What do you eat when you don't feel like eating but know that you have to eat something?

This happens to me often in this covid time. There will be days when I have no appetite or taste for anything. I call those my "Pedialyte or frozen pizza days."

by Anonymousreply 121August 26, 2020 10:31 AM

Usually either comfort foods or nostalgia foods: Kraft dinner, instant cup ramen, grilled cheese & tomato soup, scrambled eggs and toast (sometimes add wienies), cooked spaghetti with powdered parm and butter and salt and pepper.

by Anonymousreply 1August 20, 2020 5:26 PM

mashed potatoes, applesauce, or Gerber Plum Pudding.

by Anonymousreply 2August 20, 2020 5:29 PM

A sandwich or toast.

by Anonymousreply 3August 20, 2020 5:31 PM

And how much do you weigh now, OP?

I drink yogurt milk when I don't feel like eating but need something in my stomach. And I am 70 kg./180 cm. Convert them yourself I couldn't care less about the imperial system.

by Anonymousreply 4August 20, 2020 5:36 PM

R4 I've lost 8 pounds since this started (for me) in March. I'm not concerned about the weight loss because I was / am overweight by 15 pounds anyway. I just don't care about losing weight right now; I'm more concerned with maintaining my health and not developing any health issues.

by Anonymousreply 5August 20, 2020 5:41 PM

I make a salad: greens, Kalamatas, halved cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese, walnuts, dressed alla Marcella Hazan (olive oil, salt, vinegar). Sometimes I'll make thousand island. I try always to have these things in my fridge.

Or else tuna (canned, Italian): celery, mayo, mustard, relish. If I have some blueberries, I will add those, too (don't laugh until you've tried it). I'll have that with some soup, if I have it.

by Anonymousreply 6August 20, 2020 5:49 PM

R6 You make that when you don't know what to eat? Wow. What do you do when you're actually hungry?

by Anonymousreply 7August 20, 2020 5:51 PM

Not complicated at all, r7, as long as everything's here.

by Anonymousreply 8August 20, 2020 5:54 PM

Cookies. Lots and lots of cookies.

by Anonymousreply 9August 20, 2020 5:57 PM

Mixed nuts or yogurt

by Anonymousreply 10August 20, 2020 5:57 PM

You don’t HAVE to eat something every day. You won’t die if you don’t stuff your face every now and again. But please drink water, you’ll die fast without that.

by Anonymousreply 11August 20, 2020 6:03 PM

eggs, prepared salads, prepared dinners, fruit, cured ham, cheese, just drink a beer, etc.

by Anonymousreply 12August 20, 2020 6:05 PM

R11 Good advice, but I'm guessing you didn't read OP's comment about drinking Pedialyte...

by Anonymousreply 13August 20, 2020 6:07 PM

A smoothie. You can pack in plenty of vitamins and nutrients, or throw in some protein powder for extra oomph/nutrition. Doesn't have to be a huge Big-Gulp-sized smoothie, either.

by Anonymousreply 14August 20, 2020 6:14 PM

The title of this thread is when you don't feel like eating, not when you don't feel like cooking.

by Anonymousreply 15August 20, 2020 6:17 PM

Toast

by Anonymousreply 16August 20, 2020 6:21 PM

If I'm trying to lose weight, I won't eat anything if I'm not hungry.

by Anonymousreply 17August 20, 2020 6:22 PM

That most often happens to me when I'm in a sugar-fall (low blood sugar from insulin use); although I 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 to have something, I don't 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 to have anything. I'll resort to perhaps half a small glass of milk, or some Lance's peanut butter crackers.

by Anonymousreply 18August 20, 2020 6:23 PM

Canned fish or ramen, or both.

by Anonymousreply 19August 20, 2020 6:24 PM

"don't feel like eating"

I don't understand this combination of words.

by Anonymousreply 20August 20, 2020 6:24 PM

If I’ve had a nice lunch and don’t feel like I need dinner - a glass of wine and a small bowl of Cape Cod chips and I’m good.

