He slipped on some wet steps at a friends house and broke his neck. The friend (a woman) asked him to not reveal where the accident happened and he made up the story about the motorcycle crash when reporters noticed the surgical scar on his neck.

He was not addicted to pills because the doctors refused to give him a prescription for painkillers. So he took measures into his own hands and started drinking to numb the constant pain and became an alcoholic. After a couple of DUIs and being arrested for threatening a bartender with a knife for refusing to serve him alcohol he was sentenced to in-patient rehab and has been sober ever since.

The first season got him close with a mob boss and in the finale when ***SPOILER*** the boss found out Wahl's an undercover cop ***SPOILER END*** they stared each other a long time with Nights in White Satin playing in the background. Now THAT was homoerotic, or homoromantic rather, in many ways, although obviously deep feelings between men are normal everywhere. However this was one of the few shows and especially this particular relationship and the end of it that showed how close straight men can get.

I don't know how many times I watched that scene. I was like 16 and 17 and I was so in love with Ken Wahl's character. Back in the day there wasn't practically any positive portrayals of gay men in entertainment and this show filled the void, although obviously you had to read between the lines. The Nights in White Satin scene however made it totally clear how close these guys were.

The second season had Kevin Spacey as the big baddie. I can only imagine what happened behind the scenes since it's hard to imagine Kevin being able to keep his mittens off prime beef Wahl was back then. Then again Wahl came off as a violent brute and Spacey probably knew where to draw the line.

He was sexy for a hot second, but his looks rapidly went downhill. He was also supposed to be a one of the biggest pricks in Hollywood. His treatment of Bette Midler has been widely noted. His career basically ended after Wiseguy.

He was a living doll. Streamed the Wise Guys series this year.

R40 The Steelgrave storyline was the best. The show kind of peaked early because of that, and never really recovered. I wish they'd found a way to extend Sharkey's character into the 2nd season. The chemistry between Sharkey and Wahl was fabulous.

I didn't care for the Spacey episodes. Spacey hammed it up too much and Joan Severence was awful. Wahl even said in an interview that he was against her getting the part because she couldn't act.
