Deadly Shooting in Portland After Pro-Trump Ralliers Clash With Protesters

A caravan of supporters of President Trump drove through downtown Portland, which has seen nightly protests against police violence and racial injustice. One person was shot and killed in the conflicts that erupted.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man was shot and killed Saturday as a large group of supporters of President Trump traveled in a caravan through downtown Portland, Ore., which has seen nightly protests for three consecutive months.

The pro-Trump rally drew hundreds of trucks full of supporters into the city. At times, Trump supporters and counterprotesters clashed on the streets, with people shooting paintball guns from the beds of pickup trucks and protesters throwing objects back at them.

A video that purports to be of the shooting, taken from the far side of the street, showed a small group of people in the road outside what appears to be a parking garage. Gunfire erupts, and a man collapses in the street.

The man who was shot and killed was wearing a hat with the insignia of Patriot Prayer, a far-right group based in Portland that has clashed with protesters in the past.

The Portland Police Bureau said that officers heard reports of gunfire shortly before 9 p.m. and found a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. It was determined that the victim had died. They did not release any information about a possible gunman.

At the scene, police officers blocked off the road and medics attended to a person who appeared to have a chest wound.

Portland has seen nightly demonstrations since the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis in May. In recent days, right-wing demonstrations have also sprung up in the city, and Mr. Trump has repeatedly highlighted the unrest in Portland as evidence of the need for a tougher law-and-order response to the chaotic protests over police violence and racial injustice that have swept through many American cities.

The Trump supporters gathered earlier Saturday in the suburbs and plotted a route for the several hundred vehicles involved in the event that would have kept them on the highways outside the city center. But some of the ralliers headed directly downtown, where counterprotesters confronted some of the vehicles. Some of the conflicts led to fistfights. In one encounter, a vehicle ran over a bike

by Anonymousreply 1August 30, 2020 6:20 AM

... While protests in Portland have persisted, their numbers have changed over time. The nightly events began with mass demonstrations after Mr. Floyd’s death, then shrank to smaller numbers of people who repeatedly clashed with the police. In July, when the federal government sent camouflaged agents into the city, the protest numbers grew dramatically once again. In more recent days, the protest crowd has typically numbered just a few hundred people. On Friday, after a peaceful demonstration in front of Mayor Ted Wheeler’s residence, a crowd went out to a police association building, where some of the protesters set fire to the front of the building before the police dispersed the crowd.

The police have made dozens of arrests in recent days as they have chased protesters through the streets, at times knocking them to the ground.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly focused on the unrest in Portland, including during the Republican National Convention last week, challenging the city’s leaders to end the chaos. Mr. Trump said in a tweet on Friday that the federal government would go into the city if the mayor were unable to maintain control.

Mr. Wheeler has asked Mr. Trump to stay away, saying the earlier federal presence had made things worse.

There is a curfew and we're in the middle of a health crisis.

Why do these people break the curfew and go out at night in order to play cowboy games with each other?

They are playing with danger. Why do they do it? And why should the taxpayer have to pay to clean up for their mischief-making?

I was born and raised in this city—Ted is not cut out for his job. His "speeches" regarding the ongoing riots downtown are all over the place, and he can barely get out a sentence without stuttering. Meanwhile, the delusional city commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has happily been fanning the flames, going so far as to make up stories that police have been staging fires and blaming it on the protesters. It's not even a matter of right versus left—it's a matter of people in leadership positions who have no leadership capabilities.

by Anonymousreply 82August 30, 2020 7:38 AM

r31 how can we know what it "means" when BLM has no leadership to clearly state their positions? They have a bunch of people on social media, and a few figureheads, but no consensus. They also make outrageous statements that seem to be designed to foment rage wars on twitter, not least because they make no effort to explain them. "Defund the Police" was actually fleshed out by older PoCs, moderate leftists and academics, not the social media screamers. And don't start me on the Clout Wars & Revenge aspects of middle class BLM PoCs.

