Non coffee-drinkers

Are you out there? Sometimes I feel so alone... and ridiculed.

by Anonymousreply 105September 4, 2020 2:47 AM

You should convert to Mormonism.

by Anonymousreply 1September 1, 2020 6:22 PM

I cannot take them seriously.

by Anonymousreply 2September 1, 2020 6:23 PM

I *wish* I could be a non-coffee-drinker. Seriously. It's a ball and chain. I spend quite a bit, per month, on coffee, half 'n' half, sugar, etc.

by Anonymousreply 3September 1, 2020 6:24 PM

Hate coffee. The smell, the taste, the look. EVERYTHING.

by Anonymousreply 4September 1, 2020 6:26 PM

OP worse than Hitler.

by Anonymousreply 5September 1, 2020 6:26 PM

I'll admit that I love the smell of fresh coffee, and coffee beans, but the taste? Nothing worse...

by Anonymousreply 6September 1, 2020 6:28 PM

I am an American tea drinker.

by Anonymousreply 7September 1, 2020 6:29 PM

Oof, tea is even worse than coffee.

by Anonymousreply 8September 1, 2020 6:31 PM

OP, I have never drank a cup of coffee in my life... I'm exclusively a tea drinker since I was a kid. I can't stand the smell of coffee brewing...

by Anonymousreply 9September 1, 2020 6:32 PM

I've always been a picky drinker. Didn't like Coke (and most carbonated drinks), milk, coffee ... pretty much anything. Once Diet Coke was introduced, I became a fanatic. And finally, when I turned 60, I decided to start drinking coffee. So you never know, OP -- your tastes change as you age.

by Anonymousreply 10September 1, 2020 6:33 PM

[quote]OP, I have never drank a cup of coffee in my life

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 11September 1, 2020 6:33 PM

Gave it up several years ago because it affected my sleep so much. Switched to black tea, and then a few years ago to green tea. I loved coffee, but I feel so much better without it and don't miss it at all. It used to be annoying in coffee-cake-and-cake social situations, but now I only hang out with non-coffee people so it's easy.

by Anonymousreply 12September 1, 2020 6:33 PM

I'm not a huge fan of coffee. Instant stuff gives me diarrhoea. And the espresso machine stuff feels like a line of coke along with the anxiety and heart palpitations (if I have more than two double espressos.

I like iced tea. I've taken to making my own, it's simple enough.

by Anonymousreply 13September 1, 2020 6:37 PM

Love the smell. Like the taste. Stopped drinking coffee many years ago because I don't want a caffeine addiction that also gives me headaches.

by Anonymousreply 14September 1, 2020 6:43 PM

I can’t have it because of my acid reflux :(

by Anonymousreply 15September 1, 2020 6:45 PM

I don't drink coffee. I can't stand the smell of regular coffee. The flavored coffees smell good, but I don't see any reason to start drinking coffee now.

My weakness is carbonated drinks. I try to wean myself off them, but when stress hits, I need a Coke.

by Anonymousreply 16September 1, 2020 6:45 PM

I hate it. My parents used to drink it all the time and I skipped Sunday school once after church and went into the little lobby where they had a coffee pot for the adults. I poured myself a cup, thinking I'd be so mature. Even added some cream and sugar, knowing I probably wouldn't like the taste of coffee by itself and I still hated it. When I think about how much money everyone wastes on Starbucks every year, I count my blessings.

I also had a roommate in college who always brewed coffee before I woke up every day and the entire room would stink with it. It's not that it's an entirely unpleasant smell in general, but he was an asshole so I always associate the smell with him and want to gag.

by Anonymousreply 17September 1, 2020 6:52 PM

I love it! My morning cup is the best part of my day! And I love the smell!

by Anonymousreply 18September 1, 2020 7:06 PM

It was my routine for 25 years to wake up and then have 2 cups of coffee.

About 3 months ago, I suddenly stopped. I just didn't want it anymore. No withdrawals or anything. Very strange.

I'm now addicted to peppermint tea. I drink one cup in the morn' then drink it throughout the day at work.

