Trump thinks soldiers who died in wars are "suckers" and "losers"

Because of course

by Anonymousreply 600September 6, 2020 8:24 PM

Nothing surprises me at this point.

Absolutely nothing.

by Anonymousreply 1September 3, 2020 10:15 PM

Trump is a piece of shit who doesn't know how the real world works. Not everyone was able to dodge the draft multiple times. I hope Biden calls that one out at the debate!

by Anonymousreply 2September 3, 2020 10:16 PM

R2, me too!

by Anonymousreply 3September 3, 2020 10:21 PM

Yes Biden campaign needs to target this particularly in areas with a large military pop

by Anonymousreply 4September 3, 2020 10:22 PM

Stupid cunt needs to STFU or a veteran just might take him out... and I don't mean to lunch.

by Anonymousreply 5September 3, 2020 10:26 PM

We lurves him and we veterans.

Bounty? Oh, you mean the paper towels?

by Anonymousreply 6September 3, 2020 10:30 PM

He is such a fucking pig. We all knew that, but shit, sometimes the fucking piggery just seems worse. Just wish this kind of thing would penetrate into the ranks of the many soldiers and veterans who think that because an R after his name he's automatically a great patriot and a lover of the military.

by Anonymousreply 7September 3, 2020 10:31 PM

This must come to the forefront in the news. Veterans will vote against him.

by Anonymousreply 8September 3, 2020 10:35 PM

Trump Bone Spurs who lied to get out of entering the service at the time when the Vietnam War was underway is a coward...and a loser himself. Don't forget, he also had someone take his SATs to get into college.

by Anonymousreply 9September 3, 2020 10:46 PM

And yet this will make him even more beloved by the Deplorables.

"He says his mind."

"You know where he's coming from."

And by far, the most important: "He isn't PC."

by Anonymousreply 10September 3, 2020 10:50 PM

R10 You missed the part where they deny it first, or say he doesn't mean it. And then when it comes out it's true/he does mean it - that's when they say what you said.

by Anonymousreply 11September 3, 2020 11:17 PM

r10, don't forget the Deplorable cry regarding EVERYTHING:

"Fake news!"

by Anonymousreply 12September 3, 2020 11:17 PM

I was just joking.

Like when I said we should cut down coronavirus testing so the numbers don't look bad

And when I said everyone should vote twice

And when I said we should destroy the post office so people can't vote by mail

I'm a real kidder

by Anonymousreply 13September 3, 2020 11:21 PM

All I can say is if this cunt gets reelected, you guys deserve every fucking thing that's gonna come at you.

He's a fucking disgrace and how his defeat is not a certainty is frankly beyond me.

by Anonymousreply 14September 3, 2020 11:26 PM

Here's an article from 2017 on how he was screwing veterans.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 15September 3, 2020 11:26 PM

And don't forget his declaration to disinherit any child of his who joins the military.

Because people who volunteer are suckers. Such a Sonny Corleone attitude. "Your country ain't your blood."

People who lie die of cancer! Muahahaha!

by Anonymousreply 17September 3, 2020 11:28 PM

LMFAO, I can totally see him saying something like that. I remember at that time there were rumours that the reason for cancellation was his concern for the hair.

As I said before, just let Trump do the campaigning. Biden just can sit back, relax, and enjoy his march to the White House.

by Anonymousreply 18September 3, 2020 11:28 PM

Nothing surprises me, and what's so stupid, is some people think things like this will impact his supporters and maybe make them change their mind. It won't. His supporters worship him. The man could slice the throat of an infant on stage, and his worshippers would figure out a way to still defend him.

He needs to drop dead.

by Anonymousreply 19September 3, 2020 11:30 PM
he was screwing veterans

Pics please.

by Anonymousreply 20September 3, 2020 11:30 PM

Fact: Deplorables love Trump for one reason and one reason only:

Trump hates the same people they do: niggers, spics, fags, chinks, gooks and Jews.

by Anonymousreply 21September 3, 2020 11:30 PM

I'm thinking about changing the name of Veterans Day to "Loser Day"

I think it has a nice ring to it

by Anonymousreply 22September 3, 2020 11:35 PM

Well they did lose - their lives. Suckers is a little harder to defend. Were they suckers for being inducted into the military? No.

by Anonymousreply 23September 3, 2020 11:59 PM
The man could slice the throat of an infant on stage, and his worshippers would figure out a way to still defend him.

Yes but didn’t God ask the same of Abraham??

by Anonymousreply 24September 3, 2020 11:59 PM

I’m sure they’d find a way to whataboutism it.

You libs like killing babies so why should you care?

by Anonymousreply 25September 4, 2020 12:05 AM

There was a Military Times poll conducted this summer (late July/early August) that showed Trump losing to Biden among active service members. Trump was at 37.4 percent, Biden at 41.3. His unfavorables were higher among officers (59%) than enlisted troops (47%).

His sociopathcally contemptuous attitude isn't winning him anything.

by Anonymousreply 34September 4, 2020 1:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 35September 4, 2020 1:19 AM

by Anonymousreply 36September 4, 2020 1:21 AM

Has there ever been a president who so obviously and viciously hates the very country he is supposed to serve and protect? It's astounding.

by Anonymousreply 37September 4, 2020 1:21 AM

Biden needs to make a formal military speech calling Trump out on his contempt for those who serve.

by Anonymousreply 38September 4, 2020 1:22 AM

You all are full of shit!

by Anonymousreply 39September 4, 2020 1:24 AM

This is repellant. Trump won the veteran's vote 2-1 even after disparaging a Gold Star family as well as the service of POW Sen. John McCain! Fuck them! Fuck veterans, they really are "losers" and shit for brains for overwhelmingly electing Donald Trump.

