CHADWICK BOSEMAN IS DEAD TO ME

Colon Cancer. Age 43.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 571September 8, 2020 7:54 PM

Holy shit. I remember seeing a pic of him a couple of weeks ago and they were saying he was sick.

by Anonymousreply 1August 29, 2020 2:18 AM

Leo did it.

by Anonymousreply 2August 29, 2020 2:18 AM

This can’t be real. I see everyone tweeting about it but it won’t register in my brain.

I remember last year him presenting an award and everyone noticing how thin he was getting. Some even said he looked sick. Ugh.

This is tragic.

by Anonymousreply 3August 29, 2020 2:18 AM

WTF? He had colon cancer for 4 years? He had so much ahead of him :(

by Anonymousreply 4August 29, 2020 2:18 AM

I wonder if he married his fiance on his deathbed. It could get messy with his family.

by Anonymousreply 5August 29, 2020 2:20 AM

That is why you need to get your feces checked out for blood - that is the first symptom.

by Anonymousreply 6August 29, 2020 2:20 AM

Black Panther came out in 2018... I wonder if Marvel knew? Maybe he was in remission?

by Anonymousreply 7August 29, 2020 2:20 AM

Wow. What a shock.

I know people commented that he looked ill months back. Much speculation about drugs etc.

by Anonymousreply 8August 29, 2020 2:20 AM

Is it possible his proximity to vibranium on the set of Black Panther caused his cancer?

by Anonymousreply 9August 29, 2020 2:21 AM

The press release said wife so pretty sure he married the fiancée

by Anonymousreply 10August 29, 2020 2:24 AM

Damn, I hate that. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 11August 29, 2020 2:24 AM

Feels like a robbery.

by Anonymousreply 12August 29, 2020 2:25 AM

Colon Cancer? At 43 yo? WTF?!

by Anonymousreply 13August 29, 2020 2:25 AM
Feels like a robbery.

Is this the time to racial profile?

by Anonymousreply 14August 29, 2020 2:26 AM

I know it's stupid to get worked up over celebrity deaths, but this one hurts.

by Anonymousreply 15August 29, 2020 2:26 AM
Colon Cancer? At 43 yo? WTF?!

39, actually.

by Anonymousreply 16August 29, 2020 2:27 AM

Did it run if his family? Wow, 43 is really young.

by Anonymousreply 17August 29, 2020 2:27 AM

I can’t help but wonder what Marvel will do now with his death.

by Anonymousreply 18August 29, 2020 2:27 AM

I have to say, considering we know he has had cancer for 4 years, it’s fucking incredible that he was able to not only film Black Panther, a high energy stunts heavy movie but also do the relentless press tours for Marvel back to back. And you have healthy actors complaining over press junkets!!!!

by Anonymousreply 19August 29, 2020 2:27 AM

Young is rare but not impossible.

by Anonymousreply 20August 29, 2020 2:27 AM

Very sad. Black Panther was a fun action movie. Maybe Marvel will have his “sister” carry the torch, so to speak.

RIP, Mr. Boseman.

by Anonymousreply 21August 29, 2020 2:28 AM

I can't breath!

by Anonymousreply 22August 29, 2020 2:28 AM

R19 3 times.

Black Panther, then Infinity War and filmed Endgame scenes.

by Anonymousreply 23August 29, 2020 2:28 AM

Who you callin' sister?

by Anonymousreply 24August 29, 2020 2:28 AM

So fucking sad.

by Anonymousreply 25August 29, 2020 2:29 AM

I participated in that thread a few months ago, when the tabloids published those pics of him being pushed out of the ED in a wheelchair. I said then, pancreatic cancer, has to be. The wasted frame, huge weight loss. Everyone else said drugs but I didn't believe that would be the case if he was seen leaving the ED in such open and calm circumstances.

I believed that ED was probably a local affiliate hospital and NOT Cedars or one of the big area institutions. I bet he was getting treatment at one of those for privacy purposes.

by Anonymousreply 26August 29, 2020 2:29 AM

Holy shit.

2020 is just way too much

by Anonymousreply 27August 29, 2020 2:30 AM

Damn, I normally do not worked up over a celebrity death but this one hurts. He was a phenomenal actor. Too fucking young.

by Anonymousreply 28August 29, 2020 2:30 AM

R26 Speaking of that, it’s crazy to me celebrities will still go to Cedars Sinai when it seems that TMZ always has the inside story on what happens there. I googled it and it isn’t even the #1 ranked hospital in LA. I wonder why celebrities flock to it?

by Anonymousreply 29August 29, 2020 2:31 AM

I knew it wasn't drugs because of that IG post he made - I think it was a tribute upon someone's passing. If he was strung out, he wouldn't have made such a post. I think it was taken down, by not immediately. His team clearly only acted when the commentary got too large/widespread.

by Anonymousreply 30August 29, 2020 2:31 AM

There are some types of colon cancer, like breast cancer, that are extremely aggressive and hard to treat. He probably had one of these.

There is thought to be a genetic link, sort of like the BRCA-1 gene in familial breast cancer, that causes a high risk of aggressive colon cancer in men in the families affected. I'd be curious if Chadwick was affected by this and if other family members have also had this type of cancer.

by Anonymousreply 31August 29, 2020 2:31 AM

He was great in Get On Up

by Anonymousreply 32August 29, 2020 2:31 AM

*but not immediately

by Anonymousreply 33August 29, 2020 2:31 AM

Very sad - he kept it so private too.

by Anonymousreply 34August 29, 2020 2:31 AM

He means so much to so many young black people. Seeing Black Panther was such a huge deal to so many black children (And adults).

I can’t fathom how they will handle his characters absence.

by Anonymousreply 35August 29, 2020 2:32 AM

God. He just really made it. Such a great actor and seemingly good guy.

I so want to be a DLer and be snarky or full of gallows humor, but can't.

by Anonymousreply 36August 29, 2020 2:32 AM

Oh no. That’s tragic.

by Anonymousreply 37August 29, 2020 2:32 AM

This hit me hard :(

by Anonymousreply 38August 29, 2020 2:33 AM

r29 Cedars and St Johns in Santa M have 'celeb friendly' protocols, whereby celebs can be admitted thru private entrances (I believe Cedars has one underneath the building) and be placed in private celeb-friendly wards/rooms. That is partially why they are still popular among that set.

I speculated a few months ago when the photos of Boseman surfaced, outside the local ED, that the reason he got photographed was b/c he as at a smaller local affiliate, without a private entrance/exit and celeb-protocol. Someone with a cell phone, and quick eye, managed to catch a couple of shots of him as they pushed him out to his curbside vehicle out front. And sold to the pap agencies.

by Anonymousreply 39August 29, 2020 2:34 AM

That is really fucking sad. Snark fails. Awful news.

by Anonymousreply 40August 29, 2020 2:36 AM

Its sad but are we going to be subjected to nonstop Chadwick news like anytime a big black celeb dies?

by Anonymousreply 41August 29, 2020 2:37 AM

I’m so stunned and saddened. God be with his family and friends

by Anonymousreply 42August 29, 2020 2:37 AM

OMG

by Anonymousreply 43August 29, 2020 2:37 AM

If 2020 wanted to take a black celebrity, it could have had Kanye.

by Anonymousreply 44August 29, 2020 2:38 AM

Heartsick over this. God help us

by Anonymousreply 45August 29, 2020 2:38 AM

R41 anytime a big celeb dies. Period. Asshole.

by Anonymousreply 46August 29, 2020 2:38 AM

Yeah, r41, it's only black celebrity deaths that get media coverage *rolls eyes*

by Anonymousreply 47August 29, 2020 2:38 AM

This one really made me sad. Wow.

by Anonymousreply 48August 29, 2020 2:38 AM
Young is rare but not impossible.

