Sometimes when my dog is asleep she cries and shakes and sort of vibrates her gums and she tries to run even though she's lying down on the bed, unconscious. Is she in distress? Is it best to wake her up and let her fall asleep again?

They could be good dreams for all you know. Maybe she's chasing bunnies and squirrels. Don't wake her.

ALL DOGS DO THAT. Leave her alone.

We're barely beginning to learn why we dream, but it seems to be a healthy and necessary function of our brains. If she's having a nightmare, who knows, she may be resolving a longstanding issue with her birth family. If she wakes up scared, reassure her that she's safe and loved.

When my dog dreams, if it seems like he's in distress I do wake him up but otherwise I leave him alone.

She's just dreaming OP. Very normal.
In her dreams she's running, jumping, rolling, swimming, barking at other dogs and birds and catching balls and sticks etc. Like others have said - if she wakes up distressed then give her loads of TLC.
