Moving forward, we must establish a framework of standards that must be met before a high-risk, foreign-based app is allowed to operate on American telecommunications networks and devices.”

In reference to R94 - Trump suspending ads: New York Times wrote about it. In case you're paywalled:
“Everyday is a bad day for Trump at this point. The Coronavirus is raging, the economy is tanking. He’s losing in the polls. He suspended his campaign ads with less than 100 days to go in the election (an absolute disaster in politics). Anything that distracts from these headlines is beneficial at this point.” The Trump campaign temporarily suspends TV advertising to review its strategy.
The Trump campaign has completely gone off the air, temporarily suspending all television advertising nationwide as the campaign undertakes a “review” of its advertising strategy under the new campaign manager, Bill Stepien. “With the leadership change in the campaign, there’s understandably a review and fine-tuning of the campaign’s strategy,” a campaign official said. “We’ll be back on the air shortly.”
The pause comes after several weeks of attacks against Mr. Trump’s opponent, Mr. Biden, on policing issues. The campaign spent more than $30 million since early July on television and digital ads that sought to sow fear and division about the racial justice protests around the country and falsely depict them as violent. Mr. Trump’s campaign has been prolific on the airwaves since last September, when it began advertising during the impeachment process, and it has continued at a significant pace. Since last January, the campaign has spent $202 million in television and digital advertising, according to Advertising Analytics, an ad tracking firm. Mr. Biden, by comparison, has spent about $95 million over the same period. While it has temporarily paused its advertising, the Trump campaign still has more than $146 million in television and radio ads booked through November, a number that far outpaces the Biden campaign. None of those reservations have been altered or shifted yet as part of the current review.
Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday that his campaign would roll out “a new ad campaign” attacking Mr. Biden on Monday. “He has been brought even further LEFT than Crazy Bernie Sanders ever thought possible,” the president added. Though the campaign is not on television at the moment, it is still advertising on Facebook, with dozens of active ads. The campaign spent nearly $4 million on the platform over the past week. The complete pause in advertising followed the campaign’s recent decision to suspend advertising in Michigan, a battleground state that Mr. Trump won by less than 11,000 votes in 2016.

I'd heard they stopped ads in Michigan; are other states on the no-ads list, too? His campaign is still running them online, to judge from one of the other threads.
[quote]Then why all the non-stop fundraising gigs? Where is all that money going?
To the Trump overseas no-tax bank account, of course! Just like all the other campaign donations and inaugural funding etc. etc.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | August 1, 2020 2:32 PM |
[quote]are other states on the no-ads list, too?
Yes. They've stopped all radio and tv ad spending and have almost no ad buys planned for the month of August. This is part of a "review and fine-tuning of the campaign's strategy" that they're doing following the ouster of Parscale. This does not include digital advertising.

And even if he does issue that executive order, it will immediately be challenged in court and is likely to be largely impractical and impotent (much like Donald Trump), since the technical ability to carry out that order is lacking.

by Anonymous | reply 133 | August 1, 2020 3:52 PM |
What does her age have to do with anything!
by Anonymous | reply 134 | August 1, 2020 3:56 PM |
I can't believe it took until R52 to come up with the correct answer. He's wanting to do this because of Sarah Cooper. Do you think he cares anything at all about potential Chinese data gathering? That's hilarious! He doesn't care about anything that isn't about him. Why are you all of a sudden granting him a level of thinking of which he is not capable?
Besides, we live in a post-privacy world now. If you're really worried about "people" knowing all about you, you had better smash your cell phone and computer right now, get off the internet, and never get back on.
The best thing about all of this is that he is trying to do something that he doesn't have the power to do so, besides not accomplishing his stated goal, he is just doing yet one more thing to piss people off and for no achievement whatsoever in the end. That is an example of having whatever the opposite is of political insticts.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | August 1, 2020 4:10 PM |
God, you're dumb, R134. You like her, don't you?
The point of mentioning her age was that she's not in the normal TikTok demographic, making her success even more puzzling to me.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | August 1, 2020 4:11 PM |
Well, personally, r133, I'd say that you're missing a sense of humor, but that's just me.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | August 1, 2020 4:18 PM |
Okay, then explain to me why it's funny, R137. Thrill me with your acumen.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | August 1, 2020 4:20 PM |
If Biden said ban TikTok because it was Russian spyware you’d all be cheering.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | August 1, 2020 4:20 PM |
For those who understand, R138, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, no explanation would suffice.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | August 1, 2020 4:30 PM |
No, R139, we wouldn't, because we aren't as stupid as you are.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | August 1, 2020 4:31 PM |
Ah, so in other words you can't explain it, R140.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | August 1, 2020 4:31 PM |
No, I wouldn't. Just as with this, I'd say "caveat emptor." It's fine to share real information/data with people so they can decide whether it is worth it to them or not; no one has to make the decision for me. Besides, the country involved doesn't much matter, so you could have written, "If Biden said it was Chinese spyware..."; no one is debating this because of the country involved. It could have just as well been Australian spyware and people would hopefully still be concerned...although no one seems to care that Facebook is American spyware. You don't see any national politician calling THAT out.
Biden would at least be mentioning it because he thought it would be affecting the American people. The Toddler is only stating it for himself and his own reasons.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | August 1, 2020 4:33 PM |
Ugh, is this going to accidentally make TikTok cool?
by Anonymous | reply 144 | August 1, 2020 4:33 PM |
Not to someone so determinedly ignorant, R142, no. I repeat "no explanation would suffice," since you've already made up your mind. The fact that you completely and totally missed what Cooper is doing and how she's doing it, and that millions of others have not should have told you something.
Sadly, I doubt it will.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | August 1, 2020 4:35 PM |
Maybe this will get rid of a.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | August 1, 2020 4:39 PM |
Honestly, R145 - I'm trying to figure out what I'm missing. That's why I phrased it that way in my original question.
Why is it supposed to be so funny, when all she does is lip synch? I'm willing to be educated.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | August 1, 2020 4:42 PM |
R147, not your sparring partner, but, for those of us who think it is clever and funny, it's because she is able to take the exact recording yet make it a parody simply by adding in facial expressions and visual asides (like sniffing the marker in the latest one) or the cut-away characters like the woman with the glasses in the "person, woman, man, camera, TV" clip to show that Trump is a complete idiot. It highlights the absurdity of it all.
That stated, I agree with the other poster completely in that, if you don't get it, you don't get it and this explanation will be rejected and not make sense to you.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | August 1, 2020 4:46 PM |
R136, perhaps you are the dumb. There are many hundreds of thousands of people and popular accounts over 30. We Understand: you cling to overbroad, simplistic generalizations and short circuit when confronted with circumstances that don’t fit into that generalization.

