Has Any Straight Actor Played Gay In the Movies More Than Once?

It seems like they all do it once to make themselves look PC and edgy. Who has played gay or lesbian more than once?

I can’t remember....

by Anonymousreply 130October 9, 2020 8:16 AM

Ewan McGregor

Michael Sheen

by Anonymousreply 1July 29, 2020 4:34 PM

What films r1?

by Anonymousreply 2July 29, 2020 4:35 PM

Ewan- Velvet Goldmine and I Love You Philip Morris. There are others but I know those off the top of my head.

Michael-Wilde and Fabulosa

by Anonymousreply 3July 29, 2020 4:38 PM

"It seems like they all do it once to make themselves look PC and edgy."

If they refused to play characters you'd call them bigots....but if they do they're (heaven forbid!) "PC"

by Anonymousreply 4July 29, 2020 4:39 PM

Colin Firth has played multiple gay roles.

by Anonymousreply 5July 29, 2020 4:39 PM

Jude Law - Wilde and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

by Anonymousreply 6July 29, 2020 4:39 PM

Helen Lawson as Sappho, Goddess of Love of Love and Coach Diesel in The Miracle Team. Of course, nothing is explicitly stated but the subtext could not be more obvious.

by Anonymousreply 7July 29, 2020 4:48 PM

Kevin Kline - In and Out and De-Lovely

by Anonymousreply 8July 29, 2020 4:50 PM

Armie Hammer:

Call Me By Your Name

J. Edgar

Final Portrait

by Anonymousreply 9July 29, 2020 4:51 PM

I remember Lawson's playful shower catfight with the young Debbie Reynonlds in The Miracle Team. It's amazing such a thing was released in a mainstream American film in 1957.

by Anonymousreply 10July 29, 2020 5:03 PM

Hugh Grant - Maurice and A Very English Scandal

by Anonymousreply 11July 29, 2020 5:04 PM

R10 all was well until Agnes Moorehead came to the set to visit Debbie. Needless to say, it ended in tears and snatched wigs.

by Anonymousreply 12July 29, 2020 5:06 PM

Catherine Deneuve: Repulsion and The Hunger

by Anonymousreply 13July 29, 2020 5:11 PM

Sam Heughan, A Plague over England and a Very British Sex Scandal. He seems to be closeted but claims to be hetero

by Anonymousreply 14July 29, 2020 5:12 PM

[quote]it ended in tears and snatched wigs.

And probably some wigged snatches as well.

by Anonymousreply 15July 29, 2020 5:13 PM

Lol r15.

Merkin.

by Anonymousreply 16July 29, 2020 5:14 PM

Tom Hanks - Philadelphia and That Thing You Do (sort of - there's a scene that was edited out of the final cut that makes it clear his character is gay, although you wouldn't know if you hadn't seen that particular scene)

by Anonymousreply 17July 29, 2020 5:29 PM

Any straight actor desperate for an award.

by Anonymousreply 18July 29, 2020 5:48 PM

Jake Gyllenhaal - Brokeback Mountain and Velvet Buzzsaw. And I feel like his character in The Sisters Brothers could have been gay.

by Anonymousreply 19July 29, 2020 5:54 PM

Jake Gyllenhaal did BROKEBACK and VELVET BUZZSAW.

by Anonymousreply 20July 29, 2020 5:57 PM

lol R20

by Anonymousreply 21July 29, 2020 5:57 PM

What scene, R17?

by Anonymousreply 22July 29, 2020 6:06 PM

Jake's not straight, so.....

by Anonymousreply 23July 29, 2020 6:09 PM

R11 - Hugh Grant - Maurice and A Very English Scandal

Hugh also did Our Sons, a TV movie about the mothers of a gay couple.

But it does seem like Colin Firth wins this thread. Apartment Zero, Where the Truth Lies, Mamma Mia (and sequel), A Single Man.

by Anonymousreply 24July 29, 2020 6:20 PM

[quote]I remember Lawson's playful shower catfight with the young Debbie Reynonlds in The Miracle Team. It's amazing such a thing was released in a mainstream American film in 1957.

