UMass Boston. I have many good memories of the classes and professors. The course load could be demanding if you were looking for an education rather than just a diploma. Not the best looking school (1960s Brutalist architecture), garishly painted in sections, and it was hard to make friends because students would come and go. I'm truly proud of having graduated summa cum laude from UMB.

The so-called "Seinfeld Diner" on 112th is really called "Tom's Restaurant" in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | September 2, 2020 7:47 PM |
And actually it was that Tom's Restaurant at 112th near Columbia University that was the inspiration for Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner", r140.
It, and not anything in Brooklyn, was the act inspiration for Suzanne Vega's song (she went there often when a student at Barnard):
[quote] The "Tom's Diner" of the song is Tom's Restaurant in New York City,[3][4] a mid-20th-century diner on the corner of Broadway and 112th Street. Singer and songwriter Suzanne Vega was reputedly a frequent patron during the early 1980s when she was a student at nearby Barnard College.[5] The diner later became famous as the location used for the exterior scenes of Monk's Café in the popular 1990s television sitcom Seinfeld.[5]

R138 Bank St. College was a leader in progressive education in the1930s and part of that was having an in-house laboratory school, which has child development at the core of its teaching philosophy. To this day they have a family center for toddlers to school aged children and then a school going up to eighth grade. But it’s nothing like a prep school, more for lefty non traditional type families, but not like the school in Mame, that’s more Waldorf.
