Some people NEED to live in a world of us-vs-them, of blind trust and blind hatred. They actually need to hate and fear someone, to reinforce the blind trust. If they didn't believe some outsider was such a serious threat that they need to cling to their trusted circle or group, and forgive anyone within the group everything, because they can't cope with a complex world. And I suspect, because they have no other way of forming relationships or feeling they belong, without an external thread to bind people together. Of course maintaining cohesion and protecting everyone in the group means sacrificing the occasional child to Creepy Uncle Bill or Epstein's good pal Trump, but they were worthless little sluts anyway and didn't belong.

That's one thing that a lot of people don't understand about the wacko-conservative mindset... it's largely based on an overwhelming sense of fear, and most of the irrational behaviors are attempts to protect the self and the group from whatever the fear is projected onto at the moment.