If vets are so degraded why do we have to pretend to ever give a fuck about them again? I certainly do not. Maybe they can earn my respect someday, but I still won't really give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 40September 4, 2020 1:28 AM

Clearly, this man doesn't think, "karma" applies to him.

by Anonymousreply 41September 4, 2020 1:46 AM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 64September 4, 2020 2:39 AM

The story is convincing not just because it has multiple sources who agree, but because all it does is fill in some backstory to the facts that were out there the whole time: the outrageous thing he said about McCain, his refusal to go to the WWI cemetery, his whole contemptuous demeanor, etc.

by Anonymousreply 65September 4, 2020 2:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 66September 4, 2020 2:49 AM

Meh, not to me. I've said it before without the slightest exaggeration: If on 9/11 -as the towers were coming down and it was known Bin Laden had done it- the Bin Laden family came to Trump with a real estate deal and no one would find out, he'd do it without even a second's hesitation.

He attempted to do business in Cuba during the embargo, his "modeling" agency used to teach foreign girls how to skirt US immigration laws and much of his money laundered through foreign countries or he launders it for them. Make him anything but a white male and his treachery would disqualify him from even being a citizen let alone hold political office.

They should probably start working on their low-life excuses -as they always do- when it's officially confirmed.

As a native New Yorker I knew this about him before he ran for president. The fact that conservatives, patriots and military and vets would support him and stand by him depsite all him obvious distdain and lack of respect for military service and war heroes always intrigued me.

by Anonymousreply 157September 4, 2020 10:51 AM

It's fascinating to see Trumpsters claim this isn't true, because my own father, a WWII veteran, was pretty much just like this. He was so committed to owning the libs (or the 1990s Rush Limbaugh version of it) that he routinely said terrible things about veterans if it helped his far-right cause of the moment.

He benefited from the GI Bill and other veteran's benefits, yet routinely said vets at the VA hospital were leeches stealing his tax dollars. Vets made ill at Bikini Atoll were just whiners, any vet who voted Democratic was a traitorous scumbag who should be executed, etc. He was an awful man. Trumpsters today (and Tea Partiers of a few years ago) remind me of him so much, it's terrifying how many people like him actually exist.

And like a lot of others on this thread, I would bet most of those saying Trump never said such a thing actually agree with the horrible things he said.

by Anonymousreply 158September 4, 2020 11:05 AM

Jim Beaver; Actor, writer, father, Marine Vietnam vet, liberal, romantic idjit. Author of memoir Life’s That Way:

In Marine Corps boot camp, we were taught a lot of things, most surprisingly a good deal of history. Marine Corps history. The Marines are proud of their history, justifiably, and they drummed it into us. Half a century later, I recall in detail much of what I was taught.

When I pass Basilone Road on the 5 freeway midway between L.A. and San Diego, it's not just a road sign, but a memorial to Medal of Honor and Navy Cross awardee John Basilone, who died on Iwo Jima.

I know where the halls of Montezuma and the shores of Tripoli were and why Marines were there. I know the story of how the Marines got the nickname "Devil Dogs" from the Germans at a place called Belleau Wood in France.

I've been to Belleau Wood, because no self-respecting Marine with the opportunity would pass up the chance to pay tribute to the Marines who fell in one of World War I's most bloody and decisive battles. These men marched across open fields in full view of German machine gunners hidden in the woods. They spent days in hand-to-hand fighting within that tangled forest. The American cemetery there holds 2,289 graves, and one would have to have a heart of granite, or no heart at all, not to be moved in their presence. So I was disturbed at initial (and well-sourced) reports that, on a state visit to the area,

the current occupant of the White House refused to attend a scheduled memorial service at Belleau Wood because he worried that bad weather would muss his hair. Disturbed I was, but not surprised in this era where shocking behavior has become commonplace.

But today, new reports suggest that the current occupant of the White House not only could not bear to get his hair wet, but could not bear to be a respectful, decent human being.

Defense Department officials have confirmed that the man who ostensibly commands all Marines, soldiers, sailors, and air personnel referred to the American cemetery at Belleau Wood as being filled with "suckers" and "losers." I posted yesterday about this man's remarks about prisoners of war being losers and failures. I have not posted anything about his refusal to address confirmed Russian bounties paid for the killing of American troops.

I have not posted anything about his comparing his (presumably successful) avoidance of venereal disease to service in Vietnam. I have not posted anything about his denigration of a soldier's death in the middle east because that soldier happened to be Muslim.

I have not posted about his decision to exclude wounded veterans from military parades. I have not posted about his ongoing efforts to privatize for profit the Veterans Administration. I will not comment on them, but merely list them.

All I can say is that I still hold my oath to defend the Constitution against "all enemies foreign and domestic." There are no "former Marines," no "ex-Marines." I am a Marine. I stand for my comrades, my Corps, my country, and my country's constitution.

I consider the current occupant of the White House a domestic enemy, and I call upon all American veterans of every branch to repudiate him. Death before dishonor. Semper Fidelis.

I'm talking about the donors who fund the political powers that run the federal government. The people who truly have the power to remove Trump from office. Why don't they check his behavior and his presidency and keep in check for the sake of the country and our standing on the world stage?

I can't wrap my head around why they won't stop his irresponsible behavior, and give him some type of backroom talk about how to conduct himself. He just gets away with everything. If they really wanted to they could absolutely put a stop to this madness, but for whatever reason choose not to so.
I can't wrap my head around why they won't stop his irresponsible behavior....

Because the hard right of the GOP voters loves his provocative behavior and the elected officials will not do anything to anger them. They do not want to be primaried from the Right because those voters will always vote in a bloc and favor the candidate farthest to the right. Rather than fight for principles and accept the challenge of being primaried, they cave. The GOP has mistakenly identified these hard right votes as their base. In fact, they are rot and not a suitable base on which to build anything. That is starting to be clear to some of them.

Their base should be military veterans, law enforcement, soccer moms, small business people, etc. That's where they should build. But they chose to try to build on crazy. And now they are stuck with crazy.

by Anonymousreply 208September 4, 2020 4:34 PM

R206 is right, but a number of those who know how awful he is don't care, because they see him as a tool to get what they want: high-income tax cuts, right-wing judges, anti-abortion laws, anti-gay laws, or whatever. Just like they didn't see his pussy-grabbing as a threat to themselves, just a distasteful personality flaw. They don't want him in their living room, but they want him in the Executive Branch.

by Anonymousreply 209September 4, 2020 4:36 PM

You also don't need to be Freud to figure out WHY he thinks it.