It's not even that rare anymore. If you are young and have any symptoms at all, or a family history, get your ass checked.

by Anonymousreply 49August 29, 2020 2:38 AM

I saw the RIP trend on Twitter before knowing what he died from. I knew it wasn't drugs or suicide. He just didn't seem the type.

by Anonymousreply 50August 29, 2020 2:39 AM

R46/r47 the black ones always get a lot more attention.

by Anonymousreply 51August 29, 2020 2:39 AM

I agree, let's see if Kanye can offer himself instead.

by Anonymousreply 52August 29, 2020 2:39 AM
Its sad but are we going to be subjected to nonstop Chadwick news like anytime a big black celeb dies?

Hopefully the next big black celeb who dies flatten you in the process.

by Anonymousreply 53August 29, 2020 2:39 AM

It's a bit soon to speculate, but I do wonder what Marvel will do with the franchise, which was huge for them. He was the lead face of it (Black Panther). This is a celeb gossip site with a lot of discussion of Hollywood workings, so I wonder what will happen there.

by Anonymousreply 54August 29, 2020 2:39 AM

*flattens

by Anonymousreply 55August 29, 2020 2:39 AM

I expect they'll cast a female in the role.

by Anonymousreply 56August 29, 2020 2:40 AM

This is really awful

by Anonymousreply 57August 29, 2020 2:40 AM

R56 it must be a trans woman of color!

by Anonymousreply 58August 29, 2020 2:40 AM

I know it's tacky to ask this now, but what do people really think: do they re-cast The Black Panther? Or does his character die, and they have some adjacent character step up? What's going to happen to the MCU now?

by Anonymousreply 59August 29, 2020 2:42 AM

He was the original Reggie on "All My Children" before Michael B. Jordan took over the role.

by Anonymousreply 60August 29, 2020 2:42 AM

Give the role to Grace Jones!

by Anonymousreply 61August 29, 2020 2:43 AM

R59 they will shut down all black superhero movies forever, as a tribute.

by Anonymousreply 62August 29, 2020 2:43 AM

Chadwick Boseman, who played Jackie Robinson in “42,” has died at the age of 42 on Jackie Robinson Day.

by Anonymousreply 63August 29, 2020 2:43 AM

R54 His sister Shuri will become black panther like in the comics.

by Anonymousreply 64August 29, 2020 2:44 AM

I have to wonder if Marvel knew. They had to know for the last year, but did they know before he was cast? Because clearly he was cast AFTER he already knew he had cancer...

by Anonymousreply 65August 29, 2020 2:44 AM

Actually colon cancer among young population (under 50) is increasing, it's the one age group where this is happening. We're not sure why but possibly related to lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption, salty and fatty foods, just to name some risk factors. So now if we get younger patients coming in with symptoms consistent with colon cancer, we don't just dismiss the possibility outright, because rates are increasing among younger people.

Not saying CB got colon cancer due to lifestyle choices at all, it's very sad to die this young, but hopefully his diagnosis and death will bring some awareness of young onset colon cancer.

by Anonymousreply 66August 29, 2020 2:45 AM

r51, no, they don't

by Anonymousreply 67August 29, 2020 2:45 AM

I would be surprised if he told Marvel.

by Anonymousreply 68August 29, 2020 2:45 AM

Wakanda Forever!

Guess again.

by Anonymousreply 69August 29, 2020 2:46 AM

Mr. Boseman, through his brilliant portrayals of heroes real and imagined, lived many extraordinary adventures during his brief time among us, entertaining and enlightening us along the way. The awe of it all!

Rest In Peace.

by Anonymousreply 70August 29, 2020 2:46 AM

Get ready to hear abouy Wakada nonstop again or whatever tf it's called.

by Anonymousreply 71August 29, 2020 2:47 AM

Black Panther is way too big of a character in the comics to have the little that we got. We didn’t get nearly enough of T’Challa. I hope they re-cast.

by Anonymousreply 72August 29, 2020 2:47 AM

I can't even imagine anyone being as good in the role as he was.

by Anonymousreply 73August 29, 2020 2:48 AM

r72

Who would you suggest? Kofi Siriboe?

by Anonymousreply 74August 29, 2020 2:48 AM

Holy crap. It's not so long since he achieved wide recognition in his films. What a crappy year this has been. 2020 can't finish fast enough.

by Anonymousreply 75August 29, 2020 2:48 AM

What the fuck?

by Anonymousreply 76August 29, 2020 2:49 AM

Batman has been played by seven different actors and Spider Man by three.

by Anonymousreply 77August 29, 2020 2:50 AM

Vanity often plays a role in the death of people with Colorectal Cancer. They don't want to live with a colostomy bag. It's too embarrassing. It's the reason Farrah Fawcett kept pursuing treatments, but had she had her colon removed and got a colostomy, she would be alive today!

by Anonymousreply 78August 29, 2020 2:50 AM

Shit. Colon cancer is a nasty, nasty illness. My grandpa died of it. My dad died of it. Regarding his age, there's a local former news anchor whose son died of it at 27 years old, so anyone can get it. One of the guys from the I Love New York reality show who wound up getting his own show died of it in his 30s.

Unfortunately, due to insurance purposes you have to be. I think, 45 before a colonoscopy is covered. Bullshit. So, even though I lost my dad and grandfather to it I still have to wait.

Anyone else here who is of age and had a family history, GET YOUR DAMN COLONOSCOPY. I'm telling you it's an awful, awful disease.

by Anonymousreply 79August 29, 2020 2:50 AM

They won’t recast because he was the face of that franchise and such a huge character to the franchise final phase. This made him a household name worldwide.

They will retire the character out of my respect to him.

by Anonymousreply 80August 29, 2020 2:51 AM

Out of respect to him. Not my.

by Anonymousreply 81August 29, 2020 2:51 AM
Unfortunately, due to insurance purposes you have to be. I think, 45 before a colonoscopy is covered. Bullshit. So, even though I lost my dad and grandfather to it I still have to wait.

That seems crazy with your medical history. And it makes no sense. Try again.

by Anonymousreply 82August 29, 2020 2:52 AM
His sister Shuri will become black panther like in the comics

This. Its the best way forward in this situation.

by Anonymousreply 83August 29, 2020 2:52 AM

They'll recast with a Brit, maybe the guy from How to Get Away with Murder / Harry Potter.

by Anonymousreply 84August 29, 2020 2:52 AM

R77 not because the actor died... this is like what happened to Heath Ledger. Joker was supposed to be in Rises but instead they dropped him because they didn’t want anyone else in the role until they started from scratch again

by Anonymousreply 85August 29, 2020 2:53 AM
I participated in that thread a few months ago, when the tabloids published those pics of him being pushed out of the ED in a wheelchair.

