DL Book Club: Finding Freedom by Scobie and Harkle

The book comes out tomorrow (today in the UK) and a digital version should be online in a few hours. Reviews and revelations and pointless bitchery for all!

lol, Lainey is doing a sit-down interview with Omid on E-talk (Canadian try-hard entertainment show) tomorrow. I'll bet that's going to be 'fair and balanced reporting'

One of the 'authors', Carolyn Durant has been very reluctant to do any media prior to the launch. She's been near invisible. Odd.

If you have diabetes, take care when reading.

I'm about halfway through. They just got engaged. Some highlights: dangling tendrils in the first paragraph, Diana on the first page. Somehow they hold off on talking about Harry's grief until about page 100 (ebook wise).

For a book that claims to want to dispel the narrative, it props up two very negative ones: she's fame-hungry and he's an oversensitive mess.

Some swipes at Kate, Pippa and Carole (so far).

by Anonymousreply 8August 11, 2020 7:03 AM

The book claims they were outed to the press by a staffer of Andrew's.

Lots of stories about things when they were totally alone. Yeah, they didn't get interviewed for this at ALL. No way.

"Meghan, known to friends and Meg" and "Jessica, known to friends as Jess"

Wow Scobie, what shocking details.

The book does mention corona in the final chapter so it's possible there have been last-minute edits. And a shoutout to the "famously thin-skinned" US President.

by Anonymousreply 10August 11, 2020 7:12 AM

Her divorce with Trevor (too controlling) and breakup with Cory (he wouldn't commit) were THEIR FAULT. Meg is the perfect partner always.

The book claims that Meghan's decision not to show Archie at the Christening was in direct retaliation for the fact that he was not given a title and the 'protection' she apparently believes comes with a title:

"While she came under attack for breaking tradition and not allowing the media or the public a glimpse of baby Archie on his special day, Meghan didn’t care, according to the book authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand.

Instead she told a friend: "The same people who have been abusing me want to see me serve my child on a silver platter.

"A child who is not going to be protected and doesn’t have a title. How does that make sense? Tell that to any mother in the world."

The book also confirms that Meghan was indeed the author of the pre-Tig blog about Hollywood, called "A Working Actress".

The book claims that the fact that she was behind the anonymous blog was one of the "worst-kept secrets" surrounding her.

Skimming that Working Actress blog—mercifully not as arch and pretentious as The Tig—she mentions working in England for an extended period of time. What would that have been? Seems like most of her credits are one-off guest appearances on tv.

by Anonymousreply 16August 11, 2020 1:47 PM

I noticed that too, r16.

In the blog she also briefly mentions working on Broadway - and we know she was never anywhere near there either.

"Finding Freedom: Meghan and Harry Whinge for England in a self-pitying, juicy moanathon" by Harry Mount

Telegraph review copy:

"Finding Freedom is one massive moanathon – a one-sided, highly biased, self-pitying account of the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. And it’s utterly gripping.

The authors deny they’ve interviewed Harry and Meghan. Still, their authors’ note acknowledges they have been “accompanying, observing and interacting with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”. The juicy details are so precise and private that they can only have come straight from the horses’ mouths.

The Sussexes’ main whinge is against the press’s skewed view of their relationship. But when the Sussexes air their one-sided account in this extraordinarily sycophantic book, somehow that’s OK.

Two worlds – and two forms of PR – collided when Harry and Meghan got together. One is the American, schmaltzy, gushing, self-serving, highly litigious world – and this book is clearly written for the American market (“Harry deeply craves normalcy”). The other is the Queen’s world – never apologise, explain, give interviews or go to law. One form of PR led to the departure of the Sussexes from royal life after barely a year. The other has seen the Queen reign peerlessly for 68 years.

But then the Queen doesn’t take offence like the Sussexes do – on an Olympian scale. For example, there’s Prince William’s innocent advice to his brother soon after he met Meghan: “Don’t feel like you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”

R17, admittedly I was just skimming but I thought the Broadway post was a repost of another actor’s experiences.

In the words of “this girl”, according to Scobie and Durand, “Harry heard the tone of snobbishness that was anathema to his approach to the world… There was a thin line between caring and condescending.” The supposed slights continue. Meghan refused to go to Pippa Middleton’s wedding service because of the Sun splash that day - “It’s Meghan v Pippa in the Wedding of the Rears”.

The final straw came at this year’s Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. William and Kate sat with their backs to the couple, only chatting with Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex, also behind them. Meghan apparently tried to make eye contact with Kate but the duchess barely acknowledged her. According to a friend, after that cold shoulder, she never wanted to set foot into “anything royal ever again”.

Harry and Meghan (or Meg, as he calls her) go ballistic at the slightest slight, like Henry VIII on a bad day. Yes, the tabloids can be pretty rough but, actually, the British press – and the British people (barring a few disgusting racists) – welcomed Meghan with open arms. But if you’re looking for offence, you’ll always find it.

Before their wedding, Harry went nuts when Angela Kelly, the Queen’s trusted dresser, didn’t get a tiara to her for a “tiara hair trial”. The tabloids said Meghan insisted on spray-bottle air fresheners to spritz around “musty” St George’s Chapel. In fact, according to Meghan's version in this book, “the discreet, Baies-scented air diffusers… had been okayed by all parties involved.” If you’re going to pick a row, why have one over Baies-scented air diffusers?

Whatever the truth is, you won’t get an objective account from this book. It lauds the “go-get-’em approach Meghan has had ever since, aged 11, she wrote a letter of protest to national leaders, including Hillary Clinton, over a sexist soap ad”. We hear about “Meghan’s willingness to help others and her drive to excel”.

Like so many rich and famous people used to getting their way, they’re astonished when they don’t. Harry tells a friend, “I’m tired of people covering engagements and then going off to write some rubbish about what someone is wearing.”

Surely Harry realises he can’t dictate his own headlines? Meghan isn’t much brighter, judging by the bons mots from her lifestyle blog The Tig: “Being yourself is the prettiest thing a person can be”; “Travel often – getting lost will help you find yourself.”

In their pampered bubble – sashimi is delivered to their cottage at Soho Farmhouse; they sit by an open fire tended by a butler at Babington House, Somerset – they can’t bring themselves to defer to the royal system that delivers those privileges.

At their crucial Sandringham meeting with the Queen, “Harry felt as though he and Meghan had long been sidelined by the institution and were not a fundamental part of its future.” That was reflected, he thought, in the pictures on the Queen’s desk in her Christmas message: the Cambridges and their children, Charles and Camilla, Philip and George VI, but nothing of the Sussexes or their baby son.

They wanted a future as semi-working royals – having their cake, eating it and not accepting the diminishing returns you get the further you get from the throne. The Queen made it clear it wouldn’t work.

What a needless, never-ending nightmare that fairytale wedding has turned into. As Meghan herself said in March this year, as she hugged Omid Scobie, “It didn’t have to be this way.”

Why are the Windsor men so reliant on domineering women? George VI, Edward VIII, Charles, Andrew, Harry. William seems to be the exception. (Don't know enough about Edward and Sophie to comment.)

If you aren't hustling a guy, you don't need to worry about taking it slow or his brother not liking you. If it's real, it's real. If it a whirlwind con job, you rush and blind him, isolate and trick him, and then you alienate him from everyone is his life who came before you. Except it's worthless when his status and wealth depend on his family.

Mission accomplished, dummy.

Meghan is perfect in every way and deserves to be Queen, not Kate.

“ “Meghan was extremely grateful for the Queen’s generosity. It was an honor to be taken under the Queen’s wing so soon after her marriage. Kate’s first engagement, despite knowing the Queen for years, was a full ten months after her wedding to Prince William. The Queen had a level of confidence in Meghan, because as a Palace source shared, “she handles these situations flawlessly because she’s always well prepared and respectful. She’s very clever and good at understanding what’s required.” Sure enough, Meghan, in an elegant cream cape Givenchy sheath dress from her wedding gown “designer, Clare Waight Keller, gave a near-flawless performance on the train trip. (Although she was criticized by the tabloids for not wearing a hat, despite the fact it was not required.)”

“While royals pulling in big crowds is no new feat, there was something different about the Sussexes’ oceanic visit. Young people who never had interest in the British monarchy had suddenly become engaged with the royals. Teenage girls and boys, many of them Indigenous Australians, spoke about how they saw Meghan as a symbol of female empowerment or a face that represented them in a way other members of the royal family hadn’t before.”

The press whinging begins in full in Chapter 17

“Will and Kate are so mean!!!”

by Anonymousreply 33August 11, 2020 3:19 PM

From the Daily Mail:
Scobie told BBC Radio 4's Today programme how he felt Harry and Meghan had 'clearly tried to do their best to make it work' before Megxit took place in March.
He added: 'They even went as far as presenting a potential roadmap for how they would navigate their roles moving forward, and ultimately it was the institution that turned back on them and told them what they had presented just wasn't an option.
'And so this is a couple that really wanted to make it work, but ultimately I think the setup of the royal institution just isn't built for change on that dramatic a level.'

What did she think? It's a centuries old institution, and the queen had been running it for seventy years. Harry is only sixth in l;ine to the throne: why should they change to accommodate the two of them?

I guess this shouldn't surprise me, because so many Dataloungers also believe Harry should be William's equal in the eyes of the monarchy (even though there are three children who stand between the two of them and the throne), as if that whole institution is about equality. it is not: it is expressly about hierarchy dependent on birth order. But I would think Harry--who grew up his whole life knowing the scroe--and Meghan, who went to a good university, would both be smart enough to know that.

by Anonymousreply 34August 11, 2020 4:44 PM
Why are the Windsor men so reliant on domineering women? George VI, Edward VIII, Charles, Andrew, Harry.

Except for Andrew (who doesn't belong in this list--he is not dominated by Fergie), they all had cold or absent mothers at crucial points in their childhood and adolescence.

That link imgoes to a droning plastic faced guy R38.

by Anonymousreply 40August 11, 2020 6:00 PM

I'm not at all certain that Camilla is actually domineering.

She didn't come off a remotely dominant in the leaked phone calls (tampongate), she waited for him for decades without making any demands, and now, she goes where Charles goes, does what he likes to do, and in no way cuts a domineering figure at events with him.

She's blousy with a maternal figure, but I don't get the impression that she challenges him on much. More I get the opposite impression: she coddles him in all things. Of course she can angle to get things she wants via coddling, but that's not the same as dominating him.

by Anonymousreply 41August 11, 2020 6:04 PM

R40 that's Scobie. I'm not sure what's more distracted, the work he's done on his eyes or his brow

by Anonymousreply 42August 11, 2020 6:35 PM

"‘Sipping coffee of tea together in the kitchen every morning became a ritual. Then they took turns making breakfast from the organic seasonal produce they ordered from nearby Daylesford Farm or the groceries they had delivered by Waitrose."

OMG, a couple had breakfast together. Wow, Scobie, you've surely found the important facts.

