Has anyone done the exercises that are suppose to reset ear crystals and alleviate vertigo? Did it work for you? There are four different exercises, which one worked best?
Exercises to move crystals in your ear canal?

The one involving chocolate syrup and an electric carving knife.

Ear crystals. Ear crystals? Ear crystals! Ear crystals; ear crystals. Crystals of the ear.

I have heard of this, but never tried it. Seems kind of sketchy, but I guess if you’re desperate, it couldn’t hurt.

[quote]if you’re desperate, it couldn’t hurt.
Get back to me after you've tried the electric carving knife one r4.

Reset what, now?

I had terrible vertigo after I fractured my skull and they told me it was caused by the crystals in my left ear. First, an ENT "adjusted" them, and that helped some, but I had subsequent adjustments done by physical therapists. I still have vertigo 11 years later, but not nearly as incapacitating as it was after my skull fracture.
If you can have a professional do it, OP, I'd go that route. Frankly, my vertigo was too bad to try to do anything by myself. Hell, it was so bad that when I tried to get out of bed in the morning, the whole room spun like I was drunk. It took 15 minutes for it to go away. I'm much better now.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info and your experiences R8. My doctor said I have vertigo and that it would go away in a short while. It's been months.

What is this?
Is that when the drop earring goes up in the ear?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 20, 2020 10:42 PM |
is this chiropractor stuff?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 20, 2020 10:44 PM |
No. But physical therapists are trained in how to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 20, 2020 10:46 PM |
My boss has this done from time to time. She gets these horrible bouts of vertigo.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 20, 2020 11:28 PM |
I had a horrible case of vertigo last year. I did the exercise where you slowly move your head from one side to the next. It cured the vertigo. Good luck.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 21, 2020 12:06 AM |
Why don’t you try to get the insects that live in there to push the crystals out?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 21, 2020 12:09 AM |
The utricle is a nearby part of the ear. It contains calcium crystals (canaliths) that help it detect movement. Sometimes these crystals detach from the utricle and end up inside the semicircular canals. When these crystals move inside the canals, they may send incorrect signals to your brain about your position.

I’ve had Benign Positional Vertigo—the detached crystal thing that R16 explains—twice. (It is a real medical condition, not some chiropractic nonsense). Do the exercises, they really help.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 21, 2020 12:34 AM |
I agree with R17. Do the exercises. Cleared it up for me to my skeptical surprise.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 21, 2020 12:38 AM |
Lay on your side and pretend you are trying to hold in a fart. Repeat 10 times.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 21, 2020 12:38 AM |
The exercises help me too. But mine is exacerbated by gummy earwax, which can pack itself tightly and cause pressure -- when that happens, a nurse or medical assistant "evacuates" the wax. The procedure doesn't hurt but is messy because a lot of warm water is used and tends to splash around. Vertigo is miserable, so I'm willing to do whatever works to relieve it.

I had vertigo about a year ago, it was pretty debilitating. I could hardly stand up for almost a week. I went to an ENT doctor and he did Epley Maneuver. He told me I had to sleep sitting up for two nights (that was the hardest part) but it worked and vertigo was gone.
Vertigo returned right before Coronavirus, but not as severe - and it went away on its own.
Good luck!

I've had family members who had the same dizziness and all of them were referred to the same doctor who uses this maneuver to help resolve the problem.
Yes, OP, this does work.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 21, 2020 1:28 AM |
You can do the Epley manoeuvre at home.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 21, 2020 1:31 AM |
How?

R24, Watch the video at R3 which gives clear instructions.

It won't play.
I was leaning over one morning upon waking to hug the husbear and everything started spinning.. I thought I was stroking out. Still can't sleep on right side.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 21, 2020 2:11 AM |
r26 your crystals need to be realigned.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 21, 2020 2:28 AM |
There are loads of videos and website telling you how to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 21, 2020 2:40 AM |
I fell backwards and hit my head on the ground, and developed vertigo. I’d never heard about the ear crystal stuff but tried the maneuvers at home for a few days and vertigo went away. Involved positional changes to try and gently float crystals back where they belonged.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 21, 2020 2:42 AM |
If I do that at R28 I will most certainly projectile vomit.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 21, 2020 2:45 AM |
R30 Either take an anti-emetic first or have a bucket nearby. When I learned to do it, the doctor gave me prochlorperazine.

