I remember there would always be a Hasslehoff vanity episode every year or so, where his character would beat all of the younger and in better shape lifeguards in an iron man type of race. That was until one year, Hobie was an even more unlikely winner.

It had mediocre to poor ratings the year it was on NBC. The syndicated version was huge world-wide and became a guilty viewing pleasure in the U.S., probably often watched on a Saturday afternoon with the TV on mute.

Pamela Anderson was probably the break-out star and Hasselhoff probably became a bigger star globally and did probably make him more of a cultural icon of the 90s..

Of the younger hunks, Jason Mamoa was probably the only one who became a bigger star afterwards. Although that was a few years later, I don't think Baywatch was any sort of spring board for him. He completely changed his look later.

I remember when cable TV cable TV came to India in the early 90s and we started getting all the American sitcoms and series. I would watch all of them especially Baywatch. Some seasons there was not a speedo in sight and the only slow motion runs were the women and Hasselhoff (probably to appease his ego) .
