This happens to me often in this covid time. There will be days when I have no appetite or taste for anything. I call those my "Pedialyte or frozen pizza days."
What do you eat when you don't feel like eating but know that you have to eat something?
by Anonymous | reply 121 | August 26, 2020 10:31 AM |
Usually either comfort foods or nostalgia foods: Kraft dinner, instant cup ramen, grilled cheese & tomato soup, scrambled eggs and toast (sometimes add wienies), cooked spaghetti with powdered parm and butter and salt and pepper.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 20, 2020 5:26 PM |
mashed potatoes, applesauce, or Gerber Plum Pudding.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 20, 2020 5:29 PM |
A sandwich or toast.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 20, 2020 5:31 PM |
And how much do you weigh now, OP?
I drink yogurt milk when I don't feel like eating but need something in my stomach. And I am 70 kg./180 cm. Convert them yourself I couldn't care less about the imperial system.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 20, 2020 5:36 PM |
R4 I've lost 8 pounds since this started (for me) in March. I'm not concerned about the weight loss because I was / am overweight by 15 pounds anyway. I just don't care about losing weight right now; I'm more concerned with maintaining my health and not developing any health issues.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 20, 2020 5:41 PM |
I make a salad: greens, Kalamatas, halved cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese, walnuts, dressed alla Marcella Hazan (olive oil, salt, vinegar). Sometimes I'll make thousand island. I try always to have these things in my fridge.
Or else tuna (canned, Italian): celery, mayo, mustard, relish. If I have some blueberries, I will add those, too (don't laugh until you've tried it). I'll have that with some soup, if I have it.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 20, 2020 5:49 PM |

A smoothie. You can pack in plenty of vitamins and nutrients, or throw in some protein powder for extra oomph/nutrition. Doesn't have to be a huge Big-Gulp-sized smoothie, either.

That most often happens to me when I'm in a sugar-fall (low blood sugar from insulin use); although I 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 to have something, I don't 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 to have anything. I'll resort to perhaps half a small glass of milk, or some Lance's peanut butter crackers.

Canned fish or ramen, or both.

R20, it happens in low blood sugar situations. Your mood alters, you feels faintish, and somewhat counterintuitively, you don't want anything to eat. You have to force yourself to consume something.

R15 Interesting point. I know people who will cook when they're in this non-eating funk either because they hope the smell will force them to get an appetite OR they don't want their fresh food to go bad. I feel very guilty about throwing away fresh fruit and vegies that have gone bad.

I've put on the dreaded 15 lbs. I have NEVER been 15 lbs overweight at any time in my life. But my AC break last month and I can't afford to fix it. No gym. Too hot to run or exercise outside.
All to say: My only saving grace from going over the insanity precipice has to eat anything and everything. Is it me being weak minded? Yup. But I just can't seem to care these days.

OP I get that feeling often. Strangely, though I’m a good frequent cook and my food choices are healthy and well-portioned, I’m rarely truly famished and I’m a disinterested eater. No problem, except I have GERD issues so I can’t go too long on nothing.
My go-to for keeping my raging bitch of a stomach calm is very slowly nibbling through a small apple, a tiny glass ramekin of mixed seeds & a few nuts, a couple of 90-100% dark chocolate squares, or half a slice of dry sourdough bread. If I can’t even face rustling up any of those options, I’ll just spoon a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt into my mouth and wash it down quickly with water or tea before I can change my mind about it.
PSA I’m in a depressive slide and have been slowly going under for some months, though, so my metric isn’t for the 100% emotionally-healthy crowd.

Eggs, packaged miso soup, a few squares of milk chocolate.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 20, 2020 8:56 PM |
A plain omelette works every time.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 20, 2020 9:07 PM |
Ordinarily I don't eat if I'm not feeling really hungry. If I've already skipped the previous meal, (don't do breakfast) I make a pot of tea and have a slice of buttered toast with jam, Marmite, or Vegemite. If it's very late at night, just a few nuts and a nibble of cheese, or an apple.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 20, 2020 9:09 PM |
R32 Your loss of appetite isn't helping that mood. I hope you're better soon.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 20, 2020 9:49 PM |
Hard-boiled eggs. Costco used to sell already-HB’d eggs. If you can’t find that, make scrambled eggs. Throw some cheese in there if you have it.
Also, get a loaf of sliced bread, a jar of peanut butter, and some jam/jelly. PB&J sandwiches.
Amy’s frozen pizzas, etc.
Good luck, OP. Hang in there.

