Oregon hunter, 66, gored to death by bull elk he had shot and injured with an arrow the previous day

TILLAMOOK, OREGON: An archery hunter was killed by an enraged elk on Sunday, August 30, when he went in search of the animal. Mark David of Hillsboro had reportedly injured the bull elk on Saturday, August 29, with a bow and arrow while hunting on private property near Trask Road East in Tillamook, Oregon.

But the 66-year-old could not kill the 5-by-5 animal that day and also failed to find it before nightfall. So, he decided to search the injured bull the next morning, according to Oregon State Police. David and the property owner went out at around 9:15 am on Sunday in search of the animal. After locating the elk, the victim tried to kill it again but the injured animal attacked him and gored him in the neck with his antlers. “The landowner attempted to help David but he sustained fatal injuries and died,” Oregon State Police said. The police added that after an investigation, the elk was killed and its meat was donated to the Tillamook County Jail.
So, he decided to search the injured bull the next morning,

So he frisked an elk?

by Anonymousreply 1September 4, 2020 5:54 AM

Was he menstruating?

by Anonymousreply 2September 4, 2020 5:54 AM

This is too much.

Please tell me the bull lived.

by Anonymousreply 3September 4, 2020 5:55 AM

I'm totally against killing an animal for sport.

Too bad about the hunter, but wonder if before he died he suddenly developed a better appreciation of karma.

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2020 6:03 AM

Poetic justice.

by Anonymousreply 5September 4, 2020 6:06 AM

This story hurts my heart for the elk. Fuck the hunter. He got what he deserved. RIP to the Elk.

by Anonymousreply 6September 4, 2020 6:07 AM

In another incident, an Arkansas hunter was killed after a deer that he shot and thought was dead, allegedly got back up and attacked him. The incident happened on October 22, 2019, at around 6.30 pm during a hunt in Yellville near Fayetteville.

The victim identified as Thomas Alexander was an experienced hunter, who had lived in the Yellville, Arkansas, area for several years. According to Keith Stephens, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the 66-year-old was using a muzzleloader when he shot the buck. “He apparently went over to the buck and it got up and attacked him," Stephens added. Alexander reportedly called his wife and rushed to the nearby hospital at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home at approximately 8 pm, where he was declared dead.

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2020 6:08 AM

That elk was minding his own business and that man had no business trying to murder him like that. Just all around senseless death.

by Anonymousreply 8September 4, 2020 6:09 AM
Please tell me the bull lived.

The article says it was killed.

by Anonymousreply 13September 4, 2020 6:20 AM

Hunters? Oh, they are just cunters. Civilized people don't end others' lives. Deplorable. Gag and die.

by Anonymousreply 14September 4, 2020 6:20 AM

Imagine the pain that poor animal was in all night.

by Anonymousreply 15September 4, 2020 6:28 AM

Just on a finer point it doesn’t say anywhere in the article that either of the men that were killed were hunting purely for sport. I’d hazard a guess that if it was deer / elk that were being hunted then it was likely for food or a sport / food combo. So anyone here waxing on about poetic justice that 1) eats meat, 2) wears leather 3) eats diary or uses any products containing animal products or tested on animals needs to glance in the mirror.

by Anonymousreply 16September 4, 2020 6:41 AM

I don't object too strenuously if the hunter is going to eat the animal and feed his family, etc etc. And if there is overpopulation. But you take your risks and he failed and sounds like he was a LOUSY hunter and made an animal suffer.

by Anonymousreply 17September 4, 2020 6:45 AM

Oh no! He got the Berkowitzes!

by Anonymousreply 18September 4, 2020 6:47 AM

R16, leaving your food to suffer for hours before it dies is something they'd do in China

by Anonymousreply 19September 4, 2020 6:48 AM

Poor animal. Hunter got what he deserved.

by Anonymousreply 20September 4, 2020 6:54 AM

I’d like to substitute “Oregon hunter, 66...”, with “Trump’s spawn, Beavis and Butthead, gored to death...”

by Anonymousreply 26September 4, 2020 7:56 AM

R16 the guy was specifically an 'archery hunter' it says in the article, so far more likely to cause pain to the animal. He was some sort of fantasist doing it for fun, whatever the claims about eating the meat..

by Anonymousreply 27September 4, 2020 8:12 AM

At least the elk got his revenge and took down his tormentor / murderer with him.

by Anonymousreply 28September 4, 2020 9:01 AM

Now who's the dumb animal?

by Anonymousreply 34September 4, 2020 12:01 PM

R16 is right. Humans are omnivores and eating flesh is an important part of our diet. I think it’s much better for animals to live free in their natural environment and have a fighting chance in the hunt, and to (usually) die quickly (this story is the exception), than to lived in a dirty, overcrowded pen full of other frightened, miserable animals, then to be dispatched by a boltgun to the skull.

Those of you decrying this hunt while eating burgers, chicken or even eggs — you underwrite that endless mass torture.

by Anonymousreply 35September 4, 2020 12:37 PM

R35? Which part of allowing the animal to suffer all night didn't you understand?

I have no problem with hunters who hunt for food - I do have a problem with allowing the "food" to be in pain all night while you go sleep KNOWING the animal is alive and undoubtedly in horrific pain.

by Anonymousreply 36September 4, 2020 1:14 PM

R35 I would agree with you except for your assertion that meat is an important part of our diet and I would suggest that it can be an important part of our diet but does not necessarily need to be. Vegan diet in its existence proves that (I’m not vegan). Even if chosen as a foodstuff it seems it should be eaten far less (twice a week rather than twice daily) and only fish or white meat, that red meat really is not good for people to eat (stomach cancer, heart problems etc).