Trump's father pulled strings to get him out of Vietnam and likely told him that anyone who did go was a "sucker" or a "loser" who didn't have the pull to avoid serving.

Trump just extended this to anyone who every joined the army.

(He also, as per The Atlantic, was confused as to why we joined WWI on the side of the allies)

by Anonymousreply 210September 4, 2020 4:36 PM

This is all about Trump and his insecurities. He knows he's not anything special, and he wouldn't have what he does have in life if it wasn't for his father.

Trump is a Bitch and deep down inside he knows it's true. This is about his insecurities and not being able to ever step outside of his over privileged bubble of wealth luxury comfort and convenience, which was given to him by his father. Trump has never accomplished anything on his own and he knows he's a loser. Just like the large majority of people in his administration.

Not of them got to where they are on personal merit. It was all trust funds and family money. None of these people are respectable people, not one.

by Anonymousreply 211September 4, 2020 4:38 PM

That last thing, R210, might have come through Trump's father from *his* father, the Bavarian draft-dodger Frederick Trump, who died of Spanish flu a few months before the armistice, when Fred Trump was 12. - and now is blasting him for COVID - more cops have died from COVID than on patrol this year.

by Anonymousreply 226September 4, 2020 5:10 PM

Yessss, Joe! Drag his fat, orange ass!

by Anonymousreply 227September 4, 2020 5:13 PM

R184, Trump literally just lied and said he never called McCain a loser. It's in the tweet thread at R182. So he is literally denying that. You need a new talking point, Boris.

by Anonymousreply 228September 4, 2020 5:21 PM

Trump has the personality of a serial killer. No remorse after being caught.

by Anonymousreply 229September 4, 2020 5:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 230September 4, 2020 5:45 PM

Why do the right-wingers attack this reporter after he has followed every journalism protocol in seeking multiple sources? I believe the Orangeman made these disgusting comments. He is unAmerican. Why would anyone in the military support this narcissist leader?

by Anonymousreply 231September 4, 2020 5:48 PM

Of course the story is true.

by Anonymousreply 232September 4, 2020 5:51 PM

You can't say "nobody is denying that," R184, when Trump himself *is* denying it. Just another lie on top of the thousands of others...

I'm seeing stories on Twitter about active members and veterans taking down their Trump signs. You know what? Fuck off. They stood by him while he mocked and caused serious harm to others. They can fuck right off as far as I'm concerned. Good that they're not voting for him, but they're still assholes nonetheless. No sympathy for them whatsoever especially since a great many of the Trump supporting nutcases that join the military are indeed losers.

by Anonymousreply 234September 4, 2020 5:59 PM

R231, they're just making their way through the stages of deplorable grief:

1. He didn't say it. Everyone else is lying.

2. [After indisputable evidence he did in fact say it:] He was only joking, You're so stupid for not realizing that.

3. [After Trump says he was totally serious:] Obama said it first. You didn't care when Obama said it.

4. [After indisputable evidence Obama didn't say it:] What Trump said was totally correct. He tells it like it is.

by Anonymousreply 235September 4, 2020 6:04 PM

How is anyone just realizing this now, after the Atlantic article? We've been hearing these stories for years. I guess it's just a critical mass of deplorability coming out at once, plus the fact that it's an election year and Trump's opponent is beating him in the polls. Abandon ship!

by Anonymousreply 236September 4, 2020 6:07 PM

Trump's deplorable Facebook page is awfully quiet about Trump's disdain for the military. I've been hammering away at them about what Trump said and not one of those vile idiots has disputed my posts.

by Anonymousreply 237September 4, 2020 6:10 PM

R234 That's exactly why most Americans pretend to care about military people. But the real truth is that most people really don't give a shit about service people. Most people know that elwhen they're overseas, they do a lot of immoral inhumane shit to civilians in other war torn countries.

A lot if military people are not respectable individuals in the least bit. It's just socially responsible and politically correct to act as though you care, because no one wants to deal with the fall out of not "supporting our troops." I know it sounds bad, but it's the truth. Especially with right wing assholes. They definitely don't care about them, they just use them as political pawns to help themselves politically.

The very fact that some of them still support Trump, a rich kid who disrespected John McCain, one of their own. And still stuck by him supported him and voted for Trump, is good enough reason to not care about them anyway. If they don't care, why should the rest of us care?

by Anonymousreply 238September 4, 2020 6:10 PM

Two senior Administration officials, one in the Defense Department, have confirmed that, yes, Trump made these remarks.

R236, I think part of it is the frustration that the press has done such a poor job of covering Trump and his corruption, unfitness, and horrid behavior. They couch so much coverage in both-siderism, strategic pandering to the base, and concern trolling that when a straightforward "this is what he is/does" piece like this comes along, we just jump all over it for faint resemblance of real journalism.

Ironically, Jeff Goldberg is an absolute tool and usually an example of the worst kind of political journalism. He's getting all this attention now for doing the barest minimum of his job.

Jonathan Alter: “ Why is Trump's military "suckers" and "losers" line taking root? Because it's planted in fertile soil. He has said this kind of thing so often in the past that his denials aren't landing--and no matter how vehement, they never will.”

Damn, somehow this seems worse than his usual shittiness. I know he's paid no real price for four years, but somehow this seems worse. Been wrong before, of course, like so many, but I do think he might actually pay a price for going after the military like this, in such a foul and disgusting way. Even Joe McCarthy began to finally pay a price when he decided to bring his shitshow to the US Military.

by Anonymousreply 246September 4, 2020 6:43 PM

R246 Well let's hope so. Team Trump has gotten away with everything so far, without suffering any consequences for his ill behavior.

by Anonymousreply 247September 4, 2020 6:50 PM

Let's see what the polls look like next week.

by Anonymousreply 248September 4, 2020 6:58 PM

I thought Republicans loved the military and soldiers/veterans. They're always talking about how they're superheroes and always insist on everyone respecting and saluting the troops. So how are they still supporting someone who talks about them that way?

by Anonymousreply 252September 4, 2020 7:30 PM

My worry is Trump is now scrambling on COVID, etc. to make some big announcements. The vaccine is especially worrisome because of the danger it might entail.