ED?

by Anonymousreply 86August 29, 2020 2:53 AM

Anal HPV. Sad.
That is why you need to get your feces checked out for blood - that is the first symptom.

by Anonymousreply 88August 29, 2020 2:54 AM

Emergency Department.

by Anonymousreply 89August 29, 2020 2:54 AM

They'll resurrect Michael B. Jordon's character. It's a comic book universe. They kill off and resurrect characters all the time.

by Anonymousreply 90August 29, 2020 2:55 AM

Black Panther really had a massive impact on black kids.

by Anonymousreply 92August 29, 2020 2:55 AM

What is ED?

by Anonymousreply 93August 29, 2020 2:55 AM

This is actually wigging me the fuck out tonight. I'm roughly his age and was also diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer four years ago. All I can do is sit here and wonder why him and not me, and when will the other shoe finally drop. People talk about how difficult the treatment is for cancer. It's nothing, NOTHING compared to wondering when it's going to sneak back up on you once you're in remission.

by Anonymousreply 94August 29, 2020 2:55 AM

I think I woke up the whole house.

Goddammit, I am so angry and there's no one I can blame.

by Anonymousreply 95August 29, 2020 2:55 AM
Black Panther really had a massive impact on black kids.

You sound unbelievably white.

by Anonymousreply 96August 29, 2020 2:56 AM

Isn’t it usually ER?

by Anonymousreply 97August 29, 2020 2:56 AM

Most of the “stunts” were CGI. The PR tour was far more gruelling.

by Anonymousreply 98August 29, 2020 2:56 AM

They can recast with Yahya Abdul-Mateen.

by Anonymousreply 99August 29, 2020 2:57 AM

God, thinking about those pictures only a little awhile ago of him in a wheelchair outside the hospital ... he looked in seriously bad shape but people were speculating about drugs/some kind of eating disorder ....

by Anonymousreply 100August 29, 2020 2:57 AM

R65 He was cast as Black Panther in early 2015.

by Anonymousreply 101August 29, 2020 2:58 AM

I doubt they would make MBJ’s Killmonger the new Black Panther, although I think he would absolutely nail the role as T’Challa himself... Killmonger in the first movie was a murderous black separatist

by Anonymousreply 102August 29, 2020 2:59 AM

All black people look the same so they can cast anyone and they'll be fine!!!! Long live Hollywood and their greed!!!!

by Anonymousreply 103August 29, 2020 2:59 AM

R94 I can’t even imagine. I’m so sorry.

by Anonymousreply 104August 29, 2020 3:00 AM

This one just makes me so sad. I knew something was wrong based on those last paparazzi photos.

by Anonymousreply 105August 29, 2020 3:02 AM

This is so tragic. He always seemed like a genuinely nice humble guy which is rare in the industry.

by Anonymousreply 106August 29, 2020 3:02 AM

He was cast as Black Panther almost 2 years before he even filmed Black Panther.

by Anonymousreply 107August 29, 2020 3:03 AM

Cast as Black Panther in early 2015. Filmed in 2017. Released 2018.

He was diagnosed a year after accepting the role.

by Anonymousreply 109August 29, 2020 3:05 AM

Now I’m not saying he had a dick up his butt... but HPV is the leading cause of Colon Cancer.

by Anonymousreply 110August 29, 2020 3:05 AM

Do you think any of his castmates knew? How was he able to keep it so quiet?

by Anonymousreply 111August 29, 2020 3:06 AM

I think Katie Couric’s husband died of colon cancer, in his 30’s.

by Anonymousreply 112August 29, 2020 3:06 AM

Marcia Cross certainly hasn't had a cock up her butt. Maybe a strap on.

by Anonymousreply 122August 29, 2020 3:16 AM

r90 and r102, when Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) died, as a person of "Royal Blood, he went to the "Ancestral Plane" from where you can come back from. So, Killmonger could be Black Panther in future films.

I kinda thought something was amiss when Marvel was cagey about why the next BP was still in pre-production and when the next installment would be released.

I think Shuri or Killmonger would be great as BP.

by Anonymousreply 135August 29, 2020 3:28 AM

R134 And from the reactions of his castmates it's obvious they knew.

by Anonymousreply 136August 29, 2020 3:29 AM

It is. AMA recommends screening AA men at 40 and insurance will pay for a colonoscopy at 40.

God really needed some good humans this year. This is just God awful! Rest in peace Chadwick.Such a talented, young and handsome actor who could have won an Oscar one day.

by Anonymousreply 144August 29, 2020 3:35 AM

It's terrible that he died so young. Concerning the movie Black Panther, I tried watching it earlier this year on Disney+. I don't watch any of the Marvel movies, but tried with Black Panther because of the acclaim for it. I didn't get too far into it. I couldn't understand what was happening. It seemed disjointed.

by Anonymousreply 145August 29, 2020 3:37 AM

Yes, R142, you clearly live under a rock.

by Anonymousreply 146August 29, 2020 3:38 AM

so did he film black panther 2? Disney has been promoting it as recent as last month. Surely they would have known if he was sick??? Or did he hide it??

by Anonymousreply 147August 29, 2020 3:38 AM

After I got colon cancer, I began hearing about and meeting people who were even younger than I was who had it. My first day in the chair, I met a 29 year old who was midway through his chemo sessions for colon cancer. He had been diagnosed with Lynch's Syndrome.

I recall about a year after I had gone into remission, an article had been published in some Canadian medical journal that said Canadian doctors felt that if you had no medical history of colon cancer in your family, you could probably wait five more years to have your first colonoscopy and I was so angry. I was diagnosed at 40 and these fuckers are telling me I could have waited well past 50??

by Anonymousreply 148August 29, 2020 3:39 AM

I can't believe that ghoul Rush Limbaugh is still here and a young, talented, decent man had to die. What a hellscape this year is.

by Anonymousreply 151August 29, 2020 3:40 AM

Nope, they were scheduled to film next year. Corona may have delayed it but Boseman would still have been too ill.

by Anonymousreply 152August 29, 2020 3:40 AM

r142, you might not have seen his movies, but we have been discussing his gaunt appearance here for months and the internet noticed his drastic weight loss over a year ago.

by Anonymousreply 153August 29, 2020 3:41 AM

It was supposed to be filmed this year but was pushed back due to Corona.

So many black legends are dying in 2020. Kobe Bryant, John Lewis, now Chadwick Boseman. Did I miss someone? It’s so sad.

But maybe it’s a sign that a change gonna come? Maybe people will wake the fuck up? The US needs to be protecting and advancing its black people. Not leaving them to suffer and struggle generation after generation. We need change.

by Anonymousreply 161August 29, 2020 3:46 AM

Farrah and marcia cross had anal cancer which is mostly HPV related. Bozeman had colon cancer.

I have 2 relatives who died and one who survived it so I got my first one at 32 and insurance covered most of it.

by Anonymousreply 162August 29, 2020 3:46 AM
Yeah the screening age for African Americans should be way before age 50, African Americans have way higher rates of CRC.

