JANET CHARLTON 08/06 Breaking up is never easy, but in this case it could be disastrous! Back in the day, this crooner set many female hearts aflutter. He’s been happily married to his socialite wife for decades – but he’s got a secret! While singing all those chart-topping love songs, he was actually dreaming of MEN! He’s been involved in a secret romance with a younger Latin hunk. They were SO in love that they exchanged vows and wedding rings in a Las Vegas ceremony and call each other "husband." Recently he dumped his "husband" and is now hot and heavy with a twenty-something gay porn star! The ex-lover is considering legal action because the singer had promised to take care of him for life, and cut him off without a cent. He’s threatening to expose their gay romance to the singer’s wife and celebrity friends -and he has the PHOTOS to prove it!
Who is this blind item referring to?

Neil Sedaka
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 7, 2020 6:37 AM |
Sedaka all the way. There are many, many stories of him sneaking around with other men. I must say his wife, Leba Strassberg, is a beautiful woman.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 7, 2020 6:44 AM |
Sedaka is way too old to be lusting after some gay porn "star".
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 7, 2020 6:46 AM |
Neil Sedaka.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 7, 2020 6:48 AM |
R4 Did Neil Sedaka ever set females' hearts aflutter, though? He was always average looking in his younger days, and rather schlubby during his mid-70's comeback years.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 7, 2020 6:49 AM |
R6 You'd be surprised - plus Sedaka is loaded from all the song writing income and hit songs and would be attractive to a younger guy looking for a sugar daddy.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 7, 2020 6:50 AM |
R8 Remember Sedaka's demographic in the 50s/60s was teen girls. Teen girls really liked his songs and became fans. And, although Neil wasn't conventionally handsome, he could be marketed as smart and safe, yet still playful. Easy to get teen girls to develop a crush on him.

Thought of Engelbert, but he's 84.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 7, 2020 7:01 AM |
Yeah, I guess the "breaking up is never easy" line of the blind item is probably a reference to "Breaking Up is Hard to Do".
Interestingly, just this morning, during his online "mini-concert", Neil Sedaka sang this song, and dedicated it to "my dear friend Vinnie".
It seems like a "coming out of the closet" song, with not-so-thinly-veiled gay references in the lyrics.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 7, 2020 7:06 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 7, 2020 7:14 AM |
Neil Sedaka does a bizarre cover of The Cure’s “The Lovecats”. The first time a I heard it was in a supermarket and I laughed aloud after the first verse.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 7, 2020 7:14 AM |
I also first thought of Sedaka. But I think those so called teen fans were manufactured groupies by his people.. Nothing about him was teen idol fodder. Now Fabian and Frankie Avalon were different stories. They were considered gorgeous then. Sedaka always looked like dad at the barbeque.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 7, 2020 7:19 AM |
R15 you’re thinking of Paul Amos. He did an album in the early aughts where he did swing covers of pop and rock songs of the 80s and 90s. It’s actually quite good.

Sedaka's songwriting partner of 20 years, Howard Greenfield, was an out gay who died of AIDS at age 49. Not that it means much, just saying.

I looked at the date next to Janet Charlton and thought 08/06 meant the BI was from 2006.

Was Sedaka ever a "crooner"?
Of course, the person who wrote that blind may, erroneously, think that is a synonym for a male singer.

It does mean a male vocalist - a very OLD male vocalist.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 7, 2020 1:07 PM |
[quote]It does mean a male vocalist - a very OLD male vocalist.
No, it does not. It is a particular style of singing, where the male vocalist bends the notes. Like Bing Crosby and early Sinatra.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 7, 2020 1:20 PM |
Darling, R36, I am an elder gay. "Crooner" was a generic word for a male singer who sang ballads way back when. Yes, it was Sinatra and Crosby, but it could also be used for Tom Jones and Paul Anka, though the word was less used in the 60s. No one needs to bend a fucking note.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 7, 2020 1:33 PM |
R1 I'm still laughing. Julio Iglesias probably has more bastards than legal children. It would be amazing that he had time to men between so many women
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 7, 2020 1:36 PM |
R37 It's used on Michael Buble too. The BI seems to indicate that the singer is at least middle age (probably older) but a crooner can be young
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 7, 2020 1:38 PM |
Aren't Bublé and Connick Jr the only two famous "crooners" today? And both make the women swoon
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 7, 2020 1:38 PM |
The key is married to a socialite. - Buble is married to a model as is Connick Jr. Sedaka is married to socialite Strassburg.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 7, 2020 1:43 PM |
Connick's wife is slightly higher class than Bublé's. Surprisingly both models but the former from solid upper middle class background. Could become a "socialite".