by Anonymousreply 21August 20, 2020 6:28 PM

R20, it happens in low blood sugar situations. Your mood alters, you feels faintish, and somewhat counterintuitively, you don't want anything to eat. You have to force yourself to consume something.

by Anonymousreply 22August 20, 2020 6:29 PM

Captain Crunch cereal.

by Anonymousreply 23August 20, 2020 6:29 PM

^^ feel, not feels.

by Anonymousreply 24August 20, 2020 6:30 PM

[quote]The title of this thread is when you don't feel like eating, not when you don't feel like cooking.

R15 Interesting point. I know people who will cook when they're in this non-eating funk either because they hope the smell will force them to get an appetite OR they don't want their fresh food to go bad. I feel very guilty about throwing away fresh fruit and vegies that have gone bad.

by Anonymousreply 25August 20, 2020 6:58 PM

I've put on the dreaded 15 lbs. I have NEVER been 15 lbs overweight at any time in my life. But my AC break last month and I can't afford to fix it. No gym. Too hot to run or exercise outside.

All to say: My only saving grace from going over the insanity precipice has to eat anything and everything. Is it me being weak minded? Yup. But I just can't seem to care these days.

by Anonymousreply 26August 20, 2020 7:11 PM

Tortilla chips and salsa.

by Anonymousreply 27August 20, 2020 7:12 PM

Cheese. Eggs.

by Anonymousreply 28August 20, 2020 7:13 PM

Protein drink.

by Anonymousreply 29August 20, 2020 7:40 PM

Cum and lots of it

by Anonymousreply 30August 20, 2020 7:45 PM

Durians

by Anonymousreply 31August 20, 2020 7:46 PM

OP I get that feeling often. Strangely, though I’m a good frequent cook and my food choices are healthy and well-portioned, I’m rarely truly famished and I’m a disinterested eater. No problem, except I have GERD issues so I can’t go too long on nothing.

My go-to for keeping my raging bitch of a stomach calm is very slowly nibbling through a small apple, a tiny glass ramekin of mixed seeds & a few nuts, a couple of 90-100% dark chocolate squares, or half a slice of dry sourdough bread. If I can’t even face rustling up any of those options, I’ll just spoon a couple of tablespoons of yoghurt into my mouth and wash it down quickly with water or tea before I can change my mind about it.

PSA I’m in a depressive slide and have been slowly going under for some months, though, so my metric isn’t for the 100% emotionally-healthy crowd.

by Anonymousreply 32August 20, 2020 7:48 PM

A toasted English muffin with peanut butter and grape jam.

by Anonymousreply 33August 20, 2020 8:28 PM

I make nothing and skip a meal. By the time the next mealtime comes around, I definitely know what I want to eat.

Doesn’t kill me.

by Anonymousreply 34August 20, 2020 8:48 PM

Eggs, packaged miso soup, a few squares of milk chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 35August 20, 2020 8:56 PM

A plain omelette works every time.

by Anonymousreply 36August 20, 2020 9:07 PM

Ordinarily I don't eat if I'm not feeling really hungry. If I've already skipped the previous meal, (don't do breakfast) I make a pot of tea and have a slice of buttered toast with jam, Marmite, or Vegemite. If it's very late at night, just a few nuts and a nibble of cheese, or an apple.

by Anonymousreply 37August 20, 2020 9:09 PM

R32 Your loss of appetite isn't helping that mood. I hope you're better soon.

by Anonymousreply 38August 20, 2020 9:46 PM

Problem is I always feel like eating! How do you make it stop?

by Anonymousreply 39August 20, 2020 9:49 PM

Hard-boiled eggs. Costco used to sell already-HB’d eggs. If you can’t find that, make scrambled eggs. Throw some cheese in there if you have it.

Also, get a loaf of sliced bread, a jar of peanut butter, and some jam/jelly. PB&J sandwiches.

Amy’s frozen pizzas, etc.