While this is probably true, CRC is on the rise among young people of all races.

I was given a colonoscopy at 17 because my body was acting nuts and they thought I might have cancer. Thank God I didn’t. But insurance covered my colonoscopy

Is there a link between HPV and cancer? I think with the proliferation of HPV, rates of young people with terminal cancer before age 50 will become more common. But that's just my opinion. For whatever reason, the medical community is also extremely hesitant to administer the HPV vaccine unless you are a teenager. And on top of it they want you to wait until you are fucking 50 for a colonoscopy, even with the horrid diet most Americans have.

I know this is incredibly heartbreaking for Chadwick's family, friends and fans and I'm sad for them. I also feel a strange sense of peace about this too.

In just 43 years, this guy starred in some amazing, groundbreaking films that had a huge global impact. He also found love and had a partner.

There are people in the world who will live twice as long as him but won't have a fraction of his impact.

I know 43 is way too young, but to cram a lifetime of experiences and accomplishments into that amount of time is pretty remarkable. I'm happy he got to live out his dream.
Be aware of the symptoms and don't assume that because you eat a lot fiber, you couldn't have it or don't need to be screened.

I had 2 colonoscopies before 50 because I had symptoms -- blood, constipation, bloating, gas, feeling of incomplete evacuation -- which I later learned could be caused by any number of conditions from hemorroids to IBS. There are no "symptons" that indicate colon cancer. You could have advanced colon cancer before you have any "symptoms."

Yes there are. All the symptoms you had are symptoms of colon cancer and should be checked out, They are also symptoms of many other issues, so you don't necessarily have colon cancer if you're experiencing them, but you might. You are correct in stating that someone can have colon cancer with no symptoms., however.

It truly is sad he never got to film his sequel. It would feel a little better if it was filmed and we had that to at least look forward to. His movie was the first film with almost all black faces to make over $1 billion.

I wish we could see him in the role again.

Qanon creates a dark fantasy world turning supposedly liberal institutions like the media, the Democratic Party and Hollywood into literal monsters, cannibalistic pedophiles in positions of power, jews being prominent among them. No, seriously.

They believe that the military sought Trump’s leadership so that the evil media/Hollywood/democratic cabal can be arrested and sentenced to death — result: our children will no longer be raped and eaten.

Gay people should be very familiar with this mode of operation. If you don’t like someone, demonize them. It’s much easier to hate someone because you have convinced yourself he’s going to rape your little boy than it is to hate him because he’s somewhat differently oriented in his private life than you are.

The great Madeline Kahn died at 57 of ovarian cancer r248

Though it can argued than at a woman at 57 is way past her prime. At 57, a woman is barren and unfuckable if she is an American. Europeans have a slightly more lenient policy.

by Anonymousreply 263August 29, 2020 6:16 AM

Madeline's death crushed me R263

by Anonymousreply 264August 29, 2020 6:19 AM

Madeline Kahn was just starting a career resurgence when she died. She got rave reviews for Judy Berlin (which only came out after she died) and was in talks to do a revival of Dear World, among other things. John Cameron Mitchell wanted her to play the agent in the movie of Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

If she'd lived, she would have had the career longevity of a Betty White or Cloris Leachman.

by Anonymousreply 265August 29, 2020 6:23 AM

R263, I would agree with you about most actresses but MK was just so good and so watchable I’d argue she was the exception.

by Anonymousreply 266August 29, 2020 6:46 AM

Boseman was great as Thurgood Marshall, as James Brown, and as Jackie Robinson in addition to his Black Panther role. Just a really fine actor with a great resume — and so much more to come.

Watching him in interviews and on talk shows, I was always struck by his charisma, his warmth, and his humanity. He just seemed like an amazing person.

I’m heartbroken by this — much more than I usually am when an entertainer or big name dies. I admit hearing he died made me cry.

by Anonymousreply 268August 29, 2020 7:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 270August 29, 2020 7:46 AM

Sad, but true: men in their 40s can and do get colon cancer. Which is why all men (and women) should be checked by their doctor. Usually the procedure (a colonoscopy) is recommended for patients in their 50s, and older. But if there is a history of this disease in your family, you should be proactive and get checked even sooner.

by Anonymousreply 271August 29, 2020 8:09 AM

His Black Panther castmates still haven't posted on social media. Nothing, so far, from MBJ which makes me wonder if they knew. This must-have hit them so hard. Ryan Coogler, the director, was one of his best friends. He is also said to have been especially close to Lupita.

by Anonymousreply 272August 29, 2020 8:17 AM

RIP. Very sad news.

by Anonymousreply 273August 29, 2020 8:20 AM

There's no good to be found in this much-too early death, other than perhaps some people, especially people of color, will ask for colonoscopies that they otherwise would have put off. I'm always saddened when I think of talented people dying young when there was so much more they could have done if gifted with longer lives. It's a reminder to us all to try to accomplish more and not settle for endless hours passively watching TV.

So they was definitely a press cover up going on around his illness? Was it Disney that had the power to do that? How many tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars must it have cost to shut down stories that he was ill?

by Anonymousreply 275August 29, 2020 8:55 AM

Black people always look so young! It's not fair! They have such great skin free of any pimples and shiny white teeth! And they do not have to use sunscreen! I want to be black!

by Anonymousreply 276August 29, 2020 9:00 AM

I couldn't believe this when I saw it. Tragic.

The worst part R278 is that guy has been around for months and hasn't been banned at all. DL has always been sketchy but they used to at least get rid of the people screaming the n-word, they don't even bother with THAT anymore.

by Anonymousreply 280August 29, 2020 9:28 AM

So far 13 W&Ws for R268/269. Now that's disgusting. Who are these people?

by Anonymousreply 281August 29, 2020 9:29 AM

He's doing it himself, r281. All the alt-right trolls do it, it's why you see the pro-Trump dipshits, anti-trans assholes and Meghan Markle hating lunatics with 50 likes each.

These trolls used to use their sockpuppets to FF people and threads into disappearing, but when that was taken away they took to WWing themselves to make it look like a bunch of people agree with them.

by Anonymousreply 282August 29, 2020 9:33 AM

This news made me genuinely sad. He had just achieved his dreams

by Anonymousreply 283August 29, 2020 9:53 AM

It's just incredible he was able to work so much while he was ill. I knew someone who struggled with colon cancer for 3 1/2 years and he had long downtimes where he couldn't do much of anything because of the treatments and surgeries.

by Anonymousreply 284August 29, 2020 9:56 AM

What a shock...his career was just taking flight.

People were previously suspecting he was on drugs because he didn't do press for Da 5 Bloods and he was photograped looking sick.

by Anonymousreply 285August 29, 2020 9:59 AM

We had several who insisted it was just an eating disorder or rampant veganism, R285. We always get that type on threads about sick celebrities, though.

by Anonymousreply 286August 29, 2020 10:00 AM

He better won't steal my final In Memoriam spot at next year's Oscars! Otherwise I'll sue!

by Anonymousreply 287August 29, 2020 11:04 AM

I remember when he posted a video on Instagram looking very thin and people went in on him in the comments. Making fun of him, calling him all kinds of names ... social media can be awful sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 288August 29, 2020 11:17 AM

Marvel, call me.

by Anonymousreply 289August 29, 2020 11:25 AM

Terrible.

by Anonymousreply 290August 29, 2020 12:07 PM

I never saw the movie, know nothing about him beyond that he played BP and even I'm sad about this because it is absolutely tragic to be relatively young and to have finally have success in an industry that's hard enough to break into, but to do so as a minority is even harder. It's genuinely sad to see a life cut short no matter who it is. He suffered privately and never felt the need to publicize it. It's just so tragic.