Back in the day, the BPP would talk shit thru megaphones on the street, but they had newsletters and pamphlets and "spokesmen" who would explain the slogans. I'm not speaking on the content, but their ideas were made clear if you wanted to know.

r139. Yes it does say he is "Antifa %100 All the Way!". Here is the full text of his post from 10 weeks ago:

michael_reinoehl Every Revolution needs people that are willing and ready to fight. There are so many of us protesters that are just protesting without a clue of where that will lead. That's just the beginning that's where the fight starts. If that's as far as you can take it thank you for your participation but please stand aside and support the ones that are willing to fight. I am 100% ANTIFA all the way! I am willing to fight for my brothers and sisters! Even if some of them are too ignorant to realize what antifa truly stands for. We do not want violence but we will not run from it either! If the police continue to pick on and beat up innocent citizens that are peacefully voicing their objections, it must be met with equal force! We are currently living through a crucial point in Humanities evolution. We truly have an opportunity right now to fix everything. But it will be a fight like no other! It will be a war and like all wars there will be casualties. I was in the army and I hated it. I did not feel like fighting for them would ever be a good cause. Today's protesters and antifa are my brothers in arms. This is a Cause to fight for This truly is fighting for my country! I have children that need to live in a world run by Common Sense and human decency. And I will do anything to make sure that happens. Now is the time to change the course of humanity. If we fold now just because they show some Force we will be lost for another hundred years. And I don't think the planet will let us live that long if we don't straighten shit up. Please be safe strong and United. I love you all❤️💪🙏 #Antifa #blaklivesmatter #fuckthepolice"

If you've provided material support to a terrorist organization, what are the legal implications for you?

For instance, you donated money to a group that purchased materials to make incendiary weapons or gave rides to people you knew were intending to cause violence at their destination.

The argument that his death is no great loss and it was just 'taking trash off the street' due to his political position pretty much supports the notion that it is okay for cops to kill criminals (aka George Floyd) as they too are just taking deplorables off the street.

[quote] LMFAO Antifa doesn't exist, but I wish they did! We've been making fun of you upthread

One can only assume that this ignorance about Antifa is born out of the dismal educational system in the US that completely neglects 20th century European history save maybe touching upon WW2.

Someone here needs to read a bit more and learn about Antifa's history - both pre and post-WW2 as well as its more modern patterns and collective action. If that's too much to wrap your head around, cause I realize starting your little "revolution" is time consuming, then start with its "blossoming" in the 1990s following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Especially its German chapter and activities. For anyone with any knowledge of the history of 20th and 21st century political movements - particularly in Western AND Eastern Europe - the meme that "there is no Antifa" is laughable. And the denial is most assuredly deliberate.

[quote] How come when concrete information comes to light (not twitter rumours and hearsay) Antifa always look like bloodthirsty psychos?

LOL! Well, I don't know anything about this recent death in Portland yet but maybe because one of Antifa's tenets is: By any means necessary. Violence is very much a part of its philosophy. That violence is not to be limited to far-right opponents and activities, indeed historians posit that the far-right opposition is just a ruse to distract from the real target which is the political system of liberal democracy because Antifa believes its roots in capitalism is just "fascism" and must be destroyed. They know that the far-right extremists have no real power so they target democratic leaders and institutions such as courts, educational systems, etc. Exaggerating the sins of democratic government serves to undermine the institutions it relies on to prevent chaos and to unite and serve its citizens. I realize that most participants in these protests who become violent may not realize what is going on but the leaders/organizers know what the real target is. Hijacking worthy causes has always been a tactic of Antifa.

This is where the term "useful idiot" comes in.

by Anonymousreply 154August 30, 2020 5:29 PM

If we are discussing becoming part of a conspiracy and the government charging you with conspiracy then you as a knowing member of the conspiracy are responsible for all the actions of the other co-conspirators whether or not you know all the other conspirators and whether or not you know the actions/crimes committed by the other conspirators. Just being part of the chain makes you guilty of the ultimate crimes. That's why the government likes conspiracy charges - all they have to do is prove you knew there was an agreement between 2 or more people to commit an illegal act - that's a conspiracy. Usually an "overt act" is required as an element of the offense. An overt act could anything like to meet with others to plan, driving someone to the store to buy tools of the crime, paying for a bus ticket to further the conspiracy or a million other little seemingly innocent acts.

I got attacked for victim blaming in the other thread a few weeks ago and I'm sure I will again, but if you willingly go to an area that you know violence is occurring on a regular basis, you have to accept that you may become a victim of that violence. I'm not saying the person who was shot last night was in the vehicles in the tweet, just that based on what he was wearing, he was probably aligned with the behavior shown in this tweet. Same for the shooter. It appears he was itching for a confrontation, hence the weapon and video of him pulling/cocking it when standing next to trucks that were driving by. He deserves the full punishment of the law.

In this case it appears they were most likely both trash.

