IT'S PAT (1994)

Visionary statement ahead of its time or a transphobic trainwreck? Why say ye, DL?

by Anonymousreply 77September 5, 2020 10:58 AM

I liked the actress, grew to hate the character.

by Anonymousreply 1September 4, 2020 4:32 PM

I think it’s a mix. Definitely phobic in it’s treatment, but prescient for addressing gender non-conformity at all.

I loved this movie when I was 12.

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2020 4:37 PM

Never seen it.

But does anyone have a link to the Camille Paglia scene?

by Anonymousreply 5September 4, 2020 4:37 PM

Taking an 8 minute skit, with already paper thin material, and turning it into a 2 hour feature film is never a good idea, regardless of the popularity of said skit.

by Anonymousreply 6September 4, 2020 4:37 PM

The movie was way ahead of its time and deserving of cult status.

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2020 4:39 PM

Sorry the previous "trailer" was mislabeled on YouTube - here's the real trailer....

It would never fly now.

And, judging from the box office, it didn't then.

Julia Sweeney was on some comedy-slash-dramedy thing with a big butch dyke in the last year or so where said dyke has an interesting conversation with her about Pat and how it became a point of teasing for a lot of people who kinda looked like Pat.

by Anonymousreply 11September 4, 2020 4:50 PM

It was a one note character that could barely support a 10 minute skit. It’s mind boggling that Hollywood would sink millions into making a movie

by Anonymousreply 12September 4, 2020 4:50 PM

I LOVE this movie! Sheer guilty pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 13September 4, 2020 4:50 PM

DL faves Kathy Griffin and Kathy Najimy appear in small roles, as does hunky Mitch Pileggi,

by Anonymousreply 14September 4, 2020 4:59 PM

Visionary statement ahead of its time!

by Anonymousreply 15September 4, 2020 5:00 PM

Pat -- I'm in a towel. Should I be embarrassed?

by Anonymousreply 16September 4, 2020 5:01 PM

it’s not streaming anywhere (without an additional fee). Do they come to a conclusion on the issue by the end?

by Anonymousreply 17September 4, 2020 5:05 PM

Always loved her - the skit was funny, but everyone knew it wasn't a great idea for a full movie. Of course, she probably made a good sum off of it so why would she turn it down?

She went through a lot with cancer and with her family. There are a number of former SNL actresses that I would love to see more of - Julia Sweeney, Nora Dunn, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri - the list goes on and on.

I don't know why SNL female actresses from that period never got more work. Kate McKinnon is doing great as is Maya Rudolph and Kirsten Wiig. It's like the women before 2000 were just blackballed and forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 18September 4, 2020 5:08 PM

[quote] as does hunky Mitch Pileggi

Is he naked and/or in a Speedo?

by Anonymousreply 19September 4, 2020 5:12 PM

Charles Rocket was hilarious in this. Really sad what happened to him.

It's no Stuart (Smalley) saves his family.

[R18] In the mid-1990's I worked at a talent management company that was involved in a lawsuit with Julia Sweeney over unpaid commissions. After they booked her on SNL and she started getting traction she decided that she no longer needed to pay them a commission on the deal they negotiated for her (standard industry-wide practice). They won the case and she was forced to pay up. She broke a cardinal rule of Hollywood and maybe that had something to do with her fading into oblivion.

by Anonymousreply 22September 4, 2020 5:27 PM

[quote] Do they come to a conclusion on the issue by the end?

And ruin the chance of a sequel?

by Anonymousreply 23September 4, 2020 5:47 PM

IT'S FAT (2021) starring Chrissy Metz

by Anonymousreply 24September 4, 2020 5:50 PM

R12 They made a ton of films of SNL skits in the 90s. The Ladies Man and Mary Katherine Gallagher got movies too.

by Anonymousreply 25September 4, 2020 5:51 PM

The character was not simply presented as androgynous but obnoxious, whiny and creepy.

But I've always hated SNL with a passion. It has just never been funny from day one for me.

by Anonymousreply 26September 4, 2020 5:55 PM

It was no Deuce Bigalo: Male Gigalo.

by Anonymousreply 27September 4, 2020 5:55 PM

People seem to not know A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar MacGruber, and Coneheads were all SNL skits.

by Anonymousreply 28September 4, 2020 5:56 PM

Has there ever been a legitimately good SNL spinoff movie? I don't mean in terms of commercial success but a comedy classic with superb writing, direction and acting.

by Anonymousreply 29September 4, 2020 5:59 PM

[quote] It’s mind boggling that Hollywood would sink millions into making a movie

I can think of a thousand Hollywood films with bigger budgets that were much, much worse and less joyous.

by Anonymousreply 30September 4, 2020 6:00 PM

The only one most people reference and still gets tons of play and there are gifs etc. is A Night at the Roxbury.