One thing I've noticed from the book (I'm at the pregnancy) is that everyone (except the Men in Grey) LOVE Meg. And Harry is as thin skinned as Donald Trump. Way to make him look good.

by Anonymousreply 43August 11, 2020 6:38 PM

OH MY SIDES!

“The senior courtiers who Diana used to refer to as “men in gray suits” were concerned that the global interest in and popularity of the Sussexes needed to be reined in. In the short period of time since their fairy-tale wedding, Harry and Meghan were already propelling the monarchy to new heights around the world. The Sussexes had made the monarchy more relatable to those who had never before felt a connection. However, there were concerns that the couple should be brought into the fold; otherwise, if left as they were, the establishment feared their popularity might eclipse that of the royal family itself. “To palace officials wondering how to handle the couple there was another figure who looms large when you think of young women using a royal platform for global charitable crusading: Harry’s own mother,” the political editor Tim Shipman wrote in the Sunday Times, quoting a source as saying, “The danger to them is that Meghan is going to be bigger than Diana.”

Excerpt From: Omid Scobie. “Finding Freedom.”

by Anonymousreply 51August 11, 2020 7:06 PM

from the book:
Extremely organized, Meghan immediately impressed Harry with her packing skills. She has always taken pride in being a great packer – going as far as layering dryer sheets in between her clothes to keep them smelling fresh and no matter her destination always bringing tea-tree oil for bites, cuts and pimples – and her skills were appreciated by the prince.

by Anonymousreply 52August 11, 2020 7:07 PM

This is the best quotation from the book!
Theirs was a love story that took hold in Africa – where now Meghan, on the last day of an incredible three-week stay, stretched her body into the perfect warrior pose. She quietly took in her surroundings from the grounds of their final home away from home on this trip, a modern villa in Livingstone, Zambia, just under ten miles upstream from Victoria Falls. The rising sun washed over her makeshift yoga garden, while an exotic flock of birds that looked as if they had just had their tails dipped in pots of colourful paints serenaded her.

Princess Michael of Kent is not by any stretch of the imagination Meghan's "in-law." She is the wife of Harry's grandmother's cousin.

Lake Como with the Clooneys and Eugenie and Jack. Now, how would the "Finding Freedom" authors know this information? Did Meghan name drop?

Lots of stories in the DM today because the book is released.

- The Queen gave Meghan a "master class" on royal protocol (wouldn't someone be assigned to do it?)

- Prince Charles was like a "second father" to Meghan (well, she ghosted her real father so I guess she needed a new one).

- William's aides "threw them under a bus" (ugh? Wouldn't they have their own aides? What would they have to do with the Cambridge aides?).

- Meghan "fell hard" for Harry after seeing him play with Jessica Mulroney's kids (another one ghosted).

- Meghan felt under attack for keeping Archie's christening private. It was like she had to "serve him on a platter" to the public.

- Meghan's faith in God plays a central role in her life (does she even attend church very much?), it got her througth the darkest hours and she used to gather together the Suits cast for a prayer circle before filming.

- Why her first marriage failed - Meghan grew apart from her "brash" producer husband because he didn't like her newfound fame on Suits.

- Meghan did take offence to Princess Michael of Kent's blackamoor brooch and thought it was insensitive to her African American heritage.

- Archie's night nurse had to be dismissed because she was "unprofessional".

- The Sussex pair didn't want live-in staff (what about the night nurse above?) like the Cambridges (slap down meow).

- Eugenie and Harry were very good friends but Eugenie was hurt when Meghan announced her pregnancy at her wedding (meow).

- Russian hackers stole "hundreds" of personal photos of Harry and Meghan in massive security breach (why haven't the Russians released any of these photos?).

That is all I can take of this shit. The "true"story (aka bitchfest) is: The Sussexes are VICTIMS and everyone else is to blame for them leaving the Royal Family. They are not responsible for their behavior because it's other people who are mean, racist and sexist.

Lordy, I love it! Just when they were getting dull, Finding Freedom delivers much more than I could've dreamed. Just read the list of embarrassing quotes in the DM, and they are hilarious. Not only did they provide all the detail for the book, I'm now convinced Meghan edited it herself. It's the same Tig/women's mag tone, and guess what? She's the hard-working, gorgeous, accomplished, admired star of the whole damn show! The parts about their courtship read like a Harlequin romance.

This will make a great cable mini-series one day.

The BEST excerpt.

“At their lowest moments, Harry and Meghan appreciated the support of the #SussexSquad, their global fandom who support the couple online. The passionate supporters, men and women from all backgrounds, regularly defended them from negativity in the press and pushed the Sussexes’ activities into the top Twitter trends. Inspired by Harry and Meghan’s charity work, the “Squad” has even gone on to launch initiatives of their own, such as the #GlobalSussexBabyShower to raise $50,000 for children’s charities and planting 100,000 trees around the world in the couple’s names. “To see that support and positivity means a lot,” Harry told a friend.”

by Anonymousreply 68August 11, 2020 7:49 PM

Clearly they gave Scobie and Durand FULL ACCESS while he wrote this, just like Diana did with Andrew Morton for his book. How else would he be able to reveal their private moments together and her private thoughts at seeing the blackamoor brooch at the Christmas lunch?

Charles and William will see right through this obvious ploy. They won't read the book, but they'll read (or be told about) the book reviews.

Harry and Meghan are stupid to diss William and Kate so openly when its clear they cooperated with the authors. Within 20 years William and Kate will likely be crowned while Harry and Meghan will only be in their 50s. They will want that income from the Crown.

by Anonymousreply 69August 11, 2020 7:53 PM

Thanks to all the excerpts as I will not be spending money on the book.

One must have Harry’s IQ or the IQ of a gnat yo not conclude that Scobie wrote the book with Meghan. Unless Scabies was there himself to witness the romance novel descriptions of African love fest between the two narcissists, the. It’s clear as day this is all Meghan.

Just as 1992’s Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, by Andrew Morton, gave readers an intimate look at the royal family from the perspective of a disgruntled member of the firm, so this book repeats the trick with Diana’s younger son and his wife, Meghan Markle. What this semi-sequel lacks in novelty, it makes up for in cattiness (aimed largely – and this is the only real surprise of the book – at the woman born Kate Middleton, now known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. We’ll return to that in a tick.)

I think Finding Free Stuff (and all the variations) captures these two perfectly.

by Anonymousreply 76August 11, 2020 8:21 PM

Well, this all confirms something I'd observed about Meg and Harry - half the quotes are about them taking massive offense at their press coverage... and they're both stupid enough to think they can control their press coverage if they're allowed to sue and complain in public.

Ironically, this led them to leave the BRF, one of the few institutions in the world that has partial control over the press.

R66 - The Sussex "Squad" has become increasingly notorious for the threatening, vindictive, social media activities that Harry and Meghan claim to be combating. They have threatened journalists lives and families, threatened law suits (our Klan Grannie Troll is one and you can tell from her posts that she's one of them), and generally exhibited the sort of sociopathic behaviour one expects of people who worship people they don't know.

The Sussex Squad would be first on the list of the types of social media behaviour lately excoriated publicly by Harry.

Harry and Meghan are borderline delusional.

Please stop with all these offensive comments. It really is time that we think of the true victims of this book, their Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of California, who must be reeling at this breach of privacy by the authors of this scandalous”book”, who have managed read the minds of our young hero and heroine. I’m sure Datalounge’s own Darfur Orphan is full of concern for these two game-changing, paradigm-breaking young people, who have been so cruelly abused by a world not yet ready for their insightful truths.

That brooch depicts not just any Moor, but specifically depicts a heavily bejewelled and therefore clearly powerful Moor of Venice.

I doubt it is a depiction of Othello, the powerful General in the Venetian army, but it easily could stand in for a depiction of Othello.

I posted this in the Harry thread but thought I'd put it here as well.

The book describes Harry going into a multi-day rage at the Inskip wedding after paparazzi managed to take some photos of them. It makes him sound unhinged. He was "angry and shouting" in their villa "while Meghan was concerned." Meghan had never seen him" like this." Even his friends remarked that he was in a "dour" mood. Usually she could calm him down out of his moods, but not this time. She'd never seen "this side of him" before.

Perhaps he does struggle with something like BPD.

I love Meg and Harry, they are THE most entertaining celebrities of 2020!!

The world is being devastated by a pandemic, millions are facing unemployment and evictions, and I consider myself fortunate to be working in a hospital and hoping the supply of PPE will last... and those twats expect the world to be sorry for them because they had to deal with the horrors of bad press, in adequate free mansions, poor tiara service, and occasional possible snubs!

by Anonymousreply 91August 11, 2020 9:50 PM

Has anyone read it? Apparently it claims the much-circulated story about her wanting to wear the tiara with the big emeralds is not true, but I want to find out what really happened with her tiara choice for the wedding.

I also want to find out what are the nasty things in it about Carole Middleton (she gets attacked in this book too, apparently, and I cannot imagine what she could do to offend Meghan).

Friday nights, when her sorority sisters were all going out to parties, Meg was headed to professors’ houses to babysit.’

I've loved this quote; it's more like "Meg was headed to professors' houses to deliver blowjobs and whatever other sexual favors were needed to get ahead"

Lord, this whole thing is so incredibly cringe inducing & grotesque; even Vanity Fair, that normally gives the Harkles good publicity, is rolling their eyes at this one. And Scobie is such a creepy looking thing: he's like the Jonathan Cheban to Smeg's Kim Kardashian: the diva mean girl and her effeminate, pathetic sycophant, while poor stupid Harry just comes off like a chump.

by Anonymousreply 98August 11, 2020 11:13 PM

One thing that's not mentioned either about the 2020 Commonwealth service is that Meg's Kermit outfit was a deliberate snub to the Queen: the women's dress code for the Commonwealth ceremony is to wear blue, red or white.

It can be any shade, so everything from eggshell to navy to grey-blue is fine, Bright red to maroon-red is fine, any shade of white or cream, and even patterns are all fine etc etc, but solid bright green is definitively not on that list because it's not associated with the Commonwealth.

Maybe she did it on purpose, maybe she didn't, but given the rest of her antics, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the former.

by Anonymousreply 99August 11, 2020 11:29 PM

Seriously, who starts a letter to their own father with "It is with a heavy heart..."?

by Anonymousreply 100August 11, 2020 11:33 PM

R100 Someone very, very aware that the letter is not going to remain private.

She might as well have issued a public statement.

Wow, R85 - were you there?!?!? That’s like totally awesome access to the British Royal Family!

by Anonymousreply 102August 11, 2020 11:56 PM

Meghan is ALWAYS performing. She is never herself. I would not be surprised if she panics sometimes wondering even if she has a core "real" self.

