I am pretty sure than most of the population is mentally ill to some degree, DL just reflects what is going on in the general population. Me included.

I don’t believe there are more mentally ill DL users than offline people we have to deal with at work etc. On DL no one has to pretend, no more masks and it’s allowed to have some fun and make fun of others in a way you can’t usually get away with in daily life.

I think we absolutely have a certain percentage that suffer from mental illness and/or personality defects. But for the most part I think the others who may come off crazy are just normal people blowing off some steam online because they have no way to blow it off in their real lives.

I think you're leaving out a third group. I see this group as comprised of the bigots, the misogynists, the self-loathers, and the all-around-garden-variety misanthropes. Other than the self-loathers, I don't necessarily think these other moral misfits are mentally ill, just ignorant---some of them willfully so. But those with the quirky senses of humor, and those lucky few blessed with the rare gift of genuine wit more than make up for those bereft of love and good will. As for their staggering degree of ignorance, it is no match for the incisive intelligence that so often illuminates many of the posts of the DLers' who choose to share their knowledge (even wisdom, sometimes) with the rest of us less gifted.