Good luck, OP. Hang in there.

by Anonymousreply 40August 20, 2020 10:06 PM

R40 why are people so lazy? You can’t boil an egg?

by Anonymousreply 41August 21, 2020 1:20 PM

Maybe you should go sit on a terrace and eat a simple sandwich and get some life energy.

by Anonymousreply 42August 21, 2020 5:23 PM

Good advice, R42. It's a beautiful day today. I think I'll make a piece of toast and eat it out on the patio. "Life energy" is exactly what I could use.

by Anonymousreply 43August 21, 2020 5:26 PM

That Greek yogurt. It's real good. It's actually helping me with my tiredness 24/7 and my stomach problems. That, some raspberries and some water will help.

by Anonymousreply 44August 21, 2020 5:31 PM

R44 I'm trying to drink more water and keep myself hydrated. I notice my skin is getting crinkly so I'm definitely lacking hydration. Thanks.

by Anonymousreply 45August 21, 2020 5:34 PM

Smoked Almonds or yogurt (I try to eat high protein)

by Anonymousreply 46August 21, 2020 5:44 PM

Spaghetti O's. Eating them right now as a matter of fact.

by Anonymousreply 47August 21, 2020 5:47 PM

Pb or cheddar on triscuits

by Anonymousreply 48August 21, 2020 5:51 PM

Pop Tarts. Those new pretzel ones are fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 49August 21, 2020 5:55 PM

For some reason Stouffer’s French bread pizzas do the trick. I think the crunch satisfies me and they’re quick and easy.

by Anonymousreply 50August 21, 2020 6:00 PM

R50 I just discovered them! I love the 3 cheese when I don't know what to eat and am in a hurry. It's great dipped in marinara sauce or topped with giardiniera.

by Anonymousreply 51August 21, 2020 6:17 PM

Peanut butter and honey sandwich. A carrot or an apple if I have one as a go-with.

by Anonymousreply 52August 21, 2020 6:21 PM

I just had peanut butter and honey toast this morning with a slice of apple on top. It's a great combination.

by Anonymousreply 53August 21, 2020 6:24 PM

Glad you posted this OP. So many people I've talked to are going through this. I've started keeping a variety of canned soup on hand. Sometimes I'll splurge and get Rao's homemade chicken soup or minestrone in a jar. I'll heat some up and eat 4 of 5 bites with some cheese and a cracker or 2. I also always try to have grapes or black cherries and pop a few of those in my mouth. It is the weirdest food apathy I've ever experienced and it has to be COVID related. I even bought a can of chef boyardee ravioli last week after reading the beefaroni thread lol. (After a bottle of chardonnay, it was surprisingly satisfying and I haven't eaten that shit in years.) R39, it was like that in the beginning for me, eating anything and everything just to feel better. Then it all just lost it's appeal and I wished for a "food pill" just to get nourishment over with. Such a strange phenomenon. Is it depression, I wonder? I've also noticed I've been going to bed earlier and earlier. In bed, under my covers is my favorite place, hands down. I'm still going to work and bathing normally etc. But holy meh. Sometimes even the thought of it will make me feel nauseated for no reason at all.

by Anonymousreply 54August 21, 2020 9:04 PM

Also, I've been keeping cold ginger ale on hand as well. I think it helps with the out-of-the-blue nausea, and reminds me of my childhood when I would stay home sick with a cold.

by Anonymousreply 55August 21, 2020 9:10 PM

R54 Thank you. I can't believe how apathetic I am about food. I usually LOVE to eat and am not a picky eater. I, too, find cold ginger ale soothing; I'll eat it with a couple Saltine crackers. And I always have Pedialyte on hand; please do the same so you don't lose electrolytes.

by Anonymousreply 56August 21, 2020 9:16 PM

Thanks OP. Try to make sure you get some protein too. I will also eat a few chocolate covered almonds after my few bites of soup. Hang in there.

by Anonymousreply 57August 21, 2020 9:18 PM

OP how about a protein shake made with protein powder and fruit?

by Anonymousreply 58August 21, 2020 10:05 PM

Grilled Cheese

by Anonymousreply 59August 21, 2020 10:10 PM

R57 and R58 Thanks for the suggestions. I know I'm missing protein.

by Anonymousreply 60August 21, 2020 10:12 PM

Protein shake. If I don't feel like eating and I just want to sustain my health.