I don't know that she knew the letter to her father would be published so soon, but she was clearly performing in it given all the cheesy clichés. i would think it more likely she was thinking, "This will be published in a book someday, and it will show how i was so sad I pretended to be... er, how sad I was... no, make that, how sad I AM that I had to cut Daddy out of my life. But they'll see the proof that he made me do it! Plus, they'll admire my calligraphy. It's as perfect as I am!"

by Anonymousreply 103August 11, 2020 11:57 PM

Speaking of the famous Letter, did Meghan's hagiographer Omid Scobie make any mention of his own February 2019 comment to Good Morning America that Meghan wrote the letter to her father in the full expectation that it would be published? I'm betting he left the fact that he said this publicly - AFTER he had started working on his book - out of the book entirely:

"The royal contributor said: “While the purpose of Meghan’s letter was very much to repair the relationship with the father, she knew in her heart of heart’s that this was going to be released to the papers.

“Thomas has a record of this. This is exactly the man she knows.

“So, many of those things in that letter were written with the public in mind. She very much wanted to set the record straight.”

Scathing from the Telegraph... yet fair in that it just takes the blow job and tears it apart...

Finding Freedom review: Harry and Meghan whinge for Britain in a self-pitying, juicy moanathon

3/5

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have an extraordinary ability to take offence, if this schmaltzy account of Megxit is to be believed

Finding Freedom is one massive moanathon – a one-sided, highly biased, self-pitying account of the relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 105August 12, 2020 12:21 AM

But then the Queen doesn’t take offence like the Sussexes do – on an Olympian scale. For example, there’s Prince William’s innocent advice to his brother soon after he met Meghan: “Don’t feel like you need to rush this. Take as much time as you need to get to know this girl.”

In the words of “this girl”, according to Scobie and Durand, “Harry heard the tone of snobbishness that was anathema to his approach to the world… There was a thin line between caring and condescending.”

The supposed slights continue.

Harry tells a friend, “I’m tired of people covering engagements and then going off to write some rubbish about what someone is wearing.”

by Anonymousreply 106August 12, 2020 12:22 AM

As Meghan herself said in March this year, as she hugged Omid Scobie, “It didn’t have to be this way.”

by Anonymousreply 107August 12, 2020 12:22 AM

R92 there was a slight swipe at Carole (and Pippa) being concerned about the Harkles overshadowing Pippa's wedding.

Typical Harkles: throw in something inconsequential that only serves to annoy Will and Kate. There's a lot of random digs at Kate that serve no purpose whatsoever.

The fact that the Harkles aren't coming out against the book (when a lot of the stories don't paint them in the most flattering light) is very telling.

I'm at the Pregnancy and it's been brought up at least twice how much Harry values privacy and hates paparazzi and tabloids being around Meghan. I look forward to seeing how they justify moving to LA.

BORING!!!

“But while the trip had been a hit with Meghan, senior courtiers back in the UK were spitting out their morning tea when they saw her lavish baby shower thrown by friends turn into a media circus with what looked like carefully stage-managed paparazzi walks of the duchess in big black sunglasses from her hotel to her car and a laundry list of insider party details reported by US press.

“It’s fair to say that the optics of the somewhat flashy shower did not go down well with certain individuals at the Palace,” a senior aide revealed. Meghan was often criticized for being too Hollywood, meaning too flashy. Especially for the reserved aesthetic of the monarchy. “I think a few people that had defended her over the months felt a little disappointed. But sometimes in this role you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Ultimately, the trip was just Meghan’s friends celebrating a really exciting moment in her life.”

That’s all very strange. She had done many TV guest spots and small movie roles pre 2011 (when Suits debuted) so I don’t see how she couldn’t have had one.

You can get two waivers, usually, as a non union performer without joining SAG-AFTRA... but after that you have to (?)

R98 I tend to think Kate had no fucks to give after Harry got prank called by fake Greta. In the extensive phone conversation with fake Greta, Harry told her that he’d help her become a part of the family by marrying George, IIRC. It’s a joke but dimwit was obviously half serious. It was egregious seeing as he grew up under the specter of people with ulterior agendas targeting him and his brother. So why do that with George who’s still very young. I’m sure Kate didn’t find it funny as a mother protective of her young child.

Can you imagine if the roles were reversed and it was Will or Kate discussing Archie to an outsider that way? There would be accusations galore and possible lawsuit, I wouldn’t put if past Meg with her love of litigation.

So how the fuck should Kate have behaved towards those two narcissistic assholes whom she unfortunately have to deal with at that time. Especially after Harry and Meghan made a big fuss over protocol and not able to walk with senior royals. Frankly Kate showed a side that day that made me like her more, I’m one who thinks she’s fine but boring. But she showed a side of her that says quiet, introverted people should not be fucked with.

Those Nasty Royals!!

“While Meghan had never gotten accustomed to all the reporting on her, by the end of her pregnancy, she couldn’t bear the unnecessary criticism. The maternity clothes she chose or how she held her bump were all fodder for the tabloids. It was as if she couldn’t even be pregnant in a way that was acceptable to the media. She likened the attacks to a friend as “death by a thousand cuts.”

Meghan was suffering terribly. As she anxiously expected the arrival of her first child, she felt fragile and very emotional. Harry tried his best to be everything his wife needed, but he felt this was the moment for his family to step in. But no one in the royal family made that move.”

They will come after you,” he said. “Look at Diana.” But so much had changed since the time of Diana, Meghan reasoned: “How bad could it be?” ”

“Harry and Meghan already had a name ready to go when Archie was born, because the couple had known all along that they were having a boy. According to a source, they settled on their son’s name some time during the final week of her pregnancy. The couple wanted something traditional, a name that was powerful even without a title in front of it. Archie, meaning strength and bravery, fit the bill. “They thought about Archibald for all of one second,” a friend of the couple said with a laugh. “He was always going to be little Archie.”

The picture, taken by the couple’s personal photographer Chris Allerton, was a hugely significant moment for the royal family. There, for the first time, was much-needed visibility around race and inclusion at the heart of the monarchy. “That made me proud,” Meghan told a friend.”

I hate to break this to her, but she is not and never has been a feminist. Her misogyny is shocking, but not really. She is a woman who sees every other woman as competition. Heaven for fend that other woman be attractive/popular/sexy/impressive body/nice hair/successful, etc. MM will hate/target that woman and want to do whatever she has to in order to appease the raging jealousy seeping out of her every pore. She will seethe at the way she is made to feel and end up hating the object of her rage. Women like MM are an insult to true feminists. I'm not buying that she has ever bonded with or felt a sisterhood with other women. (Unless they can benefit her in some way.) Even then, she shows no loyalty. (Opening her legs to flash Serena's very rich husband in front of all the cameras at Serena's tennis match.) There is a reason she has very few friends.

I wish her well, but this book makes her look absolutely ridiculous.

Forgot the quote for R137:

Harry and Meghan had agreed they didn’t want their home filled with staff. Harry had seen that situation at William’s home (the Cambridges had a live-in housekeeper and a full-time, live-in nanny), and didn’t want the same for his own family. “He and Meghan liked the idea that when they went to bed at night, it was just the three of them in the house. Cozy and private. In the mornings, Harry usually made his own coffee. When they had meetings at the large kitchen table with staff members, it was often Meghan who made a pot of tea and put chocolates or energy balls on a plate for nibbling.”

“With the controversy reaching its apex just days before the launch of Travalyst, the sustainable-tourism initiative he had been working on for most of the year, Harry regretted not heeding the advice of Sara. She had warned him about a potential media storm if he flew back on a private jet from Google Camp, which he attended to preview Travalyst. “Instagram quickly become a vital part of the Sussexes’ new media strategy. They beat out the pope to break the Guinness world record for the fastest accumulation of one million followers in twenty-four hours. In fact, within a day, they had 2.1 million. And they kept pace with William and Kate’s account, which remained @KensingtonRoyal. “It took a little time, but I’m starting to see Meg’s mark on so many things,” a friend said. “Sometimes those posts on the account remind me of her Tig days, and I love that. Her voice is getting louder every day.”

“As their popularity continued to grow, so did Harry and Meghan’s difficulty in understanding why so few were looking out for their interests inside the Palace. They were a major draw for the royal family. According to a New York Times article that compared the online popularity of the Sussexes to the Cambridges from November 2017 to January 2020, “Harry-and-Meghan-related searches accounted for 83 percent of the world’s curiosity in the two couples.”

by Anonymousreply 160August 12, 2020 2:15 AM

Kate was obviously perfectly decent. Inviting her over and making vegan food, sending her flowers.

Why is how well Markle does in her new job somehow Kate's responsibility? Isn't Markle a Feminist Icon? A Feminist Icon with a husband who grew up in the firm and so someone who knew the ropes even better than married-in Kate ever could? Why didn't Harry guide her?

No. The truth is that Meghan wanted - immediately - the level of respect that Kate had earned over a decade, and wanted to have Kate bow to her to demonstrate to the world that she was Kate's equal. She's nowhere near Kate's equal. Kate is shy, reserved and sensible. Shy and reserved people sensibly withdraw when they know people are trying to use them. Kate behaved perfectly and showed her typical good judgement to not have allowed Meghan to invade her life and ride her coattails, as the latter clearly wanted to do.

Meghan whining about not getting a ride (when Meghan had her own driver at the ready) to a local shop says so much more about Meghan than it does about Kate. Kate was right to foresee and avoid a potential media scrum, but here Meghan is, four years later, whining about it still... tells you so much about both women.

After the famous SURVIVE NOT THRIVE:

“The day after the documentary aired, William’s thoughts were revealed by a palace courtier. Several outlets, including the BBC and The Sun, quoted a Kensington Palace aide stating that Prince William was “worried” about his brother. He felt the couple was “in a fragile place.” A source close to Harry later said, “It’s these games the couple were eager to get away from. Rather than reaching out to them, someone close to William briefed the press on his views about Harry’s mental health. He thought it was low to be sharing opinion like that so publicly.” A friend of the prince added, [bold]“Harry felt that William and the people around him were too concerned with press coverage.” [/bold]

Re the Harkles new move, to their new house (discussed in the Down and Out in LA thread, now paywalled): the sleuthy LSA bitches have already figured out where it is. It was fairly easy to determine using online real estate sites, if you search for high-priced home closings in the past 90 days in the SB area there are only a dozen or so sales.

Someone crossed checked the background in Harry's Travelyst video from a few weeks ago, with the website interior home photos, and came up with a likely match.

Will say, moving to Montecito/SB does lend credence to their stated desire for more privacy. Not many paps up in those areas. Dollars to bet though that she sets up pap walks when she's down in LA on business.

“ “Even a source close to the couple admitted that while Harry and Meghan had put a lot of thought into this immense transition, they could also be “impatient and impulsive.” “They run hot in a way,” the source said. “The reactions in individual moments are definitely not the same, a month, a few weeks, down the line.”

The Queen was anything but fevered. Despite her sadness at the thought of losing the Sussexes as working royals, she could see it was necessary for the couple to completely separate from the institution. No one should be forced into something they don’t want to do. But if Harry thought that their public proposal would result in their getting exactly what they wanted, “he was sorely mistaken,” said a senior courtier. “The Queen understood the difficulties they faced, but the rules don’t bend for anyone.” Buckingham Palace issued a further statement stating that a solution to Harry and Meghan’s requests would be reached “within days, not weeks.”

