She was stupid and waited 15 years to release another album after her 2002 album Up. Unless you’re Barbra Streisand, you cannot take a 15 year break from making music and expect to still be relevant when you decide to return. A new generation will have taken your spot (in her case, Taylor Swift stole her country-pop schtick). When she finally released a new album, it flopped because she was forgotten by that point and the album sucked. She was lucky to have the success she did in the late 90’s/early 2000’s.

The real question is how she had a successful career to begin with. She had an off putting and nasally voice and very forgettable songs. Isn't she a right winger now ?

Because the guy who was the mastermind behind her signature sound left her for her best friend, because she's not young and hot anymore, because it's not the 90s. Times change. I'm sure she made more money than God, can't really complain. Was fun while it lasted.

Her ex-husband really was the mastermind behind her hits because her most recent album was her first album without him producing and writing and it was awful. And she worked with four different producers and even they couldn’t get her a hit.

She said she lost her voice as a complication from Lyme Disease which she got in 2003. Then she had all the drama with her messy divorce (from the Svengali who wrote and produced most of her music to begin with). I'm surprised she came back to music at all, she should've been set for life off of her 90's/early 2000's success.

She's still big enough to do a Vegas show and an arena tour a few years back though, so I wouldn't say her career is totally dead, she's just aged into being a nostalgia act.

She is more of a pop star than a country music star honestly. A lot of her success relied on her sex appeal. She looked amazing in her music videos and had some fun approachability to her character as well. Like others said she waited too long to release albums and her husband was the mastermind who manufactured a lot of her image and sound. Then other sexy country pop stars came and went like Jessie James and Carrie Underwood and filled her niche. Shania is very still popular and nostalgia for the late 90s and 2000s is reviving interest in her career.
