Tasteful Friends: Carroll O'Connor's Mid-Century in Malibu

I say it's a perfectly preserved mid-century masterpiece, and it must be torn down. It's on 3 or 4 beachfront lots.

Is that Archie Bunker's Place?

by Anonymousreply 1September 2, 2020 10:52 PM

He also owned this house next door. It had a slight update a few years back.

Just strike a match and let it burn.

by Anonymousreply 3September 2, 2020 10:59 PM

I love it! Perfect kitchen and so many views. If I lived there I would get skin cancer from sitting outside in all those beautiful sun drenched spots. Who could resist being outside all the time at a place like this?

by Anonymousreply 4September 2, 2020 11:00 PM

It's gorgeous! Obviously, it could do with a slight update (the floors and wooden paneling are gorgeous though) and a landscaping refresh. I noticed that they haven't shown any of the bathrooms (possibly for good reason) but the kitchen is quite good - maybe some new benchtops. I could move in there tomorrow and live there for the rest of my life. What a lovely spot. I would join R4 in hospital with our skin cancer treatments from sitting outside on the deck and swimming in the ocean. Gorgeous!

by Anonymousreply 5September 2, 2020 11:06 PM

I also love it and think the bathrooms must be ghastly or else they would be seen. That's OK, I will pee and bathe in the ocean.

by Anonymousreply 6September 2, 2020 11:19 PM

The description for the 1st house mentions its "illustrious Hollywood and Rock N Roll history". What rock history is attached to this address? 30822 Broad Beach in Malibu. Did the Beach Boys live here or something?

by Anonymousreply 7September 2, 2020 11:24 PM

I love it. So much personality. Can you imagine waking up to that view?

Of course, 86 all that furniture. Probably smells like Edith’s krusty kunt.

by Anonymousreply 8September 2, 2020 11:26 PM

For $28 million, you could buy something cute in Silver Lake and a nice place in NYC and a vacation getaway in Provincetown.

by Anonymousreply 9September 2, 2020 11:38 PM

The price seems a bit steep.

by Anonymousreply 10September 2, 2020 11:42 PM

r7 I think you're right. In the description of this video it mentions the house was previously owned by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. He's a realtor, so I'll take it.

Now I don't know if I could tear down The Beach Boys' beach house...

[quote] the bathrooms must be ghastly

On another thread we discussed how only a certain type of gay man uses the word "ghastly" and how it was commonly used by women (speaking in a mid-Atlantic accent of course) in Depression-era movies to signal their upper class status.

by Anonymousreply 12September 3, 2020 12:04 AM

The house is north of the Point Dume curve so it will be more private than houses to the south

by Anonymousreply 13September 3, 2020 12:06 AM

Those were the days...

by Anonymousreply 14September 3, 2020 12:07 AM

Was the house next door for Meathead and little Gloria?

by Anonymousreply 15September 3, 2020 12:10 AM

Price is steep but it IS Malibu.

by Anonymousreply 16September 3, 2020 12:14 AM

"Edith, I gotta use the toirlet!"

by Anonymousreply 17September 3, 2020 12:17 AM

"torlet..." R17.

by Anonymousreply 18September 3, 2020 12:19 AM

I love the house, it really feels like 'living at the beach'. But this property is obviously priced for redevelopment land value, a full ocean-front acre in Malibu. This lovely 1953 home will be bulldozed without a second thought, and replaced by a 40,000 ft2 glass monstrosity by whichever LA developer buys it.

by Anonymousreply 19September 3, 2020 12:19 AM

True R19. What a pity.

by Anonymousreply 20September 3, 2020 12:19 AM

So many mid-mod homes really struggle to not look tatty.

This home could be built on any lot in America for $225,000.

by Anonymousreply 21September 3, 2020 12:20 AM

Yeah, but it’s not Archie Bunker’s pad and any old lot in America ain’t Malibu.

by Anonymousreply 22September 3, 2020 12:22 AM

R17 terlet

by Anonymousreply 23September 3, 2020 12:24 AM

Who wants to tell Archie that Mindy Kaling just moved into the old Sinatra place down the street?

by Anonymousreply 24September 3, 2020 12:26 AM

I love it, and I want it now.

