Oregon hunter, 66, gored to death by bull elk he had shot and injured with an arrow the previous day
TILLAMOOK, OREGON: An archery hunter was killed by an enraged elk on Sunday, August 30, when he went in search of the animal. Mark David of Hillsboro had reportedly injured the bull elk on Saturday, August 29, with a bow and arrow while hunting on private property near Trask Road East in Tillamook, Oregon.
But the 66-year-old could not kill the 5-by-5 animal that day and also failed to find it before nightfall. So, he decided to search the injured bull the next morning, according to Oregon State Police. David and the property owner went out at around 9:15 am on Sunday in search of the animal. After locating the elk, the victim tried to kill it again but the injured animal attacked him and gored him in the neck with his antlers. “The landowner attempted to help David but he sustained fatal injuries and died,” Oregon State Police said. The police added that after an investigation, the elk was killed and its meat was donated to the Tillamook County Jail.

I'm totally against killing an animal for sport.
Too bad about the hunter, but wonder if before he died he suddenly developed a better appreciation of karma.

In another incident, an Arkansas hunter was killed after a deer that he shot and thought was dead, allegedly got back up and attacked him. The incident happened on October 22, 2019, at around 6.30 pm during a hunt in Yellville near Fayetteville.
The victim identified as Thomas Alexander was an experienced hunter, who had lived in the Yellville, Arkansas, area for several years. According to Keith Stephens, a spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the 66-year-old was using a muzzleloader when he shot the buck. “He apparently went over to the buck and it got up and attacked him," Stephens added. Alexander reportedly called his wife and rushed to the nearby hospital at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home at approximately 8 pm, where he was declared dead.

Just on a finer point it doesn’t say anywhere in the article that either of the men that were killed were hunting purely for sport. I’d hazard a guess that if it was deer / elk that were being hunted then it was likely for food or a sport / food combo. So anyone here waxing on about poetic justice that 1) eats meat, 2) wears leather 3) eats diary or uses any products containing animal products or tested on animals needs to glance in the mirror.

I don't object too strenuously if the hunter is going to eat the animal and feed his family, etc etc. And if there is overpopulation. But you take your risks and he failed and sounds like he was a LOUSY hunter and made an animal suffer.

R16 the guy was specifically an 'archery hunter' it says in the article, so far more likely to cause pain to the animal. He was some sort of fantasist doing it for fun, whatever the claims about eating the meat..

R16 is right. Humans are omnivores and eating flesh is an important part of our diet. I think it’s much better for animals to live free in their natural environment and have a fighting chance in the hunt, and to (usually) die quickly (this story is the exception), than to lived in a dirty, overcrowded pen full of other frightened, miserable animals, then to be dispatched by a boltgun to the skull.
Those of you decrying this hunt while eating burgers, chicken or even eggs — you underwrite that endless mass torture.

R35? Which part of allowing the animal to suffer all night didn't you understand?
I have no problem with hunters who hunt for food - I do have a problem with allowing the "food" to be in pain all night while you go sleep KNOWING the animal is alive and undoubtedly in horrific pain.

R35 I would agree with you except for your assertion that meat is an important part of our diet and I would suggest that it can be an important part of our diet but does not necessarily need to be. Vegan diet in its existence proves that (I’m not vegan). Even if chosen as a foodstuff it seems it should be eaten far less (twice a week rather than twice daily) and only fish or white meat, that red meat really is not good for people to eat (stomach cancer, heart problems etc).
I agree that we should rely less on intensive farming systems for meat consumed. This would make meat more expensive which would reduce its consumption by default. Will be required for the continued safety of the planet by all accounts anyway. Sorry rambling!

You can't just handwave this story away, R35 - you can't really believe America's fun hunters are all crack shots and large numbers of they target don't bleed slowly to death and so on. Attempting to contort this story to suit your own hobby-horse is ridiculous.

It's now clear that humans do not need meat or fish, or any animal protein, to thrive. Vegans who've been such for their whole lives are generally much healthier than non-vegans (although part of that is that people who chose to be vegan are probably more likely to take good care of themselves). Dr. Michael Greger's book, How Not to Die, proves this as well.
Furthermore, animal agriculture is one of the major causes of greenhouse gasses. And, of course, there's the argument that animals shouldn't be considered food for humans for, well, many reasons.

[quote] Serious question: how is eating eggs abusive to animals?...
It’s not if the hens are well cared for. If it’s not fertilized, it’s of no use to the hen.
But we live in an age of factory farming, and it’s difficult to find eggs that aren’t mass produced through abuse of the animals.