Bow to me bitches.

by Anonymousreply 19September 1, 2020 7:11 PM

During the times I was able to quit coffee, my skin was beautiful. I wish I could kick this addiction. Alas, it's my final addiction aside from occasional junk food binges.

by Anonymousreply 20September 1, 2020 7:15 PM

Why do you feel ridiculed? Do people make fun of you for it? Who would even do that?

by Anonymousreply 21September 1, 2020 7:19 PM

r21, some do actually. They think it's silly how an adult does not drink coffee. Don't ask me why, I don't get it.

by Anonymousreply 22September 1, 2020 7:25 PM

I took up coffee in my 20s when I was a heavy drinker.

Gave up alcohol almost 10 years ago, but still drink coffee every morning. One of my great joys of my life.

by Anonymousreply 23September 1, 2020 7:27 PM

Eh, I don't have a lot of other vices. Don't smoke and not a heavy drinker. I'm fine with the coffee addiction. I just make sure to also drink lots of water. I also usually take it black and usually make it myself. Never buy overpriced Starbucks drinks.

Life is crappy enough without morning coffee.

by Anonymousreply 24September 1, 2020 7:28 PM

I love the smell of coffee and a the taste of a good strong dark roast, but my GERD doesn't like it. I have to have only 1 small Keurig cup, or less per day. If my GERD is acting up I can't have it at all. I often drink plain iced tea or Diet Coke in the morning if I can't have coffee. I don't get headaches without it since I'm not a major caffeine consumer.

by Anonymousreply 25September 1, 2020 7:31 PM

Nothing wrong with not liking something. That being said, I wonder about people who like chocolate but hate coffee - compared with the same amount of sugar/dairy, the flavor profiles are very very close.

by Anonymousreply 26September 1, 2020 7:31 PM

Never ever trust a non coffee drinker.

by Anonymousreply 27September 1, 2020 7:31 PM

Hate coffee, and tea too. Love a hot chocolate though. It’s weird because I was a barista for a few years and everyone said I made an amazing cup despite the fact I never touch the stuff myself.

by Anonymousreply 28September 1, 2020 7:35 PM

I'm trying to cut down on coffee and drink hot water & lemon in the morning.

by Anonymousreply 29September 1, 2020 7:36 PM

I also have never had a cup of coffee in my life. I hate the taste. Don't like it even when it is tarted up with flavorings. Can't stand the taste in anything else either like desserts. I come from a family where everyone drinks it. The smell of it brewing is nice but, God, what an awful taste.

I love tea though and drink it non-stop. Iced all year round but also do hot tea in fall through spring. Black only, though. I know green tea is good for you, but it tastes awful as well.

by Anonymousreply 30September 1, 2020 7:37 PM

Coffee and alcohol are communal things. I used to drink, but would only drink around people I knew well & trusted. And only when I absolutely did not have to drive. I ended up not drinking very much, socially. The non-drinking did seem to affect my social life. In retrospect, who the fuck cares about people who can only socialize while drunk or buzzed.

by Anonymousreply 31September 1, 2020 7:39 PM

[quote] The smell of it brewing is nice.

I agree. It's like bacon. I love the smell of it frying in a pan but don't want to eat the greasy stuff.

by Anonymousreply 32September 1, 2020 7:40 PM

I am not a coffee drinker. I never much liked the taste. I prefer tea.

by Anonymousreply 33September 1, 2020 7:41 PM

I like hot coffee but not iced coffee. I like iced tea but not hot tea. So I have something to drink for every season.

by Anonymousreply 34September 1, 2020 7:43 PM

I was a tea drinker til my late 40s. I'm 55. I drank a lot of Diet Coke and wanted to give up aspertame. I started drinking iced coffee. At first I could only drink a tiny bit but now I drink a couple a day and love it. I make it myself and keep a pitcher in the fridge Coming from being a devoted tea drinker I couldn't believe the jolt energy coffee gives. I still don't love hot coffee.

by Anonymousreply 35September 1, 2020 7:48 PM

Yes, R24, you reminded me to drink more water. It really does help & I get lazy about drinking water.

by Anonymousreply 36September 1, 2020 7:50 PM

I love the smell and the taste of coffee, but only if it has a ton of sugar and cream in it. I mean, at least a quarter of the liquid has to be cream and perhaps two tablespoons plus of sugar. Once I realized that the amount of the calories I added to the coffee was the equivalent of a chocolate bar or a milkshake, I quit drinking coffee.

