Well?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 15, 2020 12:30 PM |
Yes, she was a one hit wonder, but the kind of one hit wonder that still gets airplay and it's remembered.
There are singers who have several hits but five years after nobody remember a single one.
Black velvet is a great song

That girl could sing, I give her that. You just don’t hear people that can sing like this. Shades of Bonnie Rait and Melissa Ethridge.

I hated that song with a passion.

What is the other song like this?

Had an affair with Robert Plant in the early '90s. His song 29 Palms is about her.

One of the nicest people I ever met. I was working in catering for a smallish Canadian venue back in the late 80s and after her meal she came down to the kitchen and thanked everyone for the great food and service. She also thanked all the stage crew and riggers for their work and gave out signed copies of her CD and t-shirts to everyone and posed for pictures and signed autographs.

I’m with R4. That song was on the radio constantly and I would change the station every time it came on.

I was about 8 years old when this song was all over Top 40 radio. I could remember my mom changing the station in disgust and saying "God I hate this warbling".

Affectionately known in Canada at the time as "A Lotta miles"

I've hated that bitch ever since watching her make fun of Mary Margaret O'Hara's performance on the Juno Awards in the '80s. Luckily, she faded fast. Mary Margaret O'Hara is a Canadian cult icon. Alannah Myles is just another dumb rocker chick.

if you please....if you please... IF YOU PLEASE!

Alannah Myles is quite difficult to work with. There’s a reason she’s a one hit wonder.

Just looked up some recent pictures of her. She looks great! I wonder if Madonna would look like this if she allowed herself to age gracefully and kept her real hair color.

I hated that “Black Velvet” song but I have to say Robin Lee sang it better

R15: No

I heard she was a bit crazy And not easy to work with

It's a strip joint song

I worked for the label that put her flop 1997 album, A Rival, out in the states.
Every media outlet that had dealt with her in the past wouldn’t touch her with a 10 ft pole. She was chronically late, demanding, and when you started talking to her , she would go on long tangents about herself , usually some crude sexual story .
For example, I believe Entertainment Tonight interviewed her in 1993 about her follow up to the Black Velvet album, and asked her about the video, in which she rode a horse. She went on a long tangent in the interview about how she gave the horse an erection.
When my boss called her to get some quotes for a press release, Alannah spent three hours on the phone babbling about a myriad of topics, including her beaver (as she called it).
Anyway, very few media outlets or radio stations wanted to talk to her because of this bizarre behavior. We were able to get her booked to perform at a couple of Gay Pride Festivals, but we had to cancel because: a,) she demanded first class airfare and accommodations for herself and her entourage; and b.) She started telling people that at the label that it made sense that she would be performing at a gay pride festival since all lesbians wanted to fuck her.
She’s nuts.

R22, wow. Well, I like the song now, more than I did then. Probably because it's not played all the time now.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 16, 2020 6:20 PM |
R22 I guess she is REALLY crazy and NOT easy to work with.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 17, 2020 7:06 AM |
She was actually a two hit wonder. Her follow up song "Love Is" made the top 40 in the US.
She had a pretty good run in her native Canada, and had additional chart hits there, as well.

She’s the Kim carnes of the 90s!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 17, 2020 7:37 AM |
r22 is the reason why I love DL.
I heard for years she was difficult but I never understood the reasons. And it was shocking how quickly she lost momentum. I remember there was lots of press about her second album. Much Music did a whole special with her and then the album and first single Song Instead of a Kiss bombed.

I forgot all about her follow up single “Love Is”, I remember that got a lot of airplay. She opened up for Robert Plant one summer, she was kind of sleezy but in a way that wasn’t sexy rather it seemed she was trying too hard. I remember she patted her sweaty self dry with a towel and tossed it into the audience and no one caught it hahahaha. Anyway, it turns out Robert Plant was fucking her so maybe that’s how she landed that spot on the tour.

Did she write all of ‘Black Velvet’ from scratch herself?
Rude, I know, but I have to ask. It’s so fantastic, but her other hits don’t sound anywhere near as good.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 17, 2020 4:18 PM |
No, r29. She didn't even write it. It was written by David Tyson and Christopher Ward.
BTW, Ward was a MuchMusic VJ. If I recall correctly, he was still a VJ on the air when the song came out, or had just quit.
But you're absolutely right. Black Velvet isn't even representative of the album. You would think it's a bluesy-type album, kind of like Bonnie Raitt, but it's very much rock and power ballads. I think a lot of people were disappointed when they purchased the album and the rest wasn't like Black Velvet.