It's not a bad thing to feel sad even if it is a stranger - shockingly, it makes one human. I don't see why you feel compelled to analyze it like it's the abnormal reaction. The only aspect that I find cringe-worthy is when some of the eulogies are way over the top.

by Anonymousreply 291August 29, 2020 12:11 PM

R269 is my stalker guys. That is the “ a” troll who goes on every thread to detail it and cause drama. He also is the person who got in contact with Harrison and told him about the threads here.

I told you all, his obsession with me stems from his racism. He can’t stand to see a person of color who doesn’t bow down and take his shit. He hates that I have diverse groups etc. he gets livid every time I mention a white man as attractive etc. because no white man would want me etc.

He also has OVER 30 ACCOUNTS. I have explained this to you many times and you all keep ignoring this. He gives himself upvotes and uses them to FF others to silence them.

by Anonymousreply 297August 29, 2020 12:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 298August 29, 2020 12:36 PM

R269 IS a cancer. And the seven parasites who liked his post (unless it was himself which wouldn't be surprising), should've died instead. Disgusting cockroaches.

by Anonymousreply 299August 29, 2020 12:36 PM

I find something to admire in, so far, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o and Ryan Coogler remaining quiet. Not every reaction, or for that matter, non-reaction, to a person's death needs be publicly disseminated. Some would argue that a private reaction is the most meaningful.

Perhaps all 3 will publicly comment, but, if not, that's their choice to keep their reactions to themselves and I write this as one who loves to read all the public tributes to Chadwick Boseman.

by Anonymousreply 300August 29, 2020 12:37 PM

And people like r269 are why I speak against NYC transplants. He is one. He lives in Manhattan, grew up in Midwest. A white man. He is middle aged. He voted Trump and donates to racist organizations.

In the past someone like him would avoid a place like NYC. Now they seem to it. Says a lot about what’s happened to NYC. This is why I take issue with white transplants.

I am born and raised here and never had many altercations with White people until adulthood, and almost any time I dealt with racism etc. it was from someone who transplanted here. Every time.

by Anonymousreply 301August 29, 2020 12:38 PM

R300 they will most likely release a statement for the fans but they are also taking this hardest. They worked closest with him and were on that Black Panther roller coaster with him, which he led.

by Anonymousreply 302August 29, 2020 12:43 PM

I keep trying to post it but keep failing.

The most touching thing I've read in all of this is a text that he sent Jason Gad. Gad tweeted a screen shot last night.

To be able to compose that ass you're dying...What an amazing soul.

by Anonymousreply 303August 29, 2020 12:50 PM

This hits especially hard for me. I’m just a year younger and also have advanced colon cancer. I’m on treatment but it’s pretty terrifying as once it’s spread it could pop up anywhere. It’s very rare in younger people but it does happen and it needs to be treated more seriously. I had symptoms for at least 4 years and my doctor basically ignored them. People shouldn’t live in fear of cancer, but always be vigilant and get checked, no matter your age.

by Anonymousreply 304August 29, 2020 12:56 PM

You know, they say it isn't hereditary, but My uncle's wife, her whole family was wiped out by Cancer. She and her sisters all got breast cancer, her mother died of colon cancer, her brothers died of prostate cancer. THis was back in the early 70's, late 60's. Then her daughter and her son, my cousins died of it.

Now, the children of the cousins who died, who are my age, three of them have it. Two women and a man. But I also believe environmental and lifestyle factors are part of it. I think your diet and exercise routine, alcohol, fast food, fatty foods, etc. a lot of stuff we eat is bad for us, and usually it' when we're young that it fucks us up.

I had some contractors at my house last year, and I was struck how unhealthy they were eating. We were having a new roof put on, and they'd show up at 8 AM drinking a huge bottle of soda! They lived off of McDonalds and the other fast food brands. Pizza, french fries, lots of grease and salt, and sugar. All they cared about was if it was cheap and filling.

R304, what were your symptoms? Did your doctor provide any diagnosis prior to discovery of colon cancer?? Did you request a colonoscopy?

I am asking because you are younger than any population believed to be at true risk for CRC. I think it is important for others to know how aggressively they should advocate for themselves if they are experiencing symptoms. And when it is necessary to find a new doctor.

by Anonymousreply 337August 29, 2020 4:45 PM

R308 main symptom is bleeding when you go to the toilet. It was initially sporadic, and each time I thought I should go to the doctor again it stopped, so I didn’t. Latterly it got more and more often until it was virtually everyday. I also was anemic, but the doctor just treated the symptom rather than the cause by giving me iron tablets. I should have been more proactive in getting to the root of it, but I’ve always been a bit too laid back. The problem with colon cancer is by the time you get symptoms it’s usually pretty advanced.

by Anonymousreply 339August 29, 2020 5:07 PM

R327 R329 just posted symptoms above. I’m happy to help raise awareness. My doctor wasn’t expecting cancer at all, it wasn’t until I saw another doctor that I was given an urgent appointment with a specialist who arranged a colonoscopy. Even on the day of the colonoscopy, the doctor there said it’s likely nothing much as I’m young and fit and have a healthy diet and lifestyle. There’s no family history of it, but I did have another form of cancer when I was a kid, which probably predisposed me.

The average diagnosis age of colon cancer is about 70. Which is why it can be hard to get a doctor to investigate if you’re under 50. But from what I’ve heard there are quite a lot of younger people getting it now. I think age 50 is when they start screening. I suggest that anyone takes bleeding seriously. It is most likely something minor like piles or whatever. But the doctor should diagnose that. The good thing is it’s a slow growing cancer and is highly treatable when it’s in the initial stages. I just wish I hadn’t been so laid back about it. But I’m doing all I can to fight it.

by Anonymousreply 367August 29, 2020 9:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 368August 29, 2020 9:28 PM

If 2020 wanted to take a black celebrity, it could have had Kanye.

or Van Jones!

According to the American Journal of Pathology: African Americans have the highest incidence and mortality rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) of any ethnic group in the United States. Although some of these disparities can be explained by differences in access to care, cancer screening, and other socioeconomic factors, disparities remain after adjustment for these factors....In particular, African Americans are more often diagnosed with CRC at an earlier age and with more advanced disease

So the previous poster who was called a racist is NOT a racist - it is true that AA disproportionately get colon cancer and one assumes this guy had access to decent medical care, so there is clearly a genetic predisposition.