"They are not houseguests of Oprah or anyone else, they bought this home themselves. This is where they want to continue their lives after leaving the UK.

“This is the first home either of them has ever owned. It has been a very special time for them as a couple and as a family — to have complete privacy for six weeks since they moved in."

They bought this house **themselves**? And not with help from the BRF they keep shitting on so hard?

What I can't understand is why they (their "sources", same thing) go out and tell the media that they've moved, and where they moved to. It takes about 5-10 mins to figure out pretty much what they purchased, with the given details. In their insatiable ongoing need to show off and keep themselves in the press, they compromise their own privacy. Smh.

Meghan better watch out. It's one thing to keep Harry at home when he's out of his element and lonely in L.A.

It's an entirely different thing to keep Harry from straying when he's in Santa Barbara, where all his Polo playing friends will be visiting nonstop with their hot hangers-on, sisters, cousins, girlfriends, all of whom can ride and hunt and all of whom understand both the world Harry actually came from and the world he wants to escape to.

He could end up down in Argentina with some gorgeous young friend of Poncho's before you know it.

A lot of the hilarious bits have been quoted above; I'm going to add some more so you don't have to go to the DM or the book:

On her bachelorette party for one of the plump white ladies she attended Wimbledon with):

"The entire event was classic Meghan: simple yet indulgent, fun in a quiet and intimate way – and all meticulously planned. From the time she was a student, juggling school and jobs, through her years grinding out auditions for bit parts, to her becoming a successful TV star who continued to push the boundaries of her career by launching a popular lifestyle website, Meghan always had a plan."

by Anonymousreply 190August 12, 2020 5:42 AM

The description of Jessica (as if readers don't know what Botox Barbie actually looks like):

‘Jessica and her husband Ben – the eldest son of the former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney and the host of the entertainment show eTalk – were the city’s hottest young power couple. She parlayed the brand-name Canadian family she married into and her sense of style into a boutique career as an influencer, stylist, and wedding planner. Her Instagram feed was filled with pictures of domestic perfection – like Jessica with her long, blown-out brown hair, her blue eyes fringed in black lashes, reading a book on the floor with her adorable twin sons, Brian and John, her lean legs crossed and on her feet a pair of sky-high black stilettos.’

by Anonymousreply 191August 12, 2020 5:43 AM

Just priceless:

‘Harry is admittedly tough to impress, but he almost froze when he walked into the room and saw Meghan. He knew she was beautiful – he had seen the photos on her Instagram account and online – but she was even more stunning in person. Meghan wasn’t just beautiful. She was also different from women he was used to meeting, and Harry was intimidated by new situations’

by Anonymousreply 192August 12, 2020 5:45 AM

Look out, Beyonce!

‘Meghan, however, threw him off immediately. It wasn’t just her charming freckles, perfect smile, or American accents. Meghan is someone who works a room very well. In social settings, all eyes are drawn to her. She laughs a little louder, glows a little brighter. She’s self-assured in a way that attracts attention.’

by Anonymousreply 193August 12, 2020 5:46 AM

I always had an off feeling about this chick, but thought it was my own "no one good enough for Harry" bullshit. I remember seeing months before the announcement of their engagement, a "pap" style photo of her carrying some kind of grocery bag that had to do with feeding the world or some such wokeness. It was carefully turned to hit the camera, as was she.

I wanted it to be a good thing, but after the stunt she pulled at Huge's wedding. That was unforgivable. And creepy, and the beat went on.

What pisses me off the most, however, is that fucking Kate has become the anointed one when she has always been a lazy boring mess. MM is the BEST thing that ever happened to Kate and don't think she doesn't know it. ALL of the heat is off of her, and she can be as lazy as ever because nothing short of murder will ever make her look worse than MM has managed to do. So for that alone, fuck you Markle.

Their response to all the criticism of her walking in front of Harry (neglecting that feminists don't usually need men to always let them go first):

‘Harry was unusually candid for someone with his title, but he was also every bit the gentleman. Wherever they went, and to this day, he gestures for Meghan to go first. The short walk from the living room would have been no different’

by Anonymousreply 196August 12, 2020 5:48 AM

I live for this shit:

"The Tig was polished and optimistic. Whether it was Meghan walking a rugged coastline in a perfectly belted camel coat or a “Tig Talk” with famous pals like the actress Priyanka Chopra or a recipe for “spicy broccoli and hempseed stew”, the website was curated eye candy that she hoped would be “the breeding ground for ideas and excitement – for an inspired lifestyle.”

Frau porn:

"Harry and Meghan “chatted a lot” that evening which ended chastely with Harry returning to the palace. Still, their chemistry had been electric throughout the meal as they both flirted. A touch of an arm here, direct eye contact there. “Harry knew they would be together at that point,” a friend shared. “She was ticking every box fast.”

While camping, she cleaned her face with baby wipes and happily wandered into the woodlands if she needed a bathroom break. Spending five days of uninterrupted time together gave the new couple a chance to get to know each other and discover that they shared a curiosity about the world and a laid-back nature. “It’s this love of adventure and sharing these exciting experiences that brought them so close together in the first place,” said a close friend of the couple. “The fact that they’re both as happy as just throwing on a backpack and going out to explore . . . First of all, I would like thank all of those in the DL Book Club for their painstaking & thoughtful analysis & their willingness to read this tripe. I read a DM article with only choice quotes from the book & I felt like I could take no more, so your country thanks you for your service.

Aside from all the crap, I think it's interesting how the BRF appears to routinely communicate with one another through the press - almost as if they care more about the *appearance* of caring about this person or that one rather than actually doing it. In that sense, I kind of get Harry's frustration with artificial nature of their relationships, but considering how he's always carrying on about invasion of privacy, it seems like a particularly low blow to put William's home life situation on blast, insinuating Kate & William were less than loving, hands on parents. He's free to talk about his relationship with his brother, but his brother's relationship with his family is no one's business but his own.

Harry had seen that situation at William’s home (the Cambridges had a live-in housekeeper and a full-time, live-in nanny), and didn’t want the same for his own family

by Anonymousreply 214August 12, 2020 9:26 AM

Yes, yes. I am sure Meghan and Harry don't have any domestic help. They vacuum and swirl the toilet bowl like the rest of us. Child care? Who needs it? It's a pleasure to wipe up both ends multiple times a day! In fact, H&M don't even use the indoor plumbing. They have tons of baby wipes and put them to good use in the garden.

by Anonymousreply 215August 12, 2020 9:50 AM

R215, and don’t forget, they need lots of security staff.

by Anonymousreply 216August 12, 2020 10:02 AM

How anyone could take the FF soap opera bullshit at face value is astonishing.

It's abundantly clear that Meghan Markle virtually wrote the book to big herself up as some sort of Working Class Heroine Martyr to the System whilst gleefully taking all its perks, attention, enhanced lifestyle, and opportunities for rage.

The potshots at William and his family are revolting. They're not only vicious and mostly either vastly exaggerated or outright lies, they demean Harry and Meghan far more than they do the Cambridges, who yet again, come out of this looking like the Sussex's victims. And never once is the issue addressed of the blindingly hierarchical nature of hereditary monarchies seemingly having escaped Meghan's notice.

You know Meghan wrote virtually wrote this because it carries all of her mental hallmarks: the Other is always to blame, rejection of all responsibility for any situation that went south, the Perfection of Meghan Herself, and not just the willingness but the desire to make sure all Harry's family bridges are burnt so that he also Can't Go Home Again. This was their pact, built on rage: she springboards him out of his boring sinecure, feeds his own unresolved anger and resentment so that it burns brighter, he gets his angry rocks off . . . and then they live with that for the rest of their lives.

The book really puts on view, as no one even on Pluto believes the two feckless ingrates didn't have a major hand in the project, is that the basic psychic place from which both of them operate is one of insecurity, entitlement, anger, and fantasy.

They come off in this book as unbelievably petty, thin-skinned, petulant, narcissistic, and saturated with self-pity, especially now with countries sinking into recession, tens of millions of people jobless who don't have Charles to fund their luxurious lifestyle, lost lives, lost life savings, homes in foreclosure . . . while she spends millions on petty lawsuits and moves into her next multimillion dollar home in another exclusive neighbourhood and destroys what's left of Harry's familial bonds.

It isn't the Queen who'd send that black Mercedes today for Meghan: it's Diana.

by Anonymousreply 219August 12, 2020 10:22 AM

My opinion of the bits I’ve read is that this book is everything I expected; flowery, flattering to Harry and Meghan, petty jabs at their “enemies”.

by Anonymousreply 220August 12, 2020 10:24 AM

The book and its "revelations" has interesting contradictions and outcomes that the Harkles didn't quite intend.

The two most obvious are the "own goals" of making the Harkles look like immature entitled twats and the Cambridges look classy and victimised and far better suited to royal status than the Harkles.

But despite the book's very obvious desire to treat the Queen and Charles with kid gloves, both for practical purposes (money and keeping those titles they so despise as they seek out "ordinary" lives well cushioned by what those titles gave them access to), they manage to make the Queen look like a patsy who fell for their game. One doesn't expect to hear her come out and post a video condemning the smears in the book against what are, after all, also dear members of her family.

But she knew the book was in progress at the time the exit terms were written. She is now in the position of dealing out further prairie justice, acknowledging that that door is closed, and making sure the key is turned in the lock - or being seen to reward bad behaviour.

As for Charles - Meghan's presumption at revealing (speaking of privacy issues) what she unilaterally claims as such a close bond that she considered him a second father - the irony wouldn't be lost on Charles after he saw what she did to her first father, and she knew quite well when she fed that to Scobit that Charles is too much of a gentleman to contradict her.

And William is also Charles' son, Charles' heir, Kate his much liked daughter in law, and the Cambridge children his grandchildren - thanks to Meghan, the only grandchildren he has a real relationship with.

So Charles has also been made to look ridiculous in the book, a pawn in Meghan's fawning game, unable to refute her absurd claims and helpless to counteract the smears directed at the rest of his family, or to save his younger son from himself.

It wasn't Meghan's intention, her intention was to flatter, but Charles comes off looking as foolish as the Queen.

And, as the man said in "The Godfather" - "And a man in my position cannot afford to be made to look ridiculous!"

The book is brilliantly entertaining for all the wrong reasons for its creators. Thanks for the dissection, DL Book Club!

Remember, years ago there was a popular non-fiction book written by “Anonymous “ ? and someone put it through some kind of software program which analyzed the writing style, compared it with excerpts from known authors, and came up with the actual author. I would LOVE it if someone analyzed this book with The Tig because it’s the same over-written artifice according to the quotes here.

by Anonymousreply 223August 12, 2020 12:11 PM

You're thinking of Professor Donald Foster, who, based on forensic linguistics, correctly identified Joe Klein as the anonymous author of Primary Colors, a roman a clef about the Clintons.