Shutting down the military newspaper a day after this broke was such a fucking unforced error..and a horrible look.

by Anonymousreply 253September 4, 2020 7:32 PM

Well, r247, this seems to shed a brighter light on the extent of his sociopathy. Zero Conscience, zero empathy. I guess we'll see. I can't imagine how those in the military can spin this in his favor outside of "fake news".

In 2004 when Howard Dean gave a hoarse Yeah! holler to his rally audience it was portrayed by the media to be unpresidential and unacceptable behavior by a candidate. But Trump has eviscerated any resemblance of norms of how a president would act or speak.

I agree with Howard Dean, fuck you Donald Trump, and all your whole facking family too.

Uh, let's get back to the most important disrespect of the US:

President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on the NFL to punish players who kneel on the field in protest of racial inequality and police violence.

Now, in the wake of the NFL’s new policy that all players must “stand and show respect” during the national anthem, Trump has suggested that players who kneel don’t belong in the US.

“You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing, you shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country,” Trump said in an interview with Fox & Friends that aired on Thursday.

Fox News reporters is one thing. If the prime time commentators turn on him, it would be big. Still, it will be harder for them to simply dismiss the story as fake news, not that it’s out of the question. They will probably try to ignore it.
Still, how can any one person be so self-absorbed and completing lacking in generosity?

R264, It seems to me that this type of person displays nearly all the markers of a psychopath. Because so many of us receive what little information we get regarding psychopaths and sociopaths from television and movies, we tend to think that all psychopaths are killers and torturers of innocent victims, devoid of empathy or even the slightest degree of compassion for others. This is true of many, but not all. Trump has demonstrated, at least to me, that like all psychopaths, he has no conscience at all. Sociopaths, on the other hand, generally have, however meager, some semblance of a conscience, though it often goes unheeded. There are many other features Trump has displayed which, to me, leave little doubt that he has more in common with psychopaths than sociopaths. I know that you are fully aware of the enormities of his diseased mind and the existential mayhem he is capable of inflicting on mankind.

My hope is that those who see only this ridiculous buffoon, with his laughable mangling of the English language, his astonishing level of stupidity in so many areas, and his general "can this clown be real?" demeanor will realize that this is all as nothing compared to the festering evil that [bold]IS[/bold]Donald Trump.

by Anonymousreply 295September 4, 2020 11:25 PM

Trump and NY Times don’t agree with you, R293:

President Trump lashed out on Friday at the former White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly, at a briefing with reporters, disparaging him as “unable to function” in the final months on the job after a blistering report by The Atlantic detailed Mr. Trump’s disregard for military service.

“I know John Kelly, he was with me, didn’t do a good job, had no temperament,” Mr. Trump said, calling him “exhausted and beaten up in this world.”

“Now he goes out and bad-mouths” the president, Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Kelly, a decorated veteran who lost his son, Robert, in combat, has not, in fact, bad-mouthed Mr. Trump publicly.

The Atlantic piece, which cited four unidentified sources, focused on statements by Mr. Trump that Mr. Kelly was privy to. According to the story, Mr. Trump had said he did not want to attend a memorial at a U.S. military cemetery in France because it was filled with “losers” and “suckers.”

Aside from how disgusting it is, politically it's just so crazy. It just is one of those things I'm sure no campaign manager thinks they'd ever have to explain to a candidate: by the way, don't be a huge fucking asshole about service members, okay? But of course anything remotely human has to be carefully explained to this jackass.

The Hardcore Trumpists are like the hardcore Nazis.

Even as the Russians were at the outskirts of Berlin, a sizable percentage of the German people fervently believed that Hitler would turn things around.

They are hopeless.

They are also maybe 30% of the population.

If this shifts independents to Biden, gets Democrats who never bother to vote to actually show up, and peels away even 1% or 2% of "leaning Trump" voters, it is a huge win.

Plus, rather than actually talk about Biden or his plans, Trump is going to have to spend the next week defending this.

Bingo R322

He is The Boy Who Cried Wolf

I mean that story earlier this week about how there was a planeload of "thugs" heading to Kenosha...

by Anonymousreply 327September 5, 2020 1:30 AM
This drew blood, well done Atlantic Monthly.

I'm glad they've confirmed exactly what people like me have said for years. This man who is worshiped by people who hate Hollywood elitists, will never accept that he'd prefer the company of those Hollywood elitists over any military vet, any farmer, any steel worker, any police officer.

The fact that they think Biden or Obama are "elitists," but Trump is not, shows how deranged and in denial his supporters truly are.

I'd also like to give an example of how stupid military people are when they vote Republican: Years back during Obama, the Dems put forth a vet jobs bill which passed the HoR. It failed in the Senate under McConnell. Know why? They wanted to add bellicose language against Iran. A fucking jobs bill for Vets being used to push ANOTHER Neocon war and when Dems refused, Reps voted against it.

So when you military people stupidly vote for the GOP, remember who is actually looking out for you where it counts and you ignore it to vote for whatever bullshit you tell yourself when you vote GOP.

by Anonymousreply 328September 5, 2020 1:30 AM

Hey, we resent that comparison R320.

by Anonymousreply 329September 5, 2020 1:31 AM

Again R325, the Germans believed in Hitler until he shot himself and the Russians entered Berlin and raped all their wives and daughters. Multiple times a day for months.

by Anonymousreply 330September 5, 2020 1:31 AM

It is clearly true. Trump like many rich bastards has no respect for anyone who isn’t rich.

by Anonymousreply 331September 5, 2020 1:31 AM

Multiple news outlets have confirmed the meat of this story by the writing of this post.

It is true.

And it has teeth and lasting damage.

by Anonymousreply 332September 5, 2020 1:31 AM

Even Fox fucking Noise is confirming that he said it.

by Anonymousreply 333September 5, 2020 1:33 AM

But R331 and R328 -- to his supporters, Trump does not judge them for not having gone to college, He doesn't use words they don't understand.