White people watching that scene not getting why all of the hell over the years that black people have endured, all of the indignity has led to what goes on today. And they watch even today, a white terrorist gets handed water or a cheeseburger after murdering people, but a black guy gets six shots to the back.

by Anonymousreply 376August 29, 2020 10:28 PM

R376 Yes. Out of the thousands of misconduct cases the CCRB, the agency that handles police misconduct complaints, has received, only 9 led to firings. 9. That's it. This is why dirty cops like continue to be employed by the NYPD...because they are protected. Look at how he was saying his cop uncle "knows who I am and where I live." 1) He doesn't know who I am and 2) doesn't seem to understand how fucking psychotic that statement is. This is part of the failings of NYC to reign in the police. If our government won't do it, like Chadwick wanted in his lifetime, then at least we can call out here and tell him to fuck off. He has a tremendous amount of nerve posting on this thread, considering his background of abuse. He is shameless.

How long are most film shoots? 4-6 weeks? An action movie would have involved more prep (but depending on use of stunt doubles...)

If people want to know risk factors for colorectal cancer, one is high consumption of processed meats - particularly bacon, sausages, lunch meats, etc. red meat (beef, pork, lamb), especially fatty red meats, grilled meats. Foods that are considered helpful are plant-based foods, leafy greens, (kale, collards, cabbage, etc), high fiber diets (whole grains and legumes). The Mediterranean diet is considered helpful. Vitamin D (mostly from natural exposure to sunlight) is considered helpful. Obesity is a big risk factor. Physical activity is considered helpful. But in the end, as in every other health problem, there are inherited genes that might make a person more susceptible, and there are also environmental exposures that are difficult to control.

On a related note to Chadwick, from the article at R349.
Over 300 Black Hollywood figures—including stars like Viola Davis, [bold] Chadwick Boseman, [/bold] and Billy Porter—have signed a letter spearheaded by Insecure’s Kendrick Sampson demanding that the industry [bold] divest from the police. [/bold] The letter was published Tuesday in Variety and comes with a list of demands, including committing to not using police officers on sets and for events, [bold] divesting from anti-Black content that glorifies police brutality and corruption, [/bold] and investing in anti-racist projects. The letter also demands that Hollywood companies recruit and support Black professionals at studios, agencies, and more.
“Historically and currently, [bold] Hollywood encourages the epidemic of police violence and culture of anti-Blackness,”[/bold] the statement reads. “The way that Hollywood and mainstream media have contributed to the criminalization of Black people, the misrepresentation of the legal system, and [bold] the glorification of police corruption and violence [/bold] has had dire consequences on Black lives.”

Let's honor one of the last requests Chadwick made in his lifetime and divest from police here on the DL. Ban , please. It's what Chadwick would have wanted.

R233 - John David Washington looks ancient. Chadwick was in his 40s (very late 30s when he did BP and the Avengers picture) but looked ten years younger. His body was amazing in BP. Those pecs...mmm.

John David looks like he's 55 and kind of looks goofy. Not a superhero. The BP role will either go to Michael or the British chick who plays the sister (Leitia? Forget her name).

by Anonymousreply 404August 30, 2020 1:28 AM

Rumor is Cynthia Erivo has been offered the role.

by Anonymousreply 405August 30, 2020 1:29 AM

by Anonymousreply 406August 30, 2020 1:42 AM

John David just isn’t handsome. He looks nothing like his father, who was gorgeous in his youth.

John David doesn’t have a face for films. He only gets them because of daddy.

Thanks for sharing. I've regularly had blood in my stool for over 15 years. I had my first colonoscopy at age 36 -- I was so convinced I had CRC and was going to die I started estate planning prior to the procedure. The colonoscopy was clean. I was told hemmoroids. Symptoms persisted. I had another colonoscopy about 7 years after -- still nothing. I had a third just two years ago. Diagnosis is IBS but treatment hasn't stopped bleeding. I still worry.

JFC, could and his stalker please shut up and get off this thread? No one cares and your ramblings are irrelevant to the thread topic.

r340, you are correct. Many younger people with CRC are not diagnosed until their cancer is too advanced to cure because their doctors don't take their complaints seriously. IMO, screening should start well before 50 and anybody with rectal bleeding or a family history should qualify for a colonoscopy. I know of a bunch of people diagnosed in their 20s or 30s and even a couple of kids with CRC (though I think that's got to be some weird genetic situation).

I remember a Doctor saying that white women are more likely to get breast cancer than anyone else in the world, with black women being the least likely to get it, however, black women are the most likely to die from breast cancer while Asian women are the least likely to die from it.

So Black women do not get breast cancer as often but when they do it’s more likely to kill them.

R423, a lot of these cancers are genetic. Especially when the person gets cancer young. I have a relative whose child got cancer at age two. That’s definitely genetic.

The older you get, the more likely it is you’ll get cancer generally. If you get it under fifty or so, it’s likely either it’s environmental or hereditary. If you’re getting it at ninety, either it’s environmental or your body is just shot.
I'll never understand the dichotomy of people who've suffered from discrimination for their innate traits then doing the same thing by discriminating against others in the same vein.

You should read a book in psychology 101. It's the most common thing for humans discriminated against, to engage in the same type of behavior with someone else in order to cope with it and/or as a response for protection or asserting dominance they lost.

by Anonymousreply 439August 30, 2020 5:19 AM

R423 black women have less access to proper medical care. That’s what R420 isn’t saying. They are diagnosed less (probably lower access to screening also) and once diagnosed are probably diagnosed later because of poorer treatment options and then not given as much help to beat the disease. That’s what happens in a country where if you don’t have money you can’t see a doctor.

R132 and others thank you for mentioning Lynch Syndrome. My husband has it. He gets a colonoscopy every year (is not 50 yet) and got the genetic test when his cousin was diagnosed with colon cancer( he was lucky they got it in time). My husband’s paternal grandmother died from it and his father did as well, his aunt had it (but was caught in time). Lynch Syndrome also leaves men at a high risk for kidney and bladder cancer. Women who have lynch syndrome not only have a high risk of colon, kidney, and bladder cancers but also uterine and ovarian cancer. It is usually recommended that woman with lynch syndrome should get a hysterectomy once she knows she’s done having children.

All that being said, rest in power Chadwick. Far too young to be gone. Whether or not you have a history of colon cancer in your family, if you don’t feel right or your stools look bloody ( black) see a doctor, better to have it checked and be nothing!

I love what Stevie Wonder said about him:

"The thing about it is, Wakanda will live forever. He is that character," Wonder said, referencing Boseman's lead "Black Panther" role. "His motivation is something that can encourage people in every corner of the earth. He made a decision to put his purpose in front of the suffering and pain.

"He didn’t take us to a pity party — he put us in his purpose party. That’s what we need, and that’s what he showed us."
Elizabeth Olsen deactivated her account on instagram because fans keep asking her to comment on Chadwick's death.

by Anonymousreply 455August 30, 2020 4:16 PM

Great words from Stevie Wonder.! Very inspiring.

by Anonymousreply 456August 30, 2020 4:16 PM

R450, what the movie accomplished was in fact groundbreaking whether you saw it or not or liked it or not. I never saw it (superhero movies aren't my thing). "Morons for years saying how black movies or the stars being black don't do well because Asia blah blah blah." Meanwhile, Kidman constantly got work despite being BO poison and people like Will Smith have movies that are hits all over the world. Hollywood has ignored a large part of the world for too long and this movie's box office proved the racist idiots wrong. Just like makeup companies used to make limited shades so that many black people had no options. Companies that have catered to them are the ones seeing profits. White people have underestimated the black market for too long.

