I'm still fascinated by this case and am curious to see if any new information has come up. Will they have an interview with Nicole Kessinger? It’s interesting that the whole Thrive thing was all but erased in this documentary. I think the name was only mentioned once and there was never any full explanation about her work. I think it’s an important aspect of the story along with their financial situation, which by all accounts was very precarious that would have added extensively to the story and the motivation for the murder and his need to escape.

It also would have helped explain her obsessive need for the social media and promotion of her family and explained the extensive collection of video and pictures. I’m surprised there was never a narrative by his defense that all those patches of whatever was in the Thrive might have driven him to commit the murders, a kind of Twinky defense. I wonder if Thrive somehow got involved and threatened to sue if they were made a part of the story. Someone needs to do a full out documentary on Thrive and other pyramid scheme companies.

I always avoid "documentaries" that are endorsed by a victim's family (for obvious reasons), so I didn't watch the Netflix tribute, but I do know a lot about this case. Shanann was a grifter. There is also ample evidence that she had Munchausen and Munchausen by proxy. She plunged her family into bankruptcy twice. She locked her husband out of access to their bank accounts so he had no idea how dire their financial situation had become, again. She was not a good person by any means.

The DL was the best place to have an open discussion about this case because it was the only place that you didn't have to preface every comment with, "But they didn't deserve to die!" I watched the doc and was struck by how she was absolutely obsessed with recording everything. Telling him to text her when he was coming down the escalator so she can film the kids greeting him and not being able to hug them until they got closer to the camera, so she could get a better view of the reunion. I hadn't followed this before but just watched the Netflix doc and did some Googling. I guess there was a Lifetime movie that mostly blamed her? People tend to marry spouses with similar levels of emotional maturity---I'm guessing in their own ways they were pretty immature (her letter to him that looked/sounded like a 12 year old wrote it). She then died from choking on her vomit. Paul and Karla videotaped this rape. Sick.

After the couple were caught, Paul received life imprisonment in Canada. Karla claimed she was abused by her husband and an unwilling accomplice in their crimes. She plea bargained and received a 12-year prison sentence. However, there was a public outcry when videotapes later surfaced and revealed she was an active participant. The bitch was released from prison in 2005 and lives under a different name.

Here are a few more tidbits about St. Shanann: She worked in retail, had no higher education, but paid for and built a $350k McMansion all on her own. Shortly after, she inexplicably decides she has to move to Colorado in a hurry (better climate for her heath challenges 🙄) . I followed the case a bit because it was on DL, i got a little sucked in. I don't normally engage with true crime, esp. in the US.

Chris deserves to spend decades in jail.

Does he deserve to spend his whole life in jail - maybe 50+ years - with no possibility whatsoever of parole? That seems to me to be a form of torture, particularly if he is in solitary confinement for a large part of that time. I don't like torture.

I don't agree with the death penalty but a whole life term is no cakewalk. On the other hand, he took three other lives, and what's a just punishment for that? It's a tough call. Apparently he is wracked by guilt all the time, if we believe that.

On Shanann, it's awful that he killed her, but in his place I would have wanted to run far, far away. She was emotionally manipulative, demanding, and extraordinarily high-maintenance. She created drama (like with Chris' family) and forced him to choose a side. He was a naturally undemonstrative person and she kept demanding he perform the loving husband in various ways and to constantly prove he loved her. She may well have had some form of Munchhausen's (by proxy?). She was burning through money at an absolutely unsustainable rate.

Facebook sleuths complain that he 'traded down' to Nikki in terms of looks but I absolutely understand the attraction. Nikki had an understated prettiness to her and was a girl you could actually chill and go camping with without having to constantly prove how much you loved her, and how excited you were about xyz, and how awful your parents were to have done that thing, and..... He probably felt she would have been more like a partner.

I also find it absolutely fascinating how much anger Chris, Cindy and especially Nikki generate on the FB groups, and how deeply some women have internalised Shanann, her life and her fate, making her into some kind of saint or deity. It's also been kind of eye-opening to see how traditonal attitudes still are in some parts of the US - Nikki is a 'Jezebel', and a whore and so on. Some of the women on those groups are convinced she invoked Satan or used black magic.

Are other true crime cases like this? As I said this is the only one from the US I've really followed, because of DL. I know the name Casey Anthony of course but I didn't really read up on it at the time and so I don't know if the impact was similar.

It’s very interesting that this documentary is constructed entirely from social media, surveillance videos and pictures and broadcast news reports. Is there any documentary that has done that as of yet? There are no interviews that were done specifically for the documentary and there’s no voiceover leading the way and drawing conclusions. A particularly disturbing part of this shitshow was the condition of the little girls’ bodies after floating in hot oil for several days. The older one was too big for the opening of the tank so Chris had to struggle to jam her through., fracturing her shoulder (I believe.) Their skin was slipping off their bones. And Shannan’s body had extruded the fetus after being placed in that shallow grave beside the tanks.

