What are Broadway actors doing now?

Each other .

by Anonymousreply 2August 8, 2020 3:29 AM

Don’t bother asking the tired queens of the theater gossip thread. Most of them seem to have no actual connection to theater and instead just compulsively obsess over decades-old shows.

by Anonymousreply 3August 8, 2020 3:30 AM

Zing! That joke sure is fresh, R2.

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2020 3:31 AM

Hopefully some of the hot ones will start to do OnlyFans, Chaturbate, or porn.

by Anonymousreply 5August 8, 2020 3:31 AM

R5, god, you’re funny. I hope you also find yourself out of work one day so that you, too, can enjoy the privilege of having strangers make repetitive cracks about how you should try earning your food and rent money by giving them material to masturbate their unsightly old cocks to.

One I know left NY and is looking for teaching work.

It’s a hard time.

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2020 4:05 AM

I have a teaching job that starts next week. Not sure if that is : ) or : ( ...

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2020 4:11 AM

r6 I'll never have to. I didn't follow a risky career path and now I'm retired with a six-figure pension.

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2020 4:31 AM

Reading DL.

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2020 4:49 AM

many are teaching online classes

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2020 4:54 AM

R10, well I was right about you being old. Good luck getting laid at your age, asshole! Maybe I should take pity on you because an unemployed actor’s OnlyFans is probably the only action you can hope to get at this point. At least death will be coming for you soon.

And I bet your career was as boring as you ❤️

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2020 11:40 AM

Like standup comedians, some are doing zoom shows.

by Anonymousreply 14August 8, 2020 12:08 PM

All of us who have stuck with it and cobbled a life and career are completely devastated. And those who think we are being crybabies and should just get a "real" job are callous and unfeeling. WTF are we supposed to do now? We'll adjust because we have to but our lives have been shattered. Who's gonna hire me at my age? I wouldn't. I'm not getting replies for $15/hour jobs.

by Anonymousreply 15August 8, 2020 12:26 PM

[quote] Like standup comedians, some are doing zoom shows.

But a comedian has an act he can do, what do Broadway actors do on zoom by themselves, recite monologues?

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2020 12:35 PM

I gave up acting a decade - was good enough to get a card but not steady work. I now have a house, two dogs, a high salary, and an ache for performing that will never leave. Please hang in there, r15, whatever the future holds for you.

by Anonymousreply 17August 8, 2020 12:45 PM

They are hoping that they won't have to put their careers on hold until they are old enough to be in " Follies."

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2020 12:56 PM

Anyone being nasty on this thread is a POS. It is completely devastating what has happened to the theater community with COVID.

R15 - I feel for you. I loved going to broadway shows. Sending you all the good energy I have.

by Anonymousreply 19August 8, 2020 3:33 PM

Who is doing Aaron Tveit?

by Anonymousreply 20August 8, 2020 4:24 PM

R20, he’s straddling me now.

by Anonymousreply 21August 8, 2020 4:25 PM

Both Aaron Tveit and Jeremy Jordan are currently filming separate Christmas movies for the Hallmark Channel.

by Anonymousreply 22August 8, 2020 4:29 PM

Unemployed actors could always count on waiter/waitress gigs to tide them over. With restaurants dropping like flies, what the hell are these people doing for jobs?

by Anonymousreply 23August 8, 2020 4:29 PM

R16, I should have been more specific.

I saw a news story on the musical theatre ones who are doing zoom shows. They either accompany themselves on piano or have a friend play an instrument. Kind of like when you see a one-woman show on stage--stories and anecdotes between the singing.

You would think they would come up with some work around for this. I have a lot of friends both on and behind stage and they are just devastated.

by Anonymousreply 27October 30, 2020 1:23 AM

One friend moved to California to live with his sister as he was running through his savings and could no longer afford to live in NYC. He’s still looking for work. Other friend moved back home to Texas to live with her parents for the same reasons as my other friend. She found a job working in an office for a friend of her dad. Both of them have done multiple Broadway musicals. Both were in different long running shows so they feel certain their respective shows will come back and they will head back as soon as it happens.

by Anonymousreply 28October 30, 2020 1:54 AM

Will they be able to go back to their shows automatically R28 or do the shows pull a new cast together?

by Anonymousreply 29October 30, 2020 2:16 AM

They are getting older by the minute, hoping to become ancient enough to be in Follies.

by Anonymousreply 30October 30, 2020 2:19 AM

Well, at least David Pevsner will never starve.

by Anonymousreply 31October 30, 2020 2:25 AM

R29 I asked one of them and she said she thought she would be asked back BUT she said she wasn’t 100% sure since all of this is new. I’m sure it will have to be figured out between the Producers and Actors Equity to figure out how things will be done.