He is Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack and he's conned them into thinking he's one of them.

Sort of like Ivy League Bush The Younger saying "noo-cue-ler" and somehow they believed he was a Texas good old boy X 1000000000000000000

by Anonymousreply 334September 5, 2020 1:34 AM

by Anonymousreply 337September 5, 2020 1:47 AM

R324, you scared? Shit. I didn’t even think this story would amount to much as we all know Trump is a grade a shitstain, but seems like this has him rattled but good.

And I’m ignoring this poster. Time to take out the trash.

by Anonymousreply 338September 5, 2020 1:49 AM
I hope the Republicans didn't plant some fake sources for the story. It will backfire on the Democrats bigly.

by Anonymousreply 339September 5, 2020 1:51 AM

Virtually every American has either served, is serving or has a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor in the military, making this a direct insult from the individual who swore a sacred oath as Commander in Chief.

After four+ years of non-stop insanity, could this finally be Trump's 'bridge too far?' His personal 'Waterloo,' (pun intended.)

by Anonymousreply 340September 5, 2020 2:22 AM

maybe r340. I admit a lot of us feel completely disconnected from the military in our personal lives, but there is still something so ugly about denigrating men and women who actually do serve that just makes all of us cringe. it may be a throwback to a previous era, but it's still there. Even if you hate our wars, even if you don't like what we do around the world, attacking the men and women sent to actually carry out our nation's orders, yeah, that is just too damn ugly for most Americans.

And the more he tries to talk himself out of it, the worse he'll make it.

The election is two months away. Don't put too much stock in this finally being the thing that is a bridge too far for enough people to matter. He is not the only person that believes this. Except for the old military families, many look at military service as either being 1) a step for future political office (and this is rare) or 2) for people who have nowhere else to be in society so they join the military to provide direction in their lives.

Look at the comments section of any deplorable website and you will find a lot of people agreeing with Trump.

r359, he says he didn't hear Trump say it, but acknowledges that Trump could have said it when he wasn't around. Not exactly a ringing endorsement

by Anonymousreply 361September 5, 2020 3:21 AM

R359, you're too stupid to even comprehend what he even said. What you just said is NOT what he actually said.

And how fucking dumb are you that you think there isn't ample evidence of this being precisely who he is? We already fucking heard out loud how he feels about vets. BTW, he was attacking McCain's service as far back as 2000. He doesn't care about Russian bounties and it was confirmed he didn't see the point in looking for "losers" who were MIA. He shit on Gold Star families, he couldn't even retain th name of fallen soldier who died in Niger when he was speaking to his widow and even his comments to her were fucking gross. FUCK. YOU. We all know who he is, shit-for-brains.

Funny how SUDDENLY, Bolton is believable to right-wing morons. I didn't even give a shit about his book. Anyone with basic human decency knows what Trump has always been. We don't need an asshole like Bolton saying anything one way or the other.

As others have said, he’s made plenty of similar comments on the record, and there have been reports all along of him saying similar things privately, that NOTHING in The Atlantic article should be difficult for people to believe. by Anonymousreply 389September 5, 2020 10:01 AM

Remember how in ‘16, when, asked about polls showing him doing so well among uneducated people, Trump said, “I love the poorly educated” (what, btw, you’d expect a flim flam man to at least think, if not verbalize)?! You know that he thinks of these souls - the ones who cannot afford to pay someone smarter to get themselves into college - also as “losers.”

by Anonymousreply 390September 5, 2020 11:14 AM

Unlike so many of his other scandals — and there are so very many of them — this one appears to have legs. It could be because it is so easy to hear these words coming from tRump’s mouth. Or because so many news agencies rushed in with articles confirming the accuracy of the statements. Or because his denials are riddled with falsehoods — like the phone call back to Melamine in the States expressing his deep disappointment in being unable to attend the WWII commemoration — when, in fact, the Slovenian Whore was on the trip with him.

Whatever the reason, good. Take. This. Fucker. Down.

by Anonymousreply 391September 5, 2020 11:33 AM

I'm not going to respond to their comments, I'll let the facts speak for themselves, but the key word there is "denied." Trump supporters have blind faith in him, and no amount of evidence or argument will change their minds that he's always right.
Bolton says the visit was canceled because the rain complicated helicopter travel, and the drive would have taken too long. Of course this does not directly contradict Goldberg’s reporting. It is entirely possible that there were multiple reasons for the cancellation, or that weather forced the cancellation and Trump decided to justify it by dismissing the value of honoring fallen soldiers. But Bolton’s recollection does count as a point in Trump’s defense.=====On the other side, however, there are many pieces of supporting evidence. The Associated Press, New York Times, Fox News (!) and Washington Post quickly confirmed Goldberg’s reporting. The Post added several related details, in addition to Trump describing fallen soldiers as “losers.” “In one account, the president told senior advisers that he didn’t understand why the U.S. government placed such value on finding soldiers missing in action because they had performed poorly and gotten caught and deserved what they got, according to a person familiar with the discussion.”

by Anonymousreply 405September 5, 2020 12:56 PM

I remember at the time people thought the weather/helicopter excuse was just a cover because he did not want to go in the rain with his hair. The weather was not even that bad and I believe was actually sunny at the event, which all of the other leaders were somehow able to make despite the weather.

Well, the reporter at R272 was quoted as saying she could confirm *most* of the story, but not "the most salacious parts" - but still, for Fox News, that they even confirmed ANYTHING is worthy of note

Next up: pressure is building on John Kelly to speak up one way or the other; Dump, of course, launches a petty attack on him. If someone of note: Kelly...or even better, MATTIS, confirms this story on the record or even just lends credence ("yeah, he said shit like that all the time, so I'm not surprised"), shit could get interesting...

by Anonymousreply 411September 5, 2020 1:38 PM

All those other heads of state managed to get there but the US president's helicopter got tripped up by rain? What happened to making America great again?

by Anonymousreply 412September 5, 2020 1:40 PM

Kelly already stated it is not appropriate for a 4 star general to comment on this during the election. It might be my anti-Trump bias, but if he could have simply denied it he would have.

by Anonymousreply 413September 5, 2020 1:42 PM

"What happened to making America great again?"

