A jar of grape jelly.

Bulgogi sauce (Korean Barbecue) would be nice.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 17, 2020 8:10 PM |
I've never used this specific recipe, but you get my point.

You’re going to a party?

Catsup.

[quote] Catsup.
Ooh-la-la. It ain’t dinner with the Queen, fancy boy.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 17, 2020 8:31 PM |
r5 and r1, go to the party together.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 17, 2020 8:41 PM |
Throw R1 and R5 together with some pineapple juice and you have Polynesian meatballs!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 17, 2020 8:47 PM |
Usually I take drugs and booze to parties but you do what works for you, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 17, 2020 8:47 PM |
I used to go to this restaurant called Win Schuler’s in Marshall MI when I lived close by. They are known for their prime rib, bar cheese & chips, and meatballs. Their meatballs are excellent! Here’s a copycat recipe. Never tried to make them but I know they taste good!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 17, 2020 8:51 PM |
It's a very small house party. Here there will be plenty of booze but no drugs. So far another man is making spanakopitis (sp) and there. Don't know what else the others are making or buying. We're all tire of staying home & exercising.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 17, 2020 10:22 PM |
Whatever kind of meatballs you make, OP, sweat the onions until they are soft before adding them to the meatball mixture.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 17, 2020 10:25 PM |
R12, Thank you for your suggestion. Will do.
Also know from previous DL poster to chill the mixture for several hours before cooking them so that they don't fall apart.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 18, 2020 12:33 AM |
Wouldn't our answer depend on who will be at the party and what impression you want to make?
A group of elderly unadventurous relatives would get a very different sauce than a pack of vain WeHo ProMos
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 18, 2020 12:38 AM |
Tear some white bread up into small pieces, soak in milk, and then mix in with the ground beef. It makes the meatballs soft and moist.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 18, 2020 12:41 AM |
What about some Trader Joe’s turkey meatballs? Just throw them in with some barbecue sauce. Tell them you made them. And tell them they’re low fat & that’s why they taste like crap.!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 18, 2020 12:57 AM |
Bitch, you are suppose to not going to parties....goin kill us all!!!!!!!!!!!
In a crock pot, bottle of bbq sauce or a jar of spaghetti sauce.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 18, 2020 1:02 AM |
R17, There will be less than 20 people at the house party. I haven't been having real fun since Mardi Gras.
Yes of course I'll be taking my crock pot after browning the meatballs 1st. Prefer homemade red sauce to jarred.
Korean sauce R2 suggested sounds good too.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 18, 2020 5:16 AM |
If this is the USA and the party is indoors, do not attend this party, fool.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 18, 2020 5:20 AM |
R19, Actually the party will be held at the condo rooftop patio. Thank you for your concern.
I haven't been sick in 1 1/2 years and am in good physical shape with no underlying medical conditions. Attendees will generally be 35 - 50.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 18, 2020 5:31 AM |
I am glad it is outdoors. As for the rest of your post, I guess you didn't get the memo that its a crap shoot and "underlying medical conditions" are not required for a rough ride or DEATH.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 18, 2020 5:46 AM |
People who continue to attend parties are why we have a surging global pandemic. There is NO excuse for this reckless behaviour at this time. Waaaah, I miss my friends! Suck it up bitch.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 18, 2020 5:58 AM |
OP, how about a Bolognese sauce? If possible, I'd also make pappardelle (thin, wide noodles of pasta) as well.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 18, 2020 5:59 AM |
OP you ought to bring Swedish meatballs and an estate attorney for a workshop on writing wills and testaments. Since you have decided to act on the Herd Immunity strategy.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 18, 2020 6:01 AM |
If OP is doing spanakopita, I would go with falafel and a tahini/lemon sauce. Depending on your geographic location this could be a huge faux pas. In 1988 I brought Hummus/babaganouch/falafel platter to a gay, pot luck in Dallas- Inside the loop!, and not a single person had even HEARD of any of these weird dishes. "Now honey, why on earth would anyone want eat something called feel awful?" It was HILARIOUS! You can imagine how much jokes they were able to make about this. The tahini/cum jokes alone would have you all in stiches. At least the lesbians liked it!

I make buffalo balls. Grind up boneless skinless chicken thighs in a food processor with onion and bread crumbs. Bake them. Sauté them in a mix of Frank’s hot sauce and butter. Serve with blue cheese dressing. I make my own and add finely chopped celery to it. There is not a decent blue cheese dressing out there; they’re all filled with guar gum and sugar.

Mix Cranberry and Chili on the meatballs or simply use satay sauce.

Cranberry and Chili sauce I mean

Velveeta.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 18, 2020 1:50 PM |
America? Just bring a jar of mayo and a bag of sugar.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 18, 2020 1:54 PM |
Mustard is a must when eating meat -- at least for me. But if you wouldn't prefer that, I would suggest Sweet Chili sauce (of the Chinese variation) or any zingy, spicy, viscerally bright Korean sauce. Or if you're such a bone-dry bore (nothing wrong with that), go for garlic aioli.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 18, 2020 2:13 PM |
These people.
Skip the red sauce. And look up three recipes for Swedish meatballs and adapt your recipe for them accordingly. You can't use a good Italian meatball recipe because it would be too tender. You need more solidity (while still being tender enough) for something served solo.
It's summer. DO NOT DO ANYTHING ITALIAN because it will look stupid and taste incomplete.
The traditional sauces are more winter-aimed and not for outside, but a nice light orange-cardamon-mustard sauce would work.
NO POULTRY!!!!!!!!

