Officials: Social Media Misinformation Campaign Behind Chicago Riots

“Social media posts that followed a police-involved shooting in Chicago encouraged looting as "tempers flared, fueled by misinformation," Police Supt. David Brown said after an evening of unrest led to more than 100 arrests and left downtown businesses damaged for a second time this summer.”

“Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said despite social media reports that the person shot was a juvenile, the suspect wounded was actually a 20-year-old man.”

"This was not an unarmed juvenile as unfortunately is being propagated on social media," she said.

The Alt right is behind all these riots. They gin up the masses on Facebook with fake bs.

by Anonymousreply 1August 10, 2020 10:53 PM

This smells of a foreign op.

Much like Charlottesville. With the help of their state side deplorables.

by Anonymousreply 2August 10, 2020 10:54 PM

Or it’s stupid people jumping the gun. Remember Sandy Hook and the Boston Bomber? People misidentifying people. It’s a game of telephone.

by Anonymousreply 3August 10, 2020 11:03 PM

This will be the headline going forward:

“The violence began after misinformation spread about a shooting incident involving the police.”

It looks like the alt-right was behind the whole thing.

Who is surprised?

by Anonymousreply 5August 10, 2020 11:06 PM

Why does everyone here think it’s the alt-right? There are assholes on the left too. They have irrational hatred of law enforcement. It goes both ways. People have abandoned common sense. Cops shoot people. It’s a fact. Sometimes the suspect actually had it coming. Get over it.

by Anonymousreply 6August 10, 2020 11:09 PM

[quote]It goes both ways.

Actually, it doesn't.

by Anonymousreply 7August 10, 2020 11:11 PM

Every single one of these police shootings has involved a campaign of misinformation to the public. Breonna Taylor being one of the worst. There’s so much misinformation that’s been spread about that case it’s insane.

R6 Because they are devoid of critical thinking skills.

by Anonymousreply 9August 10, 2020 11:13 PM

They did it last time too.

Sounds like we have another umbrella man:

“Minneapolis police say 'Umbrella Man' was a white supremacist trying to incite George Floyd rioting”

What does misidentifying a shooting victim have to do with looting stores miles away?

by Anonymousreply 11August 10, 2020 11:16 PM

This on the same day that the Chicago Tribune did a hit piece on Kim Foxx and how convenient that all those UHauls showed up, as we know, U-Hauls are the favorite vehicle of the poor. And wasn't it interesting that here and Capital Fax Blog all the right wing racists showed up on cue with their law and order talking points. Not to mention the cunts on here with their "friends who live in the city" moving away....

Call me suspicious.

by Anonymousreply 12August 10, 2020 11:18 PM

Why do the social media companies get away with everything?

by Anonymousreply 13August 10, 2020 11:18 PM

How do poor people who don’t even have enough to eat go out and rent expensive Uhauls that require credit checks, money and driver’s license and proof of insurance.

They also were all able to coordinate this within minutes.

They whole thing stinks of a foreign operation exactly like what they pulled in the Ukraine.

by Anonymousreply 14August 10, 2020 11:20 PM

The Michael Brown flames were initially fanned by his friend yelling into a camera that the cops "had shot him down like an animal!" which was total b.s. Other shootings involved relatives getting on social media and making similar hysterical claims.

by Anonymousreply 15August 10, 2020 11:32 PM

The "umbrella man" guy from Minneapolis, name is mitch carlson. He's definitely a white supremacist.

He's being investigated now with a pending arrest.

by Anonymousreply 16August 11, 2020 12:08 AM

R7 people like you are the problem. You sound just as stupid as the idiots who believe everything they see on Fox News. Leftist extremists are no better than the far right.

by Anonymousreply 17August 11, 2020 2:07 AM

Figures.

by Anonymousreply 18August 11, 2020 3:13 PM

No one cares of media accuracy. For the finger-pointers, it's simply another event to shriek blame and feel self-righteous. For the thugs and thieves, it's simply another opportunity to spend a few hours feeling that their lives are somehow less wasted and futile. And everyone will rationalize and justify anarchy because no one wants to be responsible for a decades' old social blight.
