What Was It About Building a Boat in the 80s?

I noticed this in sitcoms of that era, most notably Roseanne and the first season of Married... with Children. Both Dan Conner and Al Bundy had dreams of finishing the boats they kept in the garage and basement. Was this some yuppie thing?

Surely they were repairing, not building boats? And in a basement?

And yuppies?

The Connors and Bundies were not yuppies.

I don't know, OP, but I think Mark Harmon's character on NCIS was also building a boat in the basement. I guess it's the working man's fantasy of leaving work behind and sailing away.