Now all I drink is water, skim milk, and V8.

by Anonymousreply 37September 1, 2020 7:50 PM

I love the smell of brewing coffee, but I don't drink it. Perhaps 3 cups a year. I always thought the day would arrive when I simply couldn't function without it - but that day hasn't ever come. However, some say it has health and cognitive benefits. I'm a light sleeper, so I would have to have it in the morning only if I did drink it. I do like tea, but usually drink decaffeinated.

by Anonymousreply 38September 1, 2020 7:57 PM

Caffeine has deleterious effects on me - inability to sleep, heart palpitations including PVCs, hands shaking, etc. So although I love the smell and taste of coffee, I had to give it up years ago. I drink hot decaffeinated tea now.

by Anonymousreply 39September 1, 2020 8:03 PM

I have never had a cup of coffee in my life. Back in the day, I used to get shit from the people I vacation with for needing to stop to smoke every once in a while. Luckily, I quit smoking five years ago, but they all still drink coffee... and now nothing annoys me more than having to sit around and wait while they all stand in an interminable Starbucks line every day.

I guess it's karma.

by Anonymousreply 40September 1, 2020 8:08 PM

68 years old and have never had a cup of coffee.

My caffeine intake is from lots of Diet Coke.

Just for the record, I also have never smoked weed or bottomed.

by Anonymousreply 41September 1, 2020 8:14 PM

Coffee drinkers are the worst. You just know they enjoy foreskins and analingus and they are all smokers, or ex-smokers. They eat French food, and transmit venereal disease, sitting around talking about boxing and Karl Marx. Vile pigs, should be shot.

by Anonymousreply 42September 1, 2020 8:14 PM

Well, I do like foreskins and ass and Karl Marx.

by Anonymousreply 43September 1, 2020 8:17 PM

r41 are you my missing twin? I'm going to be 68 next week, have never bottomed, and am addicted to Diet Coke as well.

by Anonymousreply 44September 1, 2020 8:17 PM

Coffee breath is unattractive.

by Anonymousreply 45September 1, 2020 8:17 PM

Real men love a cup o' Joe.

The rest are pantywaists.

by Anonymousreply 46September 1, 2020 8:17 PM

I used to make myself a cup of coffee or mocha for breakfast when I was going out to work and needed to hype myself up in preparation for entering the arena, but now that I'm home I don't need that much caffeine. When I was still going out to restaurants I'd order coffee if I was having breakfast. I never get Starbucks. I think their coffee's disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 47September 1, 2020 8:19 PM

Starbucks is not my favorite, I buy from a good coffee distributor. But I like it and keep some on hand. I buy their Veranda Blend, which they label a blonde roast. It's pretty mild. It's got less of a burnt taste, although I've grown to like that taste as a change of pace. I don't understand people who put sugar in coffee. That disgusts me. Coffee should be somewhat bitter. But half and half is a requirement. Tea, which I also drink strong, should have sugar (or Splenda) and half and half. My grandfather used to make fun of his father's accent and speech "I've got to 'ave me 'arf and 'arf" so it goes back at least four generations in my family.

by Anonymousreply 48September 1, 2020 8:30 PM

I love coffee but have never seen the appeal of tea. Even when I lived in China, I couldn't get into tea.

by Anonymousreply 49September 1, 2020 8:33 PM

I like McDonald's coffee. I have one cup in the morning, with two creams, and I'm good for the day. Never had Starbucks.

by Anonymousreply 50September 1, 2020 8:54 PM

Only place I ever got into tea was when I worked in Japan. The break room had these tall pots of very hot water and mesh strainers. For a short period, I got interested in loose green tea. At the time, I had not started on my coffee habit, so, I think the caffeine content (in the green tea) was significant (addictive) for me.