Does anyone remember that urban myth that the Captain and Tenile put subliminal lyrics in one of their songs that sounded like “Sedaka is dead”? I can’t remember which song but it was at the end as they were la la la la’ing as the song faded out.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 7, 2020 1:48 PM |

The point is that Sedaka is not publicly out and is married to a socialite. He has two kids so to average fraus of his age it might not be obvious that he also enjoyed peen. The phrasing of the BI points to Sedaka songs.

I've said this in another thread years back:
When Rod Stewart's son was on Howard Stern with Randy Spelling (they were promoting something), Stewart told a story about being in rehab and while there, being relentlessly pursued by an older, famous guy who was also there. I think he even out his hand on his knee or something. He said the name, but Howard dumped it because he didn't want to get sued. A caller who was on hold heard the name and said on some messageboard that he heard it and it was Neil Sedaka.

Definitely Neil Sedaka.
My sister was a teenager when he was popular, and she thought he was dreamy. Back then, girls liked the "safe" boys. He wasn't sexy, but he was considered cute, so a lot of girls were attracted to that. Plus, he sang songs about broken hearts and unrequited love, so they could identify with that.
I'd like to know who the porn star is who's obviously taking financial advantage of the 81-year old Sedaka.

No 1. Yeah, but Sedaka was safe as in "nice," he was never sexual, and never "dreamy" under ANY circumstances. Talk to your sister again if she's real.
No 2. Pre-teen girls ALWAYS liked safe boys who sometimes turned out to be gay. Neil Sedaka was so fucking not a candidate for any of that teen idol crap, he made Johnny Mathis look macho.

R74, Harry Enten is, in fact, a heartthrob of mine. He has hawt Sephardic good looks. Most Sephardic men are hawt. Which makes Neil Sedaka's looks all the more mysterious!
by Anonymous | reply 87 | August 8, 2020 1:18 AM |
R86, I'm not old enough to remember his 60s heyday, but you'd be surprised how many girls and women go crazy over singers and musicians, even the ugliest ones get plenty of groupies. I think some gay men assume that straight women are always attracted to the same type of guys as gay men, which isn't always the case
by Anonymous | reply 88 | August 8, 2020 1:22 AM |
R88, I am old enough. Girls (not women) went nuts over non-threatening youngish male singers; women, more sophisticated, liked fugs who could sing like Sinatra. I'm not surprised and not do I need anyone to teach me. I'm not denying Neil Sedaka had a few pre-adolescents and adult women who idolized him. But the fact is, he had very little sexual appeal, Barry Manilow had more.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | August 8, 2020 1:38 AM |
He’s currently dating a porn man so he must be very sexually active. I don’t think he’s in his 60s. This singer should be in the age range 40 to late 50s. Who was a heartthrob who used to sing ballads love songs who has a deep singing voice?

R90 your argument makes no sense. If you’re implying he has to be in his 40s or 50s to “score” a porn star you’re clueless. Porn stars, like other escorts, will “date” or fuck anything that gives them enough money. It’s not about love or true attraction. It’s about taking viagra to get bank.
If you think that 60 year olds don’t or can’t have sex, also wrong. Neil can take viagra too if needed to top though that’s not always the case. More likely, Neil may be into bottoming or sucking dick or giving massages.
When you have the money he has he can always find someone hot to pay for sex
by Anonymous | reply 93 | August 8, 2020 2:33 AM |
The thing we forget about artists from that early rock and roll era is that there weren't many avenues for their fans to actually see them perform. If they didn't come to your city to perform, then there were only 3 television networks, broadcasting a limited number of hours. There were some TV variety shows, but a lot of them didn't showcase the younger generation of performers very much, so there were a lot of popular performers who rarely got seen by the masses. They were mostly voices on the radio, and faces on the picture sleeves of 45s and album covers. I imagine there were some teen magazines that wrote about them as well.
So it is plausible that an average-looking guy like Neil Sedaka, with a few flattering picture sleeves/album covers, and some phony teenybopper magazine articles portraying him as a dreamboat, could be taken for something somewhat akin to a teen heartthrob. Fans didn't get to see much of their favorites back then, so they tended to fill in the blanks with their own imagination.

Dad had a new girlfriend (after meeting her at a grief support group) and apparently, dad and his 75 year old lady friend like sex as much as anyone else.