These gruesome details came out in the documents that were made public at the time.

My theory is that Chris was dissociated from growing up with his horrible mother and father. If you are dissociated, you can't really feel what you really feel about anything. You don't totally feel alive. Because you lost that inner voice that guides you in life towards what you want and need, and raises red flags when something doesn't feel right for you....he just went along with the flow. Until something snapped.

Now he could have gotten psychological help when that something did finally snap. But he did atrocious horrible things instead. He literally went insane. But I am not ready to call him a sociopath or a psychopath. I think he was traumatically dissociated. Like a profound version of PTSD. I think he was a victim of at least mental and emotional abuse, if not more. It's too bad he didn't "break" in a more normal way and sought serious crisis help. He must have felt there were no solutions to his empty life. I'm sure he was indoctrinated by many outside sources to not feel "worth" the effort and support and caregiving that a crisis or trauma counselor could have provided for him.

He should not have touched those kids. There is losing your way, there is being traumatized...and then there is becoming possessed by the devil. To follow my theory, however, the taking of those tender young lives just proves how devalued and abused he himself was as a tender child.

Horrific and sad, all the way around. Let's hope the tragedy of both of those families ends here.

Also -- when you marry someone, and that someone ends up being overbearing, controlling and intolerable...you can't just blame the other person. They are who they are. You do have to hold yourself accountable. You picked that partner. You married them. You procreated with this person. That's all on you.

But again, as I theorized above, if you have no inner voice guiding you, you will not have the inner motivation to pick a better partner. While I haven't watched the Netflix tribute, I wanted to share a few more nuggets that I'm pretty sure weren't mentioned:

Shanann was a stay-at-home mom but had her kids enrolled in daycare for 9 hours a day, 5 days a week, year-round. Her kids were 2 and 4. The daycare was $25,000 a year! Chris would pick them up after work at 4:30 and she had them in bed at 6:30. They were already three months behind on their mortgage, but the daycare payments continued.

They were being sued by their HOA for not paying their dues for over a year. (I think they were $53 a month.) She told her dingbat husband that she had been accidentally sending the checks to the wrong address for over a year 🙄. They were due to make a court appearance in that case a few days after she was murdered.

They had filed bankruptcy in 2015 to the tune of 500k. They were getting ready to do it again. There has been speculation that she had used her daughters' SSNs to secure new lines of credit because no one could understand how they had credit cards so soon after filing bankruptcy.

Then, he should have moved in to a tiny apartment with the new woman and started saving his money. The fallout would have been rough for a year or so, but a lot better than the situation he's in now. He made an awful decision. The worst possible decision. And he was stupid if he thought he could get away with it. In a murder case, the surviving spouse is always the prime suspect.

It seems like many millennials expect McMansions after they get married. I'm Generation X; my parents had two kids, and we lived in a ranch house (one bathroom) for the first ten years of my life. Then my parents upgraded to a modest two-story house. In my hometown, in the sprawl of new developments, none of the new houses are ranch houses. They're all huge McMansions with two-car garages. And it's not a wealthy area, either; most of the people are blue-collar workers. How much house does a family really need? The cost of heating and cooling must be astronomical.

The director wanted the doc to reflect Shannan's experience and didn't want to explore Chris' motives. The volume of social media enabled her to assemble this "experience". The problem is that things are missing like the money problems and things do get mentioned in passing that (her being bossy) or are pretty obvious (the allergy, lupus, etc. stuff) that raise questions about her and the overall state of the marriage. the director said that money didn't come up in Shananarama's video, but that seems odd and being part of an MLM is an elephant in the room for that sort of things. we only get her said of stuff with Chris' parents and really she seems to be isolating Chris from them.

the stated goal of capturing Shannan's experience seems to get broken at points, esp. including the husband's girlfriend in the story--if this was truly Shahanadingdong's experience thenwe'd only hear about Nichol from her. The MLM friend also seems oddly not Shannan's experience either nor would her parents' observations be relevant---basically the director undermines her own argument.

In reality, if you talk to people who work with couples/families with intimate partner violence, the marriages are usually troubled, there are repeated problems with how conflicts get resolved, one or both spouses tends to interact in a coercive often self-esteem attacking way (I'm looking at Thrive saleswoman), and you basically tend to have two immature adults who create a toxic atmosphere. It doesn't have to end in violence, let alone death and no one deserves all that, but it's a context where hero and villain doesn't work and often predator and victim aren't entirely accurate either.

