Veda Pierce from "Mildred Pierce" (1945)

Has there ever been a bigger, more pretentious cunt of a daughter in cinema history? She grew up in what was practically a mansion, was spoiled rotten in every way possible, pretended to speak French, had cars given to her, but absolutely could not handle the "disgracefulness" of her mother running a restaurant. I wanted to reach through the screen and strangle the little bitch from beginning to end.

Oh, you said in cinema. Never mind.

Joan wasn't about to let Tina turn into Veda, neither!

OP,

You've never spoken of your people,

where you came from, so perhaps it's natural.

You seem, dreadfully recherche, n'est-ce pas?

Interesting interview with Ann Blyth, if you're so inclined...

"Mildred Pierce" is one of Carol Burnett's favorite movies

And she did an amazing spoof of it on her variety show

She was so awful and ungrateful. Did she have any redeeming qualities? I haven't seen the film in ages.

Poor Veda was just a product of an unfortunate home life

divorced parents

death of a sibling

awful, cheap dresses that smell

absent parents

If only Joan had know how to be a parent

Carol Burnett's sketch was a far better telling of the Mildred Pierce story

than the expensive, overblown HBO-Kate Winslet production with its endless episodes, muddied characters, and plodding pace

Burnett did it twice.

[quote] She grew up in what was practically a mansion

Please -- she grew up in a tract house in Glendale.

Camp classic. But no one ever talks about the novel, by the great James M. Cain (Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice). If you haven't read it, it's well worth it.

R10 = Veda