Showing a single movie for a couple of hours for one night to honor him is not a reason to start being an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 457August 30, 2020 4:53 PM

I think it was tacky of Stevie to even introduce "pity party" as a concept. It's like those dickheads who wax lyrical about "fighting" cancer, being "positive." As Christopher Hitchens said, the medical staff are the fighters, the cancer patient is the battleground. There was a way to commend Chad's sense of purpose without introducing pity as a weapon.

They were so kick-ass!

I loved them! Beautiful and strong. Wow.
What makes it all sadder is now we will never get a proper sequel.

by Anonymousreply 496August 31, 2020 3:54 PM

R493

I’d agree, but we shouldn’t forget about Blade and Wesley Snipes. He was historic.

by Anonymousreply 497August 31, 2020 3:58 PM

R497 those films did fine but nothing of the impact Black Panther did. That is what makes BP special. Blade was still seen as a “black film” while BP was treated the same as all the other Marvel films starring white people.

by Anonymousreply 498August 31, 2020 4:03 PM

No it wasn't. It was sold as a black movie, as if it was a Motown (when Berry Gordy still owned it) movie production.

by Anonymousreply 499August 31, 2020 4:04 PM

R499 not at all. Wtf.

by Anonymousreply 500August 31, 2020 4:05 PM

BP and Chadwick had a major impact on millions of little boys and girls, and many kids at heart. I remember how many little Black Panthers I saw trick or treating after the movie came out.

by Anonymousreply 501August 31, 2020 4:07 PM

Not just black children though. Like my friend pointed out, a lot of white boys love BP too.

by Anonymousreply 502August 31, 2020 4:09 PM

R498 I enjoyed the Blade films more than BP, but that probably has more to do with the age I was when I first saw it than the quality of the films. Superhero films just don't hold the same appeal to me now as they once did.

"Black Panther," Chadwick Boseman tribute score for ABC:

Before becoming a film star, Chadwick Boseman was a playwright on the rise:

R491, you said it yourself. BP was a cultural phenomenon. It wasn’t like he was in We Bought a Zoo.

by Anonymousreply 506August 31, 2020 4:45 PM

It dawned on me after hearing how all the BP stars, and many of the Avengers, were available for the ABC special on Boseman last night (a poster upthread mentioned E Olson being a part) - that's possibly why so many of them didn't comment on soc media or publicly about his passing, they were saving their 1st commentary for the televised special. A request from Disney/ABC perhaps?

I know Chris Evans and Pratt commented early on, but most of the BP castmates (MBJ, Lupita, Winston Duke etc) had made no comment until last night. Director Ryan Coogler himself only released his lengthy comment on his Ig just a couple of hrs before last night's showing.

by Anonymousreply 507August 31, 2020 4:47 PM

You can’t possibly compare BP to Blade, I mean, c’mon.

Blade was about a freaking vampire! Hardly a subject matter for little kids to watch.

I did enjoy Blade, Wesley is a total bad-ass in the role but I saw it when I was older. It was rated R as well. So not many little kids saw it.

by Anonymousreply 508August 31, 2020 4:55 PM

With all due respect to Black Panther, the movie version of Spawn was 1997 starring Michael Jai White. So that came before both Blade (1998) and Black Panther (2018).

by Anonymousreply 509August 31, 2020 5:00 PM

BP was PG13 as I think most Marvel movies, these are not for little children and they should not be on the theater.

by Anonymousreply 510August 31, 2020 5:18 PM

I think most of the admiration is in the fact that he worked while battling this in private and the fact that he would probably be embarrassed by all of the attention now. That he felt no need for some People cover story announcing "I'm battling Cancer" is probably why most people are so saddened by his loss. He was rare in that he wasn't an attention-seeking celebrity and that it happened to him while he was having huge success.

by Anonymousreply 511August 31, 2020 5:52 PM

I'm sorry but if I had stage 3 cancer, I would not be acting. I'm sure all that stress and long hours at work wasn't good for his illness and didn't help.

by Anonymousreply 512August 31, 2020 5:56 PM

Good thing he didn't have you at his ear.

by Anonymousreply 513August 31, 2020 6:02 PM

I’m sure when the insurance company reps heard he had cancer all through that shoot, they thought they dodged a bullet. What if he had gotten too sick to work in the middle of that very high budget movie? They would have lost millions having to recast and reshoot his part. And they would have had to pay all the other actors to reshoot their parts and a lot of them might not have been available to reshoot again for months if not years. And most of those other actors were highly paid and in demand. They would have had to sign another contract to reshoot and gotten paid twice.

I know everyone is thinking only of how brave he was, but the studio would have lost their shirt. I wouldn’t be surprised if the studio adds more screening in the future, or adds something else to the actors’ contracts for reshoots in case of illness. Which means that would drive up the price even more. Does movie insurance cover a guy who already knew he was sick and didn’t disclose it?

by Anonymousreply 514August 31, 2020 6:27 PM

The studio doesn't care about what didn't hurt them.

by Anonymousreply 515August 31, 2020 6:37 PM

I’m wondering about the insurance as well.

Did he keep it from them? Or was he cast in the role and wasn’t diagnosed yet?

I’m thinking things might change in regard to insurance and actors in movies. Don’t know anything about the subject so who knows.

by Anonymousreply 516August 31, 2020 7:15 PM

Why would things change? Boseman is not the first person to hide his illness.

by Anonymousreply 517August 31, 2020 7:16 PM

For Boseman to receive treatment AND to be able to work, there had to be co-ordination going on, even if it was hush hush. Blocks of time were given to treatment and, one would think, recuperation. And blocks of time were given to shooting movies.

by Anonymousreply 518August 31, 2020 7:18 PM

His first appearance as Black Panther was in CA: Civil War, which premiered in the summer of 2016. That means he was cast and filmed before he received his diagnosis.

by Anonymousreply 519August 31, 2020 7:22 PM
Boseman is not the first person to hide his illness.

Tell me about it.

by Anonymousreply 520August 31, 2020 7:24 PM

R519 he was cast late 2013.

Again, they don’t check your fucking colon before filming a movie. Many have hid illnesses.

by Anonymousreply 521August 31, 2020 7:29 PM

The admiration isn’t that it’s the FIRST black led superhero ever. It’s that it’s the FIRST black led superhero film to have an almost all black cast and black director and still have a $200 million dollar budget. It’s the FIRST film with all black faces to be released all over the world and bring in millions.

Spawn didn’t do that. Spawn FLOPPED. The first two Blades did good for their R rating but neither did tremendous.

by Anonymousreply 522August 31, 2020 7:31 PM

He did more movies than BP, so "he was cast in 2013" doesn't apply across the last four years of work.

by Anonymousreply 523August 31, 2020 7:31 PM
an almost all black cast and black director

What about the crew?

by Anonymousreply 524August 31, 2020 7:32 PM

On an unrelated note, Winston Duke was so fucking hot in Black Panther.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 525August 31, 2020 7:39 PM

R507 no. Winston Duke, Forrest Whitaker and Angela Bassett are the only BP cast who did a snippet for the special. Lupita and Michael B Jordan have been silent. Letitia Wright tweeted “this hurts. this really hurts” yesterday. She hasn’t given an official statement.

