The media definitely want a black woman.
As for the "base"? Which base do you mean? There are a few different bases.

I think it would be a bad move if he does. This VP search has commanded so much attention and speculation that, if his choice turns out to be another white person, it's just going to invite more hand-wringing over endemic racism. People will say the bar is higher for black female politicians than it is for white ones, and I'd have to agree with them.

Maybe Whitmer could do black face and it would all blow over.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 10, 2020 4:59 AM |
Everybody assumes he's considering Whitmer for VP now because she went to Delaware to see him. Word is that he is also interviewing prospects for his Cabinet. He wants to announce a few of his choices before the election so people will be assured of competency once he takes office.
So just relax folks. It's all good.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 10, 2020 4:59 AM |
I’m black and I’m good with whomever Joe chooses. The black women in my family are also good with joe’s choice. There are sections of black media who are demanding Joe pick a black woman but they don’t speak for the majority of black people.

Whitmer in a Cabinet position is fine. Whitmer in the VP slot would be a betrayal and an unforced error. Why is the Biden team even floating this? It's destructive.

R6, We'll see what happens.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 10, 2020 5:08 AM |
If we're not going to get Elizabeth Warren, then Whitmer is a good alternate.
As long as it's not Harris or Rice, then it's fine.
Just because the media and the overly vocal minority of the Democratic Party are demanding that the VP choice MUST be black, doesn't mean that Biden has to do it.
He doesn't owe them a goddamned thing, LEAST OF ALL THE MEDIA, who helped elect Donald Trump in 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 10, 2020 5:11 AM |
They are not floating it R10. It's just the media and everyone else speculating.

When does Biden announce the VP?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 10, 2020 5:22 AM |
By the convention R19 - it has little to do with choosing a running mate and everything to do with build-up and polling. So far so good.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 10, 2020 5:29 AM |
It doesn't matter who it is for VP.
There are no swing voters out there any longer. . No one is anxiously awaiting the VP announcement.
There are Trump voters. Then the rest of us.

by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 10, 2020 6:57 AM |
Whitmer would be an awesome thumb in the eye of (or thumb of the nose to) Trumpers.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 10, 2020 2:26 PM |
Why would Trumpers find Whitmer any more irritating than any other VP pick?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 10, 2020 2:37 PM |
R27, it's not about whether they're irritating to the cult: any woman selected is going to be irritating.
It's about what kind of fodder the person provides the cult, to exaggerate and fabricate lies around. Has Whitmer dabbled in Cuban socialism? Has she prosecuted innocent Black men? Did she misstate something to Congress during a hearing on a foreign incident? Did she excuse cop violence? Is she for "huge structural change" to the economy? Is she not religious? Is she in any part an ethnic minority?
Anything they can get a hold of to make into a source of revulsion and fear, they will.
All I see so far: she was a county prosecutor briefly, and her parents are wealthy (father was a health insurance CEO), and her virus restrictions were a little draconian to some (not to me)

[quote]Just because the media and the overly vocal minority of the Democratic Party are demanding that the VP choice MUST be black, doesn't mean that Biden has to do it.
That "vocal minority" single handedly saved him from having to drop out, so sorry, he does owe them.
Again, if you don't like this, why don't place the blame on Biden who opened his mouth up and started all of this? I love how the Biden fangurls want this to be everyone else's fault when he put this out there in the first place.
[quote]The only people objecting to Whitmer are Trump supporters.

Whitmer has no baggage, really. I think she'd be the best we've chance we have to win this thing. Blacks won't ever be content with any VP choice. Biden served under the only black president we've had. If that doesn't pass the smell test with them ppl then I don't know what will.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 10, 2020 2:57 PM |
Could be that this isn't even Biden's choice. There are so many factions in the Democratic party that are cashing in their chips right now, cause they smell blood in the water, that they want their candidate of choice to be his running mate.
I think Biden screwed himself when he committed to choosing a woman as VP. Why not just say "I will choose the best possible person to be my running mate". He wouldn't have boxed himself in like he did, and he could have chosen Mayor Pete - got to look beyond 2020 at this point as I think, if things work out, the Dems could control the WH for 12 years at least if they play their cards right.
But even now, even knowing the game the Repugs are playing, the Dems can't get their shit together and are already bitching and rumours are flying about not supporting Joe if he chooses the "wrong" candidate, in their opinion.
The eyes should be on the prize - defeating Frump and his corrupt GOP. End of story.
So no matter who Joe chooses, vote blue up and down the ballot and wash away the stink that has made its way into the WH and government. Support the Biden/Harris-Rice-Warren-Whitmer-Demings-Duckworth-Baldwin ticket no matter what.