by Anonymousreply 51September 1, 2020 9:04 PM

I spend a fortune on green teas. It's rather silly but I know and appreciate many varieties now. I have a thermostat kettle to heat the water correctly. This is important, and many green teas are brewed low - 75C for example. I don't like stale tea. I can enjoy cheap tea if it's fresh. For coffee, I like all kinds. No need for it to be gourmet but of course I love perfectly prepared coffee. But I like some rough roasts - included arabicas.

by Anonymousreply 52September 1, 2020 9:10 PM

I have never drank coffee but I did love the smell of it brewing at one time, then all of a sudden the smell of coffee brewing at work started to smell like skunk to me. Considering about half the coffee drinkers posting in here either wish they could stop or cut back, I sure don't feel like I am missing anything by never taking it up and yes OP I too have had contemporaries ridicule me for not being a coffee drinker.

by Anonymousreply 53September 1, 2020 9:16 PM

I really don't understand how people live without coffee and tea. Like I'd go crazy if I didn't have either to drink.

by Anonymousreply 54September 1, 2020 10:48 PM

That's your addiction talking, R54.

by Anonymousreply 55September 1, 2020 10:51 PM

I drank a ton of coffee in my youth. But now that I'm in my 50's I drink Green tea and herbal teas. Rarely if every drink coffee and don't like the taste. I particularly hate Starbucks. I don't know what I was expecting but it is gross.

by Anonymousreply 56September 1, 2020 10:53 PM

R56 Starbucks coffee is absolutely disgusting. It should have an octane rating.

I'm the opposite. I actually loathed coffee until I hit 40 (I'm 47 now) and I loved it. I think it's due to taste bud changes. As you get older your palette changes.

by Anonymousreply 57September 1, 2020 10:55 PM

r55 Id rather be addicted to coffee than meth!

by Anonymousreply 58September 1, 2020 10:58 PM

[quote]Non coffee-drinkers...

...should NOT be on the Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 59September 1, 2020 10:59 PM

Hot broth for me.

by Anonymousreply 60September 1, 2020 11:15 PM

There are people who are absolutely addicted to coffee, will drink a dozen cups a day. Is the the caffeine they're addicted to? Or is the taste of coffee addicting? I never understood it. I think people with addictive personalities ARE prone to be coffee drinkers. My mother's second husband was an alcoholic; he drank at least a six pack of beer or two a day, smoked continually and drank coffee like water. A totally addictive personality. He died in his early forties.

by Anonymousreply 61September 1, 2020 11:18 PM

r61 when I was growing up, we had a neighbor who was manic depressive. When manic, he would drink coffee around the clock.

by Anonymousreply 62September 2, 2020 12:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 66September 2, 2020 12:45 AM

Drank a lot of coffee until I was about 36 or so....then just gave it up cold. Will drink tea (iced and hot). Love a good hot chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 67September 2, 2020 12:46 AM

5 years sober OP. Sleep is so much better. And so is my bank account. I do miss those epic shits though.

by Anonymousreply 68September 2, 2020 12:50 AM

r68 I only drink coffee in the two-hour window after I wake up (so usually between 4:30-6:30) and I don't touch it the rest of the day. I haven't noticed my sleep affected.

by Anonymousreply 69September 2, 2020 8:42 AM

R23 R31 Coffee can reverse a very small portion of damage alcohol does to your liver. Oatmeal does the same thing.

by Anonymousreply 70September 2, 2020 10:12 AM

R61, Why did your mother marry him?

by Anonymousreply 71September 2, 2020 11:38 AM

In my 20's I drank coffee regularly at work, but I'm 44 now and it gives me the shakes. Also, I hate cleaning out my coffee maker. The only caffeine I consume these days is cold brewed, unsweetened iced tea - Luzianne brand. I just make a pitcher of it every other day or so.

by Anonymousreply 72September 2, 2020 12:19 PM

Hot is the Devil's temperature!

by Anonymousreply 73September 2, 2020 12:20 PM

Don't feel too bad, a lot of people don't like coffee...

Then they grow up.

by Anonymousreply 74September 2, 2020 3:49 PM

Who ridicules people for not drinking coffee? I've been a tea drinker my whole adult life and never been criticized for it. I love the smell of coffee brewing, and can appreciate the taste (especially Turkish coffee and espressos), but the breath that it gives you after....I remember vividly as a kid the coffee and cigarettes breath of many adults, blech. I love traveling in Asia, as they all have electric water kettles and tea as the dominant choices in hotels.