The Republicans have decided that was too PC. They're going with "making America white and great again" for now.

by Anonymousreply 414September 5, 2020 1:44 PM

Remember: everyone thought the "grab the by the pussy" tape would be the end of Dump and it was just the beginning....

BUT: as other comments have noted, no matter how you feel about wars or the military, denigrating those who serve - and even worst, those who are killed or injured is just beyond the pale. And his words are consistent with shit he's said in the past, so it's not out of left field.

It will be interesting to see how Fox News plays this; not Chris Wallace, but those Fox & Friends dipshits. If he's lost them, he's screwed.

by Anonymousreply 415September 5, 2020 1:46 PM

Even if it's true, the myth of the Trump voter who is embarrassed to admit they are a MAGAt will have zero impact on the election.

Where and why would someone be afraid to admit they like Trump?

In a very blue state where everyone they know feels Trumpists are just Nazis once removed.

If you live in Oklahoma or Arkansas or some other major pro-Trump area, you are going to be proud to being a Trumpist.

Meaning that even if it is true, it just means Biden wins CT 60-40 instead of 65-35.

by Anonymousreply 416September 5, 2020 1:47 PM

^^proud to admit to being a Trumpist

by Anonymousreply 417September 5, 2020 1:48 PM

Trump survived the Access Hollywood tape, and other scandals in his first campaign, by not denying it. He brazened it out. He acted as if was just a joke. This time, though, he’s lying frantically, even when faced with taped evidence. He can’t pretend he’s just clowning around or that his sociopathy is “funny” because people now know how awful and incompetent he really is.

by Anonymousreply 426September 5, 2020 2:43 PM

Pence isn't saying shit. Trump is the only reason Pence has any political relevancy now. Trump rescued him as he was about to be humiliated in his own red state reelection campaign.

by Anonymousreply 427September 5, 2020 2:48 PM

Let's not forget that Trump doesn't just need the vote of Trumpkin zombies to win. They are less than 25% of Americans. Then there's another 20% or so of people who aren't that political and trend toward Trump because there is that-or-that which they're basically satisfied with.

He needs that second batch of people, the undecideds, to win. They are not going to forgive him just because he's him, like the first group will.

Also some have said jokingly that Trump is going to force his family members to join the military to cover his ass for this, but that shows a misunderstanding of Trump. When he is criticized, he doesn't kowtow -- he does the opposite. When he is criticized, he does the thing he's been criticized for TWICE AS MUCH. And that "oh yeah? Well fuck you" attitude is what his fans adore and worship.

It's sticking because his disinterest and ineptitude has lead to the deaths of almost 190,000 Americans from COVID.

We don't need for it to stick with everyone. We only need it to stick with enough people to get him the fuck out of the White House. Those who see the truth need to VOTE BLUE!

by Anonymousreply 432September 5, 2020 3:39 PM

The difference between this and the Access Hollywood tape is simple.

[Warning: Unpopular Opinion] Only a select number of people were really outraged by the grab them by the pussy tape, and those people were already probably going to vote for Hillary anyway. And this is gonna sound harsh, but the types of women that Donald Trump fools with are the grab them by the pussy types, anyway. None of that was shocking.

The US Military, for better or worse, is sacred. The military, for the most part, is something that everyone can agree on. You just can't speak against the troops, that is just the bridge too far.

Now, let's be clear, his true supporters aren't going to abandon him over this. They will fake news this or twist themselves into pretzels to ignore it or try and rationalize it. "Oh you know Trump, he was just joking."

But who this may have strong affect on is the fence sitter. The independent. The family with a dead service member. The republican who always votes for republicans, but will sit this one out this time and vote for every candidate on the ballot, except president. That's who this will hit. And that's all we really need. Inches. The whole enchilada would be nice, but a race won by inches is still a race won.

by Anonymousreply 433September 5, 2020 3:45 PM

Another reason I think this hits harder than some of his other scandals is the sheer coincidence of timing. With COVID stil a concern and violence a concern , the White House spent an entire news cycle focusing on Nancy’s hair. Even Republicans who joined in felt it was petty. And then, as that was finally playing out, one of the bigger scandals of his tenure broke and they had just drained the well of good-will.

And this is gonna sound harsh, but the types of women that Donald Trump fools with are the grab them by the pussy types, anyway. None of that was shocking.

And again, R433, of the group of outraged voters, a large percentage also assumed it was likely that Bill Clinton had, at some point, also grabbed women by the pussy and bragged about it and thus it wasn't really something she could crucify Trump about... ESPECIALLY since Trump and the Clintons had been good social friends, B&H even serving as special guests at the Trump/Slovenian Whore wedding... leading many to assume that Bill and Don may well have engaged in joint pussy-grabbing activities along the way.

No one thinks Biden ever had anything other than high compliments and strong respect for the military, his son having served, and the tragedies of his life making him quite attuned to the tragedies of military deaths.

by Anonymousreply 436September 5, 2020 4:01 PM

I don't understand why any military person thinks they are immune from Trump's disdain.

He values money, celebrity and himself. Recall when Mr. Khan asked the question of what sacrifices Trump has ever made and when George Stephanopoulos asked him that question, his answer was about his businesses/profits. He doesn't even understand what sacrifice means. He put it in his fucking will that he would cut off his kids if they joined the military or peace corps. If you do anything in your life that isn't about making tons of money, he isn't interested in you.

I mean people are forgetting another thing he said: When some general was briefing him, his response was "He's smart. Why did he join the military?" His fucking idiots supporters don't believe that one either? They think every single one of these stories is a lie? It's precisely who he fucking is. It's no shock at all. I was only shocked others were.

Daily Beast: “Trump aides, Republican operatives, and former and current friends of the president, several of them mounted a curious defense of Trump. Yes, they admitted, the commander in chief at times makes callous, tone-deaf comments about American military personnel behind closed doors. But it’s because he hates the wars they’re forced to fight, not the service members themselves.”