Some of Foster's later linguistic analyses have been successfully challenged but I still believe his attribution of A Visit from Saint Nicholas (aka The Night Before Christmas) to Henry Livingston, Jr. , instead of to Clement Moore, is correct. The Livingston family challenged the attribution to the scoundrel Moore from the beginning but their complaints were never paid attention to until Foster revived the controversy. Interesting rabbit hole to go down into.

Why did Charles give them funding for a house in Santa Barbara when they still owe British taxpayers for renovations at Frogmore Cottage? The optics are terrible.

by Anonymousreply 227August 12, 2020 1:57 PM

These excerpts are so cringeworthy I almost feel sorry for the Sussexes. Almost. The effusive words lauding Meghan as the most perfect woman in the world, the detailed descriptions of Meghan’s feelings, it reads like a very bad (not bad as is so bad it’s good) fanfic written by no other than Meghan herself.

Such sycophantic, gushing words in describing a person, untinged with irony, can only be compared with the praises heaped upon Kim Jun-Un, Supreme Leader of NK in his own country.

Thus book is awfully written by a hack with obvious collaboration from Megs and Dimwit

by Anonymousreply 228August 12, 2020 4:08 PM

The optics really are terrible, r227. Charles needs to watch himself lest the British public decide to turn on him for indulging these two vicious parasites.

by Anonymousreply 229August 12, 2020 4:14 PM

I don’t feel sorry for them at all, R228 — the Sussexes are crying all the way to the bank (of Charles).

by Anonymousreply 230August 12, 2020 4:23 PM

I agree with you, R228 — the excerpts read like ad copy for Markle.

R214,
I think it's interesting how the BRF appears to routinely communicate with one another through the press - almost as if they care more about the *appearance* of caring about this person or that one rather than actually doing it.

With the exception of TQ I think - she is old school, so she still values the true luxury of human relationships. That’s why she prefers to communicate via equerries.

by Anonymousreply 237August 12, 2020 5:11 PM

Hi Book Club! OP here! I hope you've enjoyed the excerpts I've posted!

Scobie said he wrote this book to "humanize" the Sussexes. If that was his intention, he fucking FAILED. The book is so endlessly and repetitively over the top as to Meghan's virtues, only people who are already her fans would enjoy it. Nothing is ever her fault, ever. Not her divorce, not her breaks with friends. And even things like the rush announcement of Megxit are waved away like "they can be impatient and impulsive". Flaws or wrong choices get 3 words, virtues get 3 paragraphs. Yeah, that real humanizes them.

This is not a book for "swing voters", so to speak. We know that there was conflict and tension with the Cambridges, so discussion of that...surely. But there are more than a few cheap shots that serve no purpose: Will and Kate have NANNIES! Kate never had a real CAREER!

And if he cut down the endless food details and re-introducing of characters that we already met, it could easily be 50 pages shorter.

If you love Meghan, you'll love her more. If you hate Meghan, you'll hate her more. If you're indifferent, you'll probably go into diabetic shock. But Harry will make you coffee in the morning!

by Anonymousreply 238August 12, 2020 5:21 PM

I’ve figured it out. MM and Harry did not *speak* to the authors but Megs forwarded her Sweet Sixteen Diary with the heart-shaped lock to them so they could copy word-for-word her recounting of their steamy African sojourn.

by Anonymousreply 239August 12, 2020 5:22 PM

Will and Kate have only ever had one nanny. Harry and Megs went through several, including the one who was so unprofessional that she had to be let go during her second night shift with Archie. Yet H&M were the ones who hired her, after leaking to the press that they wanted the best nanny for Archie and specifically didn’t want a Norland nanny (like the Cambridges).

If there was a competition in pettiness, H&M would come second, just to make sure they had something to bitch about.

by Anonymousreply 240August 12, 2020 5:33 PM

Thanks to all for posting the excerpts.

"Meghan's voice is getting louder...."

Indeed, one might add...."more shrill" and "desperate" and "manic....."

by Anonymousreply 241August 12, 2020 5:34 PM

This would make a great fiction novel: about an American actress and yogi meeting a European prince. It could be up there with Twilight. As a biography of flesh and blood humans, it's a fucking joke.

by Anonymousreply 242August 12, 2020 5:36 PM

This Scobie guy is such an ass-licking, fawning sycophant.

by Anonymousreply 250August 12, 2020 6:17 PM

For a book that contains the intimate feelings and vivid descriptions of details of relationship, it’s definitely not met with horror and indignation by the Sussexes of this intrusion into privacy. Only a moron wouldn’t conclude that this is in fact a book written by Meghan. Harry is dumb to read an actual book let alone write one, even one so laughably awful that it should be enshrined into the bad writing hall of fame.

by Anonymousreply 251August 12, 2020 6:18 PM

R243 Scobie is doing what many white, virtue-signaling assholes are doing, pretending to be biracial or multiracial in order to appear both exotic and woke at the same time. Often times they do what dumbass Scobie does, which is to conflate being ethnic Caucasian as for example being Latino or Asian.

R250 The editor being high on a cocktail of drugs would be the only excuse.

The sad yet laughable part of it is that instead of hiding in shame for the embarrassingly bad writing, Scobie is promoting the shit out of his/ Meghan’s work. The writing style is so bad and the content so sycophantic that it deserves all the ridicule it is getting.

I mean seriously, the book contains fawning passages about Meghan, the most perfect exemplar of womankind to ever walk the earth, being serenaded by wild birds complete with flowery descriptions. This book is literary ipecac if there ever is one. Truly vomit-inducing.

by Anonymousreply 257August 12, 2020 7:28 PM

Santa Barbara does make more sense than Malibu. It's more secluded, and it's where the big influencers whom Meghan emulates live. Plus it has a good polo club for Harry.

Supposedly Harry does not want a huge new house like the one they've been staying in is, either--he would rather have one that is older and has character.

I had the interesting experience of working as assistant to one of the editors (yes, there are more than one) of the recent HQ release "Finding Freedom". I thought you guys - especially the Crown sympathizers - might like to know that while the British Royal Family does occasionally come across rather poorly in the book, there were also definitely bits that, while verified to be true by numerous sources, were in the end kept from the finished draft. This was done mostly at the behest of one of our senior editors, who in addition to being quite old is also conservative.

For instance, it was left out that one of the main reasons Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the U.K. is the noxious stench that fires from QEII's practically decomposing cunt. There is absolutely no way to remove it (the smell) from any room she's entered. This is one reason Miss Markle wanted to use air fresheners in St. George's Chapel at Windsor the day of her wedding. The Prince had warned Markle what it was like to live with this fetid, all-pervading stink but she had no idea it could be so bad. Ultimately, she felt it was best to raise her child away from the toxic reek, which court doctors still do not understand.

Anyway, ask me any questions if you like. My contract with the publisher's up.

R53 has it, mind-boggling and ridiculous:
Theirs was a love story that took hold in Africa – where now Meghan, on the last day of an incredible three-week stay, stretched her body into the perfect warrior pose. She quietly took in her surroundings from the grounds of their final home away from home on this trip, a modern villa in Livingstone, Zambia, just under ten miles upstream from Victoria Falls. The rising sun washed over her makeshift yoga garden, while an exotic flock of birds that looked as if they had just had their tails dipped in pots of colourful paints serenaded her.

Do Scooby and Babs Cartland have much in common? I am starting to think so.

by Anonymousreply 319August 13, 2020 4:22 AM

Good lord, that excerpt R312, the platitudes upon platitudes it’s so unctuous like Scobie expects readers to genuflect in appreciation of Goddess Meghan as we’re reading the book. The readers must be made to believe that Meghan is the personification of Aphrodite, Hera, Gaia, and Athena.

This shit reads like propaganda biography for a certain megalomaniac Supreme Leader in North Korea.

by Anonymousreply 320August 13, 2020 4:25 AM

All Scooby did was take Meg's diary and turn it into a 'biography', so if anyone has anything in common with the dread B.C., it's Sparkle.

Code lite from now on guys, that cunt Morayeel is on the prowl at the behest of Whoresides and Hatty. Sparkles and Scooby should be fine.

How charming....

by Anonymousreply 328August 13, 2020 5:35 AM

Charles just raised the rents on all the Duchy tenants.

I am a monarchist, but if Charles paid 14.5 of Duchy cash for Meghan's future single abode rather than on relieving his tenants during this massive crisis, then the BRF should go after the Queen.

by Anonymousreply 329August 13, 2020 5:43 AM

Well she got Ellen and Oprah as neighbors. So she must be A-list now.

by Anonymousreply 330August 13, 2020 5:46 AM

Living next to Oprah and Ellen will only underscore just how un-A-list she actually is, r330.

by Anonymousreply 331August 13, 2020 5:48 AM

The Fail article says neighbors tend to keep to themselves and ignore one another. I wonder if that way of doing things will suit ME, or whether she will seek to Bring About Change.

The GoodReads reviews are fun.

"Dire and I'm being kind. Advance copy donated by cousin who is journo on UK broadsheet. Quite apart from where you stand on the whole Harry & Meghan story, this book is hilarious. The writing style is so syrupy, the cover should have a diabetes warning on it. I'm no fan of the royal family but even I could pick out the factual errors in the book. If your idea of a hard hitting, factually based film is The Sound of Music then this is the book for you. If not, then spend the book price on a splurge at Krispy Kreme, the sick feeling you'll get will be the same but at least you'll have enjoyed it. I normally pass books on but this one is charity shop bound."
r327 Now it's being reported that they bought a 14.5m mansion with the help of Charles.

Dear, his grandmother is [italic]one of the richest women in the world. [/italic]This is how close, beloved family members of the richest people in the world live. I mean Jesus, do you have any comprehension of what their holdings are??

All that aside, QEII and Charles basically drove Harry's mother to her premature death. It's really fairly easy for them to write a check now considering they got what they wanted.

If they didn't roll out the blood money, Harry and Meghan have more than enough money to buy that place, anyway. I imagine, considering his trust fund(s), his credit is excellent.

by Anonymousreply 338August 13, 2020 6:51 AM

I wouldn't say blood money but Charles obviously feels very guilty. Is that guilt to be the fatal flaw which bring this 1000 year monarchy to its close?

by Anonymousreply 339August 13, 2020 6:58 AM

Look, whatever it takes is fine by me.

by Anonymousreply 340August 13, 2020 7:01 AM

“Dear”, R338 - like all extremely rich families they didn’t get that way by throwing away money on halfwit second sons who have hooked up with middle aged ex-“actresses”.

No, dear - the bulk of the estate along with the big titles go to the eldest son (Charles) and his eldest son (William).

This is what they will consider the price of getting rid of her in the inevitable divorce. She’ll get the house and enough money to put her kid through some decent schooling. Beyond that? If it’s up to King William she’ll be back to yachting, although she’s a bit long in the tooth for that now, let alone in the future.

Maybe infomercials?

by Anonymousreply 341August 13, 2020 7:50 AM

If- IF - Charles has actually spent 14.5 million dollars of Duchy money on the vicious parasite couple, I can see an end to the monarchy.