Coneheads too, to an extent.

by Anonymousreply 31September 4, 2020 6:01 PM

R29 Wayne's Word and The Blues Brothers

by Anonymousreply 32September 4, 2020 6:02 PM

It would work well as a remake because so many people are talking about transgender issues. Someone like Ellen Page would be able to talk back to ignorant straight people and show them as the bigoted assholes they truly are.

by Anonymousreply 33September 4, 2020 6:10 PM

[R33] Your proposed new version hardly sounds like a lighthearted, crowd-pleasing comedy. Woke is antithetical to humor.

by Anonymousreply 34September 4, 2020 6:14 PM

I thought Superstar with Molly Shannon was really funny. One of the better SNL inspired movies.

by Anonymousreply 35September 4, 2020 6:19 PM

[quote] Deuce Bigalo

Oh, dear.

[quote] Male Gigalo.

Oh, DEAR!

by Anonymousreply 36September 4, 2020 6:23 PM

The original skit was funny on SNL. Stretching out into a full movie was not a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 37September 4, 2020 6:24 PM

I HATED anything to do with the "Blues Brothers."

by Anonymousreply 38September 4, 2020 6:26 PM

Superstar was one of the few SNL movies to work for me. The tone was campy and over the top and they at least attempted to give the film an actual story, light as it was.

by Anonymousreply 39September 4, 2020 6:32 PM

I hated The Blues Brothers.

I liked MacGruber.

by Anonymousreply 40September 4, 2020 6:33 PM

PAT ISN'T TRANS!

Others just can't identify her gender.

by Anonymousreply 41September 4, 2020 6:34 PM

[R41] So Pat's the seminal example of "non-binary"?

by Anonymousreply 42September 4, 2020 6:37 PM

This movie is the opposite of woke. Camille Paglia even appears as herself.

by Anonymousreply 43September 4, 2020 6:38 PM

Don’t say “seminal.” It wounds.

by Anonymousreply 44September 4, 2020 6:59 PM

Don't say woke

by Anonymousreply 45September 4, 2020 7:03 PM

R34 you definitely seem like someone who would know comedy

by Anonymousreply 46September 4, 2020 7:05 PM

[R46] In fact, I do!

by Anonymousreply 47September 4, 2020 7:06 PM

[R46] You think this or a variation of it sounds like a hit comedy? - "talk back to ignorant straight people and show them as the bigoted assholes they truly are" - barrel of laughs, for sure.

by Anonymousreply 48September 4, 2020 7:09 PM

R47 of course

by Anonymousreply 49September 4, 2020 7:14 PM

R48 I'd laugh if Ellen Page was the butt of the joke.

by Anonymousreply 50September 4, 2020 7:14 PM

I love this movie. Aside from the mysterious gender it is comical the way Pat is depicted as completely self centered and oblivious to others needs or feelings.

When I'm upset about something and I realize it's bordering on self pity I still joke with my husband to "feel sorrier for me".

R48 what are a few comedies you recommend?

by Anonymousreply 54September 4, 2020 7:20 PM

R47 what are your top five?

by Anonymousreply 55September 4, 2020 7:21 PM

I'd lump It's Pat with other inappropriate comedies that are funny despite, or rather because of their political incorrectness. Weekend at Bernie's is a good example.

by Anonymousreply 56September 4, 2020 7:23 PM

[R55] SOME LIKE IT HOT, PILLOW TALK, TOOTSIE, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, BRINGING UP BABY - I also adore KEEPING UP APPEARANCES. Too many minor ones to name.

by Anonymousreply 57September 4, 2020 7:27 PM

From Wikipedia: It's Pat has a rare 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 11 reviews.[7] Variety magazine called the film "shockingly unfunny", noting that Sweeney had "perversely turned the relatively harmless TV character into a boorish, egotistical creep for the bigscreen", the film's "only really funny bit is Sexual Personae author Camille Paglia, deftly parodying herself, commenting on the significance of Pat's androgyny".[8] Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times wrote: "It's Pat offers a simple message of self-acceptance, asserting that what counts is who you are rather than what your gender may or may not be. The trouble is that its telling is truly terrible."[9] TV Guide called it "yet another tepid film comedy based on a recurring "Saturday Night Live" sketch". They conclude "the story goes nowhere, and if the film ran longer than its 80 minutes, it would have become too tedious to tolerate".[10] The film opened in only three cities[11] (33 theaters[2]). Its total gross was $60,822. As a result, the film was pulled from theaters after its opening weekend.[citation needed]

by Anonymousreply 58September 4, 2020 7:40 PM

R58 Yes, the film was destroyed by critics. It's ironic how the current SNL is simply political advocacy disguised as humor and the PC slobber all over it. It's Pat is funnier than anything SNL has churned out in years.