I doubt that he was a borderline, although he apparently had arrests in the past for violence, but I wonder if like the ones attributed to Shannade they may have been false. The above article states that they haven't even been able to sell off the house in foreclosure, supposedly because of the murders. It is chilling to watch any of the "seemingly" mundane live streams she constantly cranked out, because the degree of narcissism and fakery that she displays in them is enough to make you want to vomit your guts out. I've watched enough footage now to have seen Shanann display every form and flavor of contempt towards both her husband and her kids. She rolls her eyes at them, she shushes them, she bosses them; she complains about them, forces them, coerces them; she exposes them, exploits them, invades them, dominates them. There is no nurturing . There is no love. There was no privacy for any of them, ever. It was very Big Brother in that household replete with thought police and doublespeak. A hollow facade for public consumption. As someone upthread alluded, Shanann's world was constructed entirely of fake plywood sets and props. Just try to imagine being married to THAT, and contemplate how well you would THRIVE.

Toxic marriage aside, even more disturbing is the constant theme of humiliating the girls to generate content for her social media presence. This was a woman who was willing to disregard the safety, sanctity, privacy and integrity of her babies and their actual physical bodies. Shanann was willing to reveal every vulnerable moment of those babies' lives for public consumption: the countless doctor visits, showing them in the thin paper dressing gowns. Showing the girls crying, sobbing. Showing the girls scared, confused. Through the relentless online documentation of every single moment and aspect of their young lives, their mother exploited them for public consumption. But alway, always turning the lens back on herself and making it about "mommy's journey." Nothing was ever explored from the child's point of view, and she never alludes to empathizing with her children. These are "Shanann Productions, Inc" films, and as such, she gets top billing and final cut.

I have a strong investment in the welfare of children, stemming from my own childhood experiences. I also I empathize with adults who were abused as children, and am too aware of the hard fact that once a person "ages-out" of childhood, they typically no longer have the public's empathy when the unhealed trauma begins to play out in their adult life. That type of concern is typically reserved for little children.

I'm the person who was theorizing about CW exhibiting signs of depersonalization/dissociation. He wasn't well. If he wasn't overtly or covertly abused in childhood, we can still be fairly certain that being married to Shanann was destroying his soul.

But if we are going to extend empathy to Chris for being abused by his personality-disordered wife, must we also extend it to Shanann, if it were to turn out that she herself was abused in some form as a child? And then, if we are to blame their respective parents for the (theoretical) abuse they may have inflicted on Chris and Shanann, do we extend empathy to those people, too, if it were determined that they themselves all were emotionally, physically or sexually abused in childhood?

There were certainly some shenanigans going on in the DA's office to portray Shanann as Snow White and Chris as the Big Bad Wolf. On the cop's body cam, Nosey Neighbor Nate revealed that the Watts were having loud, screaming fights and he and his wife thought that was the reason Shanann and the kids hauled ass to NC. A few months later when Nate was on Dr. Oz his story changed and he claimed he was exaggerating. That made no sense. Why lie in the middle of an investigation you're trying to help? My suspicion was that he had been "advised".

Also, Shannan's autopsy revealed she had an elevated BAC. The DA was quick to jump in front of a mic to defend her and say that all dead bodies have an elevated BAC. Huh? There is a defense atty, Scott Reich, with a YouTube channel and he said that this is his business for 30 years and he's never heard that.

There was also something going on where the DA moved to get the girls' medical records sealed.

And just to add to the above poster's point about the open DHS case, in the document dump there is a reference to a social worker that Shanann needed to contact while in NC for the summer. Her name and number were there but the comments after were blacked out.

I think it's interesting that both of the wife and husband professed repeatedly to have been "bawling their eyes out" while neither one of them looked capable of that kind of emotion.

I don't know if the Netflix crocumentary covered it, but Scooby went on to give birth to a baby girl who was born with a severe heart defect that required immediate surgery to correct. There’s some fuckery with the house. It’s been pulled from public auction a few times. I’m too stupid to understand the foreclosure nonsense. There was some point that Shanannanana’s parents flew from NC just to have a press conference about people sending them death threats. They also have lawyers in CO, so I’m assuming they were trying to do something with the house. People talk about making it a museum or a shelter for domestic violence victims but good luck getting that past the HOA.

And Sassy Cassie and her fatloaf husband were trying to get her to throw Chris out so they could move in to the Watts house.

I have never seen people live like that before. Entire families couch-surfing (or basement-surfing, if you will). I guess these MLM huns ruin their credit and have to live like refugees.

I seen no problem tearing it down and making it a little pocket park with a few amenities like a sandbox, slide and swings and making it a memorial to the kids. It's a bit of a surprise to me that Thrive wasn't hit harder by all this. Shanann was a Thrive superstar by all accounts but her finances were a disaster. That should've been an alarm bell. But Scooby is still THRIVING

I just watched the doc yesterday. My god no one deserves what happened to her but she was exhausting. If she spoke or text with friends it was about her troubles, she visits her in laws and she suffers the attempted murder of her daughters, if she has a problem with her husband it's her feelings that are the ones that need to be tended to. That was an absurd way to live but the fucking moron shoulda just been an adult and walk away knowing you spend the next 18 years supporting her and accepted it.