Coffee gives me the sweats and shakes, which is no good for a makeup artist. However, when it's been hour 16 on an 18 hour work day, it'll help me drive home awake.

by Anonymousreply 75September 2, 2020 3:56 PM

The stink of coffee is only slightly down the scale from hydrogen sulfide

by Anonymousreply 76September 2, 2020 4:14 PM

Love the smell of brewing coffee but can't stand the taste, Been addicted to Coke for 50+ years.

by Anonymousreply 77September 2, 2020 4:18 PM

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I enjoy the smell and like coffee ice cream (and a very rare ice blended, sugary coffee drink). I hardly ever drink alcohol (not a fan) and can take or leave sodas/soft drinks. I mostly just drink water.

by Anonymousreply 78September 2, 2020 4:55 PM

I'm the same R78. Don't drink. Don't like it. But love the smell of it.

by Anonymousreply 79September 2, 2020 4:58 PM

"Why did your mother marry him?"

She was in love with him. She was scum, and she was in love with him. I've never been able to figure that out.

by Anonymousreply 80September 2, 2020 8:37 PM

I have to detox from coffee every few months. It starts to taste terrible to me. Then, after a week of mate (Celestial Seasonings Morning Thunder) I crave that morning cup. And coffee with dessert, only it would keep me up all night.

by Anonymousreply 81September 2, 2020 8:47 PM

Sweet tea is amazing.

by Anonymousreply 82September 2, 2020 8:47 PM

Non coffee drinkers?

An abomination.

by Anonymousreply 83September 2, 2020 8:55 PM

Sweet Tea is an abomination.

by Anonymousreply 84September 2, 2020 10:37 PM

I love coffee. Will drink about 3 cups a day. The taste is divine. The Starbucks Verona blend is the best. I don't go to starbucks that often, maybe twice a year now. I make it at home in a percolator.

And yes, I think adults who don't drink it are weird. But I also think beer and most alcohol is disgusting so go figure.

by Anonymousreply 85September 2, 2020 11:25 PM

I also think soda is disgusting. Liquid sugar. No one should be drinking that shit. It's vile.

by Anonymousreply 86September 2, 2020 11:26 PM

^^^ I never drink soda with sugar. I drink the carbonated chemical concoction version.

by Anonymousreply 87September 2, 2020 11:28 PM

I agree with you r85, beer is so...yeasty.

by Anonymousreply 88September 3, 2020 12:58 AM

I can't stand those "Don't talk to me until I've had my morning coffee!!!" people. Change your shitty processed food diet then you won't be tired and need coffee.

by Anonymousreply 89September 3, 2020 1:21 AM

I don't drink coffee, OP. It's just never been my thing. I've always felt weird too. I would prefer a tea or a hot chocolate. Just have never really liked the taste of it.

by Anonymousreply 90September 3, 2020 1:24 AM

I have never drank coffee but I would slap the shit out of someone trying to get me to say I have never drunk coffee.

by Anonymousreply 91September 3, 2020 1:52 AM

TL:DR post —— Coffee, Coke and anything with caffeine makes me look like a drug addiction. I break out in sweats and start having the shakes. When Starbucks first came out, I’d go with friends and order regular old coffee the caffeine would hit me hard. I’m 57 and can’t even drink Coke because how the caffeine wrecks my body. Yep, totally boring post.

by Anonymousreply 92September 3, 2020 6:29 AM

[quote]Hate coffee. The smell, the taste, the look. EVERYTHING.