by Anonymousreply 59September 4, 2020 7:45 PM

We had an actual Pat in my House at college in the early 80s. They went by their initials. We assumed they were cis-female, but they had very short hair and wore formal men’s clothes.

by Anonymousreply 60September 4, 2020 7:52 PM

Pat's self-centeredness was quite common in 12 step meetings outside of AA (coda, sex anonymous. Alanon) in the 90s/early 00s in my experience. All those people parodied by Stuart Smalley, people without real addictions thinking they nonetheless were suffering and special and others should listen to them (without judgment please, without judgment. ) I remember one female loon yelling she was going blind because her father incested her in the womb. I guess if you're competing in the victim (feel sorrier for me) Olympics, that takes the gold! BTW she was still seeing quite well a decade later.

by Anonymousreply 61September 4, 2020 8:14 PM

[R61] A case of hysterical blindness!

by Anonymousreply 62September 4, 2020 8:52 PM

In one skit, Pat was preparing to go to a dance. Figuring they'd find out the sexuality, someone asked "What are you wearing?" She replied "I'm going formal.:

by Anonymousreply 63September 4, 2020 9:30 PM

I loved Pat Skits on SNL!!

The theme song was funny too... “It’s time for androgyny. It’s just Pat.”

by Anonymousreply 64September 4, 2020 9:49 PM

Sorry. It’s more like “Here comes Pat.”

by Anonymousreply 65September 4, 2020 9:50 PM

R51 crossdressed Dave Foley was just so pretty, prettier than most actual woman.

His Québécoise prostitute character on KITH was my favourite.

R38 that’s vehement. May I ask specifically what it is that you dislike about THE BLUS BROTHERS?

Perhaps if one doesn’t like blues music or musical films in general, it’s a hard pass. Still, I have to say that I personally admire the movie for the way it perfectly marries understated memetic style to lunatic plot. It’s the kind of film that is one of its kind, and the best version of itself it could be. It’s hard to articulate exactly what I mean, except to say that it lead with a kind of assured charisma and steady pace that so many films today lack to their detriment. The music isn’t half bad, either, and it’s a joy to see actors with real musical talent and comedic ability perform for real crowds and play with legit legends of music.

And say what you like about Aykroyd & Belushi (really, say whatever, they were assholes), but they really did bring those characters to life down to fine detail. Their delivery, timing, and presentation is impeccable.

I get that TBB is considered dated, cheesy, and overrated now. I can’t help but love it, anyway.

R66 all the guys on KITH made completely convincing women, and, yes, Dave was attractive in drag.

I also thought Monty Python did drag very well, although there were no lookers in that bunch.

I think the reason it worked was because the drag was never the point of the laughs. They played women "straight" (as it were) without any winking.

by Anonymousreply 68September 5, 2020 12:46 AM

It’s time for eatin me. Eat my ass!

by Anonymousreply 69September 5, 2020 12:50 AM

dave looks like chassie on any sedaris' show.

by Anonymousreply 70September 5, 2020 12:59 AM

[italic]Coneheads[/italic] was my favorite of the 90s SNL features.

by Anonymousreply 71September 5, 2020 1:06 AM

Kind of a weird gig for Foley to take. Maybe it was a favor to Lorne.

by Anonymousreply 72September 5, 2020 1:54 AM

[R67] I respect your passion for the movie but I was very much aware of pop culture at the time of the release of THE BLUES BROTHERS (I had a subscription to Rolling Stone by age 14) and it was a critical bomb. I have never been able to watch the movie from beginning to end - it's too coked out, chaotic and insular for me. It's not as if the direction is creative, as it might have been under, say, Richard Lester a decade before. It's a plodding, obvious movie with a shaky script and a drugged out cast. Belushi and Aykroyd apparently thought they could be singing stars but they couldn't pull off such and act. They tried to make up in bluster what they lacked in skill and it was obnoxious. The other end of the spectrum would be Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. They delivered.

R57 Some Like It Hot with straight men dressed as frumpy flouncing queens to score chicks - HOW VERY WOKE
