I’d love to see The Powers That Be again. It died way too quickly.

I also really liked The Class, which was trying really hard to be Friends, but I actually liked the first few episodes a lot, before the writing entered a death spiral.

The Ellery Queen Mysteries, a failure which became the prototype for Murder She Wrote.

It had a campy 1940s setting, and Jim Hutton would address the camera just before the final act: "I've got it! And I bet you do too. You've seen all the clues and there's only one person who could have killed So-and-So..."

What was the show with John Larroquette and he worked inside a train station? It was NBC, Wednesday or Thursday nights. It was very offbeat. I remember Elizabeth Berridge played a dykey police officer, and there was this blind black guy. But it was a very funny show.

It is always one of two things.

Either it's a music rights issue or there are broadcast rights issues -- usually between studios and/or distribution companies.

by Anonymousreply 57August 5, 2020 1:13 PM

I want Knots, Dynasty and Dallas to stream. They might in the US, but in Canada we get fuck all on Netflix and Prime. And Hulu isn't even a thing, here.

Threads like this are always a reminder of how many great shows over the years, once they finished their original network runs, just seemed to completely vanish off the face of the planet. Other shows go into off-network reruns forever and never disappear while others never get that syndicated push (despite having been popular while on the air).

This is also why I get annoyed sometimes with the "classics" TV networks like MeTV, Antenna TV and so on -- there are so many shows in the vaults they could use to populate their schedules and instead we get never-ending cycles of "The Andy Griffith Show" and "MASH." Two great shows to be sure but enough is enough. Let's see something else for a change.

American Dreams- it was a cheesy show, but I loved it. I doubt it will ever put on streaming to music copyright issues.

Another vote for Northern Exposure.

Also Freaks and Geeks.

by Anonymousreply 76August 5, 2020 5:26 PM

Northern Exposure is in my top five shows ever.

Anyone remember Parker Lewis Can't Lose with Corin Nemec, or one with Chad Lowe? Both were protohipsters but lovable.

by Anonymousreply 77August 5, 2020 5:52 PM

Some of these I can't see any streaming service bothering with.

Like Freaks and Geeks and The Powers that Be. Really good shows but they only had 13 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 78August 5, 2020 6:11 PM

R78 there are 6-episode British series with only 13 episodes, and they do well streaming. I hope the services reconsider because a short series is perfect for a binge.

by Anonymousreply 79August 5, 2020 6:14 PM

Another vote for “Homefront”, which I LOVED during its network run (especially its outstanding first season.) Kyle Chandler and Tammy Lauren were adorable, and Mimi Kennedy and Sammi Davis brought depth and humanity to their antagonist characters.

And going further back, “The Name of the Game”. I was a little too young to see it during its original network airing, but I enjoyed episodes later in syndication. Interesting stories cleverly presented, GREAT guest-stars, and a terrific theme song!

It's Like, You Know. It aired on ABC in 1999. Smart and clever. Was sometimes considered the LA version of Seinfeld. Starred Steven Eckholdt, Evan Handler, A. J. Langer, and Jennifer Grey.

It was building a loyal following, but ABC canceled it when it decided to air Who Wants To Be a Millionaire multiple times a week.

I have a soft spot for Gimme A Break. I have the entire series on DVD when it was available for a short time about 10 years ago, but sometimes it's too much effort actually get up to put a disc in the player. Pressing buttons while I'm cozy in my recliner in so much easier. Also, I'd love to see Wonder Falls again, a short lived but charming series on Fox about 15 years ago.
