As much as I reject (abhor) the Abrahamic religions myself, I have to say that if the Black American community had not had the rock solid devotion and belief in religion we would not have survived. We may have even attacked the white community once free and been wiped out by now. It is simply not possible to endure the wall of hatred and violence aimed at your person without some strong belief in a power greater than yourself.
So that asshole Jamie and the rest of those white people on that show can make fun all they want, but in order to be Black in the white world you need some faith to keep from becoming violent and hateful yourself.

That’s great R1, so genuinely happy for you and your faith in community spirit. You are correct on several counts, and there is no denying that the Black Christian contingent in the U.S.A. have made profound contributions to policy and to culture. Of course, many Africans & Caribbean peoples in their own countries are or were animistic Pagans forcibly converted by American & European Missionaries, ancestors of the current U.S. Good Christian Citizen...but that’s none of my business..
My post was not intended to mock or detract from POC, but rather to point out that Abrahamic faith is not an attractive or apt philosophy to follow for some and that pestering evangelism is a bit silly and rude. My aim was to collect examples of people in the public eye who feel similarly to me about these widely-accepted faiths, because it’s useful to know who one’s people are and because no-one ever discusses such a thing here - even on Spiritual threads. Maybe it’s too taboo, idk. Wouldn’t Jesus himself want you to be open-minded and more welcoming to those of differing beliefs and mindsets?
I myself am not Christian, American or Black and don’t personally know anyone of this particular identification either, so I will see your valid comment and exercise my equal right to give not one fuck about what Christian African-Americans get up to. Enlightening as the topic may be, it is not germane to the conversation to go into depth on it (do you not have thread-starting privileges, yet?).
Sidebar, love it when Abrahamics jump down the throat of Pagans (of all colours and creed, yes there are thousands of POC Pagans) for their ‘privilege’. We don’t have rights like Christians & Muslims & Jews. We aren’t a recognised religion with tax breaks or national holidays. We don’t get courts of law or HR departments or big NGOs bending over backwards to accommodate us and tiptoeing around us to avoid an insult. We have to quietly and secretly go about our business in case we spook the horses or someone calls a hotline on us. Further, 200 years ago people with my beliefs were still getting hanged and burned on pyres (in your country, btw).
As Bill Hicks said; “Then, forgive me.”

Pop-star and raving beauty Zayn Malik publicly renounced Islam in his mid-twenties, presumably because he had enough “fuck-you” money by then.

A lot of celebrities use religion as part of their image branding. Gets those religious idiots on your side and some of them even might buy what you're selling, because you're "one of them".
With fewer people falling for the trap that's religion, fewer celebrities try to get you on their side with religion. Why you think celebs share those New Age platitudes on their social media instead of Bible verses?

It’s such a pity Brad Pitt turned back to Baptist Christianity from the atheism he embraced and espoused in his teens. He was a big get for the team.

Salman Rushdie is the most well-known popular writer in this category, becoming an apostate to preserve his freedom in art. His notorious clash with convert popstar Cat Stevens brought to the fore the many problems with dogmatic Islam.

C.2015 American hardcore singer & rapper Ronnie Radke made a series of tweets denouncing Christianity, because he doesn’t agree with their hypocritical stance on homosexuality. Interesting.
Radke himself identifies as straight, is married to a woman and has a daughter. Nice of him to come to our defence, anyway.