Duck fat grilled cheese... trust me

by Anonymousreply 62August 21, 2020 10:20 PM

I'll spread some peanut butter on Ritz Crazkers and drink chocolate milk.

by Anonymousreply 63August 21, 2020 10:37 PM

Crackers, that is.

by Anonymousreply 64August 21, 2020 10:37 PM

R63 I love crackers with cal and Grady! (Yes, I know you corrected yourself and I’ve done far worse—you just have me a chuckle, for which I thank you.)

by Anonymousreply 65August 22, 2020 1:07 AM

R65 again. Well, I see autocorrect has made me look even more insane and incompetent. As Margo Channing would say, One of destiny’s merry pranks.

by Anonymousreply 66August 22, 2020 1:09 AM

Something sweet that I don't need to chew, like yoghurt or pudding.

Or a tomato. For some reason I'm always up for eating a tomato. With salt and pepper.

by Anonymousreply 67August 22, 2020 9:43 AM

What? I don't understand OP's question.

by Anonymousreply 68August 22, 2020 9:50 AM

A bowl of cereal.

by Anonymousreply 69August 22, 2020 9:51 AM

If I don't feel like eating but my blood sugar has something else in mind, I'll drink something that contains nutrients like real fruit juice or I'll have a lemonade-matcha iced tea, perhaps a large hot tea with lemon and honey.

If that doesn't do the job I'll get a hot and sour soup, soondubu, meatless/vegetarian pho, minestrone, ramen or miso soup with udon. And that will usually suffice.

by Anonymousreply 70August 22, 2020 10:04 AM

Cream of wheat and peanut butter toast

A bowl of vanilla almond crunch cereal

Mixes of fruit

by Anonymousreply 71August 22, 2020 12:25 PM

Porridge with berries or sliced banana served on top.

by Anonymousreply 72August 22, 2020 3:31 PM

CREAM... OF WHHHEEEAT!

by Anonymousreply 73August 23, 2020 3:20 PM

Cheese and crackers

Chocolate milk.

by Anonymousreply 74August 23, 2020 3:31 PM

Toasted bagel with a good fruit spread

by Anonymousreply 75August 23, 2020 4:57 PM

To the Pedialyte advocates above: isn't Gatorade better and cheaper? I've never had Pedialyte but I've read that it has a lot more sodium than Gatorade, because it's meant for children who've been throwing up and thus need more salt than an adult who's simply been losing sodium by sweating. And parents have told me that Pedialyte is expensive, whereas Gatorade is often on sale and fairly cheap. I use Gatorade when I'm not hungry, and also to recover from diarrhea -- it's easy to get down and doesn't taste bad (I like the blue flavor best).

by Anonymousreply 76August 23, 2020 7:32 PM

R75 no one wants to eat that dense carbo shit when they don’t feel like eating. Have some fruit like a banana 🍌

by Anonymousreply 77August 23, 2020 8:00 PM

R77 that’s what I ate for extra calories when I didn’t feel like eating after my unexpected liver surgery. I’ll still eat it but with some peanut butter a couple of hours before I exercise. To each his own. Carbs are good and necessary, brain fog and energy level are real problems for active people.

by Anonymousreply 78August 23, 2020 8:26 PM

I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet. I don’t have time to read the whole thread but how about watching food videos? Food Network? Anything to increase your appetite.

by Anonymousreply 79August 24, 2020 2:35 AM

R78 carbs are NOT good. Protein and fats are good. No wonder Americans are so fat.

by Anonymousreply 80August 24, 2020 10:31 AM

Buttered toast.

by Anonymousreply 81August 24, 2020 10:47 AM

Toasted Turkish with organic Danish butter (I know - my carbon footprint sucks with this meal) and Vegemite. If I’m not hungry when I pop the bread into the toaster I certainly am when the other ingredients are applied.