NBC News today: The Trump campaign is shifting its strategy to put more focus on early-voting states, according to campaign officials — one of the most noticeable changes so far under the new campaign manager Bill Stepien.
The campaign will start running fresh attack ads Monday in key early-voting states such as Michigan and North Carolina, two officials said, with the assumption that more than half the ballots in 2020 will be cast before Election Day.
“Votes start getting cast in a little over a month,” a campaign official said. “While the clock says 94, 95 days, this election is right on top of us.”

"Not to be overlooked either is Trump's previous experience with TikTok.
Last month users claimed to have scuppered his Tulsa rally after signing up to tickets they had no intention of using.
And although there are Republican and conservative voices on TikTok, the profile of users in the US is generally young and liberal/left.
It's hard to believe that's not a factor here."
by Anonymous | reply 155 | August 1, 2020 8:32 PM |
It was a "Tiktok Grandma" who started the massive trolling effort to fuck with his rally in Tulsa. So there.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | August 1, 2020 9:12 PM |
Lots of analysis of why he’s posturing a ban (as if he’s able to do it!), mostly centering on anger at China or the Anti-Trump mischief of TikTok users.
I think the real reason is different. Trump admires dictators, the power they have over their people. The asshole has openly stated as much!
What’s one thing dictators do all the time in the 21st century? They limit access of the people to social media. Trump is just mimicking what he’s seen the Russians, Chinese and North Koreans do.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | August 1, 2020 9:24 PM |
Yeah
by Anonymous | reply 158 | August 1, 2020 9:50 PM |
Tiktok didn't fuck with the rally, they were not "reserved seats" tickets. So it didn't matter how many people signed up for it. And if they used real information to do so, all they did was provide the Trump campaign with a lot of user data. Totally pointless, much like TikTok Grandma who today dramatically told her fellow tweens to "be strong, we will get through this" as if she was being led to the ovens.

by Anonymous | reply 161 | August 1, 2020 11:31 PM |
R159, the point was Trump publicly humiliated. He BRAGGED about the "Millions" of people who wanted to attend his Tulsa rally to find out he was trolled by TikTok and K-Pop teenagers. This is the only time I've seen him without his tie and looking unkempt. Never mind the 100,000+ Covid deaths, this really upset and devastated him. It's like he can't function without his big rallies.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | August 2, 2020 1:03 AM |
R162 that was his former campaign manager doing the bragging.
Tiktokers had no impact on the rally.

You sure like defending him, R163, are you sure you don't work for Fox News?
Here is a You-Tube video where Trump is bragging about his rally in his own words and voice. "We have had so many sign-ups.....Over a million people requested tickets!"

R133 Well, that's tiktok in a nutshell. People, mostly kids, lip syncing to something while having an idiotic expression on their faces. It's especially sad when grown-ups do it. Now, I never heard if this lady or seen anything by her, bit if she's tiktok popular, I already know she's as funny as testicular cancer.

R159, Yes they did fuck with the rally. If the Trump admin knew those sign ups were false, they wouldn't have been boasting a packed attendance, and organizing an outdoor gathering to accommodate for the overflow. They got fooled, period. As for Brad Parscale's response when trying to cover up for this goof, that so called "lot's of user data" they provided was all JUNK data. It's useless. Do you think they were honestly entering their own personal email addresses and information? It made a mess of all their reporting and modeling. That's why the Trumper's took that form down once it was revealed they were being played.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | August 2, 2020 11:58 AM |
My nieces and nephews were among those who signed up for “tickets.”
They gave totally false “data” and were giggling with glee when they heard the Orange Julius and his team bragging about how big the Tulsa event was going to be based on that garbage.

[quote]Tiktok didn't fuck with the rally
You missed the point. What the Tiktok effort did was fuck with their numbers and with the quality of the information the Trump administration received. Because of those bogus registrations, Parscale and Trump were openly bragging about a million people wanting to attend and preparing for overflow sessions and massive crowds.
They got humiliated and the information they got was so tainted that it had to basically be discarded.

Trump's comments were stupid and there's no way he will, or can, "ban" TikTok but it is actually true that the TikTok app is pretty bad in its data harvesting and user tracking and in the permissions it requests.

Okay, I'll try. It's her impeccable lip-synching (you do know that entire network programs have been built around this skill?). It's her facial expressions. It's often her non-speaking "other" (doctor, e.g.). And it's the inherent idiocy of Trump's vocabulary and syntax.