More below-the-waist hair pulling than in Valley of the Dolls.

by Anonymousreply 25July 29, 2020 6:24 PM

Steve Carrell

by Anonymousreply 26July 29, 2020 6:31 PM

Sir Michael Caine:

California Suite

Deathtrap

And both characters were named "Sidney!"

by Anonymousreply 27July 29, 2020 6:45 PM

Richard Burton in Villain and Staircase

by Anonymousreply 28July 29, 2020 6:48 PM

Matt Damon - The Talented Mr Ripley and Behind the Candelabra

by Anonymousreply 29July 29, 2020 7:19 PM

Dan Futterman - Urbania, Will & Grace

by Anonymousreply 30July 29, 2020 7:41 PM

[quote] Jake's not straight, so.....

But he is CUT, okay?

by Anonymousreply 31July 29, 2020 7:45 PM

Peter Finch:

"The Trials of Oscar Wilde" aka "The Man with the Green Carnation" (Look at that movie poster!)

Technically Jake plays bisexual in Velvet Buzzsaw. I think he's playing himself. There always seems to be a wink wink to the audience there.

by Anonymousreply 33July 29, 2020 8:50 PM

Tom Hardy.

RocknRoller The gay twin in Legend

Though "playing" might not be the right word.

by Anonymousreply 34July 29, 2020 9:00 PM

No mention of John Michael Higgins?, and yes, he is straight.

by Anonymousreply 35July 29, 2020 9:07 PM

Robin WIlliams:

The Birdcage

The Night Listener

by Anonymousreply 36July 29, 2020 9:20 PM

Does her character even have a sexuality in Repulsion, R13? She has played at least 3 lesbian characters though, including The Hunger.

Natasha Lyonne - But I'm a Cheerleader, Addicted to Fresno and I think she also plays the girlfriend of Clea DuVall in an indie movie

Emily Blunt - My Summer of Love and Sunshine Cleaning (the last one is probably more of a bisexual though)

Emma Stone - Battle of the Sexes and The Favourite (the last one probably also more of a bisexual)

Kate Winslet - Heavenly Creatures and a movie that is coming up, Ammonite

Lots of female actresses seem to do it quite often.

by Anonymousreply 37July 29, 2020 9:28 PM

James Marsden. The 24th day (saw a thread here about this recently) and Heights.

God of only...

by Anonymousreply 38July 29, 2020 9:49 PM

IF only

by Anonymousreply 39July 29, 2020 9:51 PM

[quote]James Marsden. The 24th day (saw a thread here about this recently) and Heights.

Also at the end of the film "Sex Drive" his character is revealed to be gay and his character hooks up with Jack Black in "The D Train".

by Anonymousreply 43July 29, 2020 10:08 PM

R43, very, very straight.

by Anonymousreply 44July 29, 2020 10:10 PM

R30 Dear gods, I STILL have a crush on Futterman.

by Anonymousreply 47July 29, 2020 10:36 PM

James Franco - Milk, King Cobra, The Broken Tower, Howl, Interior - Leather Bar

by Anonymousreply 48July 29, 2020 10:38 PM

Ryan Carnes in Eating Out, Desperate Housewives, and General Hospital

by Anonymousreply 49July 29, 2020 10:42 PM

Buzzer for R49 - the subject is actors in MOVIES, not TV shows, sweetie.

by Anonymousreply 50July 29, 2020 10:53 PM

Timothée Chalamet

by Anonymousreply 51July 29, 2020 10:55 PM

"Sir Michael Caine: California Suite, Deathtrap"

He also played trans in "Dressed To Kill".

by Anonymousreply 52July 29, 2020 10:58 PM

Philip Seymour Hoffman.

CAPOTE BOOGIE NIGHTS

by Anonymousreply 53July 29, 2020 11:03 PM

Do the guys at Sean Cody count? Because not a single one of them is "gay"!