Now would someone please please loan me $28 million dollars?

by Anonymousreply 25September 3, 2020 12:27 AM

Love it, although the price is obscene.

by Anonymousreply 26September 3, 2020 12:30 AM

He played a white, protestant stereotype racist antisemitic white male, as written by a Jew. And America laughed and understood. Those times are long gone. The woke expose his views now and the NYTs is all woke, all the time. I expect civil war before the year is out.

by Anonymousreply 27September 3, 2020 12:32 AM

r19 and r20 it's a shame, esp if Brian Wilson wrote any major works here (Pet Sounds, etc). If he lived here anytime after the mid-70s, then it doesn't have as much lustre.

It's a shame that California doesn't have the equivalent of the UK's National Trust, or other civic/municipal historical preservation scheme so prevalent on the East Coast (esp the Northeast). So much film and music history is now embedded around the LA area, in hundreds of properties; but there's no restriction on re-sale or re-development. No respect for heritage preservation.

by Anonymousreply 28September 3, 2020 12:35 AM

R23 finally gets it right

by Anonymousreply 29September 3, 2020 12:40 AM

I like the house next door more than this one.

by Anonymousreply 30September 3, 2020 12:55 AM

R28 I also wonder when Brian might have lived there, he had a house on Bellagio Road in Bel Air for decades; perhaps this was a weekend home?

by Anonymousreply 31September 3, 2020 12:58 AM

Hard pass, because of ongoing and significant and expensive to manage beach erosion.

by Anonymousreply 32September 3, 2020 1:34 AM

R12 add "horrid" to "ghastly." Another irritating affectation.

by Anonymousreply 33September 3, 2020 1:39 AM

A pretty undistinguished house---the wood adds little character. Nice location--that's what the price is all about./

by Anonymousreply 34September 3, 2020 1:52 AM

This first house is okay, but it's all wrong for a house on the beach. The second house R2, is beautiful

by Anonymousreply 35September 3, 2020 2:20 AM

You have the PCH right at your front door with cars whizzing by at 80mph 24/7. No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 36September 3, 2020 2:27 AM

r36, no. It's on Broad Beach Road, not PCH.

by Anonymousreply 37September 3, 2020 2:34 AM

Nah, the first house has much more character, I love it. The second one is pretty sterile. I wonder why they didn’t show the guest house? Probably dire, like I’m sure the bathrooms are, but that’s fine. The house has a great vibe

by Anonymousreply 38September 3, 2020 2:50 AM

Carroll O'Connor, wow I haven't thought of him in ages. One of those people who was once a household name and is now pretty much forgotten.

by Anonymousreply 39September 3, 2020 3:01 AM

No thanks. Despite its mid-century elements, so much of it seems stale, dusty, and outdated. I'll save the $28 million, befriend Cher, and move into her incredible Malibu compound.

by Anonymousreply 40September 3, 2020 3:25 AM

Turr-let.

by Anonymousreply 41September 3, 2020 3:33 AM

Anybody who lives right on the beach in Malibu is pretty nuts, given climate change and natural disasters etc.

by Anonymousreply 42September 3, 2020 3:37 AM

I like it. I think it's held up, style-wise, over the decades. (I'm guessing its last major renovation was in the 70s.) Alas, the land is too valuable to keep the house the same size.

Who knew Archie Bunker was a beach guy.

by Anonymousreply 43September 3, 2020 3:37 AM

What are the property taxes on something that's 28 million?

by Anonymousreply 44September 3, 2020 3:49 AM

The furnishings look photoshopped into the beach house.

I’d KILL for the brown leather, blubber rolls sofa!

by Anonymousreply 45September 3, 2020 3:59 AM

No thanks. I’ve no desire to live in Malibu and this looks super bland.

by Anonymousreply 46September 3, 2020 4:39 AM

Love it and already hate the developer who bulldozes it.

by Anonymousreply 47September 3, 2020 5:15 AM

At $6,699/ square foot, can I just buy a 10 x 10 piece for $699,000?

by Anonymousreply 48September 3, 2020 5:33 AM

R44 - Property taxes are 29,688/ month.

That’s right.... Per month.

by Anonymousreply 49September 3, 2020 5:36 AM

At $6,669 per square foot, can I buy a 10 x 10 piece for $666,900?

by Anonymousreply 50September 3, 2020 5:37 AM

R27, will someone make a comedy about the Wokes? They could even name the Woke Family. I doubt it, too dangerous. Although Fox might.

by Anonymousreply 51September 3, 2020 11:13 AM

RPT $30k a MONTH? Holy shit.