Said one senior administration official: “The president means no disrespect to our troops; it’s just that the way he speaks, he can sound like an asshole sometimes. That’s how he is when the cameras are off… It’s his style.”

by Anonymousreply 460September 5, 2020 5:06 PM

Ha! R460

If you've ever known a real-life Trump, the self-made owner of a family business whose kids and associates spend most of their lives apologizing for him, that is exactly the sort of mental gymnastics they get themselves into.

"He gets frustrated when deals take a long time to happen, and he just takes it out on whoever is nearest. He's called all of us "lying, conniving assholes" and threatened to beat us to death with a shovel too!"

It's sticking, alright. People are fucking mad.

This cunt didn't just slam in "the military" in a general sense. He specifically refused to set foot in Belleau Wood which is sacred ground to EVERY US Marine. He specifically attacked the Marine Corps by calling them losers and sucjerst.

Who in the actual fuck does something this goddam dumb?

Then he refused to visit the beaches at Normandy on the 75th anniversary of D-Day because he did want his rats nest to get wet?

Any other president, hell, any other American would be honored to represent and pay their respects to the men who died trying to break hitler's back in western europe. At the very least to respect General then President Eisenhower.

But this fool not only refused to go, he called all of these men, including the 191st and 82nd airborne divisions "losers".

No matter how you personally feel about our military, every boomer kid grew up watching war movies on TV. There were TV shows about WWII that boomer kids watched, probably with a parent who had served or a parent who had lost a spouse in WWII. The names of those places and those divisions are familiar to those boomer kids.

It's demoralized some of his older voters. It's demoralized his military supporters. This is a body blow to him and I doubt he recovers. These people aren't going to vote for him. They are just going to stay home in disgust.

That being said, WE still need to motivate and vote. Vote in a landslide. Vote to kick turtle in the cunt. Vote to restore respect to this country. Vote no matter what

Mary Trump does say he threatened to disinherit Don Jr. if he joined the army, but I suspect he makes that threat about a great many things.

R510 "I smell troll daily now. Russian or otherwise. Gay sites are the wrong trees to bark at stupid fucks. You're shit is no good here. Be gone."

They aren't focused on converting people to trumpism here. They're focused on sowing disenchantment with the democratic party, painting a 'both sides are equally awful' picture, encouraging skepticism/doubt about criticisms of republicans, and starting threads about divisive wedge issues to encourage in-fighting (e.g. 'cancel culture woke twitterati have gone too far again', 'protests gone wild', race-bait issues like 'cultural appropriation' and affirmative action, anything trans, etc.). Those strategies can work here to some extent.

The focus here isn't to create trump voters; the primary aim is to dampen democratic voter enthusiasm/turn-out...

One bizarre trend I've noticed lately is an over-abundance of threads started that praise the supposed 'hunkiness' of random republicans (this week alone: Ricky Schroder, Chad Wolf, Jared Kushner, Douglas Murray, probably more). I think they should really retire that strategy though. They clearly aren't quite aware of the level of pickiness among gay men, lol.

by Anonymousreply 530September 6, 2020 12:18 AM

In addition to what Ooze said, they like to create divisive "identity politics" threads (which Bannon himself admitted was his favorite strategy to employ against the Left.) Then, they can link to some thread here and claim how gays hate minorities, women, the poor, etc.

MILES TAYLOR has been recruiting fellow ex-administration officials to go on record describing TRUMP’s behavior.

“In the coming days here, I am going to have some news for you in that regard ... we will have more folks attaching their names to direct criticism of the president.”

No anonymous source needs to come forward. Forget Trump's cockroach flying monkeys. They are the equivalent of OJ defenders except I think a video would actually convince OJ defenders that he was guilty, but Trump's morons would excuse everything even with video proof. The fact that Trump has a history of calling McCain a "loser" with proof and still had the nerve to claim he never called him one, is all you need to know about the garbage he is and they are.

Normal people see who Trump is and have ample evidence of what kind of grotesque being he is, so why destroy yet another person's career by having them come forward? To whom must they prove what we all know about Trump? His garbage supporters? They aren't fit to be the shit on the bottom of Anonymous' shoes. Sources have nothing to prove to idiots who are already beneath contempt.

by Anonymousreply 533September 6, 2020 12:26 AM

The fact that Trump keeps using circumlocutions in saying he would "swear on anything" or "on whatever, whoever" makes him sound weirdly like some sort of Antichrist who's unable to utter the word "bible."

by Anonymousreply 534September 6, 2020 12:29 AM

Agree R533

Many MAGAts believe the Pussy Grabbing tape was not real, was a "deep fake" or something similar.

Trump could produce a tape and admit that he'd actually said it and they'd claim that Hillary or Pelosi had somehow secretly brainwashed him on China's orders.

R535 Troll.

by Anonymousreply 536September 6, 2020 12:39 AM
You morons bitching about 'anonymous sources' are they same fuckstains who cite doctored youtube videos, airbrushed memes and QAnon as proof that Biden has dementia, Democrats and Tom Hanks eat babies and Donald Trump is playing 3-D chess.

Yet those are the kind of things that are relegated to TMZ or Yahoo comment boards. I've never seen any one posting any of the above non critically. The anti liberal bias is mostly about trans and race issues.

by Anonymousreply 537September 6, 2020 12:43 AM

Agreed R537, but I have noticed that many DLers don't see past that, that if they see someone post a Q-Anon type thread and mock how ridiculous it is, they will call the poster a Boris and assume they are posting it with approval.

People, DLers in particular, don't read.

R530 Oh yeah... I should have mentioned that. It's a pretty curious thing to me. I would be really interested in hearing from Muriel why she found that to be the case.

I would say though that Muriel made that post a bit earlier in the year. And I think that there's reason to believe that the focuses of the disinformation trolls shifted and logically would shift a little now that we're closer to the election... I'm not casting doubt on Muriel's comments about the disinformation trolls by saying that though and the trolls can, of course, pursue multiple goals at once...

R531

Yeah, good point... Bannon, what a scumbag. He's like the greasier reincarnation of that weasel Frank Luntz.