Angela Davis and Ava DuVernay Discuss America's 'Racial Reckoning' for Vanity Fair Digital Cover Story

“If it’s true that names are being changed, statues are being removed, it should also be true that the institutions are looking inward and figuring out how to radically transform themselves. by Anonymousreply 185August 31, 2020 2:40 AM

The lefty protesters in Portland are NOT Antifa (Rose City Antifa, the local chapter, has actually been pretty quiet recently) and they're NOT BLM activists. They're garden-variety anarchists (I know this is a weird concept for other parts of the country) who opportunistically latch on to any movement that allows them to show contempt for authority. They're focused almost entirely on the police and police brutality, but they do tend to show up when right-wing militias come to town, just like Antifa used to. They only give lip service to racism issues, and BLM here in Portland doesn't support them (and in fact is largely fed up with them).

However, they don't ever carry guns, or use guns at all. Only the right-wing militias do that. That, coupled with the fact that the right-wing crowd are all prone to get in violent arguments with each other over the slightest thing, makes me think this guy was killed by a fellow right-winger.

It wild the stock market is booming, retail spending is up, home values are up..yet there is constant unrest and non stop doom and gloom regurgitated from one channel to the next.

Not much to contribute, but the obvious lack of leadership on multiple levels everywhere just makes it all worse. Jesus the thread about impending authoritarianism is so depressing

by Anonymousreply 191August 31, 2020 6:02 AM

Michael Reinoehl is the suspect at this time, he doesn't seem like a normal protester, he seems like one of those guys who latches on to a movement because of weird personal issues going on with him.

But that happens on all sides of these situations, especially when the president gets involved and encourages it. They attract people with personality/mental issues. It's only a matter of who is going to shoot first, the far-right malcontent Trumpster teen or the far-left mentally unstable GenXer.

That's what Trump and the GOP were hoping for: the violence to escalate.

[quote] retail spending is up? How can this be with so many out of work?

Does that number include all of the groceries people are buying instead of grabbing lunch to eat at their desk and/or eating out?

And the home sales number makes sense as the suburb are booming with people wanting to get some space if they are going to be working from home and not commuting in the city.

by Anonymousreply 195August 31, 2020 12:18 PM

R192. I wager most of the present diehard protesters in Portland are people with psychological issues. In fact most of the Antifi members are probably so. Looking for a group and cause. Not that different than QAnon. Really.

by Anonymousreply 196August 31, 2020 12:18 PM

A lot of the nightly protestors are hard core drug addicts.

by Anonymousreply 197August 31, 2020 12:36 PM

"Similar to the jobs report, retail sales stand in stark contrast to the idea that growth in July 'stalled' – when in fact it continued at a robust, if somewhat slower, pace," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst said in a note.

Considered a bellwether for an economy that gets two-thirds of its activity from consumers, retail sales saw an 8.4% surge in June that included huge gains in furniture and appliance sales. That June number was already strong at 7.5% but was revised higher.

However, those gains cooled as a resurgence in Covid-19 cases caused reopening activities to slow.

Electronics and appliance sales saw monthly sales jump 22.9% while clothing increased 5.7% and bars and restaurants, an industry especially battered by the coronavirus, were up 5%.

The past three months show that "consumer spending has rocketed to record highs," said Chris Rupkey, chief financial economist at MUFG Union Bank. "There can't still be a recession in the country if the consumer is spending their hearts out like this”

^^^

Perhaps everyone spending that extra unemployment? The protests seem to be a way for young people to congregate. What other venue do they have right now? Schools, bars, clubs, concerts - closed. All that energy has to go somewhere

Alright, now we’re close to sixty days to the election. It’s time for Democratic leadership to start condemning and doing their part to end the protests. At the beginning of all this, they had general public support for police reform. Now with the unending violence, people are frustrated.

I just don’t know how anyone can say the optics of showing your greatest sympathy for degenerates who fought back police and acting like the destruction of major cities is progress. Like, it baffles the mind.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, so let’s get that out of the way.

I don’t believe this shit ever happened. Why? Because Donald Trump is the POTUS, and Bill Barr is his stooge.

Can the president order the FBI or CIA to conduct dirty business, such as faking the murder of one of his supporters? Even if he cannot, what would stop DJT from doing so, since he has done pretty much every other unconstitutional and illegal shit since day one?

I despise sounding like some loon on REDDIT, claiming that Sandy Hook didn’t happen. But I’m looking at the character of this man, DJT, and those in his administration, and I have zero evidence that shows this is not something he’d order and have much pushback.

This man and his administration are absolutely power hungry driven people, who also happen to be craven and immoral. I put NOTHING past them and I believe that there’s a 50% or more chance of this being orchestrated by him and his advisors.

JMHO. I know it sounds completely nuts, but look at who we’re talking about here. This is a President and his administration who promote “alternative facts” rather than “just the facts”, so a false flag is a HUGE possibility.