OP You need to see a vestibular physiotherapist.
I had a shocking cases of vertigo back in 2014 and had recurrences whilst not as bad were really annoying. My GP referred my to a vestibular physiotherapist and she worked wonders. Took a number of sessions and I had to do exercises but she was a miracle worker. Haven't had any problems for the last couple of years.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 21, 2020 9:33 AM |
And learning how to pronounce vestibular physiotherapist without spitting will take your mind off your vertigo for quite awhile.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 21, 2020 12:49 PM |
I woke up with vertigo for no reason a few times (like once a year, which I wonder if there’s any connection to migraines that I also had occasionally, but that’s an aside). Dizziness that was so bad I thought I’d throw up. I used the Epley technique out of desperation and it did help but I felt like vomiting as I did it. The effect was immediate with less severe vertigo, but took time with more severe vertigo. I would try different exercises in YouTube for vertigo to align the ear crystals—it is better than doing nothing and just passively waiting. It does help.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 21, 2020 5:14 PM |
I've been afraid to try the Epley technique at home out of fear of making my vertigo worse. Has that happened to anyone?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 21, 2020 5:17 PM |
Not me, R36 -- the Epley exercises have always helped. For milder vertigo, I do a modified lesser version -- for stronger vertigo, I do the full version (very carefully). No version has ever failed to help, nor has any version made the vertigo worse.

I was planning to try the Epley exercises this weekend. Is there anything I need to know beforehand? My vertigo isn't terrible, but I have acid reflux which is making it worse for some reason. I don't want to anything that will mess me up badly while home alone.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 21, 2020 10:50 PM |
I am getting ready to try them now. I woke up at 1:45am on the 26th with terrible vertigo that has persisted ever since. I am sorry for every Liza joke I ever laughed at. This is hell on earth.

I have 3 relatives who had the problem.
All were referred to the same Chicago doctor who specializes in this.
All had a successful result.

I've had one case of vertigo and the Epley maneuver does work. Also try sleeping on your back with your upper body and head raised at a 45 degree angle (lots of pillows help with this) for a week or two along with no fast head turns. Worked for me.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 28, 2020 5:09 PM |
They work.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 28, 2020 5:39 PM |
Dr. Epley was an ENT-otolaryngologist based in Portland, OR. He was labeled a quack by other doctors and almost lost his license to practice.
I was one of his patients the last year or so of his work life. His background is pretty interesting to read about.

r19 I'm very intrested in fart things!
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 28, 2020 6:09 PM |
I've seen Vertigo if that helps?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 28, 2020 6:28 PM |
I had awful post-skull-fracture vertigo, occasionally being stuck in bed for two-three days at a time. It was accompanied by nystagmus, which was really unpleasant. A physical therapist performed a maneuver which greatly improved the vertigo and ended the nystagmus. I still have some balance problems, but am no longer confined to bed, no nausea, no nystagmus.

I suffered for years with vertigo. I did some exercises my regular ear doc gave me and they helped some. But only for a couple of days. And it only slightly helped.
But this doc on YouTube - this is the best. I watched the whole thing and then I did this right along with the laptop next to me. This doc knows what he's doing! One ear at a time. It did make me queasy for about an hour afterward. But not too bad. I followed his further instructions -stayed upright for 24 hours, slept sitting up - no bending over, etc. It worked.! The best thing to happen to me in a good while.

My trick is to stick an ice pick or equally sharp object (knitting needle) about mid way in and just gently swirl it about. Just be careful you don't go deeper but a little blood isn't much to be concerned about.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 28, 2020 9:55 PM |
The Epley maneuver seems to be helping. I feel like I am on a ship on a calm sea, rather than feeling like I am in the middle of an an active shipwreck. I am exhausted, and still falling to the left, but not violently like I was over the weekend.