Who exactly is "they", and what "workaround" can anyone possibly think of. Tens of millions of Americans are out of work, what are you thinking someone is supposed to be doing for Broadway performers? What about the usually-employed who weren't currently in a show when it all shut down?

hey, broadway folks - what's keeping you busy?

by Anonymousreply 39December 21, 2020 1:49 AM

There's an underlying tragedy here. Actors are used to getting temporary work, between acting gigs. But this year — no temp jobs, actually zero. I'll bet there are plenty of formerly working actors who are literally going hungry.

by Anonymousreply 40December 21, 2020 1:55 AM

are they staying in new york? or just moving back home, r40?

by Anonymousreply 41December 21, 2020 1:57 AM

[quote]What are Broadway actors doing now?

Many of them are crying.

by Anonymousreply 42December 21, 2020 2:03 AM

I miss live music and broadway shows. I really hope the performing arts community can recover.

by Anonymousreply 43December 21, 2020 2:55 AM

The youngest actors, the ones who'd just arrived in NYC or were about to finish drama school, feel totally hopeless. Most left the city and my guess is only a third of them will return.

The working stage actors who aren't stars are screwed. They are unlikely to get film or TV work, and the interim jobs most had between gigs are almost completely gone.

Even some theatre stars are struggling, as some of them don't get much work outside of theatre. Broadway isn't really going to be back until Fall 2021, and even that feels spotty and questionable. I know many actors and dancers who are teaching online classes, doing anything to make a buck.

And when Broadway returns, the money isn't going to come in the way it did before, so my guess is there will be cuts all around until things get in full swing again. And that's not projected to happen until 2025! In the meanwhile, the shows that almost totally depended on tourists will really struggle. How many New Yorkers are going to head to midtown in a mask to see Phantom or Wicked?

The United States Congress has agreed to a new bipartisan coronavirus relief package that allocates $15 billion in funding to independent movie theaters and concerts venues.

According to USA Today’s Nicholas Wu, the relief package incorporates the Save Our Stages Act. First introduced by Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota over the summer, the act calls for six months of financial support to “keep venues afloat, pay employees, and preserve a critical economic sector for communities across America.” Under the original proposal, venues would be provided grants accounting for either 45% of a business’ operation costs from the previous year or $12 million in total — whichever is the lesser amount. Venues would then be allowed to use that money to pay off “costs incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic” as well as rent, utilities, mortgages, personal protective equipment, maintenance, administrative costs, taxes, and expenses to meet local and federal social distancing guidelines.

The National Independent Venue Association, which was formed earlier this year in response to the pandemic and represents roughly 2,800 venues from all over the US, had been lobbying Congress to pass the Save Our Stages Act without delay. According to a study commissioned over the summer, 90% of NIVA’s members said they would eventually be forced to cease operations permanently without federal support. In the interim, NIVA sought to raise money for independent venues through corporate donations and other initiatives, including the digital #SOSFest.

Dayna Frank, owner and CEO of Minneapolis concert venue First Avenue and NIVA board president, said in a statement: “We’re thrilled that Congress has heard the call of shuttered independent venues across the country and provided us a crucial lifeline by including the Save Our Stages Act in the COVID-19 Relief Bill. We’re also incredibly grateful that this bill provides Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which will help the millions of people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own during this economic crisis. We urge swift passage of this legislation, which will assist those in the greatest need and ensure the music lives on for generations to come.”

The COVID relief package also provides $600 stimulus check to every US adult and $600 for each of their dependents; enhanced unemployment benefits; and paycheck protection program eligibility for local newspapers, television, and radio broadcasters.

The exact language of the legislation has not yet been released, so exact specifics regarding the aforementioned benefits are unclear. We’ll update this article as more information becomes available.

Most tv casting directors in NYC are shoveling all the smaller tv roles at Broadway actors. I usually get seen for the same roles but lack a very busy Broadway/legit resume. I tend to have a lot of auditions, but since tv production started up again I've had very few. I don't merit anyone's loyalty or saving, I guess. Boo!

by Anonymousreply 49January 1, 2021 8:42 AM

What have you been in, r49?

by Anonymousreply 50January 3, 2021 5:45 PM

Cocaine, if Cheyenne Jackson is any indication.

by Anonymousreply 51January 3, 2021 5:53 PM

It's devastating what has happened to the arts. I hope things can recover, but it's going to be a long time, and these effects, sadly, will be long-lasting.

