WHET Nelly Furtardo
A successful beginning in 2000 with songs like “I’m like a bird” and “turn of the light” followed by a string of hits a few years later in the mid 00s through a powerful collaboration with Timbaland and JT which included “promiscuous” “say it right” “give it to me” and “all good things” then poof she disappeared. She had a few songs (misses not hits) thereafter and that was it..
She had such a huge moment there in the mid 00s with Timbaland and JT that Madge tried to copy her with the “Hard Candy” record. Although “give it to me” was Timbaland’s record featuring JT and Nelly, Nelly was a big part of its success and “4 minutes” seemed like an attempt to recreate it. Madge also had a record called “give it to me” on “Hard Candy”. Madge then used Timbaland’s beat for “give it to me” for her tour version of “vogue” on the “sticky and sweet tour”!
So what happened, did Madonna mess the partnership and sound that Timbaland and Nelly had, was it the arrival of Gaga with it’s resurgence of pop or did she just go back to Canada to live a nice quiet life?
WHET Nelly Furtado?

She reminds me of the dorky girl in school who gets an image makeover, starts trying to put on the sex appeal, hanging out with bad boys, acting tough.
She hasn't had a hit in 13 years, she should have followed up her Loose Album sooner.

People forget how she was one of *the* sounds of the 2000s, I still like to go back and listen to her old tracks, there hasn't been a collab like Nelly and Timberland since, lightening in a pop bottle.

R9 true and she ruled the summer of 06 as did Timbaland and JT. Their songs were everywhere. It was just such an expected turn in her career given her first record. I would also say the collaboration of Gwen Steffani and Pharrell was also really good which is why Madge tried to recreate it on Hard Candy on the songs she did with Pharrell.

Years ago she had a concert in my country. She flew here only a few hours before the concert and while most celebs would head straight into the hotel to get some rest she decided to visit the National Museum instead. Sounds like a very smart lady to me.

Her Timbaland album was largely inspired by Gwen Stefani's solo debut, I think she herself has said this herself. To me, Gwen's sound (and Timbaland's) was possibly the defining one of the mid 00s.

I wondered the same thing, OP. She supposedly had kids and stepped back from the limelight but I’m not sure if that was preferred or because she was fading? She had a great run in the early to mid 2000s. Why Do All Good Things Come to an End (Not sure of it is titled this) is a great song and unexpectedly sad. I bought her Folklore album in 2003? Or so before Loose came out and really enjoyed the album’s mix of pop and folk and some songs on her other albums. That said, if she wrote her own lyrics, she needed help. The lyrics on some of her biggest hits really sounded juvenile and simplistic (I.e. Shit on the Radio, etc.). But she was definitely one of the biggest pop acts at the time.

I loved All Good Things too. It’s sad that she’s let herself and her career go. Maybe she felt under too much pressure to come back and live up to the loose record and her body then.

People forget that the album between her debut and Loose--Folklore--was a huge bomb. Loose was her attempt to stay relevant. It's actually really impressive that 6 years after her debut, she managed to have huge success with that bomb in the middle. But the reason Loose was so popular is no doubt Timbaland, everything he touched turned to gold in the late 90s and 00s.

Her 2012 album which came after Loose and a foreign language album - The Spirit Indestructible - was another huge bomb and she was dropped by/left her label.
Her last album was The Ride in 2017. Decent but not great reviews, no hits, no tour, little promotion, no sales.
She has since deleted her social media.

You can't go back and forth between sounds if you're a pop star, audiences find that confusing and just off-putting. It's like she wanted success but didn't know what she wanted more--to be authentic or to stay relevant.

I remember seeing Madonna's Rebel Heart tour in Toronto in 2015. Each night Madonna would bring somebody up from the audience to be her "Unapologetic Bitch". In other cities, there were often celebrities picked. On this night, Madonna picked this somewhat fat, mannish looking woman. I was shocked to learn it was Nelly Furtado. No Doubt had already been piddling around with various musical styles/genres (reggae, electronica) beyond ska before Gwen's solo debut, so it didn't seem too jarring by that point.

I like her, but not all of her work. R27 and 28 are right.
I personally love FOLKLORE but knew it would not be a hit. She is a very nice, authentic and grounded person. She lives near Drake so I think she's got plenty of cash. She chose to follow her muse instead of staying commercial. Doing a Spanish language album after "Loose" was clearly not a commercial choice. She did an album after that which I purchased that I couldn't even listen to.
A few years back, between records, trying to figure out what she wanted to do next, she worked in a friend's record shop just to do something normal and be around music and people that enjoyed music. I thought that was really cool.
I much more admire someone following their muse and not afraid of getting curves than trying to appeal to teenagers, fucking a teenager, buying children and making a fool of herself on social media.

R76 I also appreciate that she seems more grounded overall. She had made some mistakes at times (and played a $1 million personal concert for Libyan leader Gaddafi at some point back when a lot of stars were doing it for cash) but seemed to be one of the few who could stay humble and normal. The one exception is that she did the “hint that I’m bisexual but then take it back right away” thing in the aughts that so many pop stars/female celebrities were doing. Thought that was annoying and I wish she could’ve just owned her bisexuality fully or not said anything at all.

I enjoy All Good things, fantastic pop song. I really believe that Furtado simply didn't have the maniacal Type A drive that it took to stay in the spotlight 24/7. Not everyone is Type A and that's a good thing. Try spending some time in a place where 90 percent of the populace is Type A, like Washington DC. It's soul killing.