It’s also a sure fire hangover cure, very handy in these days of Covid day drinking.

by Anonymousreply 82August 24, 2020 10:22 PM

I’m another advocate for Pedialyte; I always keep some on hand. It’s much more hydrating than water and I have found an identical off brand that is a dollar cheaper. I use it only if I’m not feeling well or have been working outside and over did it. I’ve used Gatorade in the past and it’s just too sticky sweet for me.

For food when I don’t want to eat but know I need to: I’ll make a small omelette with cheese and perhaps. some fresh vegetables. Another option is doctored ramen soup. I’ll add sliced green onion, frozen peas and a bit of butter.

by Anonymousreply 83August 25, 2020 11:30 AM

I bought some turmeric and ginger flavored almonds recently. Very nice combo, I eat them as a snack along with some dried prunes and a banana or an apple.

by Anonymousreply 84August 25, 2020 11:40 AM

Cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, Alta-Badia, or Parmigiano-Reggiano), walnuts, and fruit (sliced apples or pears, berries).

by Anonymousreply 85August 25, 2020 12:33 PM

Well-spiced beans and rice with a cucumber and tomato salad.

by Anonymousreply 86August 25, 2020 12:38 PM

For months, it's way too hot/humid to be bothered cooking. All I eat is melted cheese - goat gouda, manchego, halloumi or Wyke cheddar - on whole buckwheat tortillas with sprouts, high protein fruit yogurt with a couple of tablespoons of no-sugar added muesli and lots of fruit.

by Anonymousreply 87August 25, 2020 12:42 PM

So basically what you gurls are eating is food when you don’t want to. This is the silliest nelly thread ever!

by Anonymousreply 88August 25, 2020 12:44 PM

[quote] What do you eat when you don't feel like eating but know that you have to eat something?

Just a little nosh - a pizza, and maybe half a box of ice cream.

by Anonymousreply 89August 25, 2020 12:45 PM

Thanks R88 that's REALLY helpful.

by Anonymousreply 90August 25, 2020 1:40 PM

Scrambled egg whites, or a bowl of broccoli. Good for you, and the eggs strengthen hard and nails. Same with a slice of Salmon.

by Anonymousreply 91August 25, 2020 1:45 PM

R84, I learned about mixing ginger and turmeric together from Nigella Lawson, who infuses vodka with them. Her "recipe" isn't on-line but the one at the link gives amounts.

by Anonymousreply 94August 25, 2020 2:34 PM

Saltine crackers, Lipton Noodle Soup, scrambled eggs if I have the energy to clean up.

by Anonymousreply 95August 25, 2020 2:49 PM

A hard boiled egg, a bit of fruit or cheese.

by Anonymousreply 96August 25, 2020 2:57 PM

My own jizz!

by Anonymousreply 97August 25, 2020 3:03 PM

I just did a 48 hr fast...It was wonderful. One of the posters upthread was right, you don't have to eat all the time, every day. Just keep yourself well hydrated with water and you'll be fine. Im going to break my fast with a light salad and some simple protein.

by Anonymousreply 98August 25, 2020 3:08 PM

A spoonful or two of peanut butter directly from the spoon.

I also keep cans of chicken and beef broth in the house for these days. Lastly, I have several flavors of ready-made protein shakes like Atkins and Premier. Equate brand is good too. I serve them ice cold and over ice.

by Anonymousreply 99August 25, 2020 3:38 PM

When I really have to eat something? The poolboy. Or the personal trainer.

When I don't feel like eating? I just stand in the corner and watch.

Greek yogurt with fruit

by Anonymousreply 102August 25, 2020 4:23 PM

[quote] A spoonful or two of peanut butter directly from the spoon.