Mama used to serve swedish meatballs at our dinner parties and they appeared in a silver chafing dish with that fascinating little blue flame underneath.. Elegantly presented.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 18, 2020 3:09 PM |
R33 the brown sauce the swedes and Danes use really isn’t great. The Lingonberry sauce is but then you might as well use cranberry.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 18, 2020 3:11 PM |
Gravy
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 18, 2020 4:44 PM |
r33 I'd like to know how you make your meatballs, please.

So are they beef or beef and pork. Or Veal and pork. And do not make Italian meatballs with tomato Sauce. No.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 19, 2020 3:13 AM |
High quality ground beef. Serving freshly grated Parmesan cheese on the side.
I'd use top quality canned tomatoes & fresh herbs, sauteed onion & chopped carrots, garlic, red wine, bread crumbs, beaten eggs. Make the red sauce the day beforehand after cooking it on low heat for a long time. Approximates my mother's old recipe, although she had access to homegrown tomatoes.
Love the Korean and other sauce suggestions from previous posters but realize DL is correct. Better not to take a risk that other attendees don't have my cosmopolitan tastes.

You can never go wrong with Ragu - no one will ever know it was not homemade...wink, wink!
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 19, 2020 3:30 AM |
R42, I can taste the difference between jarred sauce and homemade.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 19, 2020 3:36 AM |
I think you should buck expectations and do meatballs in a white sauce like a mushroom bechamel. Or something like a meaty fondue.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 19, 2020 4:04 AM |
R33 I have several recipes. One without sauce and with a bit of mustard. One with homemade satay, one with cranberry sauce and one with Lingonberry. You prefer the smaller Scandinavian ones?

R46, I'm mostly curious about the meatballs themselves rather than the sauces that go with them. I'm responding to your having said not to use Italian meatballs because they're too tender. So I was wondering how you made the meatball itself.
If I have to choose from among your three, however, it will be the one with cranberries.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 19, 2020 2:55 PM |
How about a nice clam sauce?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 19, 2020 3:46 PM |
OP!!!!! If you're going to be with waspy types bring beef and veal mixed with chopped onions and parsley, and brown gravy and mushrooms.
If you're going to be around Mediterranean types bring ground lamb meatballs spiced up with garlic oregano and a pinch of cinnamon, and use a yogurt cucumber sauce. Use sprigs of mint too. It will be really wonderful.

And since you'll be with COVIDIOTS bring a gas mask and your insurance card.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 21, 2020 1:02 PM |
Make sure that these meatballs are to die for, because you’re gonna die after the party...from Covid.
Buy two bags of “Party Meatballs” from Trader Joe’s. prepare as directed and put them in your Crockpot.. Open a jar of Sweet & Sour sauce, warm it up as directed, pour It over the meatballs, stir them all together in your crockpot, take it up to the roof and plug it in. Set out a stack of small paper plates and a box of tooth picks.
Now, go stand off to the side & light a cigarette.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 21, 2020 1:21 PM |
And be sure to wear your mask the whole time, R53. Especially during the last sentence.

Grape jelly and chili sauce is the 'classic' slow cooker appetizer!

I make sauce, meatballs, sausage, and braciola every couple Sundays.
You have to brown the meatballs, sausage, and braciola before cooking them in the sauce. You can't put them in the oven. They dry out. Don't use breadcrumbs. Take a slice or two of bread (my Mom and Nonna preferred white. I use some whole grain or wheat). Wet the bread in water or milk before adding it to the mix. Every once in a while, I'll put a small piece of mozzarella into each of the meatballs before browning and cooking.
The inside of my braciola are half a hard boiled egg, parmesan cheeses, s&p, and parsley. For good braciola, you need a good Italian butcher who knows how to cut the beef thin. Supermarket meat is awful.

Sauce? What the fuck is sauce? It's GRAVY!

If you want a good marinara in a jar (no cooking!) try Rao's Marinara. It is excellent quality for something that comes straight from a jar. I'd recommand making the meatballs though. I have never had a great meatball that wasn't homemade.

Attending a party in these times is madness, OP, regardless of whether it's indoors or outdoors. You not only risk your own health but the health of everyone you encounter for several weeks. But I suspect that you know that and this whole thing is a trolling EST.
All the same, to answer your question: It sounds like you are taking an hors d'oeuvres-type meatball, not a full meal. That would fit with your friend taking spanakopita, since meatballs and spanakopita do not go together as a meal.
For meatball appetizers in the summer, barbecue sauce is the best choice. You can go to a lot of trouble and make your own, or you can go to the supermarket and select from a huge variety that ranges from thick and sweet to thin and vinegary. Make small meatballs ("cocktail" meatballs), cook them and then simmer them in the sauce. Bring toothpicks for people to spear the tasty little devils with. Teriyaki sauce would work, too.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 25, 2020 12:13 AM |
With offerings like this, OP, this will obviously be your last invitation, so enjoy