Fuck this! DO NOT BE DISTRACTED. Focus on the state elections. Focus on making sure we have ballot security. Fight voter suppression. Raise hell about Election Security, and camp out at the Secretaries of state offices to demand the elections are fair. Demand that we have observers when they count votes. Do not let them bar access to legitimate Poll Watchers. Election Security is the main issue. And work hard on turnout. Everything else is bullshit.

Look. IMO this is a feint. Biden and Jennifer Granholm, the former governor of Michigan, are very close friends. Look for Granholm to get an ambassadorship or some other job from Biden. Wouldn't surprise me at all. Granholm is Canadian by birth. Whitmer is also a close friend of Granholm's. So it is not out of the ordinary for Graholm to hook up Whitmer for facetime and more. It will benefit Michigan greatly to have Biden's attention. He needs those votes . Michigan will go Blue for sure. So, either Whitmer will stay governor, and benefit from the generosity of a grateful President, or she will get a cabinet position. But IMO she is not being chosen for the VP spot.

Whatever is going on --- and something is going on at this point, something must have throw everything back up in the air --- I am confident part of the delay is collecting data on Plan B.
They are not just going to go with their gut. So if there are risks - like a black base revolt - they will know it and will have made a calculation that the pick correspondingly makes up for the loss in other quarters.
I bet this went wrong two weeks ago and they're having trouble with the field data or it's taking longer to figure out the way forward based on the field data.

[quote]Whitmer in a Cabinet position is fine. Whitmer in the VP slot would be a betrayal and an unforced error. Why is the Biden team even floating this? It's destructive.
My fear is that he'll pick someone who was never in contention (or rather we were lead to believe was) at all and THAT will cause a bit of outrage for a while.
If it's a black person the right will instantly go on attack but otherwise people would be fine.
If he chose Warren people would be upset but at least the rational is she's been out there working with him and stuck in the contest longer than anyone else. So that wouldn't last long. She already has an audience that likes her. The Bernie Bros would scream but they would anyway.
If it was another white person that wasn't Warren many more people would be furious.
However, everyone would get over it in a month no matter who he chooses unless they have a shitty record.

There is a problem as I see it. I don't think Jill Biden is a fan of Kamala. I think Chris Dodd, and that old guard, who have been close friends of Joe's for 40 years, were speaking for her, as much as for themselves when they said they were still upset at her for going after Joe. Jill Biden will influence his choice. Now, she would feel comfortable with Bass. But no one knows Bass and the average person is not going to engage. The fact is Susan Rice meets everyone's comfort level. Jill knows Susan. She's familiar with her. So factor that in.

Joy doesn't know how long it takes to prepare the VP candidate for this new role. You have to update the logo and get the merch in place. There is a ton stuff that has to happen after the decision is made and Joy knows that. It will be interesting to see if her enthusiasm extends to another black candidate if it isn't Kamala.

But amid the national outcry over racism and police violence after the killing of George Floyd, Mr. Biden faced increasingly urgent calls this summer to select a Black woman.
For months, he and his campaign have heard from strategists and activists who have made the case for an African-American vice-presidential choice. Polling has shown that many voters give Mr. Biden broad political leeway to make his selection. But a number of party strategists have argued that selecting a Black running mate would energize voters, and reflect the central role Black women have played in the Democratic Party and in reviving Mr. Biden’s once-flailing candidacy during the primary.
“Black women have become excited about the possibility, and have a serious sense that the vice president’s success thus far would not have been possible without their investment, their confidence in him,” said Leah D. Daughtry, a veteran party strategist who has spoken with Mr. Biden and his team about selecting a Black vice-presidential candidate. “The majority of the finalists are African-American. The campaign would have a lot of work to do to explain to people why none of these women were picked. That’s going to be a tall order. A big book of business.”

