“DOCTOR Jill Biden” - Why does the media push and even accentuate this title?
Mrs. Biden has really milked her community college background to absurd lengths.
It’s true, she earned something called an EdD., which is given to people pursuing management in education. Unlike a PhD. however, an EdD. is not routinely awarded for those pursuing research or teaching at universities. Referring to her as “doctor” is much like referring to a lawyer as a doctor. I currently consult to a large research university in Massachusetts and none of the leaders or academics ever refer to one another as “doctor”, just by their first or last names.
Insisting on being called “doctor”, especially when the qualifier has been achieved by such a razor’s edge margin is far from the norm and not remotely considered or even intended to be a commonly used social or professional title.
Michelle Obama was never referred to as “doctor” even though she had honorary doctorates and an actual Juris Doctor long before going to the White House. And if anyone in D.C. deserves that title to be used, it would be her. President Obama is also a doctor with his J.D and he never went by “Doctor Obama”.
Ms. Jill needs needs sit that down a while and focus on being the First Lady.
And while she’s at it, maybe an age and FLOTUS-appropriate hemline. The baby-doll and knee-skirt length dresses are a little weird. She’s gotta knock it off with the whole Florida hooker-tan and short skirt shit.

I think OP has a legitimate point. Flaunting the credentials is absurd and pretentious.
It has nothing to do with supporting Biden, which anybody with a brain will do.

You beat me to the reply, R1...LOL. If it "consults to a large research university" and its just exhibited the limits of his reasoning, I weep for whatever "research" is being produced.
Trollshit :)

I cringe when academics ask to be referred to by their doctorate. If someone is having a heart attack and yells for a doctor, they don’t mean a pompous nerd who got a Ph.D in Russian Literature.
Med school, residencies, and internships are astronomically more challenging than reading and writing books for a few years, and it’s embarrassing to even expect to be compared to that.
I think it also bit Blasey Ford in the ass too.

It’s interesting the way doctors are revered in the US, and yet in the UK, they don’t seem to garner much respect. Both Kate and Gerry McCann (parents to missing Madeleine) are medical doctors, but the press always refers to them as “Mr and Mrs McCann.”

Ed.Ds typically insist on being called "doctor" because they rightfully perceive themselves as holding worthless degrees no one respects. I would never ask people to call me "doctor" because it's tacky.

Notice how the OP doesn't bother to back up his claim that Jill Biden "has really milked her community college background" or that she is personally "insisting on being called 'doctor'." He simply asserts it.

I have two PhDs (not bragging—in retrospect, the second one was a why bother). I would never ask someone to address me as “Dr.” At some schools, it’s the convention; at others (usually tonier schools), it’s a sign of being “nouveau,” usually reserved for recent grads. That said, I think it’s petty to use Dr. for a PhD and not for EdD. They are both doctorate degrees. Lawyers almost never use the title Dr. “Esq” is their professional prevention.

R17 I knew someone would accuse me of humblebrag. I did the second one as a way of getting funding for a full sabbatical year as much as anything. Anyone who has gone through a decent undergrad can write a dissertation—it takes long hard work more than anything remotely like original intelligence.

I worked with a pretentious, pompous guy with a doctorate in education who insisted on being called "Dr." including in print. He was pissed when he found out our style is to write John Smith, Ph.D.; John Smith, M.D.; John Smith, Ed.D.; etc.
Then he made a big deal out of how it wasn't necessary to list his degree--so humble!
I've met Dr. Jill Biden a few times--she has some of the hallmarks of being a wonderful person--and she would be a monumental improvement for the country compared to its current First Lady.

the title of "doctor" originally had nothing whatsoever to do with medical practitioners. it was solely an academic distinction.
so stop crying about "doctor" being co-opted by non-medicals. YOU snooty-asses are the co-optors, and are just afraid of anyone having any kind of status on par with you.

Most physicians refer to themselves when amongst colleagues, as physicians instead of doctors. At least the ones that I’m around. For instance if they think you’re a physician they’ll ask “are you a physician?”instead of “are you a doctor?”