I'm sure many parents will use this as an example to encourage their children who want to pursue a career in the arts to another occupation.

by Anonymousreply 52January 3, 2021 5:58 PM

r52 if their children go to traditional schools I hope they encourage them to at least double major. I can't image what it must have been like to have the rug pulled out from under you. I have to give the actors and stage hands props on their hustle.

I wonder if it's been even more of a buyer's market for the rich NYC sugar daddies?

by Anonymousreply 53January 3, 2021 10:11 PM

The sugar daddies are stepping up and having three and four chorus boys apiece

by Anonymousreply 54January 3, 2021 10:29 PM

My brother is AEA/SAG/AFTRA and has been in NYC for 30 years. He's had some TV and independent video/film gigs in the past 10 months, but nothing more than a 3-day stint at a time. His biggest concern is his AEA health insurance; it requires 12 weeks of paid Equity gigs in a calendar year to cover you for the next year. No one qualified for that in 2020, so nearly the entire professional theatre industry will be without health insurance in 2021 until they book Equity gigs later this year.

by Anonymousreply 55January 3, 2021 10:52 PM

Is “Broadway actor” even a real job? Maybe they should have taken their parent’s likely advice and sought training or education in a useful field.

by Anonymousreply 56January 3, 2021 10:59 PM

They’re probably also wondering when they ate corn.

by Anonymousreply 58January 3, 2021 11:10 PM

[quote]What have you been in, [R49]?

The usual mix of commercials and voice overs (my main gig), a mix of shorts and indie features, co-star roles (small speaking roles) in four popular tv series shot in NYC, a lead in a played-to-death Hallmark movie and a nice role in an upcoming, big-budget sports drama. The point is, I'm still a nobody and with no big Broadway credits, even more expendable than before.

by Anonymousreply 59January 4, 2021 12:06 AM

But you did a Hallmark movie r59! That's big these days. Not household name big but at least people see it. Also means that you're handsome. If single, have you considered selling your goods?

Jokes aside, I wish you the best. I'm really sorry for all of you and proud of you for sticking it out this long.

You are so sweet. I left out the fact that I played the leading lady's father, lol. She IS one of the popular leading ladies who is always in these and really lovely.

by Anonymousreply 62January 4, 2021 7:00 AM

Fuck you R56 !

by Anonymousreply 63January 4, 2021 12:49 PM

If you have the tome r62 can you tell us what it was like working on the movie? What are the housing accommodations like? Do you get a basic room at the HolidayInn at some random Canadian city? Did the actor playing your future son in law ping?

My generation likes the mature daddies, but sadly our pockets are usually too dry to pay. For what it's worth, I still think being in that movie is kickass.

by Anonymousreply 64January 4, 2021 4:23 PM

Ha! Thanks for your interest r64. I think I can shed a bit of light on your questions.

[quote]Do you get a basic room at the Holiday Inn at some random Canadian city?

Yes exactly that, except it was a Holiday Inn Express and almost brand new, so quite nice.

[quote]Did the actor playing your future son in law ping?

No, not at all. A charming married guy with small children, and an absolute pleasure to work with, as was our wonderful leading lady who was basically the cast's team leader. We also had a very capable production team, and a calm, seasoned director.

It isn't the type of gig where anyone makes a ton of dough, but a brisk and focused effort, without a single joy killer, or foot dragger in the bunch. Nobody was "slumming", or walking through it. Although efficiently filmed, I sensed no real "rushing", and if we needed one more take to make it better, we had time to shoot it. I enjoyed every moment.

P.S. The shoot was the first time I had ever cut down my own Christmas tree, which I found pretty funny. I had hoped a scene where we did that would be in the script, and it was!

by Anonymousreply 65January 4, 2021 11:42 PM

R5 I think that is true. I have seen lots of them

by Anonymousreply 66January 4, 2021 11:46 PM

[quote] Thanks Diane. I own the gym and am so fortunate to have Adrian on my team. Little known fact - Adrian (Aguilar) played Rocky Balboa in Rocky the Musical on Broadway. Google it. He has so much talent. He works as our head coach because helping people is his true passion.
