Helena Bonham Carter plays the same character in everything she does. It's so played out at this point.

Margaret was beautiful when young, she was erratic, boozey, bitchy, tragic, yes she was increasingly irrelevant, but her story makes great television. And that's all they care about.

As Peter Morgan (the show's creator and runner) has explained in interviews multiple times, the show is about the queen and about who has been closest to her personally, and her sister Margaret was always her best friend throughout their lives together.

This is a show about Elizabeth II. The most important people in her life after her father died were Margaret, Philip, and her mother. That's why they get the most attention on the show after the Queen does. We even get a fair amount of the Earl of Caernarvon (or "Porchey") because he was the queen's best friend outside of her family.

Margaret's best friend was her sister, r8, just as she was her sister's best friend.