If, on the other hand, he has been sensible enough to have bought it as part of the Duchy, then perhaps he will be forgiven by the People.

Wonder what Camilla thinks about all this..

R343 "Duchy money" is his private income so quite how him spending his own money would lead to the end of the monarchy, I don't know.

The renovations to Frogmore Cottage were more likely to get the British people's backs up.

by Anonymousreply 344August 13, 2020 8:33 AM

Sorry if somebody already pointed this out (I read only the first 100 or so posts), but Scobie recalls the young man taped sobbing about Britney Spears and how everyone was snarking about her. The tape went viral; this was something like seven or eight years ago, maybe more.

I remember seeing it on a news show, and the news reader thought it was a woman. He was startled when somebody on the show corrected him.

by Anonymousreply 345August 13, 2020 8:47 AM

"Duchy money" is a matter of heated contention.

If Charles wants to splash it out on cheap plastic showgirls, then he ought to get ready to lose the Duchy.

At the least.

R273 - Finding Freedom also states that Oprah gave Doria a place to stay at some point so I think she is helping them out, or has done.

by Anonymousreply 347August 13, 2020 10:11 AM

Ahh. Makes sense, r347

by Anonymousreply 348August 13, 2020 10:31 AM

I don't plan to purchase the book, but why would Oprah be giving Doria a place to stay? The woman has her own home and has been photographed walking her dogs regularly. Where are her dogs if she is playing nanny to the baby?

I can see having grandma around for some quality time with the baby, but to have her responsible for all the child care? I wouldn't expect my mom to do that.

by Anonymousreply 349August 13, 2020 10:37 AM

^^I will have to go back and check the book, I forgot exactly when it was. The book stated that it was during the time of a media storm and Doria was being pursued by paps and needed to get some respite.

by Anonymousreply 350August 13, 2020 10:44 AM

R337, yeah, the mainstream reviews have been disappointing. The New York Times reviewer (who admitted to being a huge fan of Meghan's) could only muster up the courage to say it was a bit disappointing.

I imagine criticism of anything Meg-related is off-limits for now; it is fun to see how those who deify her for identity reasons deal with each new absurd thing H&M come up with.

by Anonymousreply 351August 13, 2020 10:56 AM

Sparkles did not make The Working Actress blog - that person actually had jobs and some self awareness. Meg was busy tigging and yachting.

by Anonymousreply 352August 13, 2020 12:02 PM

From Finding Freedom, re: Doria.
In LA, paparazzi camped outside her house and followed her as she drove to the homes of her hospice clients. They raced alongside her, snapping pictures with their large cameras, as she made her way up the walkways to her clients’ front doors. It was an alarming scene not just for her but also for the people already in a vulnerable state.

Doria found an unlikely ally in—of all people—Oprah Winfrey. The former talk show host, who had been introduced to Meghan by a friend, reached out to Doria to offer her support when she was first swept up in the media storm. It turned out that on occasion they went to the same church, the Agape International Spiritual Center in Los Angeles. “Oprah has been a friend and a help to someone who’s been in a pretty extraordinary situation,” a source close to Meghan said. “There are not many people who can understand the situations that Doria’s found herself in, so it’s great to be supported by someone who understands the pressure of being in the public eye.”

Doria was able to spend time with Oprah when she needed to get away from her house without worrying that she would use their friendship to get an interview. (A senior palace aide had an honest conversation with Oprah before the wedding, where she assured them that “that’s not what any of this is about.”) “Meghan will always be so grateful to Oprah for being someone her mother can turn to,” a source said. “Doria has plenty of friends, but there’s a comfort you can take in knowing that someone like Oprah is close by and supportive.”

Still, there was nothing Oprah could do to stop photographers from hassling Doria on her way to work. While Palace officials kept in regular contact with Meghan’s mother, they were also powerless.

by Anonymousreply 359August 13, 2020 1:13 PM

Okay, so today the Telegraph refuted the claim that Charles assisted in the purchase of the house. The house was purchased solely with Meghan and Harry's funds and they are carrying a mortgage.

Who knows what is true. No doubt, he is paying in a way as he still paying their other expenses, but it sounds like he did not chip in directly to the house. I bet the reports yesterday that he purchased the house were Harry & Meghan's attempt to show that they are still in the good graces of Charles with no concern with the terrible optics of such an arrangement.

Is Dimwit spending the last of what remains of his trust on paying this mortgage and the unfathomable upkeep?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 360August 13, 2020 1:23 PM

R360, well that’s the thing. I have no idea about what their mortgage situation is, but I DO know that a house like that is very expensive to run.

I may have misjudged how soft-hearted Charles is. His indulgence of that boy seems limitless.

by Anonymousreply 361August 13, 2020 1:28 PM

Oprah is just trying to lay low hoping memories of her association with Meghan will fade from the public's mind in due time. But Meghan will keep associating her name with Oprah's until more forceful action is taken. Who knows what happened behind the scenes, but there is nary a peep about Serena anymore in their press releases. Serena's people must have made all too clear that there would be consequences if Meghan continued to bring up Serena's name in her PR, particularly with that ridiculous lawsuit in play.

by Anonymousreply 362August 13, 2020 1:31 PM

Megan's fan continuously name-drop who MEG and H are supposed to have on their side not understanding that does look impressive, just tacky and low class. "Don't you know who I am? Don't you know who my friends are?" isn't the same thing as proving you're a decent human being, that you're making a real difference or that you're in the right.

I mean, Jeffrey Epstein and Harv Weinstein name-dropped, too. Constantly. And they were both flaming garbage piles.

by Anonymousreply 363August 13, 2020 1:37 PM

*does not look impressive

by Anonymousreply 364August 13, 2020 1:38 PM

Oprah and Serena are brought up multiple times every day in connection with the Harkles. They live down the rosd from O, with her help. She particularly is not "laying low."

by Anonymousreply 365August 13, 2020 1:47 PM

Oprah is not lying low with respect to the Sussexes.

Charles's courtiers, his paid PR people, put out the off-the-record leak that Charles helped financially with the house in an attempt to make him look like a caring father. The Telegraph laid waste to this BS off-the-record Clearance House leak.

by Anonymousreply 366August 13, 2020 1:53 PM

So, did the residency clock begin ticking when they moved to California in March or when the house was purchased about 6 weeks ago? I am guessing that Meghan is counting the days until residency is established and she can file. I assume she thinks she will get to keep the house or get half its value in cash.

by Anonymousreply 367August 13, 2020 1:53 PM

Beware SS interns prowling around.

by Anonymousreply 368August 13, 2020 1:58 PM

I do love the Telegraph's source saying "with their own funds", as Meghan has very little in the way of said funds, despite her alleged worth of $5 million.

It means, they paid whatever the down payment was with Harry's trust fund revenue and, sorry, no one believes that none of Charles' annual "stipend" for this year wasn't used, either.

It's also terribly ironic to hear the place described as where little Archie can live a normal life and play with children his own age . . .

As if, you know, there were no children his own age in London and Windsor, starting with the cousins that Meghan's bitchy rage and jealousy cut Archie off from - because, don't you know, the Cambridge kids in their terrible schools found no one their own age to relate to or play with.

Jesus, their PR sucks big time.

by Anonymousreply 369August 13, 2020 1:58 PM

Does anyone seriously believe that the Sussexes can afford that house and its upkeep on their own?

by Anonymousreply 370August 13, 2020 2:01 PM

Yeah, Archie and a "normal" life in one of the richest communities on the planet. He's sure going to be in touch with ordinary folk in Montecito, with all those fancy private schools, too!

Got to hand it to Meghan Markle, she's finally where she always wanted to be.

As for costs, let's see: if they have a mortgage, the monthly payments including massive taxes and insurance, major monthly maintenance of grounds and home, the 18,000 a year for Frogmore, their staff including PR and whatever the fuck that "foundation" is doing, and four simultaneous private lawsuits with the most expensive private barristers in the business . . .

And we are supposed to believe this is all being taken care of by the annual revenue from Harry's trust fund, subject to UK taxes, of about $400,000 p.a.?

Pull the other one.

by Anonymousreply 371August 13, 2020 2:03 PM

I don't know, but they better get jobs. The taxes are over 200,000 a year. And don't forget the polo ponies. The journey to wokeness is expensive.

by Anonymousreply 372August 13, 2020 2:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 373August 13, 2020 2:05 PM

This is costing Charles a fortune. He's rich, of course, but he's not A-List American rich, like Clooney or Oprah and that is the kind of lifestyle Meghan and Harry want.

by Anonymousreply 377August 13, 2020 2:29 PM

So over $3 million per year on security alone. Upkeep of large mansion for 3 people, still you have to keep the house in running shape not just the rooms that are used for living quarters. Polo club membership and upkeep of ponies. Private preschool tuition fees for Archie. Upkeep of gas guzzling SUVs, 4-hours round trip to LA and back eats up a lot of gas. I wouldn’t be surprised if Meghan sweet talks Harry into buying a LA condo as a second base like many wealthy Santa Barbara residents do. I know a successful oculoplastic surgeon who practices both in LA and SB, and he does just that.

How are they going to manage the expensive upkeep in SB without jobs? And you know sooner rather than later they will buy a condo in LA, the commute is just too much in the afternoons, lucky to get back to SB in under 3 hours.

The princess had "long wanted to see her cousin settle down and be happy", the book claims.

A CONDO? LMAO!!! She ain't never living in a condo. No matter how big or expensive it is.

They may leverage the SB place at some point to get a second grand home in LA. Or she can find ass kissing sycophants to "lend" them an LA home to continue entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 396August 13, 2020 6:14 PM

I have never seen these two trending on Twitter other than the whole Megxit thing. And of course the wedding. But that would have been the case no matter who married Harry. The squad is not that powerful. They tried to get Archie trending on his birthday but it failed.

What it seems like is that she wants to buy relevance. But "purchasing" a ridiculous mansion among A-Listers will not make her A-List. Constantly name dropping celebrities is obviously not impressing anyone. She claims to be the most beautiful, talented, everybody-wants me, perfect specimen...yet she had been stuck in the same supporting character role on a cable show for seven years. They were about to write her out. No Emmys, no Oscars, no name recognition whatsoever, no designers after her for their campaigns, etc. What exact validation is she seeking? What happened in her life that she turned into who she is today? And FFS, what on earth made her think it was a good idea to admit in a book that she used her own son as revenge for an imagined slight? Does the book contain anything portraying her as a loving mother?

