Chita Rivera just tweeted
My heart is broken at the loss of my great friend and amazing artist Brent Carver. I shall miss him more than I can say.

I read that today. His cause of death wasn’t given.
I really only remember him from the 90’s Canadian gay-themed drama LILLIES.

His Kiss of the Spider Woman co-star Anthony Crivello has tweeted
The loss of friend & brilliant fellow actor Brent Carver is just terrible, personally and for the theater community. He was wonderful to work with. What a magical time it was. So sad. May his soul be carried on angels wings to a heavenly rest. Peace my brother. xo

Fellow Canadian Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) just tweeted
Just gutted to hear this. Every show I did with Brent, every time I saw him perform, I learned something. Laughter or sadness, he’d leave you in tears one way or the other. A breathtaking talent and a beautiful soul. #RIP #BrentCarver

How did he die?

The family has declined to release that information

I saw him as "Hamlet" in Stratford, and he was amazing and heartbreaking. That same season I also saw him play Hamlet in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead," where he was equally amazing. (The cast from "Hamlet" played the same roles in "Rosencrantz," which was a fun concept) I also saw him in "Spider Woman" (awesome), as The Pirate King (wonderful) and the Emcee in "Cabaret," in which he was absolutely chilling--- the greatest Emcee I ever saw, even better than Alan Cumming. What a loss.

It was not a race to be the first to announce this one, OP. You should have taken the time to link to something letting us know who he was.

Brent Carver is one of the great stage actors of the world. Mostly Shakespeare, Star of Stratford the West End and Broadway. He was decidedly and proudly Canadian. Unknown to old fags like Tony Woodard - who imagine they know everything. America is dying.

Fuck you, R13. If this had been the death of Crick or Watson I would have said the same thing. It not like your small world, no matter how vaunted, is known to the rest of us.
And as for calling me an old fag for not recognizing the name of an ancient Tony winner, I commend your commitment the Method. I regret however to inform you that the revival of Boys In the Band has been fully cast but we appreciate your effort.

Watch your mouth Tony Woodward. I've never heard of Boy in The Band. But I knew Brent Carver. May Jesus visit healing upon your troubled mind this night. Amen.

r8 Kim Cattrall is just tweeting to show what a nice person she is. She should mind her own business.

Kim loves Brent. We all do. She worked with him a number of times going back over 40 years. RIP.

Wonderful actor, and let's not forget his heartbreaking performance in PARADE as Leo Frank.
I always assumed he was gay, but I guess he wasn't out. The reticence of the family seems so 40 years ago.

R12, OP identified the deceased as a Tony winner -- isn't that enough to give you a clue? Would telling you that he was Canadian and listing every play he'd appeared in have helped you that much? I'd like to know his age and cause of death but the details of his career aren't important to me (and if they were, I could easily look the up).

Carver as Feste at Stratford. Lovely rendition.

R20 Canadian Playwright Brad Fraser just released an autobiography "All the Rage" and he states that he and Brent Carver had sex numerous times during the early 90s having met when Carver was cast in Fraser's play Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love. So, yes he was gay.