Glad you posted this OP. So many people I've talked to are going through this. I've started keeping a variety of canned soup on hand. Sometimes I'll splurge and get Rao's homemade chicken soup or minestrone in a jar. I'll heat some up and eat 4 of 5 bites with some cheese and a cracker or 2. I also always try to have grapes or black cherries and pop a few of those in my mouth. It is the weirdest food apathy I've ever experienced and it has to be COVID related. I even bought a can of chef boyardee ravioli last week after reading the beefaroni thread lol. (After a bottle of chardonnay, it was surprisingly satisfying and I haven't eaten that shit in years.) R39, it was like that in the beginning for me, eating anything and everything just to feel better. Then it all just lost it's appeal and I wished for a "food pill" just to get nourishment over with. Such a strange phenomenon. Is it depression, I wonder? I've also noticed I've been going to bed earlier and earlier. In bed, under my covers is my favorite place, hands down. I'm still going to work and bathing normally etc. But holy meh. Sometimes even the thought of it will make me feel nauseated for no reason at all.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 21, 2020 9:04 PM |
Also, I've been keeping cold ginger ale on hand as well. I think it helps with the out-of-the-blue nausea, and reminds me of my childhood when I would stay home sick with a cold.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 21, 2020 9:10 PM |
R54 Thank you. I can't believe how apathetic I am about food. I usually LOVE to eat and am not a picky eater. I, too, find cold ginger ale soothing; I'll eat it with a couple Saltine crackers. And I always have Pedialyte on hand; please do the same so you don't lose electrolytes.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | August 21, 2020 9:16 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 22, 2020 9:43 AM |
What? I don't understand OP's question.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 22, 2020 9:50 AM |
A bowl of cereal.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | August 22, 2020 9:51 AM |
If I don't feel like eating but my blood sugar has something else in mind, I'll drink something that contains nutrients like real fruit juice or I'll have a lemonade-matcha iced tea, perhaps a large hot tea with lemon and honey.
If that doesn't do the job I'll get a hot and sour soup, soondubu, meatless/vegetarian pho, minestrone, ramen or miso soup with udon. And that will usually suffice.

To the Pedialyte advocates above: isn't Gatorade better and cheaper? I've never had Pedialyte but I've read that it has a lot more sodium than Gatorade, because it's meant for children who've been throwing up and thus need more salt than an adult who's simply been losing sodium by sweating. And parents have told me that Pedialyte is expensive, whereas Gatorade is often on sale and fairly cheap. I use Gatorade when I'm not hungry, and also to recover from diarrhea -- it's easy to get down and doesn't taste bad (I like the blue flavor best).

R75 no one wants to eat that dense carbo shit when they don’t feel like eating. Have some fruit like a banana 🍌
by Anonymous | reply 77 | August 23, 2020 8:00 PM |
R77 that’s what I ate for extra calories when I didn’t feel like eating after my unexpected liver surgery. I’ll still eat it but with some peanut butter a couple of hours before I exercise. To each his own. Carbs are good and necessary, brain fog and energy level are real problems for active people.

Toasted Turkish with organic Danish butter (I know - my carbon footprint sucks with this meal) and Vegemite. If I’m not hungry when I pop the bread into the toaster I certainly am when the other ingredients are applied.
It’s also a sure fire hangover cure, very handy in these days of Covid day drinking.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | August 24, 2020 10:22 PM |
I’m another advocate for Pedialyte; I always keep some on hand. It’s much more hydrating than water and I have found an identical off brand that is a dollar cheaper. I use it only if I’m not feeling well or have been working outside and over did it. I’ve used Gatorade in the past and it’s just too sticky sweet for me.
For food when I don’t want to eat but know I need to: I’ll make a small omelette with cheese and perhaps. some fresh vegetables. Another option is doctored ramen soup. I’ll add sliced green onion, frozen peas and a bit of butter.

R99, the spoon isn't necessary if you've got at least one finger (or thumb). PB is a staple of my earthquake kit because it doesn't require a can opener or a spoon (just moist towelettes afterward). It does require liquid to drink right after, even just water -- but if you're not in the midst of an earthquake, V8 juice drunk directly from a pop-top can that's been kept in the refrigerator, with a shot of pepper vodka added, is perfect. A small green apple tastes great with both and provides roughage. A complete meal, without dishwashing!

R54 best to ask a health provider or counsellor, but from an outside-party standpoint I would wager you are experiencing a period of depressive mood.
When I’m in a dark place, the thought of eating a meal anything more than a piece of fruit or dry bread makes me nauseous and uncomfortable. I drink tons of tea, and just sit alone staring at walls or curled up on my bed. My sleep gets knocked all crazy too - like staying up til 3am with restless sad wakeful thoughts, then practically comatose in bed til noon the next day and feeling like getting up will bring doom.
Sorry to hear you’re feeling this way. It’s good you’re talking about it with us. Is there anyone else you could securely share this with, who could lend a hand with reminders to eat or help with groceries?
by Anonymous | reply 106 | August 25, 2020 5:11 PM |
Thanks, R105. Some kind of alcohol is vital to the well-stocked earthquake (or other disaster) kit. Even the abstemious might need it to cleanse a wound, though a full-fledged disaster could drive anyone to drink and then he'd be grateful for that vodka.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | August 25, 2020 5:59 PM |
R106 That's very kind of you. Thankfully I do have the support of family and friends. Unfortunately there is more contributing to my depressive state than just corona. My son has relapsed on heroin and nothing seems to deter him from it. He is engaging in very reckless behavior (stealing my car and going to bad sections of town to find random crackhead prostitutes to get him heroin etc.) Even his own precious baby son is meaningless to him right now. My 75 year old parents bought him a truck and do not know he has relapsed. He is scheduled to go cross country to get the truck from them. Now I have to shatter them with the news. Sorry for the depressing post, but I wanted to explain the situation.