No he didn't. This is all because people are too fucking impatient and the 24 hour news cycle just pushes this shit and keeps people stirred up. There are lot of people on cable news paid millions of dollars to speculate. Maybe the solution is to turn off cable news for a few days.
I also want to add that those of you who keep going on about identity politics, aren't doing yourselves any favors. There is not a single black candidate for the VP slot that isn't qualified for it.

In case you haven't noticed, existence and death are a cosmic hoax; an existential, sick joke.
How else to explain that those 30 people are dead and Trump, a gelatinous, ignorant, stupid, dangerous, bigoted, asshole is alive and sits in the Oval Office as the US President?
Every day I tune into his press conferences hoping for, and not wanting to miss if it happens, Trump, on live TV, topple over dead from a massive myocardial infarction(that means heart attack) or massive stroke.
So yes, I find the absurdity "hysterical" and don't give a rat's ass how you feel about that, you pearl-clutching Trump ass-kissing fool.

There's something that feels part temper tantrum about this power play and part clear eyed or cynical opportunism. It's ugly. I support a black nominee for a lot of reasons and I support blacks in cabinet and as Supreme Court pick. But something about this power play strikes me as operators at work and I that part of the political system does as much harm as good, on a good day.
I hope it's a black woman. Any of them are up to the job.
But the threat of losing the election if he doesn't choose one has the effect of tainting the very thing they want. That's a shame for the nominee.

It was said on one of the Sunday public affairs shows this week (I don't recall who said it) that Biden did a disservice to the eventual nominee by announcing he wanted a woman. They said the person will be tainted with a tag of tokenism as a result.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | August 11, 2020 2:54 AM |
I think the woman choice was aspirational. It's fine to make the elevation of a woman a priority. Getting tangled up in the black woman thing has created a complication. They are all talented women, if is some are superior choices to others, and all could do the job to one degree or another. I argue that stupid letter did more harm than good. It creates a platform for doubt and racism: Biden caved to win. It was a stupid move. I'm surprised they don't have t-shirts ready to sell.

White women in America are like 35% of the country. Sometimes I think their were a lot of white women that wanted a white woman president. Hillary was polarizing. horrendous for some, fabulous for others. But there's still gas in the tank to fire them up. Gov. Whitmer may a redeeming vote.

Van Jones eats dinner with the Kushners at their house in D.C! He's a fucking double agent. The fact is the Republicans are putting on this show to push Joe in public. That way if he does choose a Black woman, it looks like he caved in to pressure. Not a good look. If he doesn't they will agitate to roil up the base of the Democratic Party and try to divide with negativity. Van Jones is an asshole. Like he is in a position to threaten and coerce and publicly insist? WTF does he thin he is? YOu know Obama fired him? He had some project he was working on with Environmentalists and it dealt with Environmental racism and he was shady and duplicitous, and Biden knew it. Because some of the stuff he was doing was part of Biden's portfolio. So fuck a Van Jones. He has an agenda and it is not to help get Biden elected.

There was still buzz around SUSAN RICE, too, with whom Biden has a long working relationship and who has vast experience in the White House -- including having a hand in handling a pandemic.

by Anonymous | reply 169 | August 11, 2020 1:46 PM |
This isn't even about all black women being considered. The Kamala camp are the ones pushing this narrative the hardest because they want Kamala in. When Bass was being considered a couple of weeks back, Kamala stans went after her on Twitter. This isn't about choosing a black woman, this is about choosing Kamala Harris.
Furthermore, this is being pushed by celebrities. You go on urban blogs and no one for the most part gives a shit. They'll vote for Biden regardless for whoever the nominee is. They have bigger issues to worry about. In fact, many are starting to feel insulted at what they feel like is just giving someone a position because of their skin color.

The whole point of Biden being the candidate is that he was supposed to deliver the Black vote. Most whites people didn’t want him. It sounds like Blacks are suddenly all not-too-impressed with Biden, even though they’re the ones who made him the nominee.