R387, you don't seem to understand narcissists or borderline personality disordered people. This is exactly what they do. Scooby-Doo doesn't appear to understand that his moronic paraphrasing of ME's diary in the recent book and the timing of its release were all designed to divert attention from the $15m our heroic duo just dropped on the Montecito mansion. They know it is obscene, spending so lavishly in the middle of a pandemic, the worst UK recession ever soon to be followed by the 'flu season and no-deal Brexit. ME managed to keep the $15m secret for all of six weeks, which is not bad given that she is the Fail's gift that just keeps on giving. However, the whole book/property deal shouts of further attempts to manipulate the media. The litigation is also an attempt to manipulate the media; unfortunately for Whoresides, the MoS for one has vastly deeper pockets (not least via insurance) than ME will ever have directly or indirectly. R398 He is . He is a meany who couldn't handle Meghan's Suits superstardom and refused to give up his one ticket to the Oscars for her .

by Anonymousreply 413August 13, 2020 8:16 PM

R410 You don’t seem to understand how narcissists work. They don’t think it’s obscene; in fact, they think that no costs incurred while being their fabulous selves are too high and people surrounding them should shoulder them gladly.

by Anonymousreply 414August 13, 2020 8:16 PM

It stuns that they bought such a massively large estate, 18,000 sq feet, for a young couple with a toddler. While in the midst of a COVID panic, all while having no real jobs, no current real income to support it all. It will cost millions per year just to make the basic expenses, and that doesn't include other life expenses such as travel, clothing allowance, or tuition for the child.

It boggles because there were several other perfectly decent estates for sale in Montecito for half the size and price, in better neighborhoods there, and all with private gated drives and gate houses for the inevitable security. They couldn't make due with a 9k sq foot house in the $7 million range?

There will be a lot to answer for if it comes to pass that Dad (Charles) is funding all of this. And if he isn't, just wtf is helping to fund it.

by Anonymousreply 415August 13, 2020 8:18 PM

Obviously it costs a lot of money to be woke. That's why there is not much chance for most of us without the guidance and intercession of Whoresides.

by Anonymousreply 416August 13, 2020 8:23 PM

Will they be taking in boarders to help with the mortgage?

by Anonymousreply 417August 13, 2020 8:27 PM

I am beginning to think Charles did not help with the house. If so, why have them couch surf all this time? Why have Doria act as a nanny? No, these two dimwits with not much to their names probably got assistance from someone else and they're too self-centered to understand that there is always a price to pay for those types of arrangements.

by Anonymousreply 418August 13, 2020 8:28 PM

The mortgage is with City National Bank.

by Anonymousreply 419August 13, 2020 8:32 PM

The mortgage payments on $9.5m must be astronomical. Of course ME got a sweetheart deal, because she's a movie star. It's still lots to pay every month. She and Haze no doubt think of this as an investment: we cannot expect to make $billions if we are couch-surfing at Tyler's. We have to have our own place, where we can be seen and entertain, $$$, then the corporate lecture circuit will be ours for the taking, not to mention other goodies like lots of lucrative show business deals which everyone around there has.

by Anonymousreply 420August 13, 2020 8:38 PM

Which well come first, the divorce or the foreclosure?

by Anonymousreply 421August 13, 2020 8:46 PM

You just know Meghan is seething with rage over the beating that book is taking in the media.

I predict the Sussex Squad (Meghan) is about to throw Omid Scobie under the bus. That wouldn’t be so bad, except that he made himself a laughingstock by putting his name on that book. Any shred of credibility he had as a journalist has been destroyed. Watch out, Omid!

by Anonymousreply 422August 13, 2020 9:00 PM

Megs is already bigger than Diana ever was.......around the waist, around the hips, around the thighs, and around the ankles.

by Anonymousreply 423August 13, 2020 9:01 PM

R422 I mean, the SQUAD did get a shoutout in the book.

Nearly 40...new parents...caring about idiots on Twitter.

by Anonymousreply 424August 13, 2020 9:05 PM

R414 Whoresides is not a true narcissist: look how she tried to divert attention away from the Montecito purchase with the Scooby-Doo book. She is not a true narcissist, and that will be her downfall, trust me.

by Anonymousreply 425August 13, 2020 9:06 PM

R425 I don’t think Meghan has the self-awareness to attempt to divert attention from anything she does, no matter how bad or ill-timed it is. She’s all about attention. And, as she demonstrates in her, uh, Scobie’s book, she has a knack for convincing herself that her critics are just a bunch of jealous haters. Everything she does is 100% justified (in her own mind, that is).

by Anonymousreply 426August 13, 2020 9:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 428August 13, 2020 9:26 PM
At their crucial Sandringham meeting with the Queen, “Harry felt as though he and Meghan had long been sidelined by the institution and were not a fundamental part of its future.” That was reflected, he thought, in the pictures on the Queen’s desk in her Christmas message: the Cambridges and their children, Charles and Camilla, Philip and George VI, but nothing of the Sussexes or their baby son.

Well, what did he expect? Harry is only sixth in line to the throne; Archie, seventh. Of course they're not a fundamental part of the monarchy's future! The same will happen to Charlotte and Louis one day - they'll remain household names, like Harry is, but they'll become less relevant. Their children won't command as much public attention as George's will. It's the nature of the system. Surely Harry noticed that his great-auntie Margaret wasn't exactly a figurehead of the BRF anymore by the time she died?

It was I, R433

by Anonymousreply 435August 13, 2020 10:25 PM

I've been following the Harkle threads since the engagement interview and it's remarkable how accurate and prescient the DL commentary about has been.

I remember she was dragged a bit for being overly dramatic and dominating that interview. I thought it was slightly cringey but excused it thinking she was nervous. After all, I might have gone into verbal diarrhea mode under that kind of pressure knowing millions of eyes would be on me. I wanted to see her succeed.

But damn, didn't DL have her number from the beginning, including the departure timeframe? I recall seeing a two to three year range with the divorce around the fifth year. If anything, DL was TOO generous with her.

Finding Freedom provides countless examples of narcissistic ideation, cognition, projections, and emotional reactions that fit neatly into just about all of diagnostic requirements for a formal diagnosis of NPD. She'd probably also receive a dx of "mixed" personality disorder for the borderline and paranoid features. It'd be interesting to know if she's ever experienced classic BPD features like cutting/self harm, dissociative episodes, or impulsive risk taking.

by Anonymousreply 436August 13, 2020 10:26 PM

Can anyone find pictures of the interior of this nouveau-riche Russian-oligarch pile the Harkles have just bought, with or without Chaz' two shillings' worth?

by Anonymousreply 437August 13, 2020 10:27 PM

The thing is, they COULD have made a big place for themselves in the monarchy if they had accepted they were second string. It'll be 15-20 years before the Cambridge kids start taking the spotlight. They could've done a lot of good and gotten a lot of attention in that time.

But nooooooo

"I've been following the Harkle threads since the engagement interview and it's remarkable how accurate and prescient the DL commentary about has been. "

You want prescience? Okay, I predict that due to the bad reception of the book, and the inconsistencies about whether the Harkles were interviewed for it, they throw Scobie under the bus and he fights back with all his jungle-red claws out. Depending on what kind of NDA he signed, he either states or implies that Meghan wrote most of that mess herself, and he just tried to edit it into comprehensibility.

And Meg wanted to move to SB to be close to Oprah, who is said to be planning a return to TV interviews and thinks that Meg would be a big seller. I predict they'll have a huge falling out within two years, probably less than one year, because Meg falls out with every woman she's ever known. Oprah will of course win the following catfight.

by Anonymousreply 453August 13, 2020 11:04 PM

She's trashy attractive in the way any other ordinary Deal or No Deal girl is. A dime a dozen. This fact, and her piss poor acting are likely why she never made it in Hollywood.

Harry is just revolting and looks like he smells. She can have him.

by Anonymousreply 454August 13, 2020 11:07 PM

R436 - "It'd be interesting to know if she's ever experienced classic BPD features like cutting/self harm, dissociative episodes, or impulsive risk taking."

Can't speak to the cutting or dissociative episodes - I believe those fall along a more extreme curve of the disorder - but she has definitely exhibited impulsive risk-taking. So far, she's more or less gotten away with it - after all, she did end up where she always wanted to end up, living in a luxurious home in Montecito, famous and living near other famous people.

But she definitely made some serious own goals through impulsive behaviour, one of which, frankly, was the Scobie book. It did far more damage to her than favours for her.

But other smaller incidents - the Mean Girl stunt at Eugenie's wedding; leaking nasty stories about Kate and William; trampling on other royals' news cycles; the disgraceful Tiaragate hissy fit; and, exhibiting out of control temper and imperious attitude toward staff, from the chef of her wedding banquet, to Melissa Tabouti, to the Queen's (working-class) dresser, Angela Kelley.

Meghan, in my opinion, displays swings from a canny awareness of the need to court the powerful and uncontrollable rage when they don't respond.

Her ugly public treatment of the BRF, especially its next heir to the throne and his wife, will eventually pay dividends that she will not like. COVID alone should have taught her that it's unwise to burn so many bridges so quickly, because the best laid plans, as the poet said . . .

The Scobie book was a total own goal. Burning bridges rapidly so many times is the hallmark of that impulsive trait. What is often said of her, that she's a good short-term in-fighter, but a lousy long-term strategist, is also a hallmark of the type, as it was of Diana.

She's gotten off lightly so far - she remains for all intents and purposes, an HRH and Duchess of Sussex; she got the fame she craved; the luxury lifestyle in the world she wanted to be part of but couldn't attain on her own.

Remains to be seen if that's the extent of it.

But as has been said of her before, like Loki, I think "Contentment isn't in [my] nature."

The girls at school thought she was fake because they could believe someone to be so “perfect”. While her slutty sorority sisters were out partying, Meg was the wholesome coed babysitting on Saturday nights.

by Anonymousreply 460August 13, 2020 11:26 PM

R439 - I see what you mean but I meant risk taking and self harm in the more "classic" sense - cutting, weird body modifications, using/abusing drugs and alcohol, driving under the influence, having a lot of sex with questionable people.

What she does with the ghosting fits more into the initial idealization, eventual, inevitable perceptions of rejection, anger and rage for not having been treated "fairly." "I'll show you by cutting you loose first." A reaction to having been "wounded" Or she might just be a stone sociopath who just does that routinely and feels no emotion or empathy toward others. I don't think she's the latter. Her behavior towards Kate suggests the former. "You didn't give me a ride? How could you not? I'm such a wonderful person! I'll show you and the world, too!"

In fact I believe in environmental sciences and socially liberal policies that many people mock as woke. It is people like the Sussexes and Hollywood liberal elites that grate on me. The constant virtue signaling from a place perched atop of the 1%, having the gall to lecture one thing while doing the opposite. I respect community woke activists over dumb, rich idiots with inherited wealth. Even rich assholes who made their own money I have more respect for than morons like Harry.

by Anonymousreply 466August 13, 2020 11:36 PM

"Why is she so threatened by Kate? "

Because 1) she sees every other woman in the world as competition, and 2) this is the first time she's had to deal with a woman who is close to her age, social group, and level of attractiveness... but who officially outranks her.

