Yes, I know I’m naive, but do you honestly think that Mercedes would have dropped Hamilton if he had come out? Would the sponsors ditch a talented athlete who wins championships just because he’s gay? Is that realistic these days? We are not talking about Navratilova’s era here.

I believe it’s very possible for a high profile athlete in an individual sport to come out. Think about it, some talented prodigy tennis player or an F1 driver in his early 20’s who’s been winning for a few years and has a large following and a bit of fuck-you money stashed away. It would have to be someone with solid mental resiliency, obviously, to deal with the initial backlash. But would he lose all his endorsements and the majority of his fans? I’d like to think that wouldn’t happen.

This might be different in team sports, but then again, as a team owner I’d rather have ten gay Messis or Michael Jordans on my team than none at all.
