R4--I think you've hit the nail on the head. They were asking her to take a hiatus for a few months and telling her she would have a big storyline when she returned. They'd then have no problem working around her not returning.

So she figured she could take this chance to pursue her dream of starring in a revival of "Spring Awakening."

She gets 5 months off and the opportunity for a new story and a brand new love interest. What else does she have going on? I’m assuming that she’s set financially. Unless one of the other soaps offers her a role, she’s sort of limited at this point. Does she really want to start auditioning again? Off choice.

I think another one did something (maybe a little handsy) and demanded he be dismissed. Can’t blame her with that. There was a time when she was a full on diva. She banned a particular writer from the set because she didn't like something she wrote. Back then Days was the darling of the soap press - they sold covers. From what I heard the writer told the show "well if she wants me to write bad things about her I have plenty I can choose from," and she suddenly was allowed back on the set and guess who became her BFF?

But let's be honest. When was the last time Hope had a decent story? I'll say Princess Gina back in 1999. I think people liked her and Patrick Lockhart. But she has the Genie Francis problem. She was the half of a supercouple that couldn't survive without the other half. And watch Frank bring her over to GH to add to the bloat of that cast.

R20 I agree. The original Princess Gina storyline should not have worked on paper, but she definitely made it work. The show set a mood with great background music and exotic hairstyles for her and endless conversations about the compact. And she worked it, even the infamous submarine sex with John.

She was quite zaftig when she first joined the show.

This is a budget issue so they can have other actors and MOSTLY so that she can have a major nip tuck like Eileen Davidson did. She’ll be back but it will be awhile and she’ll have a new hairstyle and makeup. Davidson just did the same thing and just started showing up on RHOBH.

IIRC when she left during the 90s she had a lot of things to say about the show and are jell. She said he had called her fat (which if true is awful) and she hated working with him and didn’t expect to come back she did a few years later. I think she will eventually come back at least for a final swan song if the show ever gets canceled.

This really is DAYS' final season or so. I get the same stink from all of this that was on the last year or so of Guiding Light. They are cutting budgets left and right to try to stay alive, but the cuts will eventually kill it.

DAYS production values are already shit, but I think the show is still pretty good in spite of that. I can’t fathom how they’re going to cut production values even lower and survive though.

I don't agree that this is Days final season. I think they are making smart choices to keep the show on the air. I wish they would write the show "smaller". Which basically means write the show for the budget they have and not like it's 1994 when they had shitloads of money. I think all the shows could use a reset.

Something similar happened years ago when the cast was told to either accept pay cuts or be taken off contract in order to cut down the show's budget and when some actors refused to do either, they were let go with quite a few invited back - and returning to their roles. As for Alfonso, Hope hasn't had a good story line in some time and is rarely seen interacting with very many other characters. Her most recent arc as Princess Gina wasn't very good and some other stories in which she was involved were equally bad if not worse. Among the latter was the Hope and Aiden relationship which also led to Hope's daughter Ciara being raped her potential stepbrother Chase, a story which is still universally hated by Days fans to this day.

R47 one of those times led to DL icon "Dee Dee" Hall coming on here to rant about "that fucker Roy Corday" firing her.

r51 Soap Opera Magazine was owned by the National Enquirer - it got sold to a German company that owned Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly.

At the time Soap Opera Magazine came around - SOD and Weekly both were Days heavy. They would have 10 times as many covers for Days than any other show. when SOM came around they were more open to giving covers and features to other shows. Suddenly the other magazines were losing stories and scoops to SOM because they were giving covers to other shows.

Days got so many covers because it was guaranteed to sell. Someone explained it on here way back in the day during the soap thread craze. It was Days, General Hospital, and I think AMC covers that were always the biggest sellers for the soap mags.

I recently saw her turkey neck, mentioned above. Did she not get along with Reckhell?