Antonio Banderas

by Anonymousreply 58July 29, 2020 11:08 PM

You seriously couldn't think of a single actor who has played gay more than once OP? It isn't rare.

by Anonymousreply 59July 29, 2020 11:16 PM

PSH was awfully fey in "The Talented Mr. Ripley", though I guess his character was (mostly) straight.

by Anonymousreply 60July 29, 2020 11:17 PM

Finn Wittrock- "Masters of Sex", "Locating Silverlake", "ACS: Versace", "The Normal Heart", and kinda "AHS: Hotel"

by Anonymousreply 61July 29, 2020 11:21 PM

We’re all doing the work for some tragic buzzfeed quiz writer and/or some lazy assistant whose boss is producing a gay movie.

by Anonymousreply 62July 29, 2020 11:39 PM

Armie Hammer - J. Edgar, Final Portrait, CMBYN. Although even his straight characters come off as flaming queens (On the Basis of Sex, for starters).

by Anonymousreply 63July 29, 2020 11:57 PM

Patrick Stewart:

Tobi in "Match"

Sterling in "Jeffrey"

by Anonymousreply 64July 30, 2020 12:07 AM

Michael Caine also played gay in Miss Congeniality

by Anonymousreply 65July 30, 2020 12:32 AM

Hasn't Al Pacino played gay or questioning characters more than once?

by Anonymousreply 66July 30, 2020 1:36 AM

R37 Natasha is bi

by Anonymousreply 67July 30, 2020 1:42 AM

Alfred Molina

by Anonymousreply 68July 30, 2020 1:43 AM

Michael Caine seems to be gay in Miss Congeniality.

by Anonymousreply 69July 30, 2020 2:30 AM

John Hurt:

Partners

Even Cowgirls Get the Blues

Life and Death on Long Island

An Englishman in New York

by Anonymousreply 70July 30, 2020 3:21 AM

Daniel Day-Lewis: My Beautiful Laundrette and Lincoln

by Anonymousreply 72July 30, 2020 7:07 AM

Tony Randall

by Anonymousreply 73July 30, 2020 7:48 AM

Dan Futterman also was in "The Birdcage" with Nathan Lane and Robin Williams

by Anonymousreply 74July 30, 2020 8:22 AM

Brad Rowe ('memba him?): Billy's Hollywood Screen Kiss, Shelter

by Anonymousreply 75July 30, 2020 10:55 AM

Patrick Stewart also played gay in the film version of Jeffrey.

by Anonymousreply 76July 30, 2020 11:03 AM

R19 Jake G. is gay so he doesn't count.

by Anonymousreply 77July 30, 2020 11:07 AM

R24 Hugh Grant also played gay in The Gentlemen.

by Anonymousreply 78July 30, 2020 11:08 AM

Rupert Graves - Maurice & Clapham Junction

James Wilby - Maurice & Clapham Junction

by Anonymousreply 79July 30, 2020 11:12 AM

True, r74, but his character was straight in that

by Anonymousreply 80July 30, 2020 11:40 AM

R79 I forgot about them. I swore that Rupert Graves was gay, but he isn’t! Wife and five children. So humpy at one time.

by Anonymousreply 81July 30, 2020 12:00 PM

R60 He, like everyone else in the movie (and the audience), seemed hot for Jude Law.

by Anonymousreply 82July 30, 2020 12:02 PM

Hugh Jackman in Bad Education and The Boy from Oz.

by Anonymousreply 83July 30, 2020 12:03 PM

I thought Tony Randall only played one gay role. Felix was not gay, he was a very fussy straight man.

by Anonymousreply 100July 30, 2020 3:56 PM

Banderas played gay in Pain and Glory and pretends to be gay in a scene in Femme Fatale. Is Lucas Hedges straight? He played gay in Lady Bird and Boy Erased.

by Anonymousreply 101July 30, 2020 4:03 PM

Harris Dickinson in BEACH RATS and POSTCARDS FROM LONDON.

I really disliked BEACH RATS, but just watched POSTCARDS tonight. Highly stylized, extremely arty, very pretentious, and gay, Gay, GAY. For fans of Harris, it's basically a 90-minute wet dream. (He really is fucking gorgeous.)

Banderas played gay for Almodovar way back in the early1980s in Laberinto de pasiones (Labyrinth of Passion). And he's not exactly straight in real life.

by Anonymousreply 113July 31, 2020 8:03 AM

John Michael Higgins is straight?

by Anonymousreply 115July 31, 2020 8:21 AM

R110 Well, no one is straight on DL

by Anonymousreply 116July 31, 2020 9:01 AM

Banderas was Almodóvar's muse for ages, so he had a lot more opportunities to play gay than most actors. (Some of them were even in front of a film camera!)

by Anonymousreply 117July 31, 2020 3:37 PM
