It's a way to get into the mindset and lives of the characters and adds a greater depth to how the audience takes in the characters' relationship. Except the sex scenes were used to promote the movie so you can't separate the fact that people had actual sex FROM the plot of the films. Besides, you could have gotten away with doing the film without people actually having sex or masturbating. "Why did they do it then?" So every damn interview and article about it could use it to draw an audience in.

I don't think of them as "porn" but I don't think of them as mainstream either.

Also I'd add that no one from the main cast of Shortbus has done anything but short films, bit roles and voice overs since they did the film.

To be fair, Chloe Sevigny has worked non stop for years on movies and even a long running TV series or two after "The Brown Bunny." She was on "Big Love" for 5 years and I think by now people have forgotten about it. Mark Rylance was in his mid-50s when he won that Oscar.
