Vairst Leddy reveals newly “redesigned” Rose Garden
by Anonymous | reply 149 | August 24, 2020 1:09 PM |
She had the whole thing bulldozed down to the ground and put in all new plantings.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 22, 2020 3:23 PM |
The words “stern” and “militaristic” come to mind, much like her fashion choices. Everything is tightly buttoned up and belted and sternly tailored there too.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 22, 2020 3:26 PM |
Her rigorous intellectual commitment to architectural training has come to full flower.
She should present her dedication speech four times, switching between each of the four languages in which she is fluent.
She should find a way to incorporate that cause dear to her heart: the Be Best campaign.
Brava to ex-model Knauss!

by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 22, 2020 3:51 PM |
She wants to forget the White House, forget the unhappiness that Trump's presidency became for her and Barron, and send a big Screw You to the American public. What better way than to destroy a piece of the White House grounds. Thank God she didn't attempt to do anything to the House itself.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 22, 2020 3:57 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 22, 2020 4:03 PM |
The boxwood diagonals were not calculated correctly. The first from the steps should be the same length as the others. It should hit the borders of boxwood in the corner. This is sloppy and the professional gardeners involved talentless. Also, I like a rose garden to include trellised roses.

by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 22, 2020 4:15 PM |
The grass is sod and it's going to be expensive because its sitting over a mass of cables and electricity.
I think it was wise to take out the fruit trees. But they needed to be replaced by trellises to give height dimension to the garden. There is no height now but that is because they want to include the side space in staging for press conferences.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 22, 2020 4:16 PM |
I design rose garden without roses because is not only modern thing to do, is also good way to adapt to ugly new wairld that my hooseband design. I design so that the person, he walks down promenade and then at end, trapdoor opens and he falls into dark corridor with dead twigs illuminated by unnatural mechanical flames. I always like these movie Weezard of the Oz and want to make roseless rose garden dungeon like that, like when stupid little whore Dorothy approaches weezard. At end of corridor, as you can see in peekture here, is fiery pile of rocks shaped like cone. Visitor to rose garden approaches and is then, how you say, emolated and vaporized. We then spreenkle visitor ashes around White House to keep lowly maids busy. Is very creative, is my vision alone, based on dreams of my hooseband.

My original concept was lady garden with lady roses and shining orbs, but historical architectural review committee tells me, ‘No, Melania, this is too European a concept.’ But they say it is classy idea! Maybe during hooseband’s second term, or maybe his fourth or when Barron runs country I will realize vision, but for now I go for classical American zigzag bush.

It's not so terrible. Everyone is comparing the Jackie O garden during Spring with the late summer garden of today. Jackie O's garden this time of year wasn't so colorful and was rather blah looking. It's the third picture down.

It really does look like they just swapped out the flowers, replacing exuberant/garish brightly colored ones with a subdued pastel color scheme. It’s not the most horrible thing. But it is pretty lifeless looking. Of course, perennial plants take 3-5 years to establish themselves before they really look how they are intended when planted as a garden. It might be nice. It’s just hard not to see evil in everything this family does because they are evil.
She did wear that “I DON’T REALLY CARE DO U?” jacket as she was boarding a plane to inspect imprisoned children. She does not get a pass for anything. Never. She should leave the country.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | August 22, 2020 9:04 PM |
Going to be destroyed by this, but here goes.
It's better. The stone edging treatment formalizes the space and got rid of that shovel-cut edge. It looks much more elegant, and the trees gone really make the colonnade stand out. It really is a vast improvement. I am sure the planting bends will be s colorful as required, but it really is an improvement.
This will be the only good thing that will come out of this asshole's Presidency, an improved Rose Garden.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 22, 2020 9:06 PM |
I agree, r66. And, again, the color came from the tulips and blooming crab apple trees. So, really, the color lasted for about 2 weeks in the spring. The rest of the time the garden was dull with only greenery.

I agree with those who say it's an improvement. It was lovely before, but I just think it looks cleaner, sleeker. The lighter flowers seem a better match with the building, and the columned area is so beautiful-- why cover it up? It's not like they chopped the trees down; they're just being moved to a different area.
And finally, I think the limestone walkways look great, and provide more access to the disabled.

by Anonymous | reply 115 | August 23, 2020 5:48 PM |
To be fair to the Vairst Leddy, we are not seeing it in full bloom like the spring examples of years past. It's definitely more minimalist than I expected, but I suspect Trump's the one that is all in for the gilding and gold, that might not be Melania's personal taste. Her Christmas choices are so bizarre. I'm trying to think where she is getting her inspiration from. They are not even crazy, neuvo riche tacky, but just completely dark and strange, almost frightening. I'm not just saying this b/c she is Trumps wife and. I always travel to Europe over Christmas and like to see the decor of the best hotels/stores. I've never seen the period blood trees nor that forest of doom in the example upthread so I can't just give her a "she's European" pass.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | August 23, 2020 5:58 PM |