I agree that we should rely less on intensive farming systems for meat consumed. This would make meat more expensive which would reduce its consumption by default. Will be required for the continued safety of the planet by all accounts anyway. Sorry rambling!

by Anonymousreply 37September 4, 2020 2:47 PM

You can't just handwave this story away, R35 - you can't really believe America's fun hunters are all crack shots and large numbers of they target don't bleed slowly to death and so on. Attempting to contort this story to suit your own hobby-horse is ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 38September 4, 2020 4:14 PM

Hunting is fine if you don’t hunt endangered species, it’s legal to kill it, and you or someone else will eat the meat.

by Anonymousreply 39September 4, 2020 4:21 PM

I don’t buy the meat being eaten by prisoners. The “donated the meat” story is usually BS.

by Anonymousreply 40September 4, 2020 4:42 PM

R35 Great attempt at whataboutism! No, animal flesh isn’t “ an important part” of our diet. I haven’t eaten meat since 1995.

by Anonymousreply 41September 4, 2020 4:44 PM

If an elk gores a hunter to death in Oregon and no one collected his mail-in ballot, did his vote really count?

by Anonymousreply 42September 4, 2020 4:45 PM

Serious question: how is eating eggs abusive to animals?...

by Anonymousreply 43September 4, 2020 4:47 PM

The friend murdered him and presented this absurd scenario. An investigation will be done, and family and friends interviewed. We will find justice for this hunter and elf, who has been falsely accused of murder.

R43 There’s tons of articles about it...

by Anonymousreply 46September 4, 2020 4:56 PM

It's now clear that humans do not need meat or fish, or any animal protein, to thrive. Vegans who've been such for their whole lives are generally much healthier than non-vegans (although part of that is that people who chose to be vegan are probably more likely to take good care of themselves). Dr. Michael Greger's book, How Not to Die, proves this as well.

Furthermore, animal agriculture is one of the major causes of greenhouse gasses. And, of course, there's the argument that animals shouldn't be considered food for humans for, well, many reasons.

by Anonymousreply 47September 4, 2020 4:57 PM
Serious question: how is eating eggs abusive to animals?...

It’s not if the hens are well cared for. If it’s not fertilized, it’s of no use to the hen.

But we live in an age of factory farming, and it’s difficult to find eggs that aren’t mass produced through abuse of the animals.

The elk pulled something more than just a rabbit out of his hat.

by Anonymousreply 50September 4, 2020 5:03 PM

When it comes to animal on human attacks, I always stick up for the animal. The human is usually an idiot or worse.

by Anonymousreply 52September 4, 2020 5:21 PM

R48. Male chicks are ground alive in egg farming.

It's one thing to keep a hen for eggs, but most Americans eat eggs produced under conditions that are dreadful. to chickens/chicks.

by Anonymousreply 53September 4, 2020 5:25 PM

I just sent this to my uncle, a huge elk hunting fan, with the words "Thinking of You".

by Anonymousreply 54September 4, 2020 5:27 PM

Isn’t that pretty much what I said, r53?

by Anonymousreply 56September 4, 2020 5:58 PM

Risks and real damage enjoyed by man "vegan" fetishists: hormone imbalances, leaky guts, multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies, DEPRESSION and orthorexia of course. Also being annoying nags in social settings.

by Anonymousreply 57September 4, 2020 6:06 PM

The fat ass meat eating Americans are not healthy. And tragic meat eaters have gotten their due karma time and time again.

by Anonymousreply 58September 4, 2020 6:06 PM

This reminds me of when the guys were shooting at a saguaro cactus (enormous) and it fell on them. Finito.

by Anonymousreply 59September 4, 2020 6:08 PM

RE: eggs

I pay 2 dollars more and get pasture raised chickens' eggs. I can visit them if I so choose--the hens, not the eggs. This month's Hen of the Month is Ivy.

by Anonymousreply 60September 4, 2020 6:10 PM

Love it, may all hunted animals kill their hunters and good riddance.

by Anonymousreply 61September 4, 2020 6:12 PM

Let’s also not forget that COVID 19 originated (almost certainly) as a result of the meat processing industry.

by Anonymousreply 62September 4, 2020 6:48 PM

Well if you call filthy live bush meat markets "the meat processing industry".

by Anonymousreply 63September 4, 2020 6:56 PM

They’re not much worse than our factory farms

by Anonymousreply 64September 4, 2020 6:58 PM

China’s hadn’t either until this year

There’s always a first time

by Anonymousreply 67September 4, 2020 7:09 PM

we don't have bush meat markets in the US.

by Anonymousreply 68September 4, 2020 7:10 PM

well, maybe something approaching that in hunting season in rural areas. I dunno. not being folks, myself.

by Anonymousreply 69September 4, 2020 7:11 PM

[bold]GOOD[/bold]

by Anonymousreply 70September 4, 2020 7:13 PM

R4 & R5 totally agree, POS hunter got what was coming to him

by Anonymousreply 71September 4, 2020 7:21 PM

Domesticated animals suffer 1000 times more--filthy feed lots, cattle prods, lining up to be murdered, sensing the end, it's a horror show. Please consider eating Impossible burgers, Beyond Beef, etc.

There's enough cruelty in the world. Also, meat production is fucking the planet.

by Anonymousreply 72September 4, 2020 7:26 PM

R41, and you look fabulous!

No kidding, I agree with you. But I ate meat (not much of it) until I was 55, so I can't fault the younger omnivores here.

by Anonymousreply 73September 4, 2020 7:29 PM

Pity the hunter wasn’t left gored and dying overnight so he could suffer what he inflicted on the elk.

by Anonymousreply 74September 4, 2020 8:10 PM

This sounds like a moody art movie.
