Tasteful Friends - Lauren Santo Domingo’s Southampton Retreat
“We loved this cozy little farmhouse,” says Lauren, “but the town wouldn’t let us make any additions to it.” Fortuitously, the adjoining property was also available, and by uniting the lots, Lauren felt that they could achieve the suggestion of a series of farm buildings and garden rooms that could be used for the couple’s legendary outdoor entertaining.
There would be no dining room—“I always think if you really want to ruin a party, all you have to ask is, ‘Shall we move to the dining room?’ ” she says, laughing. Now the plane-tree allée that leads to the pool, for instance, seats 40, and a dozen can fit at the table under the grape arbor. If it rains, the party can move into the sunporch, its wicker furniture inspired by Marella Agnelli and its rattan shades made by the fabled Lilou Marquand, a longtime associate of Coco Chanel. The gardens, meanwhile, would need to be at their most sumptuous in August, when the peripatetic family (they have homes in New York, Paris, and Andrés’s native Colombia) would spend the most time there.

More photos... many of them not featured in the VOGUE piece.

Lauren liked one of my tweets. That is my claim to fame on twitter.

Was it political R2? She’s very active in the Democratic Party from what I’ve heard.

Who wrote the purple prose copy? I threw up in my mouth reading that. A lot.

R6 Hamish Bowles, the Vogue editor. It’s par for the course for a Vogue piece.
But nobody gives a shit about him or his writing. What do we think about the house?

Yeah r3. It was after Charlottesville and a reporter was asking where Ivanka and Jared were since they always disappear when shit hits the fan. I made a black joke about Nazis murder and hand bags. That seems like a LIFETIME ago.

It’s a beautifully decorated house and really sophisticated when you read about some of the individual pieces. I love it.
But wall to wall carpeting in her combination “dressing room bathroom”? That seems very impractical.

It's alright. The grounds are nice. Who is this rich bitch and what did she do to earn this?
Loving the posed mother-child photos making her look like a model. LOL! This is akin to cosplay.

I like it. It’s colorful and cozy. The foliage and outdoor dining table looks like it’s ready for a mosquito invasion.

I’m surrounded by these people. I take the back roads & drive out of here as often as possible until after Labor Day. It’s a crime that these spoiled idiots have so much money they either inherited or used insider trading & larceny to get. Because they’re not smart. You’d think amassing all this money would take brains. It doesn’t.

The inside decor doesn't go with outside and location. It's a beautiful property, I would have preferred something a little more simple.

I remember when she was just stoner rich girl Lauren Davis hanging out in greenwich. A lot less exotic without the latino last name.

"“I remember walking around a friend’s property, and I said, ‘Oh, Miranda, what is this? It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.’ And she’s like, ‘Lauren, it’s a pansy,’ ” she says, laughing. “I had these visions of coming here, à la Bunny Mellon, with my cutting shears and my sun hat and doing the gardening. My first day out I got heatstroke, and that was it. I had all the outfits, but I don’t have the patience!”

Yeah, she grew up wealthy, but not crazy rich, in Greenwich as Lauren Davis and her dad was the North American CEO for Perrier Group. After college she lived in Paris for a while and met Andres Santo Domingo whose Colombian family has a net worth in the neighborhood of $8 billion, derived primarily from a South American brewery business that’s the second-largest beer company in the world behind Anheuser-Busch.
When they got married in 2008 she won the lottery and became Lauren Santo Domingo. I guess you could say she’s the “beer queen”. LOL
Still, by most accounts, she’s no dummy and has made Moda Operandi into a business that successfully competes with Net-a-Porter and she’s active in politics and environmental conservation as well as clothes and parties.
If DL is going to hate on someone then look to Aerin Lauder, now there’s a vapid lady!

^^ completely agree.
Aerin has butterface, is a republican, and has never been hip.
LSD (love her initials) has always been the “cool socialite” and hangs with old school icons like Deeda Blair & Lynn Wyatt who serve as her mentors.

Right now “ugly is chic” for interior design; as seen in hotels like the Freehand, Ace, etc.

The sofa? Which sofa? The Gloria Vanderbilt patchwork copy or the yellow slipcovered one? That yellow is fine for a summer slipcover. Or that wicker sofa?

The house is nice, nothing extraordinary but with nice gardens. The interior though I genuinely dislike. All those girly textiles and small scale things, and evidently she can only think in terms of little underscaled vignettes, a cluster of objects on a table, a mantel, in a corner...but static: no interaction to the surrounding space, no connection to the other vignettes, no relationship to the ill-conceived voids in between.
Some individual things are genuinely good and interesting and if you showed me a few u would be mistaken in thinking they were from an interesting house of a person with some knowledge and taste. But no, mostly it's misinterpreted references, horrible taste in textiles (explosion at the Desigual warehouse?), and a really piss poor sense of space itself. It's an expensive restaurant that has served you a plate composed on disparate and far-placed sprigs of garnishes and violets and candied crumbs of ginger dusted with an unusual sweet smoked paprika and maybe a dime size dollop of moldy jam--not meat,. no protein, no vegetables, no bread, just a few too pretty garnishes. Bon appetit.

If I could afford it, a large Calder tapestry would prominently hang in my living room.

[R24], I hope you utilize your talent for description well. The words have their own completeness and flow, unlike others I have seen. If you just copied and pasted something by someone else, let avarice rock on!

Thanks, R27. All mine I'm afraid. Had I copied and pasted I would have taken the time to correct the faults—my own stuff, I'm obviously lax about.
It's a shame things don't come together better. Look at that fireplace in R26's image, with the crazy, not quite right Gibbs surrounds, and the Calder tapestry and gouaches, and the beautiful detail of the Dutch door, but then the rest is a mess. I didn't read carefully before and missed that it's a Gil Schaefer house, and one that's too collaborative for me. Obviously the client is pleased as punch with with herself and her every utterance(!) It is very good in details but a lot of the spaces don't have the mark of an architect's ordering of space and hierarchies; there's no clear sense of space it's just a bunch of ideas jostling for expression in different rooms. (At the link is a house by the same architect, a very modest house by his standards but straight away you get a sense of order and sequence and the expression of a complete idea that was a missed opportunity in LSD's place.)

Sorry but no air conditioning at all? In the Hamptons? Half the summer there is in the 80's with 80% humidity - and those are the nice days.
No, thank you.

It's pretty but it's also too art-directed, too "done" and too symmetrical.

Also what the hell is "wicker furniture inspired by Marella Agnelli".
I might be intrigued by a dildo collection "inspired by Gianni Agnelli"