It has to absolutely KILL her an American woman with strong competitive instincts that no matter how many times she proves she's prettier, more popular, a hotter fuck, marter, better educated, more accomplished, better in every way... KATE STILL OUTRANKS HER. No sorority cunt would ever be able to live with that in the long term, they'd all do what Meg did, leave the field and pretend it was all beneath her in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 467August 13, 2020 11:45 PM

About Meg's first solo engagement with HM:

“Meghan was extremely grateful for the Queen’s generosity. It was an honor to be taken under the Queen’s wing so soon after her marriage. Kate’s first engagement, despite knowing the Queen for years, was a full ten months after her wedding to Prince William.”
she has definitely exhibited impulsive risk-taking. So far, she's more or less gotten away with it - after all, she did end up where she always wanted to end up,

I guess I have to respectfully disagree, r455. A lot of what Meghan does is planned with aforethought, deliberation often in the long term. From leaking to Lainey, to not wearing a hat on official duty with the queen to the Scobie book. She's incapable of visualizing the fallout or understanding what the consequences may be even when advised the top experts in the field. The thoughts of grandeur in her head crowd out any cognition to the contrary. They're simply incompatible with the narcissist's blinding self regard, their grandiosity, fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty and perfection.

Which is why I don't think she's truly borderline. Borderlines don't have such self-perceptions or esteem

No doubt they were left up because tasteless Meghan thought they would be met with choruses of envy and adulation. When the tacky interiors were met with derision, down the pictures came.

Meghan, I know you are monitoring this site and having threads removed, please note that your Russian-oligarch interiors are not tasteful. In particular, a bathroom fireplace WITHOUT A GRATE is a catastrophe.

by Anonymousreply 492August 14, 2020 2:09 PM

There really should be a Tasteful Threads post on Sparkles' house. I'd love to hear what the other experts have to say.

by Anonymousreply 493August 14, 2020 2:28 PM

Not just no grate, but also the fireplace in the bathroom is off-centre, which is weird and unsightly.

by Anonymousreply 494August 14, 2020 2:52 PM
the fireplace in the bathroom is off-centre

There is a faint whiff of faux Scottish baronial about some of the rooms (including the Travalyst room): this for a guy whose family owns Balmoral and the Castle of Mey; bizarre.

Laughing all the way to the bank. But really, she's going to have to take out a second mortgage to redecorate. (Have you noticed that the Deal/No Deal pics of Meghan are gradually being taken down?)

This property is an eco-nightmare. Who are they to preach to the masses about climate change? Or, BLM or other social justice issues for that matter? You care about social justice but purposely move to a wealthy, white enclave? I hope the public begins pointing this out the next time some organization uses them for visibility.

What's sad is that they can't be arsed to live within their means

by Anonymousreply 500August 14, 2020 3:41 PM

r496, Charles will pay for a full refurbishment of the house, and for everything else except for the actual mortgage repayments - that *has* to be paid out of Harry's own money so that she can have the house in the divorce.

by Anonymousreply 501August 14, 2020 3:43 PM

"This property is an eco-nightmare. "

Ain't it the truth! They preach Green, but they live with AC of 47 rooms, SUVs for themselves and the servants and security detail, and electric mowers and smoking leaf blowers and pesticides to keep the garden looking green and helicopter rides to LA because they just don't have time to drive three hours each way every time they have a meeting, they're SO in demand.

Their wokeness is utterly fake, they don't give a rat's ass about anyone else or the planet they live on. They just don't have anything else to say to the public.

by Anonymousreply 502August 14, 2020 3:46 PM

This estate really is an eco nightmare - just the gardening alone will have a huge carbon footprint, to say nothing of electricity, heating and air con for a property of this size.

If Harry really cared about the environment, he would never have bought it, but it seems he is, as in all things, a complete hypocrite who lives by 'do as I say and not as I do.'

by Anonymousreply 503August 14, 2020 3:46 PM

The excerpts are like Enid Blyton meets Barbara Cartland, but with an American twist.

by Anonymousreply 504August 14, 2020 4:24 PM

If they’re planning to live there and give up the pretense of being eco-warriors, fine. But if they say word one about carbon anything, they are dead meat.

Likewise racial equality or income disparity.

by Anonymousreply 505August 14, 2020 4:24 PM

Yes. This purchase really should put an end to their cos-playing as both eco activists and equality activists. They had little credibility before, but now it's completely gone.

by Anonymousreply 506August 14, 2020 4:28 PM

The house is an obscene in its symbolism and representation of wealth. That is fine in and of itself if you’re rich fucks living your wasteful, luxurious lives. But not if you style yourselves as environmentalists-humanitarians. No, that makes you hypocrites who must be shamed whenever you preach to the masses. You deserve to be the poster child of opportunistic assholes.

by Anonymousreply 507August 14, 2020 4:44 PM

I could see them easily shelling out another 1-2M just to redecorate. No doubt M refers to her trusty Pottery Barn catalog for “frightfully chic!” ideas all while working her way up to Architectural Digest styling. These 2 are pathetically ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 511August 14, 2020 5:15 PM

That's a good point - does his immigration status mean that the house is in Meghan's name only? Perhaps that why the mortgage is listed in connection to her business manager's address.

by Anonymousreply 512August 14, 2020 5:23 PM

He's given her a $15m house?

by Anonymousreply 513August 14, 2020 5:25 PM

Closer to 16 million, r513, and I don't know if he has, but given how whipped he is, it's not impossible.

by Anonymousreply 514August 14, 2020 5:27 PM

They’re pushing 40 and have never purchased their own homes. One of the mistakes that all property owners face is the cost of upkeep. They’re so set on the purchasing price that they lose sight of the extras that come along with home ownership. Sometimes these mansions are sold because the owners are cash poor and can’t afford the taxes, cost of maintenance, and even utilities. This type of estate requires wealth upon wealth, not just adequate income stream to barely keep it running. The sort of people who live in these homes longterm are people who ate worth more than 30-40 million. That’s chump change for people who live in these homes.

Now they’ve got to furnish and decorate this monstrosity. That’s not going yo be cheap with that many rooms to consider. I’m sure Meghan has pretensions of hiring Oprah’s decorator as she has zero style of her own. I doubt Oprah’s team works cheap either. So that’s another big chunk of change from Harry’s trust fund. Or perhaps personal loan from daddy.

Aitch's money is in trust. The trustees are supposed to be the wise men. Is it too much to hope that the wise men were awake/sober/paying attention when this shit went down and that they considered the "extras" beforehand? The a/c bill alone must be phenomenal, not to mention the water bill for 16 bathrooms; still at least she won't have any excuse at all now to keep shitting in the woods. And what about the property taxes - the county doesn't give you a discount for being a famous actress, duchess?

The super-wealthy are sometimes cash poor due to most of their wealth tied up as assets. However even these people have at least 20% of their overall portfolio invested in assets (not real estate) that’s liquid almost as same as cash in case they need to access it. Who knows if Harry is heeding advice of his investment advisors. He’d be stupid to cash out to buy and maintain this monstrosity because longterm it’s going to cost him.

by Anonymousreply 525August 14, 2020 6:10 PM

Charles is incredibly rich because of the Duchy of Cornwall. He can afford the house and the upkeep.

Harry will one day inherit a good deal of Charles's money (he will be very well provided for in his father's will).

by Anonymousreply 526August 14, 2020 6:48 PM

The Duchy is incredibly rich, in part because Charles has done a decent job of managing and expanding it, but the Duchy and all its funds pass directly to William in totality when Charles becomes King. The Duchy was established specifically to provide the Prince of Wales with an income. Charles can use the money on Harry right now, but he can't force William to use it the same way.

It's unclear how much money Charles has outside of the Duchy money. Back at the time of the divorce he had something like 21 million and had to borrow from the Queen to pay Diana's divorce settlement. It's not at all clear that Charles will have a lot of cash to hand to Harry in his will.

by Anonymousreply 527August 14, 2020 6:56 PM

Just wait until William is in charge of the pursestrings. He's going to put the smack down HARD. H & M had better hope they can make millions of their own $$$ before that inevitably happens.

by Anonymousreply 532August 14, 2020 7:21 PM

R531, it’s not obvious that will happen. British aristocrats famously don’t break up their estates, that’s why younger sons were left to fend for themselves. Plus, a lot of the RF’s income comes from property owned by “the Crown,” not by family members.

Imagine how many gardeners it takes to keep all the topiary in the formal gardens just so, how many maids it takes to keep all those bathrooms scrubbed, what their air conditioning bill is going to be like in summer, not to mention the cost of redecorating 52 rooms from top to bottom.

There's a fucking pandemic on, billions are suddenly unemployed, the disease is raging through the US and is going to cause a social catastrophe, and these two fucking tone-deaf idiots have bought a white elephant monstrosity that they can't possible afford and which contradicts everything they ever said about environmentalism. Is it me or is it really hard to understand what she means in that article on her summit meeting?

Eg:

'There is so much toxicity out there in what is being referred to as, my husband and I talk about it often, this to the economy for attention,' she went on. 'That is what is monetizable right now.

Economy for attention? Kudos to her if monetizable is a real word, never heard of it before!

And of course she spoke with Gloria Steinem the day before.

by Anonymousreply 565August 15, 2020 1:14 PM

^"The attention economy" and "monetize" (short step to monetizable) are standard jargon. Both of their official forays are filled with copy-paste from business-school corporate speak. by Anonymousreply 577August 15, 2020 9:03 PM

Where are they now?

by Anonymousreply 578August 27, 2020 5:42 PM

I got this from the library and am about 1/3 of the way through. As a fan of this soap opera, I'm enjoying it, although all the critiques about it being superficial are totally true.

What strikes me, just my opinion mind you, is that there are two authorial voices at work in this book. When it's necessary to recount some royal history or otherwise provide some context, the tone is relatively straightforward and reportorial. But when it pivots back to Harry and Meghan's personal story, it shifts to a breezy, peppy - dare I say Tig-y - tone, full of namedropping, product placement, and often hokey soundbites. And the level of detail is just too obvious - "Meghan and Harry exchanged meaningful glances, knowing they'd been spotted" (I'm paraphrasing here, mild example).

Anyone else sense this? I dunno. Good luck to them, I guess....

by Anonymousreply 579September 12, 2020 6:16 PM

Yes, R579, judging from the many examples posted above when it first came out, the voice is pure Tig. She must have either edited it or provided her diary entries (written with publication in mind) to the authors.

by Anonymousreply 580September 13, 2020 6:23 AM

I enjoyed the part where Meghan is "virtually" quoted as describing "learning the humility of wisdom" by finding the way to feeling pity and support for Harry "not packing in the manner to which I had become accustomed."

"You would not ask someone with no arms to carry your handbag. One thinks about all that one is gaining from what I like to call "love" from a forever-ever partner, not what is lacking. That's called 'compromise.'"

by Anonymousreply 581September 23, 2020 12:08 AM

Well, the book was overdue at the library, so I finished it today. Here's what I learned:

Meghan is FANTASTIC, amazing at everything she is and does. Harry is a supporting player - always either frustrated, angry, or otherwise emotional. The Royal Family don't give them no respect, and leave the couple perpetually "bruised and vulnerable." The end.
