone's life or accomplishments. It's about the pursuit of a single goal or relationship in that person's life during a very short period of time. and then its about the take or angle created by the person writing it.