R72 Oh, Melania, gurl, I love yo crazy ass!
by Anonymous | reply 118 | August 23, 2020 6:03 PM |
It’ll take time for new roses to reach their potential—if they’re left in place, they’ll probably be gorgeous in three to five years.
But while the muted color palette is pleasant (and honestly more to my taste than vibrant colors mixed into a gaudy display), the renovation really sucked the life out of the garden.
And as ridiculous as this statement may seem, I am really put off that the White House whitewashed the rose garden at this time. The area outside of the White House was just named Black Lives Matter Plaza because Trump is overly enabling white supremacy. He employs white supremacists. For her part, ‘elania has not said vile racist things publicly, but she has proved to us that she sends a lot of nonverbal messages symbolically. The “I don’t care” jacket. The British colonial pith hat while touring African former British colonies. *Maybe* it’s just coincidental or subliminal that the garden has been de-saturated and filled with pale, mostly white flowers, but they have such a horrible track record of indecency that I would not be at all surprised if it’s intentional and symbolic to the Nazis in their orbit.

I actually like that you can see the building's columns. It makes the building look more majestic.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | August 23, 2020 8:16 PM |
The idea of the White House’s architecture is that it is supposed to represent “the people’s house” and be relatively small-scale and humble, as opposed to the palaces of European royalty. It’s not supposed to be ‘majestic.’
by Anonymous | reply 122 | August 23, 2020 8:28 PM |
There aren't jet black roses but there are roses that look quite black. She should have planted a rainbow rose garden in honor of diversity from Black, to white, to the colours in between.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | August 23, 2020 8:41 PM |
So, it's majestic nevertheless, r122. If they wanted understated they could've not included columns.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | August 23, 2020 8:53 PM |
I'll only commend her for not going with the Trump family's REAL taste - which is obscene to anyone with vision.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | August 23, 2020 8:54 PM |
R122 that's not true at all. The White House is one of the most "grand" classical mansions in American history.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | August 23, 2020 8:56 PM |
The other thing that r122 forgets is the White House isn't built in the style (Federalist) that was prevalent for the times. Federalist architecture is far less grand than the style of the WH. So if understated is what they were going for then it would have been built more like Independence Hall.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | August 23, 2020 9:04 PM |
It wasn’t intended to be palatial. Neoclassical columns are a nod to Roman architecture, representative of the kind of republic that the founders had in mind. But they—and perhaps most especially George Washington—were opposed to the idea of American royalty, and the president is supposed to work as chief executive on behalf of the people, not as a ruler over the people.
“About two hundred years ago, when the United States was a brand-new country, people began to talk about where the president should live. Should the president live in the North or the South? Should the president's house be a palace, like kings live in, or a simpler house?
While Congress debated what to build and where to build it, our first president, George Washington, lived in three houses. The first two were in New York City. The third was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Finally, Washington decided to compromise. He picked a patch of land on the Potomac River.
Both Maryland and Virginia gave land for the new capital. The land was on the border of the North and the South. At that time, there were no western states! George Washington named the land the District of Columbia, in honor of Christopher Columbus.
President Washington hired people to plan a new city. Washington, D.C., is one of the only cities in the world that was designed before it was built. First, Benjamin Banneker and Andrew Ellicott made maps of the land. Then Pierre Charles L'Enfant decided where to put the roads. Washington decided to put the Capitol Building on a hill at one end of the city, and the president's house on a hill at the other end.
Next it was time to decide what kind of house to build for the president. Thomas Jefferson suggested having a contest. He advertised the contest in newspapers across the country. A committee picked a simple but elegant design by James Hoban, a young Irish American architect.”

And notice how left-leaning journalists and other liberals immediately went after him for it? Now show me ANY fucking cunt on the right who has ever gone after Trump or his admin. for every racist, xenophobic thing they have ever said or done.

Melania deserves all the criticism in the world for her desecration of the Rose Garden. She totally ruined it but is proud? and the public overwhelmingly hates it
I feel no sympathy for this woman who took part in the birther bullshit against Obama

It’s so rigid and joyless. Are they going to keep it so severely trimmed? There’s no variation in height or texture whatsoever and not a single leaf or twig out of place. How depressing.
Whoever “designed” this has no clue.

R104 Apparently the addition of a paved walkway was mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act because press conferences and signing ceremonies are held there - i.e. it has to be ADA accessible.
But I agree with you that the pathway is quite plain and ugly. They couldn’t have done something with it?

We have a rapidly approaching election.
A bipartisan Senate report just proved Trump’s campaign did collude with Russia.
176,000+ deaths in the U.S. from COVID, and counting.
Anything Melania related or this superficial is a distraction.

It looks like one big cemetery plot. Be best to bury her husband's legacy in.

They pulled out lovely spring blooming trees.
There’s something about seeing trees bloom flowers in the spring that makes you feel human again after a long winter.
Something the Trumps wouldn’t understand
“You want tree? I get you big red tree Shaped like cone. I give you beeg branches we spray paint any color you want. I make them white or silver or gold. Whatever color you like. You will love my genuine artificial trees. “