And Danai Gurira tweeted out something yesterday but she also wasn’t in the special.

I think they should give out posthumous Oscars to actors with an incredible body of work, that never won especially since he never was even nominated. Such a phenomenal actor taken from us too soon. RIP.

by Anonymousreply 527August 31, 2020 11:12 PM

R527 And the Oscar for Best Dead Actor or Actress with an Outstanding Lifetime Body of Work goes to....

by Anonymousreply 528August 31, 2020 11:18 PM

To be honest, I hope Lupita and Michael B. never speak about this publicly if they want to. It's such a strange ritual for people to demand some social media statement when someone dies. The fact that they haven't said anything tells me all I need to know about how they're feeling and what Chadwick meant to them. Their grief doesn't need to be aired for public consumption.

by Anonymousreply 529September 1, 2020 12:47 AM

Lupita and MBJ are closeted. They'll speak about it, just to keep the conversation off their singledom.

by Anonymousreply 530September 1, 2020 1:04 AM

If I didn't want to speak publicly about someone who died, my only statement would be: "Respectfully, I say this: It is not for those who don't know me to decide how I grieve for those who did."

by Anonymousreply 531September 1, 2020 1:42 AM

Michael B. Jordan waited to say it profoundly.

Hunny in my neighborhood, which is admittedly a "Blue" neighborhood, we saw little white kids doing the "Wakanda forever" thing. It was lovely. That was one of the true immeasurable impacts of BP. It united all of us culturally.

by Anonymousreply 534September 1, 2020 5:21 PM

R533, his birthday is in November. You sure you weren't looking at his death date and thinking that was his birth date?

by Anonymousreply 535September 1, 2020 5:32 PM

R534 yup. My friend was saying “not only black people loved Black Panther and T’Challa, many of us white bro’s did too” lol.

He meant it in a sweet way.

by Anonymousreply 536September 1, 2020 6:54 PM

Ugh r535 I was.

by Anonymousreply 537September 1, 2020 7:45 PM

You know what makes me sad? I have read a lot of tributes for Chadwick, all heartfelt and deserved. But the only white guy I noticed paying tribute to him, was Harrison Ford who worked with him in 42. Oh. And his Avengers co-stars.

by Anonymousreply 538September 1, 2020 7:51 PM

Are you white?

by Anonymousreply 539September 1, 2020 7:54 PM

I'm shocked that nobody at Disney knew about his illness

"Many are left wondering how Boseman kept his diagnosis under wraps while shooting a film with a colossal budget like the $200 million Black Panther in 2017 (the film opened the following year and went on to earn $1.35 billion worldwide and was nominated for a best picture Oscar). But film finance attorney Schuyler Moore says a Marvel star wouldn’t likely require a medical examination for insurance purposes.

“Big studios don’t often [get] completion bonds,” says Moore. “They are more prevalent in the indie filmmaking world. Sometimes, the big studios will look to insure for a particular actor, but they usually have a particular reason for doing so. Otherwise, studios will just shoulder the risk [of sickness or death].”"

by Anonymousreply 554September 3, 2020 3:10 PM

I understand the reactions. He electrified audiences with Black Panther. Then people discovered he was also an intelligent, thoughtful guy as well as a talented actor. And he was NICE. He was authentic. He did an outstanding job as Jackie Robinson and his James Brown was incredible. He was the "Go to" guy. Black Panther made him seem invincible. So to discover he was battling cancer for four years is shocking. No one expected this.

But here's the thing. They said he continued to work all thru "countless surgeries and chemo" And this is the part I do not buy. Either the guy didn't take as many treatment opportunities as he could have, or people knew and kept quiet. I have a suspicion it's a little of both.

I 've known people who battled cancer. They did radiation. They did a round of chemo, a long, tough slog. They went into remission. When the cancer came back less that two years later, it was more aggressive. My friend was asked if he wanted to try more chemo. They told him he was terminal, but maybe he could buy himself a few months longer with the chemo.

He walked away. He said it wasn't worth it. He'd rather just go into palliative care when the time came, and live his life as well as he could until his body failed. I wonder if Chadwick made similar choices. And I wonder if his agent, manager, PA, etc. kept it quiet out of respect to him.

He was so famous, it would have been a circus for him if it had become public. Now, we will remember him for his work instead of sitting in the bleachers watching him battle cancer. I'm glad he wasn't known, finally for his illness, but for his work.

by Anonymousreply 555September 3, 2020 4:13 PM

When I think about all the energy that human beings put into hating one another for the stupidest of reasons, I have to wonder if we put all that energy into doing other things like finding cures for Cancer, ALS, MS, Covid etc. what this world would be like.

by Anonymousreply 556September 3, 2020 4:23 PM

R556 Be thankful they are spending their time doing useless shit instead of participating in anything important. Those people are so stupid that they taint everything they touch and they need to be as far away from STEM fields as possible. Trust me there's already an alarming amount of stupid people working in STEM who are actively harming scientific progress with their stupidity and bunk research.

That's what I thought too. He wanted to strike the iron while it's hot and put his cancer treatment on the backburner. Very sad, he seemed like a great guy, talented, good looking, charismatic. He had it all.

Marvel is saying that they didn't know about his illness until the day of his death. That's got to be bullshit right? No way they wouldn't have wondered why he was so gaunt.

by Anonymousreply 560September 4, 2020 5:20 AM

R560, I’m sure they took notice, but he might have implied back to them it was for a movie, or it was because of a vegan diet. If that’s the case, there wasn’t much Marvel could do under the circumstances. Maybe they put contingency plans in place—who knows?

by Anonymousreply 561September 4, 2020 2:08 PM

I think I would make the same decision R558. If I was sick but had the opportunity of a lifetime to make my mark, I too would take it and postpone treatment.

by Anonymousreply 562September 6, 2020 1:37 AM

I wonder what he was thinking when he made that video for Instagram earlier in the year. It seems odd that he thought he could show himself looking like that to the world and that there wouldn't be a media frenzy. I expect he had strong powers of denial.

by Anonymousreply 563September 6, 2020 1:42 AM

Try fighting stage 4 cancer for four years without strong powers of denial R563. Why project some kind of extra psychological illness onto the man? Some die whimpering in the darkness, others think they are the only ones who ever had a disease, so they make it a continual story and pity party and others keep working - maybe because the opportunity to share their great passion came just at the worst time. He was given golden opportunity to share his beautiful gifts. Performers know what they have inside. They want to show and share it. A different breed. Don't be obsessed with his body's health. Should he have stayed at home dying on the same timeline? He wasn't trying to become a hero or international inspiration of dignity and grace because he worked while living and dying with cancer. He just wanted to represent the best of his talent while portraying some inspirational and complex Black characters, in the movies. And so he did. It's kind of an amazement. He wasn't free of pain or perfect in his heroism. Not even all that well liked. It's okay to whimper in the corner. But a performer wants to perform. His mission was complete. Wakanda forever.