Ditto. I think most people drink coffee because of social pressure, to make them look like an adult, and certainly not because it tastes any good. That's why you have so many flavorings, to try to hide the horrid taste.

by Anonymousreply 93September 3, 2020 6:33 AM

Another non coffee drinker here. The smell of fresh brewed coffee is nice but the taste is awful. I can't even stand coffee ice cream or tiramisu. I like fresh brewed iced tea (unsweet) but hot tea doesn't do much for me unless I have a sore throat. I've always been a soda drinker but I've recently given that up.

by Anonymousreply 94September 3, 2020 7:32 AM

Don't mind non-coffee drinkers

HATE decaf coffee drinkers.

by Anonymousreply 95September 3, 2020 7:42 AM

I agree with R94 - I love the smell of coffee but hate the taste and "consistency" (too thick and too bitter). I don't love sugar so adding the amount needed to balance out the flavor is just not appealing. Coffee also seems to be an instant heartburn culprit (and honestly I don't have GERD or heartburn with anything else other than cucumbers). Coffee flavored desserts are fine (the sugar added I suppose), but I am not a huge dessert fan either. When I crave rich/calorie-heavy food - it is always salty as a rule. I love iced tea (unsweetened) and I drink plenty of hot tea with either milk or lemon. I have never liked sodas (even as a child), but drink a ton of seltzer water. Yes, non-drinkers are definitely singled out as a rule, but there are worse things to be LOL.

by Anonymousreply 96September 3, 2020 7:43 AM

I find the unsweetened tea thing really odd...especially iced. To me the sugar brings out the flavor. Unsweetened tea, to me, would be next to water and not worth the effort to brew. Worse than water actually because it’s slightly bitter.

I’ve had Japanese tea varieties and found them extremely bland. But people claim they’re “so flavorful.”

Same with people who dilute juices and soup. It becomes very watery with no flavor.

Seltzer tastes yucky to me. The quality of the water or the carbonization adds a bitter flavor. Sometimes a certain variety made from spring water (usually Italian) will be OK, but the generic ones are almost chemical tasting to me.

by Anonymousreply 97September 3, 2020 11:11 AM

I really dont know how people go through life without tea. So many health benefits, its like drinking liquid medicine. The Chinese may do other crazy shit, but they got it right with tea.

by Anonymousreply 98September 3, 2020 3:38 PM

I grew up thinking the only kind of coffee was “black” which I didn’t like. In my 30s, a friend worked at a coffee shop said, I know something you’d like and fixed me the equivalent of a mocha Frappuccino. YUM! But I don’t consider that coffee, more like dessert.

by Anonymousreply 99September 3, 2020 4:06 PM

I only like latte with caramel, or iced coffe, like iced mocca.

by Anonymousreply 100September 3, 2020 4:11 PM

I don't dislike coffee, but for some reason it causes severe symptoms of depression whenever I drink it that lasts for several hours. We're talking sitting in the closet or lying in bed, staring into space, listening to So Tonight That I Might See, only getting up to pee, type of depression.

I don't know why this happens, and I drink lots of tea without issue, and even Mountain Dew doesn't cause the problem, so I don't think it's the caffeine.

As a result, I don't drink coffee.

by Anonymousreply 101September 3, 2020 4:16 PM

I've started drinking some of the fruit-flavored waters (both sparkling and still). They're not bad and can be refreshing unless you're really craving something sweet.

by Anonymousreply 102September 3, 2020 5:04 PM

[quote] I don't dislike coffee, but for some reason it causes severe symptoms of depression whenever I drink it that lasts for several hours.

I'm the opposite. Coffee actually helps me with depression / low mood. I've gone through periods of no coffee. Once, during a no coffee period, I could not get motivated in the mornings and felt depressed. I had no coffee on hand, so I went to Starbucks and got some coffee. It was like a light came on and I felt instantly better.

by Anonymousreply 103September 3, 2020 6:49 PM

Just have some wine instead

by Anonymousreply 104September 3, 2020 7:13 PM

I LOVE and am addicted to iced coffee (I get a throbbing headache if I don’t drink any by around 1pm). I prefer it with skim milk (or a dash of whole milk or cream) and artificial sweetener (I like Sweet n Low). I started drinking it (as a substitute for dessert) when I was 19 and on a strict diet.

I don’t like hot coffee or hot beverages in general unless the weather is subzero, in which case I wait for the drink to cool down to “warm”.

I prefer iced tea unsweetened.

I hate coke/Pepsi, and only tolerate carbonated beverages if they’re mixed with something uncarbonated.