I listen to the Tom & Lorenzo podcast and they've talked about this. They run a niche website on fashion, but they said that they started noticing a lot of posts on their message board and in their comments sections from Russian IPs. Especially when the posts are about minorities. Apparently they have the same issue that DL has regarding anything on Meghan Markle.

And on another note, I have friend who works for the local paper who says they shut down their comments sections because of a lot of interest from IPs from Russia.

I don't know who is or isn't a Russian troll, but it's clear that you don't need to be a big player for them to target your site.

by Anonymousreply 542September 6, 2020 1:52 AM

R542

They're all over the politics subforum at Lipstick Alley too. I lurk but don't post there (being a white guy and all, it's obviously not my 'space' so to speak).

They use a lot of very similar strategies there. And the black ladies' there are about as happy about it as we are here at DL.

I especially loved this time one disinformation troll referred to African Americans as "the blacks". And I was thinking, um black people don't refer to black people as "the blacks", lol. And sure enough, somebody called it out a couple posts later with a... "'The blacks'? Really? Okay, Boris."

by Anonymousreply 544September 6, 2020 2:40 AM

R540, I think a lot of people who voted for Trump probably convinced themselves that he was better than Hillary. Or that he was a moderate and wouldn't be so bad. Or that he was just that celebrity guy they knew from watching 'The Apprentice'.

He's the one who voted to send them off to die for oil.

by Anonymousreply 560September 6, 2020 3:57 AM

R560, because Biden has never spoken about military members in such a way. And his own son served.

by Anonymousreply 561September 6, 2020 3:59 AM

Yes, he did that all by his onesy, R560. Sent them all plus his favorite son, just for the oil and made himself a billionaire. Bought all those whores and houses!

Yep, sounds like Joe Biden. Damn. Now I'm not gonna vote, as after all. You've done God's work, R551/R560. God's work, buddy!

by Anonymousreply 570September 6, 2020 4:10 AM

They may not go on the record, but hopefully it erodes his support among the military enough that they fail to back him up if/when he decides to go full fascist. He really must have some sort of mental deficiency if he can't stop himself from petulantly insulting one of his key pillars of support.

Trump had ordered the Pentagon to have the Stars & Stripes shut down. Now that his hate of the military has gone public, he has reversed his order, but is trying to make it look as though tit was the Pentagon's idea to close the paper down, and that he has saved it. I'm sure that his devoted Trump supporters will believe him.

by Anonymousreply 574September 6, 2020 12:16 PM

Geez CNN's Dana Bash, your softball questions to Robert Wilkie, Secretary. of Veteran Affairs, couldn't be more accommodating. All he did was spin to anti-Obama rhetoric. Couldn't you counter that Obama has not been in office for nearly four years now? Why do you this with Trump Republicans you interview?

by Anonymousreply 575September 6, 2020 2:02 PM

R570, Biden didn’t “send” his son anywhere. He was a big boy and sent himself. He was in the Delaware National Guard and was called up and sent to Iraq.

Beau Biden was exposed for a long period to military “burn pits” where toxic chemicals were burned around the clock. There have been so many illnesses related to the unregulated burn pits that 126,000 soldiers were on a burn pit registry as of 2018. Their illnesses included rare cancers and neurological disorders.

Joe Biden has said the burn pit exposure might have led to his son‘s brain cancer. There were no formal records kept about what was burned, so we’ll never know exactly what soldiers were exposed to.

Trump is scrambling to find an effective nickname for Uncle Joe. Now he's trying out OBiden. I guess the intent is to throw in some Obama hate and scare into the ring.

But it's such weak sauce. It just looks like he missed the apostrophe in an Irish surname.

by Anonymousreply 579September 6, 2020 3:23 PM

OBiden? That’s beyond stupid. First, Obama/Biden won — twice. Barack is still very popular. Second, to try and make this into some kind of slur takes several leaps that most people just wont get.

He’s such an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 580September 6, 2020 4:24 PM

LOL, just because his psychotically loser, morbidly obese, tiny dicked self is obsessed with Obama and thinks anything Obama-related is a put down, "OBiden" is the new insult for Joe?

Hilariously low energy and pathetic!

by Anonymousreply 581September 6, 2020 4:29 PM

Hah when I heard OBiden I didn’t even think about Obama. I thought it was an Irish reference. Very stupid on Dump’s part.

by Anonymousreply 582September 6, 2020 4:57 PM

Unlike the rest of his awful mistakes, this one seems to be lingering (most are replaced by a new atrocity the next day). People are still angry. Let's hope this last through the election.

by Anonymousreply 583September 6, 2020 5:03 PM

Soooo....have either McSally or Ernst commented?

by Anonymousreply 584September 6, 2020 5:17 PM

OBiden just reminds people that Biden was VP to a popular President most Democrats (and a lot of Republicans and Independents by now) would gladly vote for again. Biden is the first one that would say he’s proud of his relationship to Obama.

That’s like calling him Obamacare and saying, if you don’t vote for me you’ll have healthcare!

by Anonymousreply 585September 6, 2020 5:21 PM

OBiden? Lol Now it is just sad flailing.

This report has done well deserved grievous harm.

by Anonymousreply 586September 6, 2020 5:52 PM

Is this foofaraw showing up the polls yet? I'm just seeing them staying steady in the last week or so, with Biden between 7 and 8 points above Trump—not a bad thing, but I'd expect it to get wider based on the outrage of the last couple of days.

by Anonymousreply 587September 6, 2020 5:53 PM

We probably have to wait until after Labor Day holiday on the polling side.

by Anonymousreply 588September 6, 2020 5:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 589September 6, 2020 5:57 PM

BAJOUR, SUCKERS!

by Anonymousreply 593September 6, 2020 6:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 594September 6, 2020 7:18 PM

R277, That one of those morons actually believes that Trump "paid for many military funerals" is proof enough of his supporters' complete insanity.

As a reader of political news and especially of Trump, I know that even as pure propaganda the Trump Administration never tried to pull off THAT risible lie!

How do I know? Because Trump never pays for anything not court-ordered!

by Anonymousreply 595September 6, 2020 7:45 PM