R99, the spoon isn't necessary if you've got at least one finger (or thumb). PB is a staple of my earthquake kit because it doesn't require a can opener or a spoon (just moist towelettes afterward). It does require liquid to drink right after, even just water -- but if you're not in the midst of an earthquake, V8 juice drunk directly from a pop-top can that's been kept in the refrigerator, with a shot of pepper vodka added, is perfect. A small green apple tastes great with both and provides roughage. A complete meal, without dishwashing!

by Anonymousreply 103August 25, 2020 4:51 PM

Grits

by Anonymousreply 104August 25, 2020 5:01 PM

Yum R103. That little impromptu V8 Bloody Mary sounds tasty.

by Anonymousreply 105August 25, 2020 5:04 PM

R54 best to ask a health provider or counsellor, but from an outside-party standpoint I would wager you are experiencing a period of depressive mood.

When I’m in a dark place, the thought of eating a meal anything more than a piece of fruit or dry bread makes me nauseous and uncomfortable. I drink tons of tea, and just sit alone staring at walls or curled up on my bed. My sleep gets knocked all crazy too - like staying up til 3am with restless sad wakeful thoughts, then practically comatose in bed til noon the next day and feeling like getting up will bring doom.

Sorry to hear you’re feeling this way. It’s good you’re talking about it with us. Is there anyone else you could securely share this with, who could lend a hand with reminders to eat or help with groceries?

by Anonymousreply 106August 25, 2020 5:11 PM

Thanks, R105. Some kind of alcohol is vital to the well-stocked earthquake (or other disaster) kit. Even the abstemious might need it to cleanse a wound, though a full-fledged disaster could drive anyone to drink and then he'd be grateful for that vodka.

by Anonymousreply 107August 25, 2020 5:59 PM

R106 That's very kind of you. Thankfully I do have the support of family and friends. Unfortunately there is more contributing to my depressive state than just corona. My son has relapsed on heroin and nothing seems to deter him from it. He is engaging in very reckless behavior (stealing my car and going to bad sections of town to find random crackhead prostitutes to get him heroin etc.) Even his own precious baby son is meaningless to him right now. My 75 year old parents bought him a truck and do not know he has relapsed. He is scheduled to go cross country to get the truck from them. Now I have to shatter them with the news. Sorry for the depressing post, but I wanted to explain the situation.

by Anonymousreply 108August 25, 2020 6:49 PM

If you're not hungry, don't eat. Your body is telling you that it doesn't need food

by Anonymousreply 109August 25, 2020 6:51 PM

That isn't always the case, especially for people with blood sugar issues.

by Anonymousreply 110August 25, 2020 6:52 PM

I drink a glass of fresh tomato juice with lemon and call it a night.

by Anonymousreply 111August 25, 2020 6:56 PM

Chocolate Ice cream or a bowl of cereal.

by Anonymousreply 112August 25, 2020 7:16 PM

I keep seeds and nuts in my dusty, dry, unfucked anal cavity. I eat a 8 seeds and 4 nuts with a a sliver of lemon peel, a teaspoon of kefir, and treat myself to a thimble of flat tonic. A litter of tonic lasts about a month. I live quiet as a mouse. Happy about quarantine. One time I touched a man's peewee, it was interesting but really not my cup of tea. Thank god I'm not a typical gay prostitution whore.

by Anonymousreply 113August 25, 2020 7:16 PM

I love my hot tomato drink in the morning.

Chilled tomato juice, Tabasco, herbal salt, Wochester sauce, pepper, orange and lime juice, a pinch of sugar, balsamic vinegar.

by Anonymousreply 114August 25, 2020 9:14 PM

When my blood sugar drops I do not feel hunger, if I did not eat problems could result.

I know what that tired in ability to focus means and I eat a bit.

Total bullshit that you should not eat unless you feel hunger.

by Anonymousreply 115August 25, 2020 10:13 PM
